I too am 74 years old (1946) the first year of those considered baby boomers! I started riding a bike when I was 4 years old and have never stopped. When I turned 65, I sadly realized that my ability to ride the distances and mountain roads where I live had diminished to the point that my rides were limited to just a few miles from my house. The 50 mile rides that I had taken when I was a young man were just not possible any longer. I decided to buy a moped, well that was no fun at all. That was the point that I bought the first of 3 E-bikes that I have owned. The technology is advancing so fast that each of my bikes has been a magnitude better than the previous one. I can ride my 750w bike on a greenway trail to a nearby town. The trail includes a 1000 ft. decent and a 1000 ft. ascent on a 22 mile trek. I feel like I'm about 16 years old riding my E-bike, like lance Armstrong minus the drugs. I've put about 4000 miles on my current bike and I would give up my cars before the bike.

As a retired State Park Manager and ebike rider, I was glad to comment in support of ebike use in these federal areas. Most park areas are unaware of how many ebikes are being ridden in their areas. Glad to see the Federal Park and Land areas looking into the issue and hopefully they will get overwhelming positive support of ebike access.

I also want folks to be able to go where they want within reason.I would just have park rangers be able to give out tickets to ebike riders if they do dumb stuff--like speed or ride wrecklessly--or go offroad to pristine areas and lay wheels etc.Have it on a fine system like they do snowmobiles and offroad vehicles.I have no problem with the law enforcing this from the start so we do not lose our rights--or the govt gets involved and then these are treated like motorcycles where you need insurance--register etc.I just bought my first one and would also love to goto the trails.I am an ex mountainbiker and you just can not enjoy anything when you are worn out--and at most i never went more then just a VERY FEW miles into any trail because you had to conserve energy to peddle back.I am picking up biking again and plan on peddling to get exercise I need and using the motor when I want to chill and enjoy the scenery.

Thanks, Everyone who owns an e-bike. We need to all band together in support of the use of our bikes the older we get the more we can appreciate the usefulness of an E-Bike physically, mentally with an improved quality of life with access to things and places that are totally out of reach. Unless you go gas.

As the generations age, esp this big Boomer gen, it will be a natural evolution to increasingly accept ebikes as the population will demand it...not just the few. We will see laws get more lenient as time goes on, esp with the Green movement and increasing popularity of ebikes...this is not stopping. That's why I finally decided to buy one this week! It's a great investment too as their cost is only increasing.

Good question. I think their concern is speed. If their concern is speed non assist riders have the ability to speed. So it’s the same difference, the same complaint against e riders. so why discriminate against e riders ?

Kyle, thanks for bringing this to our attention. I have submitted my support. Interesting how all these separate agencies and bureaus can generate this much paperwork versus just one universal rule that could simply define ebikes one time and state that they will be treated the same as regular bikes by the entire federal government. Guess that would be too easy😊

I'm fifty-seven years young, I own an ebike and I also agree that electric bikes should be allowed in National Parks and on public lands, as long as users use common sense, courtesy, follow the rules and the law, stay on designated roads and trails, keep the land clean of your garbage, clean up after yourselves and preserve what's left of our Mother Earth. I have busted knees, as well as spina bifida occulta which causes a lot of pain in my lower back and I could not ride a regular bike anymore, so I bought an electric-assist bike, and it has helped me to stay active and allowed me to at least get SOME exercise and allows me to get out of doors on a regular basis. I have several old injuries from many years ago that have wreaked havoc on my body over the years as I have aged. National Parks and public lands are some of the places where we as taxpaying Americans can get away from each other and get back to nature. I can't walk too well and I certainly can't do any backpacking anymore, so being able to use an electric-assist bike in National Parks and on Public TAXPAYER-FUNDED and OWNED lands is a no-brainer. And technically, electric bikes are actually powered by MOTORS, therefore, factually, they ARE motor vehicles. Motorcycles that use ENGINES are misnamed and have been misnamed for DECADES. Motorcycles really should be called enginecycles, but apparently, someone didn't like that term, so enginecycles were misnamed most likely on purpose. It's either that, or when powered bicycles were first powered, they may very well have been powered by MOTORS and thus the name "motorcycle" was appropriately applied, but then as enginecycles came into popularity, it appears that the original name stuck even though the classification and nomenclature are incorrect.

I’m almost 70. Yesterday, 5-May-22, two Colorado Black Canyon National Park rangers told me I couldn’t ride my Segway. I use it to ride up stream to fly fish. I asked how much the ticket was if I didn’t stop usage and was told $130 with mandatory court appearance which would be within 30 days, I told them to go ahead and write me a ticket because I wanted to contest the law by writing my representatives. They asked if I had any disability? I told them I don’t have any disability that any other 70YO man doesn’t have, maybe a little Arthritis here and there. They then told me to go ahead and use the Segway!!! THEY WOULDNT WRITE ME A TICKET!!!

As a mountain biker (bike commuter, and ebike owner) near lots of well known trails on BLM land, I'm a bit torn on their use in every instance where regular bikes are allowed. I certainly think there are some places they should be allowed, and a blanket ban probably isn't appropriate. I do worry however about straining already stressed trails systems though. As a somewhat related aside, I'd love to see how we as citizens can advocate for better cycling infrastructure nationally and locally. This shutdown has made it obvious to me that way more people would use their bikes if they felt safe to do so, our transportation system is just so biased for vehicles that folks are essentially asked to put their lives at risk to bike somewhere and that can't be the best we can do as a society.

Long comment submitted....... As a new senior, I am now able to enjoy biking again because of pedal assisted E-bikes. The additional exercise is what the doctor ordered. I'm doing 90% of the work. The motor turns on to assist only when a hill is encountered. You can usually find me on a local bike path pedaling at around 7-8 MPH enjoying the sights as mountain bikers and spandex clad racers blow by me at a high rate of speed. On the trails, I encounter many public misconceptions. They tend to think "motorcycle" and after a quick show and tell they now understand it is just a regular bicycle with help on the hills. I believe that the non supporters here really do not understand the concept and function of an E-bike. Please open the trails to us who have supported these resources through tax dollars our entire lives. Looking at the E-bike demographics, Us seniors are by far the #1 owners of E-bikes.

For anyone concerned, this was my comment. I am very much in favor for allowing electric bikes (e-bikes) access to all trails and pathways currently open to traditional bicycle's on all public lands. During the spring and fall months of 2019 I volunteered as a Camphost for the Moab Field Office of the BLM. My wife and I were assigned at the Goose Island Campground located along Hwy 128 approx. 2 miles east of its junction with hwy 191. A section of the Moab Canyon Pathway ran through the Goose Island Campground. This paved pathway allowed bike access to not only Moab City, but to Arches National Park from the campground. One of the reasons individuals wished to camp at the Goose Island Campground was the pathway itself. During the 5 months that I volunteered in the campground, I observed thousands of people using the pathway with traditional bikes, and e-bikes. Many of those I witnessed were camping in the campground. As opportunity would allow, I advised people during the spring of 2019 that e-bikes were not allowed on the pathway and those using the pathway could be subject to citation. My discussions often included me pointing out the sign along the pathway that indicated motorized vehicles were not allowed on the pathway. This was generally met with great surprise from the cyclists. I was constantly told they thought the sign was meant to keep motorcycles off the pathway, not e-bikes. This was generally followed up with a question. Where do they expect us to ride? Alongside the highway? To which I could only shrug my shoulders. In the fall after the Policy Memorandum was issued the pathway itself became a source of many discussions. I was advised at first that the pathway could be used by e-bikes, then I was advised it was not to be used by e-bikes and I was again asked to educate individuals in the campground that if they rode their e-bikes they could be subject to a citation. Again I was often met with surprise, and more often or not, individuals telling me they would rather risk getting a citation for riding on the pathway, than risk injury or death riding along hwy 128 and hwy 191. I was asked how many people I knew of that had received a citation for riding the pathway. My answer was always none; as I never became aware of anyone who was issued a citation. At one point I did contact the Moab City Police Department and asked how many people had been issued a citation for riding on the pathway. I was advised I would need to file a GRAMA request to obtain that information. I did not do so. During the 5 months I volunteered as a host at Goose Island I am only aware of 1 cyclist accident that occurred along the pathway. That cyclist was on a traditional bike, not an e-bike. It occurred in the fall. A female cyclist crashed on her bike near the campground on the pathway. She and her riding companion requested assistance from me and I transported the injured cyclist, her riding companion, and both their bikes (in the back of my truck) to the Moab Regional Hospital. She indicated to me she believed she had broken her arm in the accident. I was never advised to the actual extent of her injuries. I believe the use of e-bikes is very much on the rise. I have personally witnessed many individuals using them. Most of those using e-bikes appear older. We as a society are encouraging individuals to get out and be healthier. The use of an e-bike can help older individuals who may not otherwise get out....do so. I would ask, and encourage the policy makers who are making this determination to allow e-bikes on all trails and pathways on public lands (BLM) that are currently open to traditional bicycles. Thanks you for your consideration of my comments.

I have submitted my comment, favoring the use of ebikes, subject to the same rules as National Parks. At age 79, it would be a big help to be able to ride on federal land with an ebike.

Thanks for making it easy to find the way to put in the official comment on ebikes on BLM land. I had heard this was going on, but not tracked down how to comment. Yes, ebikes (class 1, 2) should be allowed on any land or Trail a bike is currently allowed IMO.

@@takeonemusic5537 in america, other than commuting to work, the average person's use of an automobile is for trips of under 10 miles - ebikes will change that. sorry. i was not more clear on what i meant.

I went and signed the petition, thanks for this information. I believe E-Bikes should be allowed any where a regular bike is allowed. I personally have a leg injury and my e-bike helps me to enjoy getting back out there again. We as e-bikers need to stay up on all the reform around e-bikes so we can make sure our voice is heard in this as well. So again thanks for posting that and bringing awareness to the subject!

Count me in! I put in my 'two-cents' worth on the BLM Comments. I just wish I had more access closer to where I live. TX has less public land that just about any state - it's nearly all private. I belong to several e-bike Facebook groups and the link / call to comment is circulating on all of them. Thanks for helping to get the word out and keep up the videos!

I suppose it depends on what country you are asking about. IN Australia, an E-bike can ride anywhere a bicycle is allowed. Standard Bicycles or E-bikes all the same here. Though legally we do have the 25kph power cut out limit. Under you're own power you can go as fast as you can up to the legal Posted road speed.

We were at Gettysburg NMP last year and E-bikes were a common sight. I think they're the best way to explore a park like Gettysburg, (no bikes at all in the National Cemetery, as it should be) the rest of the park was fine with them. I would only hope they would put special ''bike lanes'' in the town of Gettysburg to get from one section of the park to another. Traffic in the town is horrible!

100% on point. I have advanced arthritis and I wouldn't be riding without an ebike. My whole life I spent in the mountains and an ebike keeps me going. Otherwise I would be crippled on a sofa. If I had to choose between cell phone and ebike, it's an ebike
