The first trailer for Kung Fu Panda 4 has finally released after months of leaks and speculation. But despite Dreamworks' steady and impressive track record when it comes to sequels, something about Kung Fu Panda 4 feels off. Is this really a necessary sequel?

To be fair, even the original people who were writing/making the movies wanted 6 movies. They wanted to do two trilogies. One would show Po’s journey to becoming a master, with 1-3, and these next ones would show his journey as a master, in 4-6.

I don't mind Kung Fu Panda 4 existing but what I do mind is that DreamWorks wants to make TWO MORE SEQUELS. I'm not kidding they are planning to make another trilogy after this 4th movie, the reason why I like the idea of this movie is because it sounds like a love letter to the entire franchise and could be a great epilogue to Po's journey

IMO, I like where DreamWorks is going with this. Them dividing a trilogy in two for Po as a student and a master sounds promising because it was done effectively in media before. Similarly, Minecraft Story Mode was divided into two arcs: the Witherstorm arc and the Portal arc. Each arc consisted of four episodes that explored different challenges and themes for the characters. Kung Fu Panda can benefit from this sense of progression and development.

I like Minecraft Story Mode being brought up because damn, that one surprised me in terms of quality. The best difference really was the divide between Part 1 being very externally driven with the motivation given by an insurmountable force, while Part 2 was very character-driven.

Something else that kinda bothers me about the art direction and character design is the chameleon's height. Up til now, all the animals have more or less been to scale with their real life sizes, which led to some pretty interesting scenes with characters like Mantis or Viper. The chameleon breaks that as she is very tall and lanky

Not particularly but unlike the Toy Story movies which had an ending that felt like a true ending TWICE! Kung Fu Panda 3 didn’t feel like a complete bookend to the series, so while I don’t think the fourth one was needed, I’m still curious to see where it goes story wise, the previous villains returning is also neat :)

The og character designer Nicolas Marlet for many characters including Shen, Tai lung, Ooguei, Tigress, Po etc is one of my most favorite artists in the industry.The way he designs the characters and blocky beauty that the og kung fu panda style is, I believe, partly because of him. While he has worked on all the films so far I have a feeling that he didn't work on this which is a huge fucking bummer for me.

It looked to me like the lesson Po has to learn in this movie is that there is good in people who "are the bad guy". So far the villains have been straightforward bad guys that Po has to defeat. But Zhen is a criminal, Po has to recruit an army of criminals, and Tai Lung seemingly being back and having his kung fu removed. He might have to see the good in bad people in order to defeat the villain. Maybe the idea of Po being a "spiritual leader" is that he can't just save people from the bad guys, but he needs to inspire people to be better than they are. Zhen will need to become a hero. Perhaps Tai Lung will have some sort of redemption arc.

Yeah Tai Lung being in the first poster tells me that he's gonna have an arc of some kind, maybe Po helps him learn a brand new style unique to only him or it might be an arc of him and Shifu reconciling, either way I'm very interested in how they handle Tai Lung

Yeah I'm 100% more concerned for this movie, due to the lack of the furious five in the trailer and the childish gimmicks we've seen so far, (and also Awkwafina -) I want it to happen, the villain seems nice but it lacks something that the previous 3 instalments had. I feel KFP4 has just taken a step back of development and attachments it spent years perfecting, and a step into Boss Baby route.

Kung Fu Panda is about Po's development from a student, into a master. The furious 5 really serve no purpose to Po anymore, I forgot which movie it was became he became their master in one of them already. It's time for Po to move on

The Furious Five are in the cast list, don't worry. We're getting them back, they (probably) just aren't the main focus of the movie. Besides, DreamWorks trailers always tend to emphasize the movie's comedic moments. Like, I don't think anyone really could have seen the briliance of Tai Lung's character coming based on the trailers for the first film. Edit: ...So I was mistaken...

Something I couldn't help but feel when I saw the wolf character was "Oh another Elsa face", and then I remembered this was supposed to be Dreamworks and not Disney. Was it so hard to give her more angular eyes? Even in the trailer shot when she looks like she's angry, her eyes are still round and barely are crossed. Only in that Blue/Orange cross shot do her eyes look more natural, and I feel that should be more her more default look rather than a determined look she gives Poe there. Like look at Tigress, how she has angular eyes that compliment her design despite being more "fuller" in her head and arm design.

yeah, the fox/wolf girl has a very generic design, with a very generic choice of animal. especially when you compare it with the mainly asiatic cast of animals it feels pretty lazy.

It should be noted that Kung Fu Panda 2's trailer exhibited similar traits to KF4 trailer. It used Pump It by Black Eyed Peas as a track. They also have a formula for pausing the music for gags. The difference is that the lighting seems more dramatic and it has a massive set piece at the end. However, at least from the trailers I found, it doesn't introduce Shen, one of the best things about the movie.

I'm pretty excited for this film. Personally, I love the idea of there being 6 films. The first the focusing more on Po being a student, and the other 3 being whatever comes after. My only two issues with this movie are the wolf character (forgot her name), and the new villain. I don't know what it is about the wolf character, but I get the feeling she's not going to be too interesting. And as for the new villain, my thoughts were exactly as this video stated. She's extremely similar to Kai, so that does make me concerned about more sequels. But still, looking forward to this!

I really do like the idea of Po finding a successor to the Dragon Warrior but I fear that they’ll completely butcher Po’s character in this movie and gloss over his character development for the sake of continuing the franchise. I know Dreamworks is struggling with money and these sequels are some of the only things keeping the lights on rn but I’m not okay with it when it genuinely hurts a franchise I love as much as KFP.

i was pretty skeptical on the idea of a villain who's main gimmick is to just use previous good villains to do their work (or rather transform them into I suppose), but after seeing this trailer I´ve become more hopeful because it actually looks kinda cool. I'm still skeptical on the idea tho, and I'm also overall skeptical of the quality the movie will have. but I´ll remain cautiously optimistic as I really loved the previous movies (especially the second one, probably my favorite childhood movie).

I hope they have a twist at some point in the movie where, as they established the other members of the furious 5 are elswhere, that at some point the villain captured them too and Po will have to defeat the styles of his four friends and training partners. Maybe have a really cool fight scene where the villain is rapidly switching between crane, snake, mantis, monkey, and tiger, mixing their moves and Po has to figure out how to counter a rapid barrage of 5 different styles.

The thing that worries me is that the director is Mike Mitchell, and he's directed films like; - "Trolls" - "The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part" - "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water" - "Shrek Forever After" Don't get me wrong, they're fine, but they never really grew on me. And, bringing back all the villains (INCLUDING LORD FUCKING SHEN) concerns me. Let's just hope he's fond enough of the story to give an actual continuation.

I believe in Mitchell. To be honest, Shrek 4 was great! Y’all are just mean. Giving an emotional finale (at least it was a finale then) to one of DreamWorks’ series. Sponge out of water, Mitchell actually directed the love action sequences of that movie which were really good, you can’t deny that, and I know I might get so much flack for this but: even Trolls wasn’t that terrible. It still had its good moments in that movie, though not being the best movie ever, I’d say it’s a decent movie that has some things to remember. But that is simply just me

I think a potentiallly good sequel idea would be about Po being defeated by this new style of martial art by a new villian (possibly a baboon) injured, Po exiles himself to a far unknown region. There he is taught in the ways of this ancient kung fu by a hermit and former master Honey Badger. Having lived in isolation for so long, Badger is a little insain. Po learns this new fighting style, musters the strenght to return and defeats this new Foe

you're missing the point. puss in boots was just a mediocre spinoff movie that nobody really remembers. puss in boots the last wish was an unexpected sequel, and it went in a completely different direction from the first movie. the second movie really explored the idea of living and developed puss' character immensely, and made him a far more memorable character than he ever was before that. meanwhile kung fu panda 4 will be an unexpected sequel, but for a trilogy which pretty much fully explored the journey of po and his path to becoming a dragon warrior. I'll be glad if this movie actually gives po more real character development and acts as a worthy follow up, but I don't have a feeling it will. puss in boots the last wish was a sequel nobody knew that they needed, while kung fu panda 4 already feels like an unneeded sequel

I couldn't quite put my finger on what was wrong, it somehow looks like the series on Netflix mixed with the look of the older movies. You managed to explain why it feels to me like that, it's the character designs not being in cohesion and being the lighting change from less ambient shadows to a ambient light which means there are less shadows overall making it feel a bit more flat.

My big issue is the villains, after 2, they became so generic and pointless. It went from “I’m going to become who I’m meant to be” and “I will build my own empire” to “I will steal all Kung Fu” and… “I will steal all Kung Fu…” Without any personal connections or at least a dark reflection of a character, they mean nothing and the plot feels unnecessary as a result.

Idk but I'm excited to see Tai Lung returning, I hope he has a bigger role than just showing up for a bit to have his kung fu stolen then sent away. Seems like a good foundation for a redemption arc for him, where at the end Po possibly passes the title of Dragon Warrior to him with Po taking on his bigger responsibilities.

I know, right? Where is the creativity? We got Shen out of this franchise, and I could've watched a whole prequel special just about him. Even a villain from one of the TV series (all THREE OF THEM) is pretty much just Shen+Kai. I give them credit that the two made later had more solid ongoing stories when the first show was more of a "everday lives" story. Also are the films just totally ignoring all tv show and specials? I mean we don't need a spirit bomb power where everyone contributes but if the film is not going to have th e furious5 around then I hope something more interesting than we know is going on, in the very least.

I watched the movie, and... let's just say your points about Po's character development from 2 and 3 not lining up with 4 are VERY much on point. The "inner peace" joke completely took me off guard as well. I didn't even remember how Po understood and proudly wore all the complex facets of his identity in the third movie, but you bringing that speech up not only reminded me how much I love the trilogy, but how disappointing 4 was. That's just my opinion, but WOW did I feel let down.

I don't know how I feel about this movie. I'm very skeptical. The only bright side is how creative the villain is. Though i do wonder how her powers exactly work. I'm cautiously optimistic. I think we were all asking if Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was necessary, but we all know that movie turned out waaay better than it had any right to be, so I'm open to the possibility this movie will cook too. If nothing else, I have high expectations that Viola Davis is going to make a great villain.

I love KFP and I have decent hopes for the movie, but I kinda got the impression that the Chameleon was them trying to do Kai and the Jade Zombies again because they weren't very well executed in the third movie. It didn't help that the first villain they showed returning was Tai Lung, who was weirdly absent from Kung Fu Panda 3 despite Kai having his Chi, yet for some reason never decided to use him once.

7:07 Wasn't Po supposed to become the teacher in the third installment, why is he still relying on Shifu for training or advice. The obvious thing DreamWorks could do for a sequel is making him take his own journey relying on himself and bringing in new characters who aren't there for cringe 'children + violence = funny' type of jokes. Hell, maybe it could be a story about him passing the mantel onto someone else to be the dragon warrior as he ascends to a spiritual leader (maybe I figured out the plot already).

Imo even Panda 3 wasn't necessary. 1 & 2 came out close to each other (three years apart), I saw them both in theaters as a kid, then they teased 3 at the end of 2 and then... nothing for so long. When 3 came out five years later I barely heard about it and didn't really have interest in seeing it. Went back and watched it last year and it was perfectly fine, but idk I was perfectly happy with just 1 & 2 living in my head and 2 being a conclusion with inner peace I guess. And like 3 wasn't bad but it didn't feel necessary either, take it or leave it. Maybe 4 will be the same, idk.

The trailer definitely was worrying, but I’m still holding on to some hope for the movie. There’s clearly a lot they aren’t showing. I’m pretty sure it’s already confirmed Shen and Kai are going to show up in the movie, and they aren’t even mentioned in the trailer. Li Shan is in the poster for the movie, and he appears in like, one shot of the trailer. So hopefully there’s a lot of interesting stuff left that we haven’t seen.

Is it necessary, nah? Kung Fu Panda 3 ended a good note to complete Po's character arc, having him train the new generation. But unlike How to Train Your Dragon 3, it's not an ending that closes the door to any follow up. So I'm not gonna complain if we get a new one.

They should’ve used an emotional manipulator/charming villain since they’ve already had a brawler type, smart type, and supernatural type! It would fit the theme of “there’s good in some bad people”. It would mirror that theme as “There’s bad in people we believe to be good”.

The main thing that concerns me the most about this movie is its existence, that it could turn out like how Toy Story 4 did, with how unnecessary it was, as the third movie should have been the end of the series, for both franchises really, with how bastardized its main characters were and how the other characters were pushed to the side: like, Po becomes an unlikable prick, Master Shifu or the furious five become dumb oafs and Tai Lung and the other two (if they return at all that is) may not be as intimidating as they were in their respective movies

I just hope its not like 3, but more like 1 and 2. Thats honestly how it decides it. 3s' villain wasn't a real villain, and po's journey was nothing like the others. It didn't ask critical questions like the first two. KFP 1: "What makes me special, what makes me different than anyone else. What makes ME, NOT a LOSER?" KFP2: "Who am I? Does where do I come from effect that? What am I, if I wasn't born here?" KFP3: "uhh, who am i again... but worse?" So it all entirely depends on the above. ^ Instead of who am I, or What am I, maybe they should answer "What should I do? Who should I become?" "If I am the most powerful kung-fu master to ever be, and I am the determiner of where kung fu should go... how could I lead this? How can I effect this generation?" That would be amazing to answer. But if the villain is just another Kai where the only bad-ass-ness we get from him is the same replayed slowed down reverbed pop-song... it doesn't need to exist.

I fully agree with the "This movie isn't nessecary and too similar to older titles." I think Dreamworks is having a bit of a problem right now, where they try to bring back stuff. After The Last Wish, they said they'd bring back Shrek, even after that was pretty much closed off with an incredible ending, so why keep it going? I'd much rather see them do something new and original.

It's not only unnecessary. It's also predictable. Po is gonna give the mantle of the DW to the Fox. (can't remember her name) The Chameleon is gonna beat every single one of Po's previous villians, easily but then get beaten by the fox and Po by the power of working together. Throughout their journey Po is gonna learn what it means to be a spiritual leader, that's obvious and likely by Oogway teaching him again while also being by side the fox and learn that she is qualified to be fit as a successor, teaching him a few tricks of her own despite being a thief. Po can't beat the chameleon on his own, but when all is seemingly lost the fox is gonna come in and save the day. Happy ending.

Idea: What if making Zhen to be seen to be mid at kung fu, beating some guys but needing to be saved by the furious 5, which po then sences Zhen as someone with the spirit to be good at the kung fu, and po teaches her as the story goes along and see her get better until the end where she fights alongside po. This could mean the continuation of his goal and finally retire from dragon warrior and create a new one, finishing the cycle of it.

your point on the lighting is especially true since kfp has always had lots of color symbolism and visually distinct scenes. kinda reminds me of a video essay about animated naturalism in spiderverse, where they specifically "turn off the studio front lights" and let the backlights illuminate the characters

The main thing that'll determine whether I welcome this film into my headcanon is what they mean by Po becoming a "spiritual leader". Based on what the second film said about inner peace and what Po achieved by the end of the third film, I've always thought that if there was a sequel announced that Po should become a Master, a kung fu teacher. Him becoming a "leader" is not too far detached from my expectations, so I do want to see how this turns out.

Dreamworks has always been up and down. Since they make a variety of films, they can miss a lot, but when they hit.. They hit hard. I'd say cautious optimism is better, as dreamworks hasn't milked as bad as Disney. We can only hope 🙏
