Been living in Japan since July 2000, been married since July 2003. Started actually speaking Japanese more in 2007. Listening and being able to respond quickly we’re always my problem. That first point is very, very important. With children or other life events this is massive.. Running a business in Japan requires communication, banks, accountants, lawyers etc. I always get caught with specialist vocabulary but I often are able to ask for the correct word. Definitely relying on someone else to translate is impossible. Even hiring actual translators is hit and miss because translation isn’t always accurate to the intention of the author. Living in rural Kyushu since 2008 definitely helped me be able to speak more. Being admitted to the hospital was definitely a time when language skill was helpful Building a house Renovation of an office So many things for life require Japanese skill

I too have a Japanese gf, and my 日本語 is very low level, but I want to learn. I have self study materials, and her 英語 is intermediate. We both want to become better at communicating in each others native language. I really like that Justin is in the video, very good and I hope to see more of you two doing bi-lingual videos❤... To be honest I am hoping you both might do an American Movie/TV reaction channel. Any movies/TV you haven't seen, or both you and Justin haven't seen would be great!

I think this is very cool but it also shows the level of respect for the relationship. My friend has a wife from Okinawa and they've been married for almost 18 years. He does not speak a word of Japanese . That is his choice I just think that is Bad Manners. Last time I checked you were supposed to grow as a couple which means you learn different things as the years go on. I'm learning Japanese because I like the culture and I like the language. If I become seriously involved with a Japanese woman I think that would be a huge bonus. But very good posting thank you

It's true. Apart from language and cultural barriers, it's difficult to even meet someone let alone connect and build something. I'm living in Fukuoka currently, and even meeting girls for dating (something not really grasped in Japan compared to western understanding) is quite difficult.

What if people with speech issues due to natural birth or autism (i.e. Asperger's syndrome) would want to speak Japanese but at the same time their learning curve can be varied on the person with autism or speech issues, can they be able to find success on a relationship with a Japanese woman? I would love your opinion on this Asagi-san. I can understand that this video is understandable for most of the people without the aforementioned symptoms caused by natural causes. Thanks for your advice Asagi-san!

I guess for me. I am a bit discouraged at the moment. I have been in Japan for 7 months and have hit a bit of a wall with Japanese. Granted, I don’t think I am totally down and out because when I need to speak I find myself switching to what I do know pretty easily. As for dating… I have Japanese woman I do interact with but I have no way of telling if they are actually interested me or just playfully flirting with me because I am foreigner. I am not really good at picking up the signals here in Japan. In America woman tend to be very direct if they like or don’t like you. Here, it feels almost like a Japanese woman will find ways to be around you but at the same time only interact with you sometimes but still be sure to be near by. It’s hard to explain, I feel like it’s almost like she wants to see how I’ll react.

7 months is nothing, trying being here for 4 years and still only knowing basic Japanese and yeah I can't even put sentences together. I study every day for an hour or two, the language is just not intuitive at all if you come from a western language. As far as the dating thing, you gotta make a move man, that's when you find out if she likes your or not. You can't this feminine western thing where you're half in and half out. Id say if you haven't had sex by like the 5th date, then she's not interested/just wants to friendzone you. The friendzone is super common in Japan. Anyway, be more masculine than you were in the west b/c they are not super feminist/masculine women here. They won't tell you they like you and sometimes they won't even know it themselves until after they've had sex with you, then they backward rationalize it, "oh I must like them then!" And yes they always want to see how you react, they are always judging you.

Don't worry to much most Japanese men I know find dating Japanese women difficult as well. They are just as confused as you are. I'm seeing a trend here amougst my Japanese peers. More and more of them are heading to places like Thailand, Vietnam and even Taiwan for wives which was unheard of when I first come here. Even with me after dating numerous Japanese girls I eventually ended up with a Korean girl living in Japan. Nothing against Japanese women just found them difficult to figure out and never knew where I really stood with them. Whereas my Korean girlfriend is very straightforward with her feelings and we have no communication issues.

I bet it's not, Japanese who have been learning English all their lives vs a Westerner who started maybe in college. Like in other Asian countries, women who are interested in dating foreigners would already have a decent English level But it's a nice way to show you respect your partners culture and also you won't annoy your partner by having to rely on them for everything to live. For some people it's like their partner is a personal translator / assistant instead of a partner lol
