This doesn't feel like a Kaiju movie, it's just genuine cinema. It's a rare thing to make the audience care for EVERY character on screen. It's one of the most empathetic, compassionate, painful but emotional movies of the year. I cried so many times. You really need to see it in theaters, don't miss this event.

I very much agree with that statement far more polished than some of the films in the series. Godzilla is used here to deal with wider issues and not just a fight to stop a giant Monster.
@vickanid1862

Quite true. It's almost like Godzilla is an afterthought. It shows a very emotional Japan right after WWII with people just trying to survive bombed out cities etc. When Godzilla is on the screen, it's pretty wild but mostly, to me, it was a character study.

Yep. Very 'back to its roots'. Reminded me a lot of the original 1954 Gojira. I also really enjoy the 1984 version, but I may be in the minority on that. I loved it. Going to try to see it again.

But instead focusing a lot of the movie on the story behind those affected by the existence and presence of Godzilla... One huge difference in this movie is that his atomic breath is EASILY the BEST it has ever been in ANY Godzilla movie. The sheer power and destruction it leaves behind is insane, no other Godzilla has done this besides maybe Shin Godzilla but even this Godzilla's Atomic Breath surpasses Shin Godzilla by a lot in my opinion. Its legit a mini nuclear bomb, you guy's won't understand until you watch the movie yourselves, but once you do you will know what I'm talking about. To anybody that hasn't watched yet, you are in for a treat.

I took my son's to an early screening. Ages 8 and 15. The 8 year old never lost interest even during the human only scenes. (Normally he wants the monsters to just come back) the older one loved the surround sound and felt that he was in the middle of the action. I loved that godzilla always felt powerful. His first appearance is like a jump scare that just keeps going. The human element was very compelling. The trailers did not give everything away which I loved. This is a must see. Especially in theaters.

Oscar nomination for Ryonosuke Kamiki, just a brilliant performance. Amazing that except for the opening night scene, all of the other Godzilla appearances are during day-time which adds to the big fella's impact. The best Godzilla movie by far, and something that even non-kaiju fans should try to see. I'm related to the special effects man of the first movie in 1954, Eiji Tsuburaya, and I think he would have been very proud of this masterpiece.

Just came from seeing it at the Movie Theater. I really enjoyed it a lot! This movie has way more heart than any other Godzilla in memory and I’ve seen a lot of them. Godzilla was menacing as hell too. For a movie made for $15 Million US dollars, I’m damn impressed on just how much was done in this movie for that price. Because for the price to make this movie, it’s more impressive than many $150-300 Million dollar blockbuster priced movies. And it has a real story with heart as well on top of a menacing god their monster.

If they make sequels to this, I'd like them to keep making films set in the past. Each film takes place in a different decade from the 50's up until it reaches the present day. It would help the series feel distinct from the Monsterverse and could let them experiment with some really interesting ideas. For example; how different would this world become from ours due to monster attacks now being a regular part of life since the 40's.

I saw early screenings last night and I walked away thinking about it for hours, wanting to watch it again. This movie is I think my favorite Godzilla movie in years, Shin was polarizing for me because of how different Godzilla was and I didn’t see it for a long time but it grew on me over time. This was right out the gates everything and more that I could have wanted. I wanted a scary Godzilla, I wanted one that really feels like what he was originally portrayed to be. And holy shit did they pull it off, the real stand out next to Godzilla was the music for me. That new soundtrack is so dire and menacing I love it in that first big moment you see him in action. The design and how Godzilla works this time around is so good and perfect it just hits all marks of this near unstoppable threat.

Went last night with my brother. It was amazing. I normally don’t get frightened at the movies, but this Godzilla had me ready to run. Very well done, such attention to detail, I felt the postwar hopelessness of the residents. To have all the progress they’d made wiped out in moments was traumatic - the loss of so many people who had survived the war. I have to go see it again.

I loved this film. CGI, VFX, sound design, score, cinematography, characters, writing, design, plot, pacing, themes, development, action, spectacle, acting, and ending were all done with so much care, passion, and love. You can tell the writers, actors, and director really did care about this franchise. Over this is a spectacular film in my opinion easily the best movie of this year and easily one of the best Godzilla/kaiju movies. Overall I'd rate this a 10/10.

Saw it yesterday evening; the main aspect of the film - being Godzilla, of course - was a slam dunk. But the surprise for me was the fact that the human element and characters were handled beautifully. Yes, melodrama was present here and there, but generally I was too busy being entertained to really notice. Definitely something that can be enjoyed by all moviegoers, not just fans of the kaiju genre.

Just got back from an advance screening of G-1 at the AMC 14 IMAX in Grove City, OH. All I can say is wow! This is the Godzilla movie I've been waiting to see ever since I saw the 1954 version with Raymond Burr on TV when I was 9 years old. There are so many things I'd like to say about the movie, but since this video is a spoiler-free zone, I'm just going to shut up, except I will say I can't wait to see it again.

Same here brother 🙏 I've always loved Godzilla/kaiju movies. This one was different in that, like the 54 movie. It was a great movie that happened to have Godzilla in it. I almost cried twice, and I never cry in general. It was powerful, and I think my wife would actually have liked this one too.

Just saw it yesterday at an IMAX and couldn't have been happier with the movie. I'll give the best Godzilla story to the original but Minus One was a close second and the best characters in a a Godzilla film to date. While the American made movies might have an edge in special effects, Godzilla is always best as a villain and in that role this is the best Godzilla ever and I'll rank this as my favorite in the series. Can't wait to see it again!

I saw it some hours ago. And it's very high on my Godzilla movie list! The monster look here is one of the best. Yeah, there always gonna be the monster of 1964's forever classic face and majestic physical poses. But getting back: The human script, the sights, the sounds, the monster action all kept me awake and engaged. Best of all, I saw no little sore spots of new imaginative concept that I didn't like thrown in ruining everything good. Thus, I left this 2023 flick not having seen enough - which was just the way I left the 2014 flick. But maybe well enough gotta be left alone until the next time. It was, at least, better than the 2014 flick which was the flick that HAD got us believing these movies could be found great again. A small recap: Again, the lack of those distractive blemishes that I can't stand puts it high up there on my Godzilla movie list. And it THIS one has me believing we can keep even the great movies getting even better yet.

I saw it last night at an early showing. I agree with Alastair 9 out of 10. I feel I knew too much about the movie because of the trailers. One thing not explained is why Godzilla looked burnt or charred when performing his heat ray and perhaps a little more backgriund and explanation why the monster came of from the depths when he did at the start of the film. I know that is picky but I am a Godzilla fan who loves details. Good characters, good story and Godzilla is ferocious!

I'm seeing it in the theatre tomorrow, and I CANNOT WAIT. I knew the moment in the trailer that the woman pushes the soldier back that I wanted to see it. That one scene told me he was coming home from the war alive...and he shouldn't have. That one small premise alone is enough to show me they're paying attention to character, and what exactly Godzilla was a manifestation of in the cultural zeitgeist at the time. It said so much about the movie in one small clip...

I disagree with the nitpicking of the cgi (didn't see it) or the music (I thought it was a wonderful score). The crowd I saw it with loved it. Wish I could see it again but it left on Christmas Day.
