I think folks are just confused on overlanding, camping, off-roading, rock climbing, and all the other things. The very definition to overland is just travel a long distance over land. Anything else, is extra. Camping is camping, offroading is offroading, ect. I see overlanding the car version of hiking. I just think folks are realizing tents and crazy gear isn't required to overland, nothing is stopping someone exploring remote places for 100-200 miles and then finding a hotel. It's what you make it, who cares what others believe it is. It's your adventure, not theirs.
@quicksendtaco
@quicksendtaco Ай бұрын
And most of us don't usually travel very far distances unless you include the highway miles to get to the locations haha The flip side also yeah you don't need half of the stuff but the manufactures aren't slowing on progress or cost. Basically pricing people out of it even if you wanted to.

For many folks who buy the 10k tent and stuff, they are just camping for 2-3 nights. To me, overlanding is camping for a week or more. Baja comes to mind. The Yukon comes to mind.

Overland is just camping. 😂 Driving around with a tent on your truck and gear 365 days a year is not practical. Don’t need crazy suspension to go camping offroad 1-2 weeks a year. Its about getting out and doing what you enjoy. Some products just make that more enjoyable. When camping in the back country most people pack or buy there fears.

@@quicksendtacoAs a backpacker and camper, that’s a terrible suggestion hahaha, backpacking isn’t an entry level hobby for most people. Even a cheap backpacking setup is thousands, thousands more if you want light/ultralight gear to be under 35-30 pounds total. It’s worth it for those that live for outdoors, and for folks like me who also use my backpacking gear for vehicle based camping since it’s all compact. Cheapest way to get outside is save up a few hundred bucks, and go to Walmart. Coleman or Teton sports gear for everything if you don’t even know if you are a ‘camping person’. Also, most camping people aren’t seasoned enough to take it that step further (hehe) and be all alone in the mountains with the coyotes and no eco flow fridge in the back with IPA’s and steak dinners.

It's another Gimmick for the same game........."Camping " People are fundamentally "Sheeple ", they'll follow whoever for whatever. Funny thing about the "Overland " People is, once they Visit a KOH off-road event, the ideas start slipping towards the "Pre-Lander" phase of off-roading. That's why suspension parts are so hard to get these days. It's all mid-travel to long-travel shocks and related components now. Desert Camping and PreRunners, Winter through Summer ☀️
@quicksendtaco
@quicksendtaco Ай бұрын
Haha oh yeah KOH and "Overlanding" are very VERY different. KOH will make you feel very small. But that's what I mean you don't even really need new suspension but for me I like to tinker and modify things. Comes down to want vs need within your means.

I suspect you are correct about passing "peak interest" in overlanding, but there are many positives that came out of it. Gear progressed, KZfaq channels created, companies produced innovative products. Some of that will naturally fall by the wayside as popularity reaches a more normal level. I don't criticize folks when they have an all rigged out overland truck, that obviously never goes off road. If that truck puts a big smile on their face every time they climb onboard, then good for them. 🙂

Lol so I've been told. They do look good but I go down so many trails with Jeeps and Toyotas on 35s - 37s and I can do exactly everything they do. So it's honestly just for looks you don't gain much more clearance between a 34 and a 35. That said they are definitely sick asf haha

My particular truck is built as an "adventure truck" and is outfitted to support my abandoned mine exploring and KZfaq filming. It's a diesel SuperDuty with a shell on the back. Folks often comment about the desert striping, but that is inevitable with the places I go. I did build a bunk in back so I can camp on-site. Next, I would like to add an awning since I live in the desert and shade is always welcome. I tend to be quite pragmatic about adding parts to the truck. I add what I find I need and try not to spend too much money on eye-candy. LOL.

You can use portals on your daily no problem. The biggest problem is the cost of portals. I don't think you should build an overland rig if you're going camping a couple of times a year. That's a lot of weight to carry every day so you're just burning gas.
@quicksendtaco
@quicksendtaco Ай бұрын
@@bostonbob0007 Yeah I don’t want my rig to not fit in a normal parking spot. I think portals widen the track width for sure. Either way it’s not something I plan on. I like my mpg too much like you said haha

Let companies try and sell their products---it's your job as a consumer not to fall for it or to whatever peer pressure. You do you. You be you...and forget anything else. I just like to go camp and travel in my lifted 4Runner. Don’t really ‘identify’ as part of the ‘over-landing’ community, since I spend just as much time sleeping in parking lots as I do in the forest. Also why a RTT just wouldn’t work for me.

Yeah I've realized many times I cant use my RTT in Planet Fitness or Walmart lots. It's generally a really fun community even if you did dabble just with the Toyota guys and girls. Not necessarily for the overlanding aspect.

If you care for the instagram trends and what other people say then it’s been dead for quite some time. If you don’t then it’s more alive than ever since there are more companies providing a lot of offer and innovation towards designs and therefore competitive prices. Don’t fall for the BS. You do you, and fuck what the others are saying. It’s all about the journey. Live and let die. If you don’t like which way some other people are going just part ways.

As with anything else, it's paralysis by analysis. Thousands of channels, thousands of opinions, thousands of gear lists. Constantly comparing yourself to the 1% that are insta famous with stuff you'll never have. On top of that, 90% of it is sponsored content and one giant commercial. "Hey guys check out this potato chip bag clip that has totally redefined my car camping." Get out of here with that crap. Get off social media, learn things for yourself, figure out what you need.

@@quicksendtaco Heck yeah, and that's a great idea. Not every "must have" gear list suits everybody. Why buy all that stuff if you don't know what you'll want to do, where you'll want to go, or for how long. What if your destinations are down gravel roads? A Toyota Corolla can drive on gravel.
