Edmunds Road Test Editor Kurt Niebuhr takes a closer look at the 2018 Volkswagen Passat GT to see what sets it apart from every other Passat. Starting at the track, we run the GT down the quarter-mile before heading to the handling circuit to get a feel for the character of this sportier Passat. After that, it's over to the garage for a closer look at some of the details that make this Passat a GT.
Q: Does the 2018 Volkswagen Passat GT have a different engine from other Passats?
A: The Passat GT uses the same 280-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 engine available in other Passats. So, no. That said, it does make a bit more of a growl thanks to GT-specific mufflers.
Q: Does the 2018 Volkswagen Passat GT come with a manual transmission?
A: We wish! The Passat GT uses Volkswagen's six-speed DSG automatic transmission.
Q: What makes the 2018 Volkswagen Passat GT different from other Passats?
A: On the outside, the GT sets itself apart with R-Line bumpers, LED headlights, a honeycomb grille with a red accent line, GT badging, black mirrors, a black roof, a black spoiler and smoked taillights, among other things. On the inside, the GT features special two-tone leather seats with contrasting stitching on both the seating surfaces and the steering wheel.
Q: What does the 2018 Volkswagen Passat GT compete against?
A: The closest competitors would be the 2018 Toyota Camry SE V6 and the 2018 Nissan Altima V6, but a completely redesigned 2019 Nissan Altima is on its way.

I work at Volkswagen and this is my favorite car we sell right now. The gti and golf r are great but I like having a little more space and it's nice to have suspension that can absorb harsh roads while still handling pretty well.

Rockin my GT for 4 years now with 44K miles. The VR6 and DSG are amazing. If only it had 4-motion. If Arteon had this same power train I would jump. Traction control is not really the problem- the DSG clutch takes a moment to fully engage. If you’re too quick on throttle, it will hang on the friction point - which FEELS like traction control issue, but it’s not. This car PULLS. love love love

That's awesome my car is also 4 years old and basically right at 45k as well! Now that the Arteon has 300hp with the DSG, and AWD is still an option, I've also been heavily considering it lol. Might add it as a 3rd car once I can get some finances figured out. I would prefer to keep the Passat.

Great review of the GT. I’ve owned mine for about a week and I think you hit the nail on the head - it’s not a sport sedan but rather a sportier Passat. To me, that’s perfect. I also own a 2015 GTI to satisfy my need for fun, and considering that, the GT is the perfect daily driver 👍🏻

Going from a 2014 VW GLI (30th Ed.) to à Passat GT this coming week. Sad about losing the manual transmission but I’m pretty excited daily drive that VR6! And that sound! One day, when I won’t be dragging baby double strollers and car seats, I’ll downsize onto a nice GTI, that’s when the fun really starts I guess! For now, I’ll enjoy this! Great video! Will sub!

The 3.6L is awesome. It’s really a VR6, more than a standard V6. VR is some acronym for some German word, meaning halfway between V and Inline. It’s basically a really steep V6 but just with one head, rather than 2.

Just a small comment, I love my flat bottom steering wheel in my Golf Sportwagen. For normal parking lot maneuvering, the flat bottom just feels so good and actually makes the ergonomics more comfortable/useful in slow speed turning. Thats my subjective opinion.

As a long time VW owner and fanboy....I’m finding it extremely difficult to get excited about any US offering other than the GTI. VW used to be quirky and unique...but everything coming out of Tennessee is so bland. Not bad cars at all, don’t get me wrong. VWs are better than ever reliability wise....but I’d trade the quality improvement for some soul any day. I just really, really wish they still gave us more Euro-spec choices. We never got the modern Scirocco...I’d have sold my Audi S5 for a 4-banger Scirocco. But nope. We get the Atlus and a Passat GT without even the option for a manual or 4Motion. We want our fun VW back. ...again...GTI is so ridiculously good....

Nice video. But a few things I would like to add. You can turn off the traction control and it's a VW part you make the connection/ wiring by the gear shifter and cigarette lighter. As far as the breaks the MK5 R32 big breaks bolt on front and rear that and slotted rotors with stainless steel hoses will take care of the breaks and I believe the MK5 R32 cold air intake also fits. Super Sprint makes a headers back exhaust system and Bilstein makes a electrinic controlled dampers. Neuspeed makes swaybars ect. With the help of some VW of the shelf parts and the aftermarket bits the Passat GT would become a driver's GT. I know you can buy something else but it's more fun to build a car your way. Hope to pick one up soon.

VW should have tried a bit more to make this sporty than it ended up being. The brakes and tires are something that the owner can replace with more sporty options, but the engine specs are the same as the standard Passat. They should have gave it at least 300 hp like the European 3.6 VR6s.

I just got mine a couple of days ago and so far am very pleased with it but my mindset is this is not a performance car but a R line Passat that they fixed all the things that were wrong with it... ie. POWER. I will say the one thing I do not like with it is the tires, they are so bad... It is difficult pulling into traffic quickly with them, it's so bad I am planning to go to Discount tire this weekend and purchasing a good set of tires for it.

I just bought this car yesterday 2 day ago. Some immediate thing i can say are below: Pros: VR6 engine and transmission are definitely the highlights and the primary reason i bought this car Trunk space and rear leg room are great since i'll be putting my 2 sons back there Handles fairly well in the corners and is soft for bringing the family around Cons: While the car is soft, it definitely can be a little bit firmer as my wife's mazda6 grand touring handles better and is still compliant for the most part Steering is too light, my wife' mazda6 grand touring has way better steering feel and feedback There is some torque steer at 75 to 100% throttle MPG is definitely not up to par with comparable cars in segment (i.e. accord sport and camry V6) Overall this will be a good addition to our family lineup.

I'm at 20k and it still turn heads after 18 months. The grille obviously catches their attention. I drove in reverse for a half block and the pipes hollered. One guy races was like what type engine is that. But otherwise it's ok. I hate the continental tires and this strange DSG that I'm told will need service at 40k mi. The tech said to ditch it at 70k. I'm on oil change #3. It was burning about 1qt after 6500 mi ea time and all black. Not sure if this is normal.

I love my 2010 Komfort model...it's plenty fast, but I am worried about buying a new Passat because...well, frankly, it's American made and they admittedly cheapened it. If the regular (non-GT) model is the same performance as my 2010 Komfort, I wouldn't need a heavier and vastly larger motor to save 1 second in 0-60. Also, are these new engines going to get the longevity of the very mature 2.0T with timing chain that mine has (120K miles and car is virtually perfect). I may wait for the Arteon and test drive them all.

Maveric073 it probably has their haldex electronic differential, which is directly tied to the traction control computer. No traction control means the electronic diff won’t function. And besides strait line acceleration, the traction control honestly helps lap times most of the time due to brake vectoring and that electronic diff.

cloridan Beauchamps - I'm able to turn it off in my 2018 Cadillac CT6. I wasn't able to on my 2014 Passat TDI. Was a total PITA if you got stuck in 4" of snow, couldn't rock the car back and forth, and you couldn't spin the tires down through the snow. Their traction control is tied to their electronic transmission. One thing that I've learned from owning my last 2 VW's, they think that they're customers are all idiots. I blew a fuse in my Passat, and nowhere in the owner's manual, nor on the fuse panel door, did it give me an idea what the fuse was for. I called the dealership, and they told me to bring it in for them to diagnose at $105/hour labor rate. For a fucking blown fuse. I replaced the fuse, and didn't have any problems with it again. But the next time I was at the dealer, I asked if I could get a diagram of my fuse box, they said that the company wouldn't allow it, and that I should just come into a dealer if it happens again. That's great, until you're stranded in the middle of the desert with no cell service. Bunch of fucking morons. The whole damn company./rant

The real star of the show is the potential. That VR6 can be tuned to 500hp or more with a turbo. It comes very detuned at 280hp and will support much more performance. Even if you only go FBO w/ a tune you're likely close to 400hp. Get some coilovers and you have a sedan that is quick and sporty and still practical. It may not be super light, but it can be quick for not too much $$$ in it

I own the 07 wagon with the 1st us version 3.6 engine ( that engine looked 2nd ver) and the tiptronic with sport mode trans. It certainly hauls ass, handles well, (i have low pro 18's on gti wheels, and the sport mode definitely reminds you the car has solid torque and hp. Vw needs to stop dicking around with both its image and its models, beyond the golf/gti line. I mean they have a golf, gti and r model. They know what they are doing with that line and support it with actual tiers of performance. The gli snt really a 4 door gti and the other r models are just body and interior kits not performance upgrades. My car shares parts with at the time vw us top performer the R32 golf. If this is a gt, does it share any parts with any performance cars for vw? I mean I saw an Atlas R model yesterday really? Vw needs to do like they did overseas and give us an R36 or the turbo tdi's that have almost identical performance specs as the us 3.6 w/Better mpg. Either make performance cars or dont...stop half stepping vw because I shouldn't have to look to audi for performance sedans when you fricking own audi!

Just bought a 2018 Passat in White.. it's an R Line is really sharp looking with the larger wheels.. This car would be a MONSTER with the V6 but the 2.0 Turbo has all I need ... And the mileage on the HGWY is the best I've ever had in a medium luxury Med/Lg sedan. My normal short trip driving is 30mpg.. I get all of 36 mpg's on the 100 mile Highway trip I've done. Do not need a V6... And with the lunatic policies of this administration concerning Importing Oil rather than simply keeping it local makes NO Sense.. NO change in environmental gains what so ever.. But I am paying and many others are now $4.35 for the good gas.. $4.00 for the 89 octane.. 2.0 Turbo is brilliant now.. ! The -1 second difference on the strip is not worth the fuel I would suck over time and this 2.0T passes anything I have needed to.

As I understand it, the GT was the brainchild of US dealers who begged VW for a version of the Passat they could sell against the vastly improved 2018 Accord, Camry, and Mazda6 with trim levels that come close to true sport sedan levels. That goes a long way to explaining the relatively minor upgrades compared to the stock V6 Passat. VW had to invest almost nothing in terms of design, engineering, or production changes to make it available. The good news is that for a real world price of 25K-27K (here in the Pacific NW) there's some margin for handling and (minor) performance upgrades. Better tires and brakes are easy and relatively inexpensive. Aftermarket exhausts at least make you "feel" more powerful. APR offers ECU tuning for minor improvements in overall torque/horsepower with ECU changes that improve acceleration. The Passat GT is never going to be a thorough going Sports Sedan. But the combination of factory improvements, already attractive features of a roomy midsize sedan, and relatively inexpensive aftermarket upgrades can make it an attractive proposition, especially for those who are already VW fans.

so.... my 2018 bmw 320i has ONE HUNDRED LESS horsepower than this car, and comes up exactly as fast to 60 mph. ???!!!!!
@nelsonvanvickle8862
@nelsonvanvickle8862 5 жыл бұрын
If you noticed, he did two separate 0-60 runs, one in D and one in sport. Sport mode netted the better time, at 6.6 seconds. Your 320i is a 7 and a half second 0 -60 car, at best. I know, because I have both a 2011 328i and a 2017 GLI and my bimmer has a 230 hp v6 that isn't as fast as my 210 hp GLI...

Terry Hesticles no one really cares about 0-60 times in a midsize sedan segment. Undefeatable traction control doesn’t help things either.

TheDustyaman that's still not better. My 2010 CC does it in 6.5 with a 200hp i4.

It's not a V6, it's really an inline-6 with a slight offset between the cylinders. Thus, VR6. The R is for inline in German. It's an unusual engine, but definitely unique! Sounds like no other either.

The more you guys talk shit and hate on VW The more it makes me love my 2016 VW Passat... I’m currently on my 7th VW.. Never because of mechanical issues, all because I wanted to upgrade to a newer year... I’ve tried BMW 3 series and it was the worst car I ever owned with countless mechanical issues... It’s all on your personal experiences!!!!

In reality, meh. The twin red line is a bit much and not done in true German "sleeper/understated" styling. Maybe better in a different color. This car is asking for more bolt ons asap.

From a marketing standpoint, this car is both welcome and over due. It is indeed too bad that you can't disable the Traction Control and VW should offer a manual transmission option too. VW's are better with manual transmissions usually anyway. I suspect VW will do well with this car, but would do even better with On/Off Traction Control and a manual transmission option.

Nice car and all but let me guess, Volkswagen governed it at 115? How fucking boring seriously. The car is decent, but I’ll much rather go with a bmw instead any day. RWD with a whole lot more power and torque and funner to drive too.
