In today's video, I talk about whether or not it is safe to tune a CVT or automatic Subaru WRX. I talk a little about types of typical tunes, and what they offer the owner, and really how they effect the WRX. This is just a basic overview, a more in depth video will be coming out shortly.

I just picked up a 2019 wrx with the sti short throw shift. The car is so great the way it comes, if i was to do any immediate mods it would be something to help with that rev hang! But its no big deal, its just too damn fun to drive!

So everyone says this, and just to play devils advocate, why is that going to help? It will if you are running your WRX hard, but for most people they run into issues daily driving. I never had a trans temp issue on my last WRX, drove it decently hard for 20-25k miles.

Hopefully getting a 2019 WRX Limited CVT sometime around March/April this next year :D. I'm planing on modding it quite substantially, I'm looking at getting 300ish whp with torque in the 300-320ish range, keeping it modest :O lol. I'll be most definitely upgrading the torque converter and transmission cooler as supporting mods. But I also want to change the stock exhaust with an invidia R400, new intake and EGR deletes, and possibly a TGV delete. Any suggestions or things to consider is welcomed :D. Probably wont get serious about modifying the engine till I've had the car for at least a year though lol.

Yikes, lots of plans for a brand new, very expensive car. lol. My two cents, enjoy the car first. Wait until you really want more power, and do the mods one by one so you can appreciate each. Don't lose the transmission in the first couple months.

I just saw a Stage 2 WRX CVT running stage 2 hit around 237 Whp and 310 TQ. Not nearly as good as the manual gets. Might as well just get a faster car at that point. CVT robs WAY too much HP. I test drove a ton of cars recently after being on a 2015 stage 2 WRX - pro-tuned BTW.... and many other cars feel much faster. Unless you have snow or lots of rain I wouldn't get a WRX again based on just if you want to go fast and dump a bunch of money into it. I got a older 2009 BMW 135i and just with a stage 1 tune from MHD let me tell you the difference in power from my WRX is ridiculous. I really liked how the WRX drove though.... the steering feel is second to none and it had just a right amount of stiff yet still comfortable suspension with an added rear sway bar. In a straight line though in traffic.... there is simply no comparison from my manual WRX and the auto BMW N54 platform which if you mod those, compared to the WRX can REALLY go crazy in HP. Mine currently has 46,700K miles and some pipe was cracked and gave me limp mode but I'm taking care of that right now. This is what comes with buying a used car but it is what it is. I'm also replacing the shocks and struts.
@Sphoxros
@Sphoxros 5 жыл бұрын
Sounds like they didn't get the upgraded torque converter ? And possibly whom ever did the tune to get that 237Whp and 310TQ, either didn't know what they were doing or didn't have other supporting mods to coincide with the rest of the mods ? o.O Least that's what it sounds like, as I have seen CVTs get 300Whp and TQ with the right mods.

No other car has such emotions about any little part, change by the manufacturer or modification as the WRX. Kudos to those fans of these niche vehicles! We have an '10 Outback and '19 Ascent in the driveway ,and I've been tuning and maintaining my cars for over 30 years. First thing, please don't post anti-CVT hate if you don't even understand how one works or is constructed. Worse, don't post anti-automatic, DSG or CVT hate unless you actually are of driving age and drive a manual on a regular basis. I'd guess that more than half the posts are from people that don't even own a WRX or don't drive a manual here or on C&D, MT, or any other forum. Do I dislike past CVTs. Yes. The one in our Ascent whines and has had a number of recalls, and now finally now drives properly. It has never failed, and has given us 65k of good, albeit noisy service. However, the CVT in the new WRX is a complete redesign. It is not the same CVT as the Justy. It doesn't have a rubber band. Subaru sells millions of cars worldwide, and spends a lot of time an effort engineering cars for the largest target audience to make the most profit, like any other carmaker. They have bent over backwards to still offer a manual option on the BRZ and WRX, and waited as long as possible before discontinuing the manual on other cars. Give them a break, manual lovers, they are one of the few loves you have left! You cannot fault them for wanting to appeal to a larger audience. CVT, love or hate it, is the technology they have decided to pursue. I currently drive an Audi Q5. Love the DSG, and the one in both my recent Q5s have been FLAWLESS. People push for Subaru to DSG the WRX forgetting it took VW/Audi a DECADE of bad press perfecting the DSG. They used to be junk. Subaru is pursuing the CVT, and no matter what is posted here will continue to do so. They have made a ton of progress. From a theoretical and engineering POV, the CVT is the ultimate transmission. It is the practice that is still buggy. You want a manual, drive one. Can the WRX take a tune? At this point, you have to wait for more people to try. Their risk, and applaud them for taking it. All car mods are pay to play. Blanket, anecdotal or assumed conclusions like "it will blow up" are unwarranted, as much as claims of running Stage 2 with no problems. Unless it is backed up with actual data, a name, picture or claim, it is here say. My guess (based on working on and tuning my own cars for a long, long time) is that any drivetrain can take 10-15% more power than rated from the factory. That has to be there from a production POV. IF the CVT exactly matched the output of the engine before failing, then half of them would fail with no tune. Our Ascent can tow 5000 lbs, and we've taken many trips through mountains with seven people and full luggage aboard, it hasn't slipped an iota at 70-80 MPH speeds. Current WRX is about 2 psi less boost than the Ascent. I think any reasonable 3 psi or less that a JB4 will offer is well within the limits of the car. Again, without abuse. You can fry any stock manual or automatic with no mods with abuse. I'm considering a WRX as my Q5 is sadly about to be totaled with deer damage. I drove manuals for 20 years before snowy winters and a big family put me in SUVs. The CVT is tempting given about the responsiveness I've read about. Test driving both this weekend, a 6SPD and a SPT. Best of luck all.

In S# there is a huge amount of rev hang. And with regard to tuning CVT's, there are tons of people stage 1 and even 2 with no issues. Check out the WRX CVT FB page! It's a great resource!

Hey john, im a member of a group of subaru's, alot of them have a stage 2+ set up on the cvt and a few stage 3 pushing 340. None of us have problems :) im 25k miles on a stage 2 tune. You just have to have a beast support mod setup. Which makes most cvts more modified then your average wrx. Not hating on a standard, i have both. But its a misconception that you cant have some umph in your cvt. Obviously not as much as a stick shift, but the highest whp ive seen is 470 on a cvt.

I’ve had a CVT WRX since 2015, desperately looking to trade it for something else lol. Kind of a pointless car imo. Got it when I was 22, almost 26, over it now.
