In 2018 we camped 6 nights at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn. It's in the Gateway National Reserve. It was $15 per night with our Senior National Parks Pass. It's dry camping on an old runway strip but you get a picnic table and there is a dump station, water station, hot showers and a visitor center. Takes one hour by bus and subway to get to Manhattan. The campground is closed this year because of the Pandemic.

Easily worth it, being just blocks from the PATH station and therefore minutes from lower Manhattan makes it a steal. The only problem I had was getting there from the north. The only way you can legally cross the river if you have propane is the top deck of the GWB, getting a mapping program to understand that was a super chore. Also ended up on a parkway that wasn't named parkway so had to do some creative driving to get back to a legal road. Oh, and I'm ever grateful to the kind person that let me over in the last 1,000 feet when I could finally see the sign that said right lane for upper deck, despite the (often well earned) reputation NYC drivers have for aggressive driving when they saw I clearly had to get over they graciously slowed down and left a gap big enough for my truck and trailer.

I have heard good things about that RV park. It is quiet, RVers feel safe, and you really do save $$$ by avoiding the hotels. I was born in NYC and still have family there. That is the least expensive way to visit!

Sailing there is on my bucket list. I was born in JC and still lots of family on both sides of the harbor. The museums and Central Park are a must. Travel safe.

But Floyd Bennett Field, part of Gateway Recreational Area, is worth it at $15 a night, when it's open (it has been closed for a couple of years). That's if you're old enough for a senior pass, but if not, $30 a night to camp within the borders of NYC. If you have a towed car, you can take it north, to the subway, or LIRR, or you can take it south to Rockaway Beach, and take the ferry into Brooklyn or Manhattan, and there's a subway from there, too. Or you can just take your car to the edge of the park, on Flatbush Avenue, and catch a bus from the bus stop there. Supposedly, there's a drag racing scene in the middle of the night, but there is a police station out there, and the headquarters for the NYPD helicopter patrol. There's a water view of Jamaica Bay, and you can fish from the shores. I saw a photo from there, with the distant skyline of Manhattan, and another with wild horses roaming the bay shore.. It just seems like it would be worth the trouble of the desolateness of the huge, old tarmac you're camping on, the possible drag races, and the out-of-way-ness of the location, to be able to stay in NYC so affordably (and it's just cool). This is a nature retreat for New Yorkers, by the way. Many camp out in tents behind the row of RV sites. And it has lots of interesting history. Right next to the RV sites, there's a huge, historic hangar, with restoration projects of many aircraft going on inside, kind of a museum of aircraft being actively created. All within the borders on Brooklyn, and in close reach of all the parts you might want to visit. People who go there to park, when they finally reopen, should know that they can't take any tunnels, or pass through anything on Manhattan with propane. But (I believe that this is right) you can take the Veranzano bridge from New Jersey, then Staten Island, and get off and drive through Coney Island, then Manhattan Beach, and pretty soon, you're there. You can travel the Expressways in an RV, basically the interstate highways, but you are forbidden to take an RV on a Parkway. This is what I want to do, if I ever actually get an RV and can travel. I'm not interested in New York mist of the time, but when I do think about this long enough, I get interested. Other places to camp outside the city, but a reasonable commute into town, are Chessequake SP, in New Jersey, south of Staten island, and a beautiful park on the Hudson, in Croton-on-Hudson, NY, where the town is beautiful, and the park is even adjacent to the railroad station. You can take various trains to get into Manhattan, including ones that stop at Penn Station or at Grand Central Station.

Nyc is great! Love the skating rink in Central Park. Usually take yearly trip to NYC. Always like a Broadway show. Chelsea is also a neat place.

Stayed there a few years back on our first trip to New York. Hope to make it back there soon

at first $120 a night sounds insanely high but $5hr isnt outrageous for in the metro, there are areas you will pay $3-4hr but not in downtown close to everything

Love what you guys do, especially the MIA work. I got to say though, if you are boondocking equipped, which we are, there are places to stay/park in and around New York City, for free. Super stealth not needed, it’s legal. Street parking, obviously. Even with rather amazing views. We used to live in the city for years, and have been in the road for a few months now. We have been back four or five times to visit relatives, and got lucky every single time. We have a 29’ long 11’6” tall converted low floor bus, not just a short sprinter. Traffic, however, is always a nightmare. Last Friday evening, getting from Brooklyn to Newark took almost three hours.

Croton point campground is 1 hour train ride from NYC and is on the Hudson River.

@technomadia I'm also planning a trip from NYC down to Florida in my Van. Can you share where you stopped and camped overnight? Hoping to take about 4-5 days to drive down from NYC and see some sights along the way. Much apprceciated!

$120 is far cheaper than getting a motel room! I'm not mad at that price at all. Looks like you guys had perfect weather too.

Spent 3 nights boondocking at Liberty Harbour in 2014. $59 per nite.

Next time stop by Mahlon Dickerson Campground in Jefferson NJ. This year 27 a night, a hidden gem. WEB site up and running for real time reservations. Bus and Train to the City from Dover NJ.

I’d I don’t mind parking in a drive way…you can park in my driveway. I’m a snowbird and head to florida for the winter. We head back to jersey city in June and leave in august. Trains and buses are walking distance from my home. Dm me if interested or have any questions about the area. I lived there for 50years. You are just scratching the surface. The restaurants that you were at had outdoor seating before Covid for quite a few years. Have fun!

How are the showers? That is a big thing for me. We are going next month.

We are headed to this park in a couple of weeks To visit our son but we’ll be towing a 43 ft fifth wheel and a bit nervous. Any advice? Maybe not chance it lol

I dunno, I found a much better place in the city. Boondocking at Floyd Bennet field in Brooklyn overlooking Jamaica Bay. Much better place IMO, and at $30 a night ($15 if you have an access pass or other similar pass). They have a shower house on site as well. You can also tour the hanger where they restore historic airplanes and speak with the volunteers who keep it running.

That a hotel price

I used to live & work close to Liberty State Park. However, you need to warn people that much of Jersey City can be a very dangerous place after dark.

Haa,Haa! Never, ever you will see me with my RV there.

For me, no RV park is worth $120. Why RV if you pay that kind of money, just get a hotel.
