In " Is my husband going to leave me? I GOT FAT! | Weight Loss Journey | Losing 200 lbs" I answer one of the most common questions people ask me about... Will my husband leave me because I gained weight? Do I worry that my husband will leave me because I gained weight. This was a very hard question to tackle. I would be lying if I said that thought never ever ran through my mind, but I have never entertained it. Because it isn't true, in my case. However, so may people deal with this situation, especially women. And, it happens for all sorts of reasons. So, I felt it was worth talking a little about. I hope it helps.

My husband abandoned me, claiming he didn’t love me anymore. I asked him if it was because I was overweight and he didn’t answer. I’ve always been active and fit but at that time was 40 lbs overweight. This is a real thing to be concerned about. It hurt for a long time to not feel worth love. He has since had a half dozen girlfriends, the latest being the same age as our oldest son, and I don’t think he’s found happiness yet. I’m currently the healthiest, fittest, and happiest I’ve ever been. We need to take care of ourselves, not because we need men to love us, but because we need to love ourselves.

Actually a lot of people asked because of their own battles. I personally asked because I have sabotaged past relationships because of not having the self-esteem and mental strength to get over my insecurities around weight. I wanted to know how a confident woman learns to ignore the inner saboteur and turn things positive. And yes, I'm in counseling. When you're looking for the tools to a better life it's worth asking the hard questions.

I agree with you and I also think that because she is sharing her journey (in her case weigh loss) some people mistake that she is sharing her whole life. And that It's ok to poke their noses on other's lives and It's ok to ask this kind of question and expectat that person must be ok with it because they are sharing a small part of their lives with others. People get brave behind a screen. People get bold because they are not face to face. People get prepotent because they get to know a small part of one's life and think that they have the right to tell what is right or what's not (and only considering that they are right and who don't share the same point of view is wrong - by the way I believe that each person has the right to think different but we should respect each others beliefs). That doesn't mean that this person who is sharing part of their lives doesn't have feelings and/ or doesn't care that they would like to keep some aspects of their lives private. People should respect more and have more empathy. Because it's so easy to point finger and analyse other's lives but many don't want to look into their own.

This is a topic I look back on and it causes me grief. My wife died after an operation and although weight was not listed as a cause it was listed on the death certificate as being morbidly obese. I loved my wife and the weight she gained during our marriage never affected our marriage. I wish I had made a bigger deal about it because I feel like if I had she would still be here.It could be that we wouldn't be together because she was very sensitive about that subject but at least she still might be here. That's my only issue with weight. It can wreak havoc on one's health. Keep up the good work. Whether you know it or not you are a positive role model.

I agree with you in that we all change over 20 years. I am 42 and not the same person I was 20 years ago. That said a 200 lb weight gain is a big deal-especially when you are still young. I am very happy for April Lauren that her husband is a good guy. She has an amazing personality and is a really great person. But 200 lbs even for an amazing person is a very big deal and can impact physical attraction. I see it as a for sickness and health thing-you don’t want to go through illness with your partner, you don’t want them to gain 200 lbs either. But commitment means you do what you can to work though and with those issues.

April, my wife had stayed with me, having married me at 195 and stayed with me when I went up to 287 as of June 1st. We both made our vows, and have stuck with them. We've been on a journey of healthy living since June 1st and as of my last weigh in, I'm down to 249. Long ways to go still, but she's been with me the whole way. My advice to anyone out there: 1. Be the kind of person you want to be married to. 2. Don't rush into marriage. Find the right person. Marriage is hard. That's why people make vows at the beginning of it. Be and find the kind of person that sticks to their vows.

I've lost weight because of his support, not criticism. Your video is so so kind. Your response is beautiful and thoughtful. Why? It's a very common insecurity for both men and women. With love and respect also comes honesty. If you really love and respect you're partner you will be honest enough to address a major change in their life. Usually that change will come with emotional baggage whether it's weight loss or weight gain.

It's an awkward question to ask. To ask someone to speak on behalf of their partner's decision why they haven't caused devastation in ending the marriage. It causes twisted thinking. At best- a personal conversation is had that's *not your business* It's blunt and tone deaf but could be answered.

“Smooth seas do not make for skillful sailors.” So true in every context. My husband and I have been through some shit together. I asked him recently how he felt about everything we’ve experienced and he told me that he feels closer to me, and even more attracted to me than before. I honestly feared that he held some kind of resentment, so I’m glad I finally just asked. You are absolutely right to say that you just need to have that conversation (regardless of the “issue”). Even if the answer isn’t totally positive, at least you know where you stand. It’s easier to improve something when you know what the issues are.

meesa magill That’s what I meant by the answer not being positive but still a good thing to have the conversation. But yes, definitely be prepared for that outcome because responding with anger or hurt can slam that door shut and your partner won’t be willing to be truthful in the future. Speaking from experience, and it’s a long road to reopen those pathways.

Growing up my mom told me never to be seen without makeup.and that meant I was supposed to get up early and put on makeup before my husband got up. Then I met my husband and he didn't notice whether I wore makeup or not. He noticed if I got fixed up and would flirt snd put the moves on me but he did that when I wore sweats and one of his shirts, too. Fast forward 27 years and 5 kids later and he still is the same. My mother meant well. She wanted me to have a good marriage. She never had that. But it wasn't about makeup, it was about WHO I married. My husband is faithful and devoted because of his character. All the makeup and botox and starvation and whatever else that so many celebrities have used hasn't stopped their faithless spouses from cheating and leaving them. My husband has loved me through it all including weight going up and now 50 lbs down over the past year and a half. In fact. Our love has grown and gotten deeper.

When I started dating my partner I was 11 lbs overweight- but when we'd first met before that, I was about 50 lbs overweight. I just thought he was way out of my league, cutest guy I'd ever met, he was a professional athlete previously. I got the courage to make a move after I'd lost the rough 40 lbs- but he told me that he always thought I was beautiful. Meanwhile, other guys kept me as a "friend" and then when I lost the weight, suddenly were upset that I was in a relationship with someone else. Like your partner is gonna love you and think you're beautiful no matter what. People who are after you for superficial value would never make it with you in the long run, because partnerships are picking each other up no matter what life throws at you. To them- he's a winner *now*. My baby is my baby because he felt like he was a winner always.

It is a promise you make to someone and your children. People are not furniture that you replace when they go out of style. It’s hard work and love and God will help you through the hard times.💕

My first husband cited my weight gain (28 lbs) in my divorce petition. I was pleased (eventually!!) that he left. I TRULY sympathise with anyone going thru this & I honestly think you're very very wise for one so young. No one is ever perfect but I think you're pretty close whatever your size. Just one step & one day at a time. (I remarried & my hubby loves me whatever)

You’re such a strong person for turning this into a video and actually answering it with a smile on your face. I plumped you at 216 on a 5’2” frame when I got pregnant with my youngest. My husband was deployed for four months of it and I ate my friggin feelings. I think when you marry the right person you don’t have these kinds of fears. He has always been and continues to be my biggest fan and supporter from my weight loss (I’m down to 158 and still going!) to my jump into nursing school.

I just love you. The part about getting counseling and not projecting your own feelings of body shame onto your loved ones- that is SO, SO important. I've been guilty of that, and it's the last thing I want to do, especially to my daughter. Yes, getting into counseling does help us to stay mindful of things like these and deal with them in mentally healthier ways. You also addressed the difference between real love and emotional abuse very well. I also appreciate that you include people who don't share your religious beliefs. You're a real one. Thank you.

I LOVED this video. Additionally, verything you said about if you are unhappy with your weight or your life and you project it on your spouse you will push them away, was absolutely congruent with my experience with a past relationship. These videos you're making matter so much because all of them are shining light on the dark, difficult pieces everyone goes through at least a few times. And when no one is willing to openly talk about them, we feel like we can't talk about them either, and things stay hidden and dark and damaging. Thank you for doing all these videos.

Marriage is through the ups & downs. Sometimes that means weight gain or even weight loss. But when someone falls in love with YOU, the initial attraction isn’t the most beautiful thing about you anymore. I think a lot of women have the question “will my boyfriend/husband leave if...” and although I think it’s wrong that people asked you this, this video could help so many women 💕 I have so much respect for you April.

I think you tackled this beautifully. With that being said, let’s not gloss over the fact that men do in fact leave their wives due to weight gain. I was very thin when I got married at age 22. I am 56 and definitely not tiny anymore. I know my husband is not happy about it, but it is what it is. I love your positive attitude.

My husband has seen me within a 100lb spread from my lowest to my heaviest, and all the points in between. He has never commented on my size, and the scale was never a determining factor in his love for me or if was going to stay with me. Your value as a person and what makes you you goes far beyond the number on the scale. If someone leaves you because you gained weight, it is a reflection of them and not you. Beautiful video, April! You handle difficult conversations with such grace and your perspectives on life are so grounded, real, and rational.

I feel you so much. I gained a significant amount of weight due to medical issues and my husband loved me regardless, he wasn't attracted the way he used to but he did love me. We went to counselling and things have never been stronger. I've since lost the weight and I can tell now that he has never loved me differently. From thin to fat to thin again. He loves me totally because I was his choice and he is mine.

You are always so careful about the way you word things. I can see the wheels turning in your head all the time on how to word things in the most productive way. I appreciate that so much and you’re such an example to me that you can talk about hard topics without offending anyone. If your spouse truly loves you, weight gain alone shouldn’t cause them to leave you. It might be “inconvenient” and they might not be as physically attracted to you, but that’s not necessarily their fault or yours! I think it’s what comes with weight gain that could become a problem. Like depression, or self hatred, or projecting your unhappiness on to them, etc. That’s when you become a different person on the inside than what they married. Anyway, April this was a great video filled with many great incites about marriage even for people who aren’t struggling with weight gain specifically. Thank you so much.

Communication and honesty is so important. I’ve been with my husband for almost four years, and that has always helped us so much. I grew up with parents who let secrets and doubts burn inside of them forever, ruining their relationship, and I swore I would never do that. Any insecurity I am feeling goes straight into a conversation with him. If I’m unintentionally mean, I look inside myself to find out why, and then go to him to apologize and tell him why. The honesty in this video is beautiful, and you’re beautiful. I appreciate you so much on this platform. 🙂
