Thank you for sharing your experience. Im 77 and learn to play piano. It is quite à challenge at this age but it is now my secret garden. I can't believe I ever would be able to play silent night or fur Elise of Beethoven😂 I start now working on Prelude C major of JS Bach. ❤ I play good enough for my own need. I will not have enough time left to get to the perfection.

I started to learn piano 3 years ago at age 68, with no musical experience. It was to keep me occupied after the death of my wife of 40 years. It has become a daily part of my life. I will keep learning as long as I have left. I began with a teacher am still with her for weekly lessons, and intend to continue. I have a Yamaha p515, which is a fine learner instrument and is good enough so that I can play on my teacher’s Steinway grand with little adjustment. I enjoy watching you guys to keep the latest developments in mind and to have a goal to move up to.

I started playing the piano at age 5 on an 1880's upright piano. I am now 66 and am fortunate to now play on a Yamaha CFIII 9' Concert Grand. I have made a living as a classical pianist, private teacher, and church organist/pianist. Still working full time. It is never too late to start but make sure your expectations are reasonable. Many adult beginners try to play pieces way more advanced than their appropriate level, wind up getting discouraged, and quit. Learning piano takes time and patience. I am so thankful my mom did not let me quit and am grateful to the excellent piano and organ teachers I had growing up. They saw something in me and encouraged me to excell. Also, learning how to read music and working on sight reading at the appropriate level is so important and not that complcated if you work at it. Again, patience is needed.

I was a bass player in bar bands in my youth (1980's), and fell out of music when life took over in the 90's. I broke my ankle hiking in 2019, and said "I'm learning piano!"; bought a keyboard and started taking online courses, and it's been an absolute blast! The courses I've taken are chord based courses which is exactly how I learned/wrote songs back in the day; just from chord charts - so sight reading is no longer a requirement or even an issue for piano; piano lessons back in the 80's involved expensive in person lessons learning to sight read, play scales and Mary Had A Little Lamb (and NOT the SRV version ;) With online courses and all the tech available now to play along with KZfaq, or create and play along with your own backing tracks makes it so much fun! It's NEVER too late to start!

I played a little piano as a kid and a little in high school, but essentially was hands off until I was in my late 50’s. Now at age 64 I’m beginning to be able to play higher level classical pieces, as well as being able to sight read most contemporary songs. I finally invested in a baby grand (Yamaha GB1K) last year and am having the time of my life. No question it has enriched my life immensely.

What did Rachmaninoff say, something like a lifetime is not enough for piano but piano is enough for a lifetime. So true. I start piano at 40 and almost 7 years later feel like I should know more, play better, bigger repertoire, better sight reading skills and on and on. Folks there are people who have played for 40 years and feel the same way. They may never publicly admit to it BUT they almost certainly feel it. It’s why we get nervous to play recitals or perform. Because mistakes can happen at anytime to anyone. I think that’s the secret to pro players, they know this and just shrug it off recover super fast.

The only thing that holds a person back from learning something new is themselves. As a child my mom wanted to teach me to crochet with thread but I didn't have the patience, I thought, so I wouldn't try. Then when I was in my 30's and wanted to sell something at a craft show and saw how well my mom was selling her crocheted Christmas ornaments that was my motivation. However, to learn I had her and my Aunt go real, real slow when they crocheted so I could see how they were doing it, it was painfully hard for them. But after a month of practice when my Aunt had a problem with a pattern that she was working on and her and my mom couldn't figure out a solution to it they let me try and I figured it out. I feel this was partly due to the fact that I had really studied how crocheting worked so intently. Both her and my mom each had been crocheting for 50 years apiece by this time. So I started to learn piano at age 67 and I am gonna use the same strategy work hard at learning technique, thoroughly understand it, practice it a lot. This should allow me to analyze a piece and be able to learn to play it in less time.

I didn't start as an adult, but I did re-start (sure that's a word?). I played for 12ish years as a youth and stopped once I hit college. Now I'm 40 and restarted playing against just 6 months ago. I was really worried I would struggle. There's some expectations to manage; it was hard not being able to play songs I used to 2 decades ago. However, in only a few months I was playing like I didn't think possible. I even surpassed what I perceived as my old "skill level" learning more difficult pieces than I was able to play before I quit. The main thing is I realized how much I missed playing the piano. Finding a good teacher really helped.

It depends on how well you want to play. Concert pianists start young. The advantages of starting late is that all pianists read music, unlike guitarists and playing piano provides an excellent mental exercise, as well as satisfaction.

I have just started playing piano a month and a half ago by purchasing a Roland FP 30X, and I started playing acoustic guitar 2 weeks ago after buying a Taylor GS mini in Mahogany and a Martin Backpacker for when I go traveling. I watched your videos on the pianos and guitars multiple times before deciding on what brands and models to go with. Your videos were a huge help for that, Thank you. On the other hand, I have to say, I am really surprised and disappointed at both of you in this video for jumping into the deep end right from the start and trying to upsell beginner pianists like me, a massive investment like a $7,000+ Baby Grand knowing full well that they would be best served starting with something much less expensive like the portable digital Roland I bought or even a much less expensive quality digital upright. We both know that there is a ton of excitement and motivation from the customer in the beginning when making the decision to purchase their first piano, and a lot of beginners won’t stick with it in the long run. They won’t even really know yet whether the piano is the right fit for them until they are practicing for at least a few months. They will then decide to either continue with their studies or to try out a different instrument like the guitar. What you guys are doing is taking advantage of a customer’s initial enthusiasm in the exact same way a gym salesman will try to upsell somebody a full annual gym membership package for like $600. Especially right at the start of the new year when they know that out-of-shape customer’s have just made their resolutions to lose weight. What the customer really needs in that situation, is a monthly membership to test the waters and see if they will stick with it before making a huge commitment. Purchasing a first piano is the same thing, start with a good quality instrument that has all the features required like 88 touch sensitive keys, fully weighted and graded for example, without investing more money than is absolutely necessary. They can always purchase the Baby Grand later, down the line as a reward for years of dedicated practice and hard work.

Thank you, this is a spot on comment and I hope you will receive many “likes”. I am also very disappointed by these 2. I really like them and they are very informative but lately their need to sell certain products overshadows their reviews. I hope they go back to the way I thought they used to be, informative as well as entertaining, not salespeople. Patrick and Ted, the best way to sell pianos is to let the customer feel they are not being pushed into buying only what they want to sell. I still enjoy your videos.

I’m on the staring-60-down side of my 50s and am learning how to play chords and by ear. I took classical lessons as a child 50 years ago for a few years but life happened and I couldn’t continue. I have many different instruments and love experimenting, so I ended up back with piano at this late date, but learning a different way. Glad I can read music though if need be, more tools in the box. I won’t ever, as they say, get to Carnegie Hall, but who cares? My significant other and I play so many kinds of music together (old time, country, rock, blues, classical, southern rock, whatever we like on a particular day). As mentioned in the video, arthritis is making me less able to pick stringed instruments, so piano/keyboard is a good choice. We may even learn some production skills, who knows? As long as I can make music somehow, I can stay sane and have fun 😂

'learn piano' is quite broad. But anyone that is able to 'learn' something about piano - as in comprehending some instructions and mentally and physically following - even baby steps, is going to be 'learning'. So the pre-requisite is just about ability to retain some information and/or instructions - in order to keep learning, and to beginning accumulating and applying what has been taught. Even learning some melody on piano with one finger is learning. And then - normally, with some extra instructions, getting taught how to use the various fingers of one hand to make the music flow well and nicely is further learning of piano. It's the accumulation of experience and retaining of instructions, and using memory to remember the instructions and experience, and the applying of techniques - no matter how simple, is part of the learning and development. Whatever the rate of learning and progress is, the 'learning' of piano is certainly possible if at least some 'minimum' condition is met. And whether somebody continues to learn and develop will depend on conditions as well.

I played guitar since I was a teenager, and although I never became Eddie Van Halen, I certainly had fun in the process. That said, I bought a keyboard for my three year olds birthday in August. I was so blown away with the sound quality that I bought myself a Roland FP60x in September. I feel I certainly had an advantage with so much guitar experience, but I feel learning the piano and making decent sounds within a relatively short period of time would be a much easier endeavor than learning guitar as an adult. Not saying that learning the guitar as an adult would be impossible, but I actually have never seen it done successfully. I have impressed myself with the few tunes that I have learned so far just learning out of books, and watching KZfaq for tips. I feel LivingPianoVideos is an essential watch for any musician on any instrument. I checked out a lot of the apps, but I have mostly stuck with books and a metronome. I have Alfred's All In One Course for Adults and Piano Adventures, but 100% recommend the Alfred's book. I supplement that book with Alfred's Easy Best Loved Children's Songs. They are definitely not easy for a beginner, but the arrangements are exceptional and make it feel as I'm really playing the piano. I have uploaded a couple selections to my channel, if anyone wants to see what can be realistically accomplished in a short period of time for an adult beginner. That said, Ted is the man. Patrick should convince Ted to add instructional segments to the channel. Love the videos. Being a guitar guy, I'm a gear junkie. Last thing, I recommend making an investment in a good instrument to any beginner. A baby grand is a little much, and probably impractical for most, but I wish I would have went a little further and bought a Yamaha P515. I like my FP60x more and more, but I feel Yamaha has better features, such as built in rhythms and a better app. The FP90x could be a good choice but it's pricier than the Yamaha and you can only access the rhythms from the app on the Roland, and the Roland App is terrible. At the end of the day though, I'm happy with the FP60x. It feels great, and I like the sounds, the built in USB interface, and mic input. I will upgrade to a flagship slab portable digital piano in a few years once the next generation is released from Yamaha and Roland. My dream piano would be a combination of the PSR-SX900 and the Yamaha P515. Even if it's $2500 to $3000, as a guitarist, I love the tonal and arrangement options from the PSR-SX900, but also would need a premium weighted keyboard. I know they have something similar in the Clavinova line, but I like the slimness and portability of the slab pianos.

The truth is no one who started past his 16th birthday will ever 'learn' to play piano at 'pro' level. Thing is, all pro pianists starts at age 5 to 7, and starts right at acoustic piano, many of them at grand piano. While they play their growing hands anatomically adapts to piano keys. Once hands are completely anatomically formed, say at age of 20, there is no way back for the one who never played piano before. He will never ever be able to compete with the one who started to learn piano at the age of 6. The latter has not just anatomically adapted hands, but countless hours of grinding and 15 years of experience at the piano, in many cases guided by personal teacher. While adults can learn significantly faster than kids they has nowhere near as much free time to spend at the piano and tends to question (think), while kids dully do what were told to do by parents and a teacher. The same applies to a few of other music crafts such as singing or violin playing. If one is too late to start he never will compete with the ones who started at the right age. Truth to be said, many of those kids, even if they spend 15 years of learning music, does learn very little or, in many cases, virtually nothing. There are plenty of pianists who spent 20 years forced by parents, graduated from music schools and conservatories with bachelors degree and barely can play these few graduation pieces they practiced for 1 000 hours. Of course, everything I wrote here applies to 'classical' music industry. In pop/rock scene things plays differently. Certainly you can learn to play keyboard competently enough even for classical pieces just abandon any illusion to become a virtuoso at the piano. In fact, keeping your hopes low and knowing your limits can be tremendously beneficial if you choose this path.

Well from my experience, never learning any piano when you're young will hinder how much you can achieve, not to mentionnot having any natural ability or learning any other instruments. My dad was an accomplished violinist, artistically and musically inclined, with a good ear and ability to appreciate good music. He started learning piano at 45, and continued to play till he passed away at 89, and never was able to play the piano well enough where someone would want to listen to him play. He could read music, play by ear, transpose on the fly, and etc... But somehow his playing was always hard to bear, so he just played for his own enjoyment, while making "a joyful noise unto the Lord." I haven't tried to learn because I think my ability to actually learn to play well will end up like his, and to me it's not worth the effort. At age 60, I'd rather learn something I think I can do, and use for the benefit of others, of which I've be learning spanish for about a year and am daily improving. ¿Sé habla español?

@@originaldanman There may be truth to that and I am not about to argue. I started learning piano at age 5 but never took it seriously except that I was always interested in music and always used my basic skills for one thing or another. It's a question you really have to answer yourself. I had to self-teach for two years in my sixties before I even understood my expectations. Another four years on an altered path I'm happy with my progress. Like any art or craft, you must enjoy the process day to day. Why are you using phrases like "rule of thumb" in a piano video? Very weird & distasteful reference to be making in a video like this.

Hahahaha. I am not laughing at domestic violence, I am laughing at your outrage of the usage of an exceptionally common phrase that hasn’t had an association to domestic violence for decades. The actual origin of the word is not what you state. That was a myth from the 18th century and was written about satirically at the time. The true origin is from various traders that used it in the context of rough measurements. It’s definition and common use today has no association with the myth driven origins of the word. Your outrage makes zero sense just as the outrage in the US in the 70s-90s about the usage of the term was also false hysteria. Phrases and words are all about context. I’m fairly certain they had zero intention of making jokes about domestic violence in a video about learning the piano
