It's driveaway. Delivering commercial vehicles or in the case of RV Transport, delivering RV's. Some say it's a poor time to get into the business. I was making the case why this is the perfect time to start. Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it.

@@DrivingWithDon Never heard of this. Is this just towables or motorhomes too? If motorhomes, how do you get home? Drive it somewhere to deliver it and then what... fly back?

@@piquat1 It is kinda like that. But it's just about any kind of vehicles you can imagine. From cars to Semis to those ginormous multi axle cranes. You act as an Independent contractor. You can lease on to as many driveaway companies as you like. Most will have a load board with the vehicles they need moved. Most will pay you a cent-per-mile rate and some will give you money for fuel, some won't. Each company is different in how they pay their independent contractors. As for getting home, as an Independent Contractor, that is up to you. Some people use public transportation like buses, airplanes, etc. Others like myself tow a small car behind the units we're delivering. Not only will it save in transportation costs, once you unhook you're free to go to the next unit or do whatever you'd like.

@@piquat1 Also, look up Horizon Transport Driveaway here on KZfaq, they are a driveaway company that moves a lot of motorhomes and utility trucks.

In a nutshell, you have two options when between loads after unhooking your current load. Just remember, you either need to be in the same city as your next pickup at least 10 hours before picking it up or you must log that drive time in your personal vehicle as "On Duty Not Driving". You can only log "Driving" when you're in a commercial vehicle. So, let's say you drop in San Antonio and your next pickup is in Dallas. You get to Dallas in 4 hours and get a room for the night. You spend at least 10 hours there before pickup. So your clock can start in Dallas. But let's say you dropped in SA, drive the 4 hours to Dallas and go directly to your next load. Then the 4 hours drive time is supposed to be logged as "On Duty" (because you're headed directly to another load). I'm sure that is clear as mud, but I do have a video on that subject in the works.

@@DrivingWithDon Thanks for response. Let me give you a specific example. I live in City A but pick up in City B 2.5 hours away. I have been off and at home a week in city A. If I go to pick up a truck in City B to Drive somewhere that is more than 1 day away and I want to get my full 11 hour and 14 hour clock to start my trip do I have to make the 2.5 hour drive over to City B the night before to get 10 hours off in City B or can I drive over the morning of and then start my 14 hour day after arriving? If I have to acknowledge the drive over how do I show that on log? Off Duty with a note stating driving to City B?

@@Grandpa_RLP if you wanted to save your clock so it would start at City B, you'd have to be in City B 10 hours before you started your pretrip. This is something I weigh when I'm looking at picking up in Denton from my house. It's a 5 hour drive. I have went and got a room at Sanger (about 30-45 minutes away from Denton) and I have left my house early and counted the 5 hours as "On Duty". Personally, I'd eat that 2.5 hour drive if I wanted to leave from the house and just count it as "On Duty".

@@Grandpa_RLP Not a problem Grandpa. The way I see it is, if you have a question, then there's probably others with the question as well, I'm always happy to try and help! As for driving over the night before, I would just log it off duty with a "remark" when I arrived at the motel. What I try and do is paint a picture for any DOT officer inspecting my log books. I want them to be able to look at the log book and tell exactly where I've been and whether or not I've been driving a CMV. When I do this (stay the night in the city I'm picking up) I always make sure I have a receipt of some sorts showing I was actually there when I said I was. I personally do not think it needs to be a motel receipt (although that would probably be best) but I'd have no problem showing them a receipt from Dollar Tree just to prove I was in that city when my logbook said I was.

Sounds like you have a plan. Just remember, it's okay to change plans if you need too! If I were to pull RV's, I would definitely get a used pickup rather than buying new. I know the pros and cons, but my numbers always said a paid off truck put me money ahead of owning a new one!

@DrivingWithDon Thank you for the reply! I'm not sure if companies care about the age of tow vehicle or not. If it were up to me, I'd go even cheaper and buy a Ford f350 drw with the 7.3l engine in great shape and only spend 20 to 25k.
