Is peanut butter bad for you? The answer is yes and no. It depends on how much you consume, the variety of nut you’re eating, and what the rest of your diet looks like.
To put it simply, peanut butter can be harmful because peanuts are high in omega-6 fats, which causes inflammation. We do not consume enough omega-3 fats, which reduce inflammation. Secondly, peanuts are grown on the ground and can develop mold, which can be a factor in a lot of kid’s allergy developments today.
If you want to eat your peanut butter and still be healthy, here are some tips. When you’re buying peanuts, make sure you’re buying a certified organic brand, usually Valencia or Jungle peanuts, which are grown on bushes higher up from the ground, avoiding mold. Additionally, adding flax seed oil or fish oil supplements to your diet to increase your level of omega-3 fats is important. Consuming peanut butter can be part of a healthy diet if you’re consuming it with the right type of foods. Peanuts are one of the highest forms of plant-based proteins available today, as well. So, if you buy organic, jungle peanuts and you’re consuming a lot of omega-3 fats in your diet, then it can be healthy to consume peanut butter.
However, the biggest problem with peanut butter today is that 99% of peanut butters contain hydrogenated oils, are non-organic, and people are consuming too many omega-6 fats. For this reason, peanut butter is not good for you and can cause weight gain and inflammation.

2:30 Valencia peanuts DO NOT grow on bushes higher up off the ground, they to grow in the ground. The difference is Valencia peanuts come mainly from New Mexico where there is a dry arid climate, so the risk of mold drops substantially in Valencia peanuts.

GaminNinja, for clarification: I am referring to natural peanut butter you make yourself or go to a grocery market you can make peanut butter from their nut butter machines. The only organic foods I trust come from my local farmer, with which I have a close relationship for years now...as I stated previously in my other post most organic foods or products sold commercially are bullshit, marketing garbage, bottom line.

Interestingly regarding weight gain: peanut butter paste is used as a first supplement when people are starved. It's very important in the fight against starvation. I agree tho peanut butter often has a lot of ingredients a normal person doesn't need e.g. sugar etc.

Comparing your clip, Doc, with another Doc's on peanuts, I find yours balanced and informative without being unduly frightening. Orchids for your peanuts! I buy roasted, non-salted peanuts in a 16oz jar, at my market for less than $3.00. Also, I buy peanut butter, ground in the specialty food store where I sometimes shop. Their product is $3.00/lb. They do not add any oils at all; no trans-fat worries. I add a tablespoon of peanuts to my oatmeal in the AM, and often eat the butter on a slice of wheat bread. I never experience any ill effects.

I'm well aware of the TLDR nature of this post, but I'm going to share. The only real problem I see with this advice is the idea that you're going to get bioavailable omega-3s from plant foods at all. Although there is currently some research being done on specific species of algae that can produce both DHA and EPA omega-3s, other plant foods have omega-3s in the form of alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA. For whatever reason, despite its terribly low bioavailability, the USDA still lists ALA as an "essential fat". ALA cannot be directly used anywhere in your body (as DHA and EPA are used primarily in the nervous system), and require special enzymes to convert them to their bioavailable form. Unfortunately the rate of conversion is extremely low; about 1g in 20g of ALA is effectively converted to DHA for use by the body, so even if you pour cups of flax seeds on everything you eat, you're not getting the benefits that you would from a 6oz can of sardines.

Just some thoughts...

I crave peanut butter. I have binged on it many times. Slathering it on bananas, apples and celery, I have eaten a whole jar in 18 hours. Then I notice my IBS gets worse, and constipation is worse. The bottoms of my feet get rough and cracked. When I stop eating PB, these issues start to disappear significantly in two weeks.

Dr. John Axe please help, I eat healthy food and good shape from weight lifting and most of my nutrition come from like vegetable, general fruits (like banana, apple blueberry etc.). Sunflower, linseed, chia seed, hemp seed, almonds and maize flour (to make healthy cake without sugar) oil for cooking (coconut oil and sometimes olive oil), egg as usually and a glass kefir, fish like tuna salmon and Cod fish. Therefore, do I have to worry if I take a or two serving of peanut butter a day to smear on my bread and my peanut butter has 9 gram of saturated fat, 23 gram of monounsaturated, and 17 gram of polyunsaturated

What about the powdered peanut butter (like naked brand, pb2, etc)? Are these safe in terms of aflatoxin?

Veggie Bee No, and way over-priced! They can then profit twice from selling the oil and the fat-removed solids, which probably used to be diverted to livestock feeds, before marketing it to thin $$$ people, who will pay an arm and leg!

Question: Why is peanut allergy almost unheard of in some countries (like here in the Philippines)? I have never heard of peanut allergy in my country in the 48 years I have lived and we are heavy consumers of peanut. We use peanut for main dishes, snacks, spreads, and they are a popular street food.
@MichaelDeLaRosa

Probably because the peanuts there are grown organically

Idk man. I live in NCR and I have a classmate who got allergies after eating ice cream with peanuts in it. Plus I was asked if anyone had a peanut allergy in a restaurant just recently.

I truly think it has alot to do with the overall garbage diet America has. Like 80% of food is gmo, highly processed, toxic, inflammatory garbage.

I’m 74 and grew up on a farm in eastern North Carolina USA and ate a lot of peanut butter as did everyone I knew. Nobody had allergies to peanuts and I never heard of that until the last thirty years or so. Don’t know what changed but I think there were some recommendations from pediatricians to avoid peanuts for infants. Now I read that that is changing.

I have a habit of adding peanut butter to protein shakes, is normal peanut butter ok for this if balanced out properly? It's hard for me to afford some healthier items such as the natural peanut butters, and things like that.

But what if I often consume fish and cod liver oil? Peanut butter can be beneficial (and nuts) if your omega 6 and 9s are balanced. It should be 100% natural though and not like well known brands with added sugar and hydrogenated oils.

Very interesting. I had no idea that peanut allergies are from the mold on the peanuts and not the peanuts themselves.

This is misinformation. Most severe peanut allergies arise from the peanut protein, not from the mold.

If only I could add a bit of natural peanut butter to my diet but the minute I buy a jar there is no peace in my bones until I don t eat all straight then and this happens absolutely every time such an easy food to binge on and so many people have this problem withe the peanut butter. Its really true that is why I never buy it no more to avoid a massive binge and then regret it or worse.
