Hey everyone! In this video, we look at answering the questions whether it is worth applying switch films to your keyboard build. We test linear and tactile switches, and the results are rather interesting!

What a nice video! Filiming switches has got to be my last favorite part of the hobby, my fat fingers cant put them on right, and my hands are too shakey to use tweezers :( (also one tip, maybe leave up the labels for stock /lubed / lubed + filmed) up a bit longer as my brain already forgot right as the sounds started.

Oh, man! Thanks for so much for this! I was looking everywhere for a comparison on Tealios V2's. Literally just got my N65 in last night. Been sitting on my Tealios for a week and still waiting on my films and keycaps. Super excited! Lubed and filmed sounds SO much better. There are picky people who would say you should alternate switch positions to test if location on the board has anything to do with the way they sound, even between those three spot, but for me, the sound difference was significant enough between the unlubed, lubed, and filmed and lubed, that I really don't think it's warranted.

Nice Bryan! You'll have to tell me how you like the NK65, it's something that I've wanted to review for a long time. As for the picky people, it's always good to get feedback from the people who watch my videos. Some suggestions are certainly better than others, but in this particular case I'd have to agree; this was more designed to be a quick test for someone who might be on the fence with lubing/filming and how it might make a difference. Glad you liked the vid!

@@PatrickRennie You're vid definitely had it's intended effect then. Also, came home to a Canada Post tag on my door. Went and picked up my keycaps and just finished building my NK65 EE. Just...wow. What a difference. Blows my Anne Pro 2 out of the water and that blew my Drop CTRL out of the water. That's without lube or films as well. My mind has been opened....oh, look! So too has my wallet. Here's to a future of less money and lots of keyboards, cheers!

@@PatrickRennie Finally got time yesterday to lube and film the Tealios V2's on my NK65 and the difference is amazing. I maybe could have started off with a Gat yellow or something a little more budget friendly, but I didn't regret my decision before I lubed and filmed them and I certainly don't now. Incredibly smooth with the tiniest bit of thock. It's absolutely perfect!

It definitely made the most difference with linear switches IMO. I'd say it's a pretty inexpensive, easy mod to do, and if you're already opening up your switches to lube them it won't add that much more time!

Yeah I wasn't expecting the sound to be so much different with the linears. I don't think it's as important for tactiles (unless you're solving the wobbly switch housing problem), but I'm sure glad I did it to my Tealios. They're sooooooo buttery smooth to type on now :)

Really appreciate the video, thank you. I recently tried filming my Glorious Pandas but after doing about 10, I compared the sound of the lubed + filmed to my normal lubed switches and I thought it made them more clacky when I was expecting a lower noise profile, not higher. I ended up removing them and going back to just lubed Glorious Pandas. I used deskeys films and have most of that pack plus one more. I was intending to use the second pack on the tangerines I purchased to use in my GMMK Pro, but now I'm debating if I want to do that. Were you just using novelkeys films?
@PatrickRennie
@PatrickRennie 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words! These are TX films that I picked up from a supplier in Canada. I've heard from some others that the Deskeys are quite good. Novelkeys is a popular site for this sort of thing which was why I mentioned it.

The TX films come in a bunch of colours. Was thinking about getting the clear 0.150mm to match the clear housings of the Tealios. Do you know if the colour of film inpacts the sound?
@PatrickRennie
@PatrickRennie 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Lee, good question. I don't think the different colours would necessarily affect the sound profile, as I think the material is the same across all colours. One word of caution with clear ones - I had a friend who just finished lubing and filming some Zealios with clear films, and he had a hell of a time finding them if he accidentally dropped one haha. Hope that helps!

Sadly when you are looking for subtle nuances you have to make it on the same spot in the keyboard. Even the same exact switch mounted one slot to left, right, up or bottom will produce a different sound.

Hey patrick. I really appreciate your work, I started watching your channel now, and I found your reviews interesting. I would like to ask you a question unrelated to this video. I am looking for a mechanical keyboard that is cheap and has light keys. From what I researched, the red switches are the ones that fit these characteristics, and of those I found the red switches Outemu and Huano. Have you ever tested these two? Which one does better?
@PatrickRennie
@PatrickRennie 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Necro, thanks for your support! I have used Huano Reds before (see the review for the RK919 for my commentary on that), but I do not have experience with Outemu Reds. I've used Outemu Browns before and found them to be a pretty good budget option (you'll see them in a lot of the more budget-oriented keyboards like Drevo, etc). I thought the Huanos were good for the price, if not a bit scratchy overall. Are you looking to build your own or buy something prebuilt?
@uelxisde411
@uelxisde411 3 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry, I didn't quite understand what you meant by 'build my own', but of the red switches I'm looking for, at least here in my country (Brazil), the ones I can find for a low budget are just the Huano and Outemu. Unless I import a keyboard, but in that case, would you have one to recommend?

Ah I was asking whether or not you were going to buy a pre-built (like a Redragon) or build your own custom keyboard. I unfortunately don't have any experience with either keyboard, but I have heard the brand Redragon in a few other videos as being a decent and affordable budget option.
