He said clearity is as good as Reverb G2, i think im gonna cancel Beyond. $1600 for whole kit vs G2 for $299 on sale. No resale value for beyond and glare and bad sweet spot is just not worth it. I just got a email from Bigscreen for face scan and production is starting 2 months from now. Hmmm why they ask to face scan now? Maybe they want to prevent people fron canceling preorder?

@@ji3200Im pretty sure he said the glare is similar, not the clarity. For starter, the PDD is better, better colors, darks ecr. But for 299$, yeah the reverb is the way to go. And production is not starting in 2 month. It is already shipping, unless you live outside of US or order very late. Yes Im biased for the beyond. This is the way to go, and I'm an ready to take some inconvenience for the form factor

@@ji3200 with this logic I would never buy anything :) I'll just wait 5 more years until something much better comes out. I don't need the very best at any time. And anyway I'm not sure something better will come out before at least 3 years. Not without major tradeoff or massive cost. Currently the beyond does everything I want for a VR headset. So I'll go with it. And most piece of techs don't have big resale value anyway. Beyond can not be shared. But big the time I will not use it anymore, it's resales price wouldn't be much. And the fact it's not shareable feels like a false issue, because I never really shared my device, not for more than 30 minutes anyway. So unless my friend have a completely different face and IPD it won't be a problem for me. The conclusion sums it up. It's a nice product, And I happen to be part of that niche

@@briannormant3622 yeah you are right. 2560p resolution is way ahead of time so its gonna last for many years. Wish they improve more on glare and sweet spot. 75hz is perfectly fine for me since 90hz visual is not sharp as 75hz youtubers said.

I tried the Crystal and it felt like I was balancing a microwave on my head. The visuals delivered on the hype but it was just so ridiculously bulky that it was a huge relief to even go back to the Index. The Crystal for me was a very very poor fit until I'd packed some foam in the sides to stop light leakage and bought the Apache head strap, which lifted the weight off my nose (I have a narrow face and also PPD). I now only notice the weight and bulk of it when taking it on or off. In flight sims, which is what I bought it for, it's just not an issue anymore. The visuals far outweigh (pun intended ) the bulk and outdated form factor for me. Having said that, I look forward to newer headsets with a smaller form factor, provided they can deliver top of the line visual and sound quality.

@@VRFlightSimGuy me too. Great review btw! Very interesting to see how flight simmers like yourself feel about the headset, which is a very different audience from say, VR chat users. Overall seems like this is a general crowd pleaser! Coming from a Samsung Odyssey +, I think this is going to blow my mind lol. Designs like this are definitely the way forward. This is really an incredible achievement for the first gen of small form factor high res micro-oled headsets. The next headset in my sights is the Visor by Immersed. Seems like it's shaping up to almost be a BSB 2, essentially, but will definitely be significantly higher price (and without natively compatible controllers) so not really competing.

I've been simming in VR for years, and I'm always surprised by how few people think to point a fan at their face. I bought a pedestal fan on Amazon for about £30 that has 10 speeds, and I simply put it on speed 10 and point it upwards at my face whenever I am sitting in my sim rig. It helps immensely with keeping your face cool, even when using airtight headsets (which mine are, as I have modified the facial interfaces to conform to my face shape). I am sick and tired of slinging a brick around on my face. I've been doing it for nearly 6 years now and I cannot wait to be able to use VR without seeing and feeling a hot, heavy brick of a device wobble around in front of my eyes. The Bigscreen beyond is the headset I have been dreaming of for 6 years, and I am not exaggerating. MicroOLED, ultra light weight, Koss Porta Pro audio strap (CV1 drivers), lighthouse tracking, native SteamVR compatibilty, clear glass lenses, *DISPLAYPORT*, no battery, no counterweight, no bulky strap, and no moving parts. The Beyond is everything I have ever wished for in a VR headset and I am itching to get my hands on one! I read another comment here about the Pimax Crystal feeling like you're balancing a microwave on your head, and I couldn't help but laugh at how true that is. That perfectly depicts my Pimax experience, and I am never using such an atrociously heavy device again.

Strangely for me it always feels like after a bit my brain just erases the HMD so I barely notice it regardless of how big it is. Can't even count the number of times I've tried to tried to touch my face, or raise a glass or something onyl to remember DUH...Not that I wouldn't love something small and light like the BB, I just feel it isn't as huge a factor as other things like decent lenses.

@@JohnVanderbeck Well I've used heavy and light headsets over the years, and there is a distinct difference. I used a Rift CV1 for about 4 years, which is a very lightweight device, and I definitely notice the weight of my modded Vive Pro that replaced it. Once you've used a lightweight headset that genuinely almost disappears on your face, heavy headsets are unbearable. I can tolerate my Vive Pro because I modded it to be a fantastic device, but it's very heavy and gets very hot. The weight also causes the image to sway around in front of you, which is again something that really bothers me after years of using a headset that doesn't really move.

I agree. But a fan, especially on the highest speed, when your body is steady is not a good idea - your joints being exposed to a constant air blow are cooling down, and with the years you are gradually getting rheumatic pain that you are initially not aware of. I speak of experience.
@nb8c_fd
@nb8c_fd 10 ай бұрын
@@mastichka I appreciate the info. However, I point my fan at my upper or lower torso, so the only parts of my body receiving constant airflow are hips, thighs, shoulders, neck, and face. My left elbow gets some, as my fan is positioned to my left, so I may buy a small sleeve to cover my elbow when racing.

Thanks so much for this, Steve! Really appreciate your thoughtful and detailed review and thoughts. It was thanks to your channel I moved from Reverb G2 to Pico 4. Having never owned an Index (so no lighthouse or knuckles), I'm still waiting for that next headset and experience. And I know every headset has it's pros/cons, but it just seems like everything so far has a "good, but...." I only play PCVR, so if we can get a form-factor similar or even slight larger than the Beyond (and I think enthusiasts would be fine with custom interfaces, but maybe not general public), but with inside-out tracking and good lenses, etc. I had big hopes for the Crystal, but now it seems unnecessarily huge in an early-adopter way (like 80's cell phones vs now). I'd love to see a video of your theoretical 'ideal' headset for PCVR / VR Flight Sim players - like an imaginary mock-up of the design and description of the tech/lenses, etc. that would at least give the industry something to aspirationally shoot for, at least from a PCVR enthusiast standpoint. Big fan, thanks again!

Yea, zero airflow would be a problem, especially in places were it is often hot and humid. Funny looking at prices in Australia, the Crystal is a few hundred dollars dearer than the Aero. (both $1200+ dearer than a beyond). Likely will sit on the fence and see how the other headsets being delivered soon turn out. FI. I have seen a mod for the Beyond already, were it can flip up and down and does not use a face interface at all.

Form factor and uOLED are obvious things to desire. It's the small FOV and lack of quality off-ear audio that kill any enthusiasm that I might have had for the Beyond and leave me hoping for more from the Somnium VR1 or the Valve Deckard (hopefully sooner than most think). Of course I want better clarity and colors - that's a given for any upgrade, but I also want a larger FOV (not smaller!) and not to lose the amazing audio experience I have with Index.

The beyond audio strap should theoretically have even better audio than the index. The fov is a 5 degree drop off, very small difference.
@DMan-ud6bt
@DMan-ud6bt Жыл бұрын
@@RidgeXR_2 Unfortunately, even if the audio quality is great, and I sincerely hope it is, what has been shown/pictured is an on-ear design. For me, on-ear does cause heat buildup and might also put pressure on the ears over time. Neither is even remotely possible with an off-ear design. I understand that Bigscreen did some work to increase their FOV to within a few degrees of Index, but it is still smaller rather than what I crave in an upgrade - larger FOV paired with increased clarity. I know some might think I'm nitpicking, but after 7 years of VR, I do truly expect upgrades to be without compromises or regressions from what they are supposedly upgrades from.

Enjoy the game or sim not the headset and buy what you can afford if you're a first time buyer any headset it a great experience accepted maybe not a vive pro 2 they are terrible for the money 😆

I fly fpv racing drones and have tried various goggles of different sizes, None of them are comfy for more than 5 mins at a time tbh, the bigger ones with a nice screen are too heavy, smaller ones are nice and light and fit snugly but end up fogging up and giving me eye strain anyway. I do like the idea the bigscreen goggles but I think vr will be limited to short gaming sessions unless things get better.

Great video, nicely balanced, echoes my thoughts (without having tried it). Again though, MSFS only supports openXR. So if you are playing MSFS, the BB supports it. SteamVR supports OpenXR and OpenVR.

Thankyou for your comments 😊 What I am referring to, is that you cannot bypass Steam VR as it does not have a native OPEN XR integration. You can certainly still use MSFS, as you've probably seen in my first video 👍

@@VRFlightSimGuy steam VR does have a native OXR integration, otherwise it wouldn't work with MSFS. Or maybe you mean the BB doesn't have its own openXR runtime and app, like Varjo Base?

@@lurchilurch5507t The point is you are still going through SteamVR which is then sending the data on to OpenXR which means you don't get the native benefit of direct OpenXR implementation, which is faster than going through SteamVR.

I've never had eyestrain issues in any headset starting at the Rift DK1 and on. You aren't really looking at a screen due to the way the focus works, it is just like looking outside as your eyes will be focusing at different depths. Arguably an HMD is better on your eyes than a standard 2d monitor where your focal plane is fixed.
@erikjones356
@erikjones356 Жыл бұрын
Thanks John. That is a very clear and insightful explanation. I can completely relate to the 2D Monitor eyestrain point. Using various depth adjustments (as in HMD VR systems) would seem to make more sense, as that would replicate natural vision functions. Great Point! @@JohnVanderbeck

Depending on if or how much it bothers me I'll try solving it myself with a small drill bit, and black mesh if light is a problem after making holes through the side. It might be the material itself up against your face and not the lack of airflow inside though. Unless the third party does custom face scans it might not be worth the trade off.

VR-cover is selling cotton-"socks" for example for the Pico 4. They make every facial interace more breathable and I've actually modded my CV1-coat to the Pico 4 and before to the Odyssey instead of buying new ones. Maybe they somehow fit to the BSB.

@@briannormant3622 I was thinking black mesh fabric on each side would probably remedy that. It's not really a big deal anyway depending on where it is. My passthrough stopped working suddenly on the old Vive, so I took the rubber nose part off to have quick access to seeing real world things and I never even really noticed the giant hole unless I was intentionally looking strait down. I intended for it to be a temporary fix, but even in that headset the airflow was such a nice unexpected bonus that I never put it back on.
