In my opinion you are spot on regarding renting or leasing. I have specific clients I run for and have my own company and authority. I go nationwide picking up and delivering. I wouldn't get into a lease in my case since I have a low top cargo van I own outright and use 90% of the time. On occasion I get taller items. I used to put them in my trailer,, hook up and make the delivery, bada bing no problem right? Nah, recently I was enlightened by a DOT officer that my combined weight ratio required me to have a ELD in my vehicle when I tow. I don't want an ELD anywhere around my van or me. Because of the infrequent occasions I need to tow it's not worth the subscription or hassle of an ELD. But it is also not worth the fines if I get cited for towing and not being in compliance. The decision I made was to set up a commercial account with a rental company to get a small discount on a high roof van when I need one and $h1t can using the trailer. I tell the rental company the amount of time I need the van and that's what I pay for, no more and sometimes less. I don't deal with pallets so the longest and tallest really isn't fo me, for what I carry the vans available for rent are fine for my use. If you do rent be prepared to rig up a tie down system that doesn't infringe of the van's body, I'm still trying to perfect how to do it. When or if things settle down with the high top van game I will get one to replace my Chevy, but not another diesel. The emission crap is a nightmare when they go wrong. Until then I think this is best for my situation. Like what was mentioned in the video know what your needs are before deciding on anything. Love your channel since I'm just about a year into this. Great information, some of it applies some of it doesn't. I put what applies in my l notebook to use, the other stuff I chalk up to having learned something new and move on. Keep up the great work.

The van I took on is down again for the second time. Took it to a shop to have work done and they screwed it up. They popped the right from cv axle and low and behold the whole axle is on back order. Finding parts for a promaster is getting to the point of being impossible.

In 1985 when I started, and still going, I called Ryder about renting an Econoline van just before I signed my lease with the carrier. First he told me they had a maintenance schedule that had to be followed where I would have to go out of service to replace parts whether they broke or not. Then they gave me a limit of the amount of miles I could put on, then after that limit they would charge me by the mile (the numbers I don't remember) What I do remember is the leasing of a van was triple what a new van would cost (triple every year!). It was much cheaper to buy a brand new Ford van and maintain it myself. Renting forget it, that's even more expensive! Renting from just a nobody individual- NEVER DO IT! You think an individual will keep up the repairs without charging you less than a Ryder, or Penske? NO WAY. Reality is you have to buy a van, and at todays van prices, and prices of fuel and repairs, you will to work your ass off to make a decent profit. There's very high turn over for the expediting business. I've met people in our fleet, and more often than not, they pay off their van or sell it, and they move on within 5 years.

@@interstategar people say those ecoline are some good vans. I remember having a gmc safari and literally having to remove the bottom part of the dash to get to the engine. @@danniecurlett8702 I know someone who has a 2019 Transit. He needed an O2 sensor replaced and had to take it too the dealer because it buried. In my 2012 Econoline, its very easy to access. I just remove the engine cover and the 2 front O2 sensors are right there. Just unplug, and loosen the sensor with my O2 wrench which is a 7/8 with a slot to fit over the top of the sensor.

If you know the numbers and believe you'll be profitable, then roll with it if you're ok with the numbers. If not, the option is hold off getting in the industry and focus on fixing the things that are preventing you. In my opinion I suggest driving for a fleet owner to gain experience, create documented income, work on your credit, etc.

@EverythingApax
@EverythingApax Жыл бұрын
Find out how you plan to work your van. Meaning, will you sign on with a carrier and run under their authority in which they find you loads? Will you get your authority and work off of apps and websites? Will you get your authority and bid loads off of a load board? There are many different ways to make money in a cargo van, so you at least have to start off by researching the various options.
