There's never been any crossover between luxury watches and the Apple Watch, but now with the Apple Watch Ultra, has that changed? Is it time to take the Apple Watch Ultra seriously?

"It's going to look after you, so you can enjoy your adventure" ... as long as you charge it every 30-60 hours. Another fantastic video Andrew! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the ultra. I think you're right that the size is massive, and I think many people will be turned off by this when they try it on. But we'll see if Apple can overcome this and make big honking watches the trend again.

I was going to mention that, and I have to wonder, where does one charge it when climbing Everest or up to their knees in the sands of the Gobi? They could have added solar to make it truly "ultra".

I think this is fine for what it is. It’s definitely not replacing a mechanical watch in my books. But as far as a health tracker is concerned, including workouts, that odd track, swim, dive and for sleep monitoring, this is fine. I do like the Titanium case and Sapphire crystal and the improved battery life. But its too big and i know I wont end up wearing it. So i wont be getting one. Perhaps if they make a 42mm version of this i might give it a go. I just ish people would stop shitting on this and actually try one for its purpose (think wrist computer rather than just a watch).

I have a Casio protrek. Really fun but more of a worry than mechanical. If it runs out of juice then that’s it unless you have access to electricity. It’s a real hassle to find a place to plug it in or carry extra chargers with you. Mechanical may be simpler and do less, but it can do what it does for much, much longer.

Man...I have not been the biggest fan of Apple due to their anti-consumer way of doing their business, but I, a traditional watch guy who just hates Apple overall have to admit this watch is absolutely astonishing. Titanium case, sapphire crystal, and 100m of WR... I have to get myself one. 800 bucks for all of that and all the functions it has is an absolute steal! And we can all agree that that night mode is super sick.

I have a garmin dive computer, it's basically a fenix 6 with all the features but a full fledged dive computer built in, the small version I have lasts 7 days in smart watch mode, 30 days in power saving, the bigger version is like twice that. I'd say the difference between that and this is garmin is like a field watch or data tracker with smart watch capabilities and this apple watch ultra, vice versa. But I'm very surprised apple has a built in dive computer and can't wait to see how it goes in the Ocean!

Apple watches, which are really efficient in terms of power consumption, still consume waay more energy than a traditional rotor in a mechanical movement can convert. But your idea is a good one, when this will be possible (saying when, not if), it will indeed be a game changer and will bring a lot more users into the Apple ecosystem.

I’m not sure if it’s how the Ultra is measured, but the regular Apple Watches measurement refers to the top to bottom measurement of the case. The left to right measurement is about 34 for the 40mm versions and 38 for the 44mm versions. So I’m assuming the new 49mm Ultra is about 40-42mm from left to right.

Several things need to be considered: repairability (which is probably worse than even the quartz watch) lifecycle (which for smart watch depends on operating system upgrades and compatibility with current smartphone line-up, which someday will be just dropped). Pure mechanical watches are out of this question completely, it's only a matter of proper servicing and handling. As real life experience shows, I can use quartz watch after 30-40 years from production, but I doubt that Apple Watch can be used after that long. Thus, Apple Watch does not equal to watch at all :) (But I have to admit, my iPod Nano 6 gen, introduced in 2010, is still working).
