In today’s episode, I chat with writer, teacher, cultural critic, and mathematics PhD, Bethel McGrew about the faith of Jordan Peterson. We discuss the New Atheists, like Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, and Richard Dawkins, and compare them to the new NEW atheists, Jordan Peterson, Douglas Murray, and David Berlinski. We get down to the crux of why Jordan Peterson hasn’t fully crossed the Rubicon in terms of coming to real faith in Christ.

ABOUT BECKET:
Becket Cook was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He attended Jesuit College Preparatory
School of Dallas. After graduating from college, Becket moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of writing and acting, finding success in both. He eventually went on to become a production designer working with the top photographers and directors in the world on fashion shoots for magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, and for ad campaigns such as Gap, L'Oréal Paris, and Nike.
Finding a new sense of freedom in L.A., Becket also fully engaged in his new life as a gay man. He had a series of many relationships with men throughout the next fifteen years.
In September of 2009, Becket met a stranger at a coffee shop in Silver Lake who invited him to his church in Hollywood called Reality L.A. Becket reluctantly agreed to attend the service. After hearing the sermon that Sunday, Becket was utterly transformed by the gospel and gave his life to Christ. He also knew on that day when God revealed Himself to him that homosexuality was a sin and that he could no longer live that life. Becket was more than happy to count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus his Lord.
Becket spends much of his time in ministry speaking at churches, universities, and conferences helping believers (and non-believers) understand this issue biblically, theologically, culturally, and personally. Balancing grace and truth when teaching on this subject is of primary importance. His goal is to challenge the current cultural narrative about sexuality in general and homosexuality in particular by demonstrating through his personal testimony and biblical truths that, yes, homosexuality is still a sin, and that following Christ is infinitely more satisfying and joyous.
He has lived all over the world in major cities such as Rome, Vienna, and Tokyo.
Becket graduated from Talbot School of Theology at Biola University in 2017 with a Master of Arts in Theology.
Becket’s book, A Change of Affection: A Gay Man’s Incredible Story of Redemption, with a
foreword by Francis Chan, published by Thomas Nelson, released July 30, 2019.

Dear Becket I would like to add a short comment about Jordan Peterson. I have heard his daughter speak about her mother as a devout catholic who, in her upbringing. frequently talked a lot about the catholic faith. I have also understood from others, that Jordan's wife is a catholic Christian. However, he himself speaks of his wife as a person who consciously seeks out friends who are deeply committed to their faith, but he does not speak of her as a believer. However, she would appear to be deeply seeking. That is as much as I can offer to the Conversation. Thank you Becket. God bless you. My name - Steve

I have been following Jordan Peterson since 2016 and he was instrumental to my coming to faith in Christ. I was a hardcore atheist and definitely of a similar opinion to Sam Harris that no rational person could possibly believe in God or Jesus. But I held these opinions from a state of almost complete ignorance of the Bible. What I was familiar with was Jung and Freud and Nietzsche, etc. I listened to every moment of Peterson's biblical series (and more) and he really opened my mind to the real question that I refused to look at, namely: "if not God, then what?" (Edit: and "what makes me think I'm so much smarter than believers" as well) However, I have not listened to him since I came to faith because, although he has a brilliant mind and asks great questions, he's missing the Gospel. I have prayed for him to soften his heart to the gospel many times both for his sake but also for the sake of the Kingdom. Can you imagine his intellect fighting for the good news?? It would be an amazing sight, I believe. Loved this conversation.

I think God is using him in a big way, without him completely understanding it. JP was a stepping stone for me, a way to transition form an anti-christian, anti-rules, hurt, broken, sick, chaotic mess into a deeper thinking, christian. Eventually Jesus took off and I stopped being attracted to JP all that much, stopped watching. But I could never deny how important his lectures, insights, dedication to his work and his audience and just pure compassion for the world, had a huge, huge impact on me and served me a ton at the starting point in my journey to the Truth. it's been years and I still feel like I'm in the very beginning of the journey, but when I look back... a lot has been done, so gently and patiently. Thank you, Yeshua.

Five years ago I was an atheist. A friend of mine introduced me to Bill Moyer’ interviews of Joseph Campbell in “The Power of Myth.” I was fascinated. Joe Rogan introduced me to Dr. Peterson and I was obsessed. Then my sister was born-again. She started praying for me and throwing CS Lewis books at me. I was born-again about a year ago. Once I was born-again I stopped listening to Dr. Peterson. Now I listen to The Bible, Mike Winger, Beckett Cook, Alisa Childers, Dr. Leighton Flowers, etc… When I was an atheist, Peterson’s secular analysis of the Bible was rich and compelling. As a believer, Peterson’s secular analysis of the Bible is stale, flat, and not true. This flip in my perspective taught me humility. The problem with the Bible is the Observer Effect. The reader finds what they want to find. Atheists read the Bible to prove it wrong. Surprise…they prove it wrong. Secularists read it to find an efficient way to engineer human beings and societies. They find some parts they wrench out of context and put together a Rube Goldberg Machine. One Bible Scholar said to understand the Bible the reader must read it with Love. I’m finally realizing I must read the Bible with Love, because the Christain God is Love. In doing so, I am learning the point of the Bible…to know God, my creator and to follow his plan. For the Christain, life on Earth is preparation for eternal life in God’s Kingdom. We prepare by denying ourselves, taking up our cross, and following the light of the world, Jesus Christ. Todd Rundgren , the Atheist/Agnostic was right. Thank you, God. Thanks, sis.

Amen, great comment! I couldn't agree more! And honestly, it's testimonies like yours that demonstrate the best possible outcome of interacting with the ideas of crypto-christian guys like Peterson; that they act as an introduction to the power of the Bible, and as a gateway into at least considering the concept of god. It's sad that we have to leave Jordan behind as we go past conceptions of god and forward into *relationship* with *The* *Living* *God* , but let's pray that Jordan finally leap across the metaphysical chasm he has helped so many secular/materialist people reconsider for themselves.

@@FinalLugiaGuardian I would say that Peterson is painfully aware of the hopeless ineptitude of human words to refer to God. He says that God is not real in the same way we're real, and he's right. Same thoughts here. Been listening to both of them for years. I'm 1/4 the way thru this talk and stopped to read the comments yours stood out. Wondering how Bethel can come to a foregone conclusion after going to a 2018 lecture --- Seriously? He was just coming off of Benzo addiction withdrawal (given the script by a Dr due to the stress of his wife's cancer and in rehab with suicidal ideation due to a horrific, painful process. It was then that he began a big "transformation" or better yet started to gain far more biblical perspectives. It's almost 2023 and he has grown substantially and probable doesn't want to openly declare his Faith b/c of the tremendous attention it would create. He's a sensitive man and he went thru alot of stress over the pronoun issue. As Christians we need to show compassion for him. It is obvious he is He's remaining in low profile--- I hope Beckett has him on his show!

I did and how does the Scripture say we are to view and interact with the world and non Christians? To your point, the assessment is a simple one, he has not professed faith, so according to the scripture he is someone who God loves, he is sinner in need of a savior. Loved this conversation. To me, I find it great that Dr. Peterson doesn't answer that he is a Christian if he isn't. I believe from what I've seen is that he is currently "counting the cost". I thought it was quite horrible when at the end of his convocation at Liberty University that they were trying hard to have him declare himself a Christian before he was ready to do so. As Christians we are in a hurry to get people saved and to our discredit many fall away because they have neglected to consider being all in. If God's time is not linear we do not need to rush people. We need to remember at all times that God wants him to be saved even more than we do~

This is why I speak to them in parables: ‘Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand.’ Matt. 13:13 Perhaps some people suppose they need to hear an audible voice to believe, but they circulate in such intellectual circles, I doubt if many would believe, even if they heard a voice. They might chalk it up to a dream or some psychedelic flashback. I am only familiar with Jordan P., and not the other gentlemen you mentioned, and I have seen him literally in tears when speaking about the love and mercy of Jesus; he is so close. Close is good, but close only works if you finally reach a destination. Personally, I had to recognize my own sinfulness, and I asked God, "If you are real, please reveal Yourself to me," and He certainly did that for me. Not being raised a Christian, I had never read more than a few verses from the bible, but by the time I had read the New Testament, there was no doubt in my mind that Jesus Christ is Lord. Not only was there love, mercy and forgiveness, but the wisdom I found absolutely floored me, and the realization that there was a literal hell scared me to death. Jordan is almost there, and I pray that he takes that final step and enter into the Kingdom of God. Great show Becket!

God gives helpful advice to everyone who obeys Him and protects all of those who live as they should. Prov. 2:7

I love this conversation, and it flooded my eyes with tears, reflecting on how the Lord "grabbed me by the scruff of the neck" , when I was dying in 2016. I was not seeking or inquisitive at all regarding God/Jesus, as I laid there dying, but out of God's neverending mercy, He spoke to my heart, and led me out of my nightmare situation, and from that moment on, I sought Him with all my heart. I pray everyone has a situation like that, because it was undeniable that God is REAL & ALIVE living amongst us, and there is no way anyone could convince me otherwise now. I would have certainly gone to Hell that day had I died, and I had no idea I was heading to Hell for eternity. I think before that moment, my heart was so hardened by the world, and while I was dying, I came to the end of my flesh, hence was able to hear the Lord speak to my heart on the spiritual level. All I know now for certain is that I can hear the Lord speak to my heart daily now since that experience, and HE is the one that showed me in 2019 what was quickly coming for us, and HE convicted me to not comply to any of the plandemic wickedness, and to warn as many as would listen. He is such a good good Father, and I'm eternally grateful to Him, and will serve Him the best a wretch like myself can. I have prayed for Peterson before, because just like you two discussed, I felt he was on the verge of coming into the truths, and I know what a powerful testimony he could be on this earth during these evil days. Thank you Becket!

I pray that Dr. Peterson will recognize that man's universal problem is sin. It is the cause of conflicts, the source of lies, the default of all human beings. And the only solution to this sin problem is to believe in the substitutionary death of Jesus. He died to pay the penalty of sins and all we need to do is to put our trust in Him, to repent of sins and rely on Him to sanctify us with His Word. Then he will find meaning to his life..

Am a fan of both you and Chynna and was delighted to see you mention JP! Sharing the same city, at one time, as JP, several years ago, before he became the phenom he is now, I had the privilege of interviewing him at his home here in Toronto, about a documentary I was thinking about doing and wanted him to be a part of it. The topic was on the simple little subject, of Truth 🥴😳🥴- what was I thinking!!!!!???? He was very gracious to me even though the doc wasn't fully formulated in my mind. I ended up sharing my story of how I came to Christ, also supernaturally, and began praying for him from that point. Two years after that, all hell broke loose against him at UofT propelling him into the limelight, shortly after that. Not saying at all that what had happened to him was due to my prayers, but wanted to make the point that with all that did happen to him, I no longer needed to give any further thought about my passion at the time, of addressing what seemed like an error in people's thinking when it came to looking at life truthfully - all that JP is and was about at that time. Since then, he has certainly lived out that analysis of the Truth, which I thought I wanted do through my, what now seems, silly documentary. I really enjoyed watching your interview with Bethel and just wanted to say that I totally agree with you Becket, about coming to faith involving some sort of revelation to ignite the human spirit into awareness that we even have a spirit, as well as that conviction that can only come through the Holy Spirit! It doesn't have to translate into being an emotional experience as it was with you Becket, but ultimately it is a circumcision of the heart that suddenly recognizes that there is a new perspective on what we thought was real. Maybe it all starts with a spirit of humility? JP has humility in spades, at least on the outside, but ultimately it's only the Holy Spirit who can best judge that. Just wanted to say that as I think about how close he appears to be to taking that leap of faith, his situation reminds me of when we see file after file after file, to infinitude, on a computer screen. It is a picture of where people like him get taken by intellectualism. I'm not one who thinks that when we come to faith that we leave our intellects at the door and I'm so grateful for your intellectual commentary on things cultural - you add so much to the cultural discussion, which is sorely needed within the Christian community. But I'm drawn to what Paul wrote about strongholds. I think being caught in the trap of trusting only that which can be explained or reasoned, is as much of a stronghold upon a soul as any kind of sin, habit or addiction. Intellectualism, although it appears as highly advantageous and contributes a lot to human thought, can lead to us cutting out the spiritual part of our humanity. We've all been groomed by our society to prize the intellect and devalue things of the S/spirit. However, isn't it interesting that we live in a time where many are "identifying" as "spiritual but not religious" despite all this silent grooming? Probably, like many, my heart broke when I saw Jordan speaking and weeping about his struggle to accept the notion of the kind of role that this Jesus could possibly take in his life, yet he couldn't make that aforementioned "leap." As I watched that heart-wrenching interview, I could feel how trapped he was in the intellectual matrix and had no way to get out of it, despite his accumulated wisdom, knowledge and psychological understanding of the human condition. I couldn't help but feel his intellectual pain. I'm glad you made the point about coming to faith being more than just making an 'ascent' to faith. You were right in saying that it is more than that. If that's all it was, I think JP would have made that ascent by now. He needs what you had, which is revelation of the Holy Spirit, who, as a person in the Godhead, will reveal to him everything that is in his own heart. Maybe it's time we stop making "ascent" for things of the intellect only, as that is only half of what we are as human beings. Through your rigorous questioning, while acknowledging that every soul's true home belongs in the spiritual realm, you bring both intellectual and spiritual integrity into this wired world. People in and out of the church, no longer have to be embarrassed by mention of things belonging to the spiritual realm. All of these well-known agnostics/atheists from Peterson, Murray and Harris, desperately need the prayers, whether they realize it or not, of those of us who unabashedly live in the spiritual realm under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Because we are talking an actual realm, it really does come down to making a leap beyond the intellect, not in denial of it, which might just only be paved through the prayers of others. Sorry to be so long-winded here, but this show provoked me into wandering if we might be on the cusp of thinking in yet another new way. As usual Becket, another great show!

This has been a great discussion! Even more intriguing to me because when I heard Bethel's name, I realized that I know her mother - we went to Bible College together. She raised an intelligent, well-spoken young lady. Regarding "experience" salvation vs. "thought-provoked" salvation, I side with Bethel's comment regarding the mystery of how God deals with each of us. Beckett needed God to get his attention in a big way. Others follow God their entire lives without what one might say is a supernatural experience. But our passion for our Savior is no different! All true Christians love the Lord and are growing in knowledge and faith. God is mysterious and varied enough to accommodate all of our needs and fulfill all desires, in Him!

I love Jordan Peterson and I truly appreciate his work. He is contributing to the good of society, especially in these days, where so many turned their backs to God and lost their way. Peterson was a key person for me to get an interest in the Bible. God was already working in me on that, and Peterson helped with his Genesis lectures. He helped me start to see that the Bible is relevant and grounded in reality. But then, after getting deeper into Scripture and know who God really is (and not who I thought He was), Peterson’s lectures on God started to feel superficial and even, pardon me, somewhat childish. There’s a stumbling block in his spiritual journey. Part of it, I think, it’s his intellect. Which is ironic... because his intellect and style of thinking is what made him relevant and popular. If He opens his heart to accept God as a personal God, much of his world and ways of thinking will collapse. He will have to change, and that can be a scary thing. But it’s absolutely worth it, of course... I pray that Jordan Peterson finds God one day. 🙏🏻 That he comes to know Jesus, the Perfect Man-God, that I know he already admires and appreciates so much, even if only on an intellectual level.

I totally agree. If you're a committed Christian, Peterson will not be of much use to you. But he has proven to be very effective at opening people's eyes to the inconsistencies of atheism, presenting them with a rationally stimulating view of belief in God and religion, and even drawing fallen away and lukewarm Christians back into a more active participation. I believe God is using him and, so far, he's been a docile and competent instrument. He made me think of the time the disciples saw somebody expelling demons and the disciples tried to stop him, but the Lord said, “Do not stop him, for whoever is not against you is for you.”

@@xaviervelascosuarez Yeah, that verse is an interesting one, given we're also supposed to "expose and avoid" those who deny Jesus is Lord in their proclamations. But I agree with you, that he has said some very good things and has been helpful. I love that he says to only speak the truth. Just that his reasons have nothing to do with pleasing God. And his explanation on how boys learn and develop through roughhousing-play with their dad, from a toddler, was a huge wake up call, to realise how VITALLY important men are. I guess my initial adoration of him turned to betrayal when I heard all his worldly reasons and adoration of the Satanist Yung. Just have to say, his stance that women wear make-up, only to be sexually appealing to men, is WAY off. His very made-up daughter should be able to tell him, lol.

I feel like Dr. Peterson is being diminished here. Even though he is not a believer he encourages people to go to church and be godly. He believes there’s no better way to life than the Christian belief. He made an interview in the Joe Rogan podcast and he said in that interview: “The Bible is the precondition for truth.” So, I know he is not Christian but he is helping a lot of people to go back to church and believes wholeheartedly that our whole western culture has as its base in the word of God. Thus, I like him and respect him a lot.

Wow, this was interesting. I agree with what you are saying Becket around the 50 timestamp mark. The Holy Spirit definitely need to draw us and do a work in our hearts. Maybe it's the difference between head knowledge and experiencing a touch from God in our hearts. The other thing I want to point out and maybe it's obvious because apparently I state the obvious a lot is that Jordan seems to be interpreting the scriptures as a metaphor or archetype. I don't know if he actually believes in the historical facts of the Bible. As I am learning how to properly interpret the scriptures I was told not to read meaning into the text. There are prescriptive text and descriptive text. Oh, this is interesting as I was the last few minutes which I didn't yesterday. It seems Becket and Bethel do have differing opinions regarding how a person is saved. I am leaning more towards only by the grace and mercy of God is anyone saved. God saved Paul. I know this gets very deep and debate-able. Anyway, praise God if you are saved. That is what I will reflect on today!

I have explained it this way. As humans we are constantly at crossroads in our lives or may better described as a room with two doors leading out of it. One door leads closer to God. The other further away. As people make choices to move away from God the doors in that direction often get larger and easier to pass through. The further one goes down the path the more desperate one must become to find his way back to God. On the otherhand as people choose to take steps toward God the doors become more and more inviting towards him. Thanks be to God that he is a “whosoever will God” and truly wants all to come to him. And so as long as there is breath one can still be drawn to Him. It is my prayer that Peterson and others like him ultimately are drawn to God and find the peace and joy they so obviously want. Becket I very much enjoy you podcasts and your testimony. Keep up the good work.

The concern is that he may mislead people away from Jesus and the truth found in him. Let us pray for his eyes to be opened. Jesus said, "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day" Jn 6:44.

God did speak to me audibly so that I could be saved. This is what happened: For years my husband and I had been trying to have a baby. Finally, at age 40 I conceived. We were over the moon! Prenatal tests showed a possible problem with the baby and my husband threatened to dump me penniless on the streets unless I had an abortion. My family agreed with him and I had nobody to turn to and I felt so helpless and hopeless that I had the abortion, (at 20 weeks and three days) knowing as I swallowed the pills that I was killing my baby. I spent over 24 hours in labour and of course my daughter was born dead. I was so desperate from the grief and guilt which only became worse as the months progressed. The depression and nightmares wouldn't stop and left me so afraid even to sleep at night.(nightmares such as walking into a room and seeing the decomposing bodies of babies in a big pile covered in blood and flies and having to search through them to find my baby) Finally I made the decision to kill myself. I was lying on my bed one afternoon crying and planning how I was going to do it and a Voice spoke to me. He spoke my name. Then He said it again, then a third time. Then the Voice said "Everything is going to be all right." I sat up, looked around. Nobody was in the room. In fact, nobody was in the house. I looked out the windows, the neighbours on both sides were out and the only person in sight was my husband. he was down the very far end of the garden mowing the lawn. There was nobody around who could have been speaking to me. I hadn't the faintest idea what was going on. I thought to myself "Either I'm going crazy or maybe it was the voice of God". So, feeling rather silly, I spoke aloud and said, "Is that You, God?" There was no reply. I spoke again and said "If that is You God, give me a sign." More silence. So then I really didn't know what was going on. I didn't even know if God was real or not. The next day we had to travel to a family reunion and on the way went through a small town. I always enjoyed going through that town as it always had a large billboard on the roadside with a beer advertisement and the beer always looked so wonderfully cool and refreshing (even thoughI don't drink). The billboard had been there at least since the 1980's and always had a beer advertisement on it, for as long as I can remember. So I was looking out for it as we drove into town, and there it was, sure enough. On this day, it did NOT have a beer advertisement on it. Instead, it was black, like a chalk board and in big lettering, hand written, as if in chalk, it said: "WELL, YOU DID ASK ME FOR A SIGN." Signed, GOD. As you can imagine, you could have knocked me down with a feather! A day later as we were driving back home again, I was so excited to see the billboard again. This time, it once again had the old familiar beer advertisement It was then that I beleived that He was indeed real, and had spoken to me. A little while after that I was born again, received the Holy Spirit and a week later, baptised. When my husband found out I had become a Christian, he screamed at me "I refuse to be married to a Christian!!! You can have me, or you can have your Jesus! I looked at him and said "I choose Jesus." Our marriage ended. But I still have Jesus and I know that I will see Him when He comes to receive me to Himself and I will see my daughter too, praise God!!!

I'm strongly with Bethel's position that "assent" is necessary and sufficient to any person's decision to embrace the Christian faith. Becket's insistence on (the happenstance of) an individual phenomenal encounter with Jesus is, in my view a conceit. Yes, many are fortunate to have such definitive, instantaneous, life-changing experiences but this is by no means common to everyone. Many are the roads to conversion and I for one appreciate Dr. McGrew's measured and realistic stance.

This interview was such an accurate study of Jordan Peterson's view of Christianity! I felt he had some reverence towards Christianity but hadn't understood the full gospel.

I have come to same conclusion as I was very interested in him and rise to notoriety- I at first worried that he was offering something that would be a counterfeit to real conversion and relationship with Christ. While this may be an issue with the many followers he has - I can see he is so close and an honest sincere person and pray for him to be pushed across the threshold. I pray for those that follow him that they can take one step further as well that nothing in this life is sustainable without His power.

i really enjoyed the little debate becket and bethel had at the end about God actively reaching out to people vs people opening up their hearts and reaching out for God. Such an interesting conversation and i kept pausing to think out what i would say if i were there haha. God did not reach out and grab me, I first believed through apologetics (and growing up in the church), but when I believed, I did not have saving faith until years later. God was very patient with me and slowly opened my heart through prayer and reading of his Word upon going to a very Bible-centric church. So God is very active and his Spirit does reach out to all of us in a way, but I also think that people really do need to humble themselves and seek God. I also strongly think that there is enough evidence to intellectually believe even without a supernatural or spiritual experience. But this belief can be stagnant and never become true faith if you don't humble yourself, realize your sins, and if God never opens your eyes to these things. I praise God for saving me. It is Him alone who receives the glory, but that is not to say that we don't have any responsibility or any agency to seek Him. It is different for everyone though, Becket, like Paul, was blessed with such a sudden and powerful conversion story. But ALL of our conversion stories are so wonderful.

I accepted Jesus as a child when I was not looking for Him, so I believe He "reached out" to me because of His mercy. He knew that I would desperately need Him early on in life. I believe God chooses us before we choose Him. I find it fascinating that some choose Him and others reject Him.

I agree with Becket...There are times when people need God to reach them in a special way to get their attention...Only he knows how to do this- He knows everyone's heart and how to reach them...and it's up to that person to accept his calling.

This was a very interesting interview. Bethel McGrew is smart and articulate so I will have to check her out. I think Dr. Peterson has many people praying for him. He has come through his illness and his wife’s illness fairly recently. His wife had her battle with cancer and became a believer. The Triune God is a strange/difficult conception for anyone to understand. If he reads and interprets the Bible from a psychological perspective - which he does - then he will definitely need a God moment to touch his heart. To some extent, I think he is doing God’s work - he just doesn’t know that yet! 😘❤️🇨🇦🙏🙏🙏

I'm a fan of Mr. Peterson!! I'm commenting before I watch so can't wait to hear this. I also like his round table talk on Exodus he's doing over on the Daily wire. I was listening to a song today Becket and you popped in my mind. I dont know if you know someone who needs to hear it , so I'm asking you to listen to it and do with it what you will. It's Zach Williams' song , " Heart of God." Thank you, and God Bless.
