For as long as I've been alive, soft ground football boots have always had removable and interchangeable metal studs. That's been the standard across all brands, and it just works. Having the option to interchange or replace the metal studs, depending on the circumstances, in my opinion is a very good thing. Well, Nike doesn't think so. At least not anymore.
In today's video we take a closer look at the new Blueprint pack Nike Tiempo Legend 9 Elite, with the Anti-Clog SG-Pro stud pattern. At a quick glance, nothing about looks abnormal. But, look a little closer, and you'll see that the metal tipped studs are fixed in place and molded to the boots, basically like an FG stud pattern. Why have they done this? Well, we discuss the pros and cons of this tech, and try to decide whether or not this is Nike pushing the boundaries of performance, or them cheating us out of options as consumers. What do you think?

That colourway is dope. Probably my favorite Tiempo colourway (if not across all models) in a long time. The red is similar to the Legend III red but the torquise accents elevate it further. I have just bought these in the FG version

Studs get replaced because people don’t tighten them up enough and they loose them in games. In terms of wear and tear if you don’t do the 1 mile walk to the pitch along the concrete path then the grass pitch won’t wear your studs. To me it makes sense to change it and save some weight.

Counter argument, aftermarket brands also now offer screw in rubber studs, so rather than needing FG boots and SG boots for dry/wet pitches. I can just buy 1 pair of SG and change to rubbers when/if needed. The route nikes going down now, I'm going to have to purchase 2 pairs of boots if I want to wear the newest models?

Living in the midwest, and playing in mostly dry seasons, I've never really had the need to use SGs. A few years ago a buddy of mine that worked at adidas sent me a sample version of adidas adiPower (which were different than the released versions) and I absolutely love them. I only used them like 5 times but it does make a difference on wet grass.

I play rugby and for the most part I've only ever played in soft ground boots, I don't often need to change to the longer studs but like knowing it's an option if the field is drenched and I need more traction. In saying that I stopped wearing Nike a few years ago, I loved mercurials but they don't hold up when you're getting stepped on all game

definitely feel like Nike’s cheating their customer base out of options. They still make non Anti Clog, SG pro versions of boots that are only really available to pros or can be found through boot reselling websites. This SG pro soleplate seems to be the go to choice for most pros because the soleplate is a lot lighter and has interchangeable studs.

@@monkfish3099 probably not much, if any at all. You need friction to wear something down, especially something as tough as alloys. So the truth is, these studs would probably outlast the shoes themselves, as long as people don’t use it to go grocery shopping, running on asphalt, skateboarding, sand the like. 😅 And here’s another thing to think about: a lot of people, if not the vast majority aren’t trained to screw things. They don’t know that you can ruin the screw hole forever if you strip a screw. What people usually do is just go as tight as they possibly can, and a lot of things don’t take much force to strip a screw. So think about how many people ruin their shoes for good because of their lack of training. Then that would cost them another $200 or more to replace those shoes. If you take that part away you’re actually doing everyone a favor.

I personally bought the Tiempo 8 sg for the exact reason that the 9‘ don’t come with the option to replace the studs. After about one season of only using the 8‘ on match days played on sg I’ve found that the boots where still in exzellent shape but that sg studs need urgent replacement. All in all what Nike have done here is not fair to the customers who may need the replacement option.

Hey Josh 😊 I think JayMike explained in his video on these a while back that the stud tips are a different metal (stainless steel?) so they would wear down a lot less. Personally as someone who plays in the UK, i do sometimes get a to a point where it’s worth replacing the studs before the boots wear out in standard SG layouts. Thanks for the vid 😄

Actually most stainless steels are softer than normal (higher carbon content steels) Their advantage is that they are less prone to rust. They are more prone to wear, so lets hope they arent stainless or Nike really is doing a number on us to get us to change boots more often.

Honestly I don’t even get why they use metal for sg studs it the first place, I’d rather have a lighter weight full plastic sole plate with longer, more aggressive studs for sg. No other boots have replaceable studs so I don’t see it as a big deal for wear and tear. When I’m buying a top end boot I want it for the best performance possible so it doesn’t make sense to me to make it heavier than necessary. Especially considering sg soleplate are usually shaped slightly different than fg variations to accommodate the screw in studs, makes them feel different which I personally find annoying for the sake of continuity when switching from fg to ag to sg boots. Fg and ag boots usually feel similar but I’ve only ever had one pair of sg boots I actually liked the feel of compared to the fg version

The Tiempo 9 Academy SG still has the "older" Anti Clog sole with replacable studs. Taking into consideration that I would use an SG boot only on a few occasions per year and It is kind of an special tool, it would be a much more reasonable deal to me. Unfortunately, they don't seem to include the 13/15mm replacement studs and the one's fitted arent full metal either. What I additionally like is the tounge of the Academy boot, since it should be much easier cleanable. I wouldn't anyway feel to bad about them getting really dirty as I would with an expensive Elite model

I’ve never had to change studs because they’re too worn down. The issue is that the studs go missing while playing. I’ve never gotten rid of a FG boot due to studs wearing down, usually the upper tears or cokes away from the sole plate. So with SG boots having metal studs they won’t wear down any quicker than FG boots. So for me is a bit more convenient because they won’t come out mid game

Tbh I thought only rugby players put the longer studs in their boots? As someone who plays in the UK my SG boots last about 3 seasons anyway as they're only worn from November- Feb and only for match days not training so only get about 12-15 games a year usage. Go straight bacn to FG as soon as possible as theyre more comfortable. This will make no difference to most players as long as they arent doing massive walks to the pitch in the studs 😂

I wear SG boots for around 80% of my season. I think the new unremovable studs is not ideal and it definitely puts me off buying Nike sg boots. I like to change the length of my studs depending on how soft the ground is as when it’s really soft I’ll typically use 15mm studs in the forefoot and rear to get that extra bite. If it’s not nearly as soft I’ll go with 11 and 13mm. This season I’ve been using X19.1s as I really didn’t like the route Nike have gone down despite wanting to buy a pair of Nike SGs but I’ve managed to get a pair of superflys 7s with the custom SG pro layout so that’s what I’ll do from now on if I want a specific Nike SG boot, I’ll just buy them from and independent reseller who can get the SG pro layout👍
