Oh, definitely. Between being inspired by an alien cryptid (weird how they try to theme some Fairy things as being related to Space and the Moon like the Clefairy line and Moonblast, only to give so many Psychics the aliens) and various European mining folklore that could easily fit (German Mine Kobolds, Cornish Knockers/Knackers/USA's Tommyknockers, Welsh Coblynau, English Bluecaps), a Fairy subtyping like Mawile gained would've been extremely likely if Sableye started as pure Dark or Ghost.

Sableye is the proof that we can still enjoy a Pokemon even if it's not the strongest in battle. But even then, thanks to Prankster, Sableye can be a deadly lead in battles. Plus, with the unique typing, this little boy will always be a favorite of mine.

No problem; I’m extremely guilty of only stacking attacking moves on my Pokémon. You can always keep the Dark move, and sub out the ghost move; as the ghost move won’t work on the normal/psychic types, and Sableye can learn the elemental punches

Sableye appears to be in the same group as Decidueye or Hisuian Typhlosion. They have some kind of connection to spirits, have spooky abilities like extreme perception skills, but aren’t actually dead. Them being a ghost type is merely coincidental.

I adore how much you have shined the light on Sableye's personality. I must admit, this video has definitely made me like Sableye more than I have ever have! The way it plays in the cards, how it is associated a lot with gems, and how fascinating overall the creation and story behind it is! I'm going to replay some old Pokemon games in anticipation for Scarlet and Violet, and when I play the games you can find Sableye, I think I'll add it to my team for sure this time! Such a funny little gremlin-like Pokemon!

I loved Sableye ever since i played through Emerald for the first time as a kid, i was stuck in Brawly's gym and couldn't progress further, then i found out i needed a ghost type and coincidentally there was a cave where i could catch one, so i caught a Sableye and i didn't level that little guy pretty much because i was "giving it a try, i guess" and literally sweeped Brawly's entire team. Ever since that point it became one of my favorite Pokemon. Later when i grew up and played through the new pokemon games i realized it's pretty weak but i didn't mind, i still loved it!

If there’s anything of personal belief on why Sableye is a ghost type is likely cuz of how some typings are general labels for different reasonings to fit. Much like how not all dark types are actually evil when they’re either just intimidating in looks or a trickster type, and like how psychic is usually the typing that covers for general space related Pokémon when on the surface you wouldn’t know if they truly should have psychic powers but the least seem “psychedelic.” In the case of Sableye, it’s probably ghost in the sense that ghost may just generally cover anything deemed “spooky” in behaviors and such and not just by any random action that can be conducted cuz otherwise more Pokémon can be deemed spooky in that regard (e.g. gorebyss hunting and eating method is disturbing but that’s just their biology rather than it intentionally being scary)

Sableye is my favorite ghost type for multiple reasons. First of all it’s the perfect example of my all time favorite way to portray and write a ghost character; a spooky, creepy little prankster who just wants to play and fool around with people for a laugh and good fun time, not a malevolent villain. Also the episode that featured it inspired me to create a Pokémon fan character who was basically a goth girl trainer who specialized in using Pokémon that most people thought of as “scary” but her goal was to show people that just because they look scary, that doesn’t mean that they’re mean or evil. And her main partner Pokémon was a Sableye. This character even eventually grew into being a fully original character that I took out of “Pokémon fan fiction land” and created her own original story for where she kind of a ghost-themed action hero, and writing it has been really fun! And all this creativity and fulfilling part of my life all started because of Sableye, so that gem eating goblin will always have a super special place in my heart. Although when I tried to have it on my team in the game and found out it can’t learn Metal Claw, I had to call bullsh*t on that, I mean how many times does it’s dex entry mention how it breaks rocks with its claws!?? The actual heck!??

Sableye’s been one of my favorites, especially since their appearance in the Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of X games. In those games, they’re cowardly yet savage due to the future of darkness. They act as Dusknoir’s lackeys and as long as he’s with them, they’re courageous. As soon as he goes down, however, they panic and flee. They served as the inspiration for how I run Kobolds in role-playing games, actually.

for how they digest gems is likely because they are lacking of a true digestive system, this make sense for an actual undead, and the Ghost-types that are actual undeads often need to feed on something to remain on the living world, like negative emotions, souls or life energy. Sableye's diet is the most physical one and would allow them to get a more physical body, for this from all the Ghost-type Sableye is one of the most "physical" in appearence.

Incoming tangent of a theory(?) lol Random angle on this, (my context is largely just the games,) but I always got the impression from its 3D movements that Sableye has a sort of possessed vibe to it, with things like the "floaty" animation of the arms contrasted with things like it's more twitchy animations, along with this almost mindless compulsion to devour so many gems they start growing straight out of its body and still, it continues in its gluttony. 🤔 Might just be me running along with specific details too much in my speculations, but it's fun to think about. K mean, for all I hear about it not being a ghost and just rumored to be so in the canon only to wind up being pretty much left at that, I feel like I don't hear enough about the potential of it being possessed instead, so to speak. Not to say it's literally possessed by a ghost, but rather possessed in the psychological sense, like it has this horrific, greedy obsession and won't stop for anything, sort of transforming into this dark-ghost hybrid that's "not all there" in a different sense than other ghost types. Not "dead," per se, but at least somewhat "gone." I don't know if I'm making the most sense here, because it's not even that I'm trying to argue it's a ghost or even being possessed by some other tangible force so much as by obsession itself? I dunno. Feels like the dual typing really meshes well when I kinda settled into my own theory on it here. (Just speculation though, of course, I love theorizing about pokémon as much as the next guy, so I 100% get having other ideas on any number of pokémon out there. I just like thinking about this stuff. ^^)
