Is unlimited internet in a van possible in the UK and the EU? As full-time vanlifers who work, live and travel on the road in our tiny home on wheels, it is essential for us to have strong and decent internet everywhere we go.
We not only depend on a strong internet signal for work every day but also to kick back and relax, stream videos, watch youtube and do general day-to-day browsing, along with our security systems and trackers all using the internet.
So how can you get unlimited internet in a van with the roaming chargers, fair use policy and the dreaded Brexit, both in the UK and in Europe?

I think the mifi dongle you have, may be able to connect to an antenna. There is a small slot in the bottom of the unit. Flip open the cover - and you can see the two connectors. Hope this helps Graham

We've looked everywhere and our version doesn't - you're right that the earlier version of this model had them but when we were looking to buy this unit we couldn't find one with those antenna slots for sale (for cheap)

Get a Tesco rocketpack sim. 100gb for 20 quid with a clubcard and don’t enforce any roaming cap or charge for using in Europe 👍
@FreedomStrider

You're right about no roaming charges, but in their T and C's it says "We will monitor your HFH Usage and location over a rolling 4 month period. Where you are found to be in one our HFH destinations and HFH Usage exceeds 2 months during this monitoring period (in comparison to being in the UK or elsewhere), you will have exceeded our fair usage policy" So if you go for a few months, they might catch on, but there isn't technically a roaming cap 😎😂 good spot!

@@FreedomStrider yer I’m away for 3 months this time so will see if they actually enforce anything, been fine so far. I’ve brought a couple of spare sims as backups if they do as with just being pay as you go can probably just make a separate account with a new sim.

Had anyone tested iD provider (Three network)? We got it because in the conditions it says that if I am out of the UK for more than 2 months in a 4 months period, they will ask me to confirm my ties to the UK. I chatted with them and specifically asked whether my job in the UK and (some) address would be a good enough tie and whether I could use all of the unlimited data in the EU if this is confirmed and they said yes to both (I saved the messages). Which I guess might still not mean it would actually happen so I will see when we hit that limit. But I have been super disappointed with their coverage so I am not sure it would work. From my phone, I barely load a page anywhere in the town in England where I work. National parks are a complete disaster. A massive 19 Db antenna helps but still. I am hoping it would perform better abroad (going soon) but if not, I am getting rid of it. Strangely, over many years in the UK before the van life, my normal Czech provider was never bothered by any fair usage policy. Shame they don't offer a big enough plan.

Very interesting, I suspect they might flag you if you do it for a while but odd they weren't concerned!

Hey guys, have you looked into the mobile starlink plan? It is about £120 a month but that includes everything. Not sure how all your costs are working out but it might be less hassle and more cost effective than multiple plans. Also really useful vid, thanks. I have seen o2 advertising that they are the only network which allow you to use your uk package in the eu for up to three months, does that also have fair use restrictions? I have an antenna on the roof of my van (Poynting 5-in-1 MIMO 2xLTE, 2xWiFi, 1xGPS) this little beastie works well and doesn’t look like the typical antennas😁 I have teamed this up with a Teltonika router.

It looks like some carriers using O2, instead of doing a fair usage limit on terms of GB, they do a time period, so if you go out for a few months, and you're constantly away from the UK they might block you. "Might" O2 themselves have a 25GB/month fair usage. Starlink is interesting, I'm not sure if they have roaming charges? Or a limit? Or how it compares with regular 4G? If we had the budget, we might have gone for starlink, and if it drops in price, we still yet might 👌 Right now we pay £10/month for Sam's phone (13GB/mth in EU) £20/month for Polly's phone (20GB/mth in EU) £25/month for EE Van Internet (50GB/mth in EU) So effectively, £55/month for 83GB/month of EU data...we shall see how we get on with this setup, cheers for your internet setup, we'll check them out 😎

Nice video! Thank you for posting!. Looking for similar options. Have you not researched Starlink? I realize its more expensive, but perhaps an option worth investigating?
@FreedomStrider

We have and I think in a few years time it will be worth it. It is a little expensive still and has a few beta bugs to work out (the ability to move it the dish up, and how well it lasts on the roof of a campervan) but I think that will be the eventual future of campervan internet 👍👍

Really helpful video. I;m just in the process of finding data for a year long trip round Europe and have been struggling to find anything for 100Gb per month. I;d like to know how you're getting on with Tiekom because I have just emailed them asking if their 'only data' plans have restrictions or to go with their 120 international plan. and how long for the sim to arrive to the uk. Anything you can tell me would be great.
@FreedomStrider

We actually are doing a video in a few weeks on Tiekom, as we wanted to test it for 4 months before reviewing it. In short, brilliant. No restrictions in Europe that we have found, we went with their 300Gb/month data only sim, for 40 EUR/month. It took around a week to get delivered to the UK and was easy to set up. If you quote FREEDOMSTRIDER on the request form you'll also get 10% off ;) tiekom.com/contact-us/?p=New%20Data%20SIM%20300GB

@@FreedomStrider Thanks for the quick reply. If the package is as good as you say it is then I think your next video should do REALLY well because I can't find anything that covers it on yt and I guarantee there will be a LOT of people that are looking for this type of service. I used your affiliate like in my email to them but will use it again when I fill out their form. My biggest concern rn is it turning up in time before I leave in 2 weeks. Something else that I got from your comments above is the Tesco rocketpack sim. I've ordered a couple of those too that I can activate while I'm away and the intention was to cycle 2 on a monthly basis (freeze 1 after 30 days and activate the other). I don't know how successful this would be or if it would work but for free sims it is worth a try but hopefully I wont need that. Might be worth mentioning in your next video though. Safe travels and look forward to you review. edit. Just received an email from them, this is for their national sim. I have asked them to confirm about their international data restrictions. It also looks like they have removed some plans (your 300Gb plan) from their website 150GB of data / month Roaming in EU (zone 1) 23GB of data in EU 4G coverage FREE activation fee and no commitment to remain Monthly fee 29,90€

For Scandinavia and Baltic countries get Elisa Saunalahti prepaid plan from Finland. 20 € for unlimited 4G in Finland and 27 € to 30 € for unlimited in the rest of Scandinavia and Baltic, but after 50 GB you'll get limited to 0.5 Mbps.

Dumb question but I assume all these numbers are monthly numbers. Like when you say EE has 50gb data cap fair use, that is PER MONTH, right?
@FreedomStrider
@FreedomStrider 8 ай бұрын
Yeah all are per month. Ee offer a decent amount if you don't use much Internet, we just use 300GB/month+

Yes starling is around £115/month with a £529 setup fee. Ignoring the setup fee (as some motorhome WiFi kits cost that much), £115 is still ALOT more than buying even multiple simcards

Great vid. This is so frustrating I used to be able to use unlimited and now capped to 12GB. I have one sim on the phone from Three, Unlimited in UK and capped to 12gb in EU. Second sim from SMARTY but thats also 12GB... So only 24GB per month. 5 days in France already running out. I think a temporary solution could be getting SMARTY 200GB £17 per month and then when you run out of 12GB you then purchase their 3 day EU data pass for £7 which basically unlocks your data allowance for 3 days. So perhaps you run out after 4 days and then pay £7 every 3 days which works out roughly £56 per month + £17 per month = £73 per month you'd technically get 200GB or £76 per month for Unlimited. Thats pretty heavy but still cheaper than Starlink :) Also there is Tiekom who offer 300GB for 43 euros per month without any fair use caps in EU, they ship sims to UK or anywhere in Europe. The latter is probably the best option but right now I am in France and can't wait too long to get the sim shipped.
@FreedomStrider
@FreedomStrider Жыл бұрын
Yes, what you've actually said with Tiekom, we are testing them out right now. We're going to do a video in a few months once we have fully tested it and see if they really are the best option without any strings, but so far, so good. Tiekom is shipped from Spain (but is a German company) so maybe you might be able to pik it up, they're just outside Madrid (if you're in that area)? All new UK sim cards now have a fair usage policy so I don't think there's any simcard left unturned now (superdrug and virgin used to have a bypass, but now have closed that gap).

@@FreedomStrider Ah awesome! I've read good things about this Tiekom deal. Did you need to be in Spain to activate it though? Ive got a friend in France and he said I can send it to his address so if I can activate it from France that would be awesome. Already run out on Three and thei custom support is shite. Also found Popit, they do 100gb per month for £25 and it is not capped in EU according to their website. But Tiekom deal seems better.

I have used another code "VANDUCK" and it she also gave me small discount. Glad to hear its all working fine for you! I have 1GB left of my 50GB Smarty Sim, I have been buying 3 day EU Data Passes... Will get the sim at my friends soon I hope!
