What's the difference between lane splitting and filtering? So often when I was doing any king of filtering in the US or even if I am just casually passing someone on my motorcycle, people seem to be ok to risk running me over so I can't get by.
I am always so surprised at how people are ok to use their cars to block motorcycles. They really have no clue as to the dangers involved if I crash.
Lane splitting or filtering will take some definite getting used to in the US. In Europe, people literally move out of your way so you can pass. When we are just sitting behind a car we are sitting ducks to get smacked into from behind. A fender-bender for a car can mean death or serious injury for a motorcyclist.
Is it dangerous? Actually, studies from California have shown that it actually reduced injuries and deaths on motorcycles that actually utilize lane splitting.
Of course, the videos you see online of people bombing down the middle line (mostly on crotch rockets) are more the guys that are killing it for the rest of us.
We need to not only fight for these rights to protect ourselves but also utilize them well once we get them.
You can get involved by sending letters to your local government or signing petitions online to gain support.
