I'm a Toyota guy but credit were credits due. Not only did Ford Australia engineer a block that stands up to some of the most bullet proof performance engines in the world but they then went and dropped them into damn near every car they made.. Thanks to that ppl are going to be building relatively inexpensive monsters out of junkyard parts for decades to come.

"damn near every car " what are you talking about? falcons and territories witch are just falcons witch is now extinct ue to lack of sales think about the numbers in global terms .. they are nothing ...pretty sad imagine how things would have went if they put them in transits F trucks and made diesil one a hot one could have even gone into a nice Jaguar who apparently contributed to the head design

The Barra is hands down the best truck engine ever build! With it's tall deck, long stroke and tiny ports it does an excellent job of hauling the family around and not using all the numbers on the Tacho!

Someone might build it if it would actually fit in the engine compartments of commonly modified cars, and if someone would actually buy it. V12 LS would be cheaper to begin with since the original engine is already a V, and there are a lot of available aftermarket parts for the LS.

@@2jzking181 You know how expensive a 2JZ is in Australia? Abit of a unicorn here. First of all, know what you're talking about - A turbo barra motor that's produced after June 2006 can handle 380rwkw+ quite reliably. I had one with well over 200k km's pushing around 400rwkw with no issues. 450rwkw on a stock motor (besides valve springs) is very common. To make such a combo reliable, rods/pistons/springs is all that is needed at that power level. It does not cost 25k to do these mods, I would be very skeptical if I was quoted over 8k by a workshop. There is no doubt the 2JZ is extremely capable but let's act like grown ups here - assuming you are an adult, a little bit of maturity by not spreading miss information to push childish agendas goes a long way.

@@yjkadernot my words man haltec full boost loads of people involed with building barras,have made vids and say the keyboard warriors that say 3k 5k in mods getting this and that are dreamers.jz are everywere in Australia jz might be the king of 6s but there expensive man there just a different kind of animal.i really don't care about the LS this and barra that bla bla,im not a keyboard warrior man,i just watched some fullboost and haltec read comments from guys trying to get reliable hp from a barra is a big effort,also I enjoy watching anything be developed,and will follow it,if you like fords that's heaps cool,relax man its all in good fun. 2JZ FTW

@@yjkader the 2jz can make more than 600bhp on the stock engine. You also have to take into consideration that the displacement is higher. In all honesty, i'd rather build an LS motor from a junkyard since they cost just about the same as the Barra and they have a much bigger after market than the Barra lol

I was a Nissan fan boy in my teen years still am but after owning an few Nissan turbos I found they don't like everyday driving I don't go nuts on my motors I only do small things but from my experience the Ford turbo barra can't be beaten for reliability price fuel consumption it's just a good all round motor that loves everyday driving and isn't bothered by the heat in Australia where I live in summer 50°c happens regularly in summer

Considering the mostly pedestrian market they were designed for, the fact it largely matches such a high bar overall, with capacity advantage thrown in, you really couldn't ask for a better assessment.

Heck yeah, great vid. The occasional Barra did suffer from a bit of water jacket movement during casting, resulting in some having thin spots in the bore, but it really only comes into play with engines running massive horsepower, and the blocks are so ridiculously cheap that anyone having to source a thick wall block for their big boost build will likely only spend 1% of their overall budget finding a good one 😁

I am loving this series of comparisons on the straight six's. The Rb comparison to the 2jz was an eye opener mostly for the material hardness and the attention to detail on the casting quality in the toyota. It was nice to learn a bit about the barra as well as its not one we see in the UK at all. If you can get hold of one I would love to see this done to a Mercedes M104 block to see if the attention to detail in materials and casting quality is there as well.

We already know which ones flow the best when in factory spec. Exact order you said above, but remove rb30, but there is so many variables to test in between stock and drag spec head that it would be a $50,000 exercise in parts and labour to do the test you are asking for properly.

Love my Barra, spent 5k on a BA xr6 NA and 5.5k for a supercharger kit and a few other bits and bobs and she’s sitting at a comfortable 420kw. Saving up for a BF typhoon it’s gonna set me back 30-40k but it’ll be definitel worth it especially over a supra or skyline. 👌🏼

The Barra is the best I've seen both an R33 GTR with a Aussie Ford Barra turbo engine! And a VL Calais with Aussie Ford Barra turbo engine. Have yet to see a RB or 2JZ in where a Aussie Ford Barra engine lives

Australia s was just as Smart in terms of engineering ,an eh Holden and xp Falcon was better car for australian conditions as a non 4x4 option ,than a 120y or corolla considering we had same population as Saudi Arabia ,I am sure our design and engineering teams , with same amount of money would match Japan ,I think we could produce d have produced a Hilux , the problem in Australia,to many Japanese sicofants and that makes us not so smart and we lose our industry to yes reliable or thou not so much now ,crude Hilux es ,let's take her to beach once every two years😂shall we ,go auss🤔😏

I followed a tb48 gtr build a few years ago they were hitting 2500hp but were lifting heads continuously past 1500hp with that being there main fight I would assume the blocks are performing well, definitely would be interesting to see a comparison like this one

Barras do crack unfortunately, usually between cyclinder 3-4 in the cylinder wall when the engine is pushed on a relatively close to stock setup, I have heard this is a cooling issue but no solid evidence to back it up, I’m sure Barra specialists are aware of this issue and probably have measures to prevent it happening on more serious builds

In the USA the 92-97 2jz-ge non turbo engines are under 350 bucks. These have turbo rods factory. Id bet it would out run a Barra dollar for dollar

Man O War even v8s too. What v8 or bigger can 3x their power from the factory safely? I always here these junk yard ls but they have more cylinders which equals less stress on the engine as the power is more distributed in a sense

@@NISMOIZKING Ever heard of a Chev LM7? It's a 5.3 LS based Iron block. Around 220hp standard, 800+whp on stock bottom end is very common. Can push a 1000hp with filed/clearanced piston rings which one could do for free at home with a file and a feeler gauge.

Here in the states we had jeep running a straight 6 from 1989 to 2001. Ford ran them in the f150 back in the day also. My current daily is a 01XJ. 195k.

but you may not find many privately owned xr6 with over 400k. xr6 turbos are rare to see with over 300k. Taxis are no measure. Toyota camry and aurion will do 1m as a taxi.

These tests aren't comparable as billet expands with heat and has sleeves in it. Different material basically so not really apples with apples

A billet block is not a compromise of casting techniques the thicknesses are whatever you want when you order it a cast black probably cost 200$ to manufacture byt the 1000s and cost you about 1500$ a billet block costs 15000 to buy and probably cost 12000 to make starting with an 8000$ "BILLET"

Does the large engine size of the Barra equate to good heat dissipation from the larger surface area or is that method of heat loss inconsequential compared to the other ways it does it?

No surprise...Ford always made a great inline 6 engine. As well as Chrysler and GM too. Slant 6 & Stovebolt engines are solid.

The external webbing will easy make up for the reduced hardness ( higher hardness material is more prone to cracking too) . Thickness is not a issue as no one bores a barra beyond the factory 4l displacement. At the end of the day both blocks can do 1000-1500hp no problem and 2000hp is not impossible.

You should test the 3S(GTE) block against the 2J. They're supposed to be the same engine just a 4 & a 6 version. Same square, 86mm bore & stroke. Be interesting to see how true that is!

I feel like a lot of the people hating on Barras aren't aware of the xr6 turbo version, handles a lot more than the base line barra motor. Barras come in a range of variants

Love ya work mate. 👍 I have 1 little whinge though. Anychance of broadening the scope of analysis? 1000hp seems to be the bench mark these days for 'high performance' engines.... Shame that too. 1000hp is virtualy USELESS for anything other than drag racing, or bragging, unless the rest of the car has the nuts modified off it too the point it is no longer practical for use (enjoyment) on public roads. Let alone traffic or rain. Then you need another car to take it somewhere so u can drive it as its intended to be used (and the process begins again lol) Any chance of doing some videos that approach these engineering comparisons from a circut racing or sports/street perspective aswell? Making a USEABLE 600-700hp from a small displacement, highly strung engine suited for track/street is actually more difficult (maybe not usually quite as expensive) than just going for big game as the way the engine makes its power and deals with heat, fluid dynamics blah blah blah is just as, or more, important than how much it makes. A 1/4 or 1/8th mile slip is a reference mark of sorts granted but it only tells a fraction of the story. Sure, your big balled monster of an engine will probably smoke me off the mark or from a slow rolling start in a straight line, but, (in my opinion) anyone with some nads and practice can go fast (relativley) in a straight line but its where the straight line ends, changes direction and becomes another straight line that is the real challange. and then there is rally drivers....

-IOI- it’s just as simple as is comparing and analysis popular blocks. Reliability or 1000hp drag racing is relevant to reliability of 600-700hp of circuit racing in our opinion. These videos just show the basics of what to look for for a solid base for an engine build. If we went into every aspect of an engine the videos will be 10 hours Kong and we’d spend tens of thousands of dollars we don’t have making them. Just making these is a couple of grand each and we don’t make that back on views. Self funded while we grow

Motive Video I understand, its just the ‘bigger is better’ mantra does not fit when building an engine that ABSOLUTELY requires correct flow dynamics to be first and foremost. Inlet piping, plenum/runner spec, aftercooler characteristics etc etc. maintaining flow velocity and the ability for it to increase is paramount. Ie; my RB25det with very conservative (relative) setup SMOKES most big Hp setups around the twisties. (Built by professional tuning workshop in Japan)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the strength of the block dictates what sort of cylinder pressure the engine can endure; a larger capacity engine will require less cylinder pressure to make the same horsepower, when compared to a smaller engine. So no doubt being a 4.0L helps the barra make the impressive numbers that it does.

No, the block isn’t the limiting factor. It’s the clamping force of the fasteners keeping the head on the block. You’ll push coolant before the block bores fail

Question, is it possible to add block cement in between the cylinder bores with some holes/pipes running horizontal for some cooling to make it semi siamese bored for strength? Maybe along with partial deck filling?

I've always wanted to get a hold of one of these and use it as a truck motor here in the states. I wonder how it would do with towing. The 240/300ci I6's in the F150's seemed to do pretty well. Bottom end torque was definitely there, just no power up top and horrible on fuel. Are these overhead cammed, 4-valve, cross flow head engines the best of both worlds? Anyone over there in Australia use these engines in a light truck setup?

I would say that as 2j is getting rarer most tuners will switch to the LS. You can obtain them brand new, in comparison much bigger capacity, sold both as all'aluminum or iron block and it fits many engine bays.

Lol BMW is garbage, they can't make reliable power at higher HP, i remember some of my friends had their n54, they all failed at around 450 HP after longer term, BMW should go to bed.

@@HansensUniverseT-A lol your statement that's backed up by "your friends" and not fact. Own an n54 before passing comment. Ive been running an n54 reliably for 3 years at 410-470 whp depending on the tune and fuel as my daily. Look after it and it will treat you well. I will say though, over 500whp I feel the engine is being stretched to its limit.
