I'm just looking to start a conversation about poking holes into the notion of one country/culture being better than another. I say that we should try to view ourselves as global citizens and seek to leave a positive impact on everything we touch. If you're a global citizen, you'll quickly pivot away from trying to rank countries/cultures and take in as many experiences as possible. No one place is perfect for you and it changes depending on your life circumstance. Who's with me in trying to uplift our brothers & sisters instead of denigrating them?

This comparison is right on Debs! As a Kenyan who moved to the US 5 years ago, i would move back to Kenya in a heartbeat. Lets start with the positives first. I love the opportunities America has to offer. Infact i had this conversation with an Asian guy with Vietnamese parents who has grown up in the US his whole life. It's when we spoke that he understood why his parents always tell him and his siblings how lucky they are to be here in the US because his parents didn't have a good life back in Vietnam. I personally would have been working in a field I did not like simply because my high school grade determined my future career which was teaching. I am now an accountant in the US and honestly, the opportunities were there soon i started college. Career wise I am happy but socially i am very unhappy. Kenyan vibe and American are like apples and oranges. Besides the ever annoying public officials and a few things that ticked me off, i miss Kenya. There's no social life here in the US, thus the phrase , no man is an Island. It's a 24/7 365 working nation. It's hard to vacation here due to the cost. So yes, if you do have money in Kenya, stay there and enjoy sanity and a little bit of less uptight humans. Some of the things i love here is courtesy, good customer service, most people are honest and are respectful of people's time . So if you vslue honesty and integrity, there's more of that here but Kenyans need to work on that. I love how communal we are in Kenya compared to here. If you like things organized a certain way, you will enjoy America. Structures are organized, roads and even people walk in an organized manner 😂. They walk like they drive so you are not bumping into each other and hitting shoulders . Ooh and just the simple courtesy of people holding doors for each other... not everyone but a majority of them. That said, I miss the Kenyan vibe and the people and planning to settle there in the future and live in both countries. I think you living up North in the Boston and New York areas warmed you up for Kenya. Lol...

When I'm in Kenya I notice that it is very different. Sure I'm used to more order and organization when in the U.S. but I quickly settle into that this is Kenya and it is just different. I can lament about order and organization but I'll take the affordable cost of living (for me) any day. Again, there are always trade-off and hopefully we're in a position to pick what works for us depending on where we are in life. I will take the pole, pole lifestyle and some chaos any day over the pressure of NYC. I'm aware that many will choose NYC because I too wanted that until I lived it 😊. Now let's be clear, everyone should have their basic needs met regarding food and housing. I'm also not naive in thinking that we can all pick-up and move to another country. The folks who can't need our attention.

Totally agreed 1000% with what you just said. Courtesy in Kenya and good customer service mannerisms have a long way to go. You had me at Americans walk in the streets like they are driving. 🤣😂😅. Not in Kenya. Ooh No! You would get you shoulder dislocated if someone bumped into you in the busy streets of Nairobi. lol. But I love Kenyan majority fresh food and fruits. Can never go wrong with that. More natural foods, air, weather, except Nairobi's pollution from Un serviced cars that emit black toxic smoke in the air. That I don't miss. lolest.

Hi Debs! Great video as always (btw, i had promised to come over soon- and I'm very much on my way😅). I do agree that yes most Americans do miss out on the true scope of being 'global citizens'. I feel as if I got adequate experiences with the world from earlier on because my dad's job moved us around quite a bit (also the Cheese-eater in me inherited that European novelty-seeking gene😂). But Whereas I do feel as if life in Kenya was many times better than life back State-side, I got to learn that it really is so because of the fact that we are foreigners. Look at it in this way- when my family was stationed in Nairobi, our house cost about $3000-4500 in monthly rent which is about the rent for a decent apartment in SOHO. It was in the Runda neighborhood where most other expats and diplomats live. We as foreigners would see this as a steal because imagine being able to rent a house for $3000 in the Hills! But I got to learn that very few Kenyans could see that as affordable- different standards of living. In the same way, we are treated quite differently even by local authorities and service providers simply by the fact that our nationalities 'buy' us some level of 'respect'. Looking at it from a Kenyan's perspective (having talked to a few) the processes there are slowed down by the same public officials who you'd have to pay something extra to have your way. Even then, I definitely with you when you say that there really is no single greatest country in the world- but also, I guess that ranking a given country better than your own home is actually relative compared to the lives of the natives. Regardless, I still have nothing but praises for Kenya. and still continue to wish you a great time!!!

Thank you for the very thoughtful comment Peter. There is definitely no single greatest country. There are always tradeoffs in one area or another. However the question is moot because we don't need to rank countries or cultures but yet it permeates the American psyche. I see it as, life is short so why not spend time exploring and enjoying what it has to offer as opposed to staying in a bubble while justifying that your bubble is the best. I have so much to say about being treated differently here in Kenya as a foreigner but too much for the comments at the moment. You may count on me expressing myself in a future storytime video on the topic.😊

This poor American doesn't believe It is the Greatest, but I _am_ an outlier. I *Love America,* please don't misunderstanding me. Always will. It's an amazing place. But I do think each country has it's positive and negatives.. You are right, it's a waste of time to rank one against the other. I grew up in SoCal; Grew up with the dichotomy between the Hispanics living there, and the _"story about"_ the Hispanics living there. Always has seemed to me that American Media slander anyone who isn't American, or at least _agreeing_ with American politics. Taught me to judge people for myself. And that when someone is talking about someone else; I try to remember that they are saying a lot more about themselves, then they are _'possibly'_ saying about the _"someone else"._ I'm looking forward to expanding my horizons in 2 more months.. Just hoping I'm up to this challenge. == Flying [ I *Hate* _Flying!_ ] Half Way Across The World, Just To Meet New Family, Friends and to See What is There! == Not Sure I Haven't Gone Completely Nuts. ..just keep telling myself I only live once. Wow wow wow,such a deep and insightful video. As one who has been privileged to travel to the 5 continents and over 40 countries I couldn't agree more to your sentiments. I am a huge believer that travel is the antidote to ignorance. There's a local saying Kamau that loosely translates to he who fails to travel believes that only the mother can cook. ( I tried not to dilute it😅) meaning that if you don't travel then you risk having a fixated mindset about certain issues,people and topics. Which can only be reconfigured by the experience of travel. Thanks sir for this.

Why people say the United States is "better," is mostly because of work, and that the currency has more value compared to Kenya. That plays a big part in the perception of Kenya being "worse." There's a lot of unemployment in Kenya, and the jobs available, pay less in comparison to The United States. What people don't realize is that, many of the jobs in the United States don't pay the cost of living, especially in places like New York, or California. It is extremely easy to look at the difference in currency and the media to get an artificial view of the country, but unless you live there, you don't know what it's really like
@RichardDebs

I doubt that currency is a factor. It is really about have a better chance of success given that the average child can get free education through high school which is a tremendous benefit. That's what I would love to see here in Kenya. I can't tell you the countless stories I've heard from locals that they are pulling together money so that they kids can go to school.

First the terms "first" and "third" world are considered derogatory, please don't use them or you come across as an entitled p****k. Second depending on what you do for a living, the pace of life in Kenya can be just as demanding than in the US. It's very career dependent!

Europeans also seem to be very limited in their worldview. You will also notice that majority of Africans with positive expectations of the west or even dating western Europeans tend to be on the lower end of the academic and intellectual scale.

@@RichardDebs This was a connection that I discovered quite by chance. You have to go back to the foundation of Kenya as a settler colony with racial hierarchy. As a foreigner, you will notice that the best educated, national school graduates, KCSE A B's, people in professions with high entry scores, tend to rarely interact with Europeans outside of work. Traditionally, these were spaces not open to Africans, so they know they have made, socially. After independence,there was a massive influx of sex tourists taking advantage of the local men and women, still common at the coast. I went to university in Europe, and noticed the massive divide and then started to find out why. The US/eastern Europe is different because it is a major university destination, so many people meet there, but in most other cases, exploitation of poverty, and hits mostly those not well knowledgeable.
