As a mechanic I tell motorcycle riders this . If your going to start your bike , only do it to go for a ride long enough to heat the oil to evaporate the water out of the oil . Don’t start it if for short periods or you will see the milking of the oil as I saw when you started the bike up . Dry sump systems on the old BSA , Nortons and Triumph had to be drained out of the the bottom after long periods of sitting or they would smoke badly . For them it was an indication of an oil check valve not doing it’s job . Gave a thumbs up for your explanation.

It's a dry sump motor and the oil will seap into the bottom end of the motor with long term sitting. If your not going to start it in the winter drain the oil tank and get the bike off the ground so your tires don't get flat spots. Ride safe ✌

I have a 2000 model 883 Sportster that I've had since 2012. The thing used to leave oil everywhere from the day I got it. It sat for a couple of years after I had an accident in '17 that left me in hospital for a while. When I got round to putting it back on the road there's no oil in the tank. The only place it could have gone was into the engine, and after looking at the oil system plan in the manual, figured it must be the check valve which lives in behind where the oil filter screws on. Ordered a new ball & spring & measured the new one next to the old. The old spring had taken a set & was noticeably shorter than it ought to have been. That was 3 years ago and it's been perfectly fine since. The old thing's still a heavy spitter though. It shows it's displeasure at having the oil tank filled up more than half way through the safe zone by depositing copious quantities of oil into it's air filter box.

On the oil pump ther are 3 large straight blade screw caps two on the oil pump and one on the engine block the two on the oil pump. One is a check out the other is a valve check valve under that screw is a spring and a ball if the spring is broke or weak it will allow oil to flow out of the tank into the sump. Is happening to you you might want to check out the check valve and see if that may be the problem of the leaking back to the sump for the video. This is a great video. It happened to me and your video has helped great job.

Thanks for checking out the video! That style of oil pump I believe is only on the Evo engines, on the twin cams the oil pump is inside the cam chest behind the cam plate.

2000 fat boy, Mine started draining down 4years ago. Should I drain oil then pour back in? or start like you did? Will it damage the rings or walls running with no oil in the tank to begin with? Seems like a lot of time running before oil gets through engine. Thank you.
@fwgarage2351
@fwgarage2351 4 ай бұрын
If you haven’t started it in a few years, you can put a little oil in the tank to pump into the engine on start up however be careful because all of the oil wet sumped in the engine could begin to overfill the oil bag quickly and it will spew out of the fill hole on the oil bag. It is hard to drain out of the engine cases because there is no dedicated drain plug on the engine case.

What year and model? The crankcase may have got wet dumped and filled up to the crankcase vent so pressure on first start up pushed some oil out of the vent. Was it continuous after starting or did it stop after a bit?

92 Harley-Davidson softail heritage classic. It puked out a little puddle then it stopped . I ran it for a couple of minutes and then shut it down after that cause I didn't want to mess anything up just in case it was something serious
@fwgarage2351
@fwgarage2351 Жыл бұрын
If it just m puked some out and then stopped you are probably good, sounds like it was wet sumped and the crankcase was full up I first start up and then started circulating normally.

@@fwgarage2351 During the winter, all the oil from the tank went into the engine. In the spring I replaced it by draining it through a plug in the crankcase. Filled with fresh oil. Everything seems to be working as it should. But it is worth turning off the engine - the oil slowly leaves the tank.
@fwgarage2351

@@Ivan_Bubnov I am wondering if it created a weird vacuum or suction back towards the crankcase pulling the oil backwards in the system. Where was the plug you used in the crankcase to drain it?

@@fwgarage2351 By the way... It seems that the problem went away as soon as the motor began to run regularly...) And the 1/4 hex plug is on the right side at the bottom of the engine crankcase. I can send a photo to whatsapp or facebook

@fwgarage2351 Жыл бұрын
Awesome man! Running the engine regularly can balance the crankcase pressure back out after sitting for a long period of time. Mine always acts a little wonky and then smooths out after I get back to riding it regularly in the spring.

So that frothy color is normal?
@fwgarage2351
@fwgarage2351 2 ай бұрын
Yes, because as the bike sits over winter moisture will develop and make it look frothy when it first runs, after riding and bringing it up to operating temperature it will evaporate and go away.

@@fwgarage2351 my mechanic says change it again even though I didn't ride much but after all that winter the oil loses quality or some shit..
@fwgarage2351
@fwgarage2351 2 жыл бұрын
I have never experienced this unless a bike sat for years in which case I would always change all of the fluids, over a winter it will gain some moisture with the outside temperature fluctuations especially here in Alaska. Usually it will evaporate after running it up to temp for the first ride. Short start ups could be harmful if the moisture does not fully evaporate. Again this is just my experience and I definitely don't know everything or am a subject matter expert. It may cause damage at a molecular level but that shit is way above my head haha.
