It is common sense that all Chinese people know: food stores or snack shops in train stations are a little more expensive than those outside. If time permits and you want to save money, you can buy snacks at a supermarket outside and eat your meal outside before going to the train station.

I just took the train from Zhuhai to Guangzhou a month ago and it was super convenient. That route isn't even the highest speed and is only 250km/h Within the right distance, HSR is way better then airplane. More comfortable, more spacious, easier to stretch your body, better window view, feel less spatially enclosed, better sense of control (e.g. you can get off the train at any next stop if you really want to), less boarding time needed, etc.

The things in the cylinder is dried citrus skin, or mandarin skin. It can be brewed with black tea to introduce some aroma.

Since you're in Kunming, you should go to Dali and Lijiang. One of the KZfaqr who went to Dali intended to stay for 1 day, but end up staying for 9 days. They could be in Lijiang now. They're a Scottish couple.

China's countryside and towns seem to be a lot more varied, which makes it more interesting when looking out the window. Most countries even if they have a good rail network, it's cheaper and quicker to fly and you don't miss much.

Usually Chinese bullet train can reach speed 350km/h. But CR450 can reach 450km/h( The world record). And high-speed rail mileage reaches 45,000 km in this country, which specially designed for magnet bullet train.....

Haha, by the way, a little advice for tourists coming to China: before getting on the high-speed rail, it is best to buy some water and food at the convenience store outside the high-speed rail station. The food on the high-speed rail is usually much more expensive because the food in the high-speed rail station has additional store rental and transportation costs.

I am Chinese, and I would like to share my personal experience about queuing and politeness. About ten years ago, I took a bus in the countryside. There was no queuing at all, so everyone squeezed to one door at the same time. If you couldn't squeeze in, the rest of you had to wait for the next bus, which was an hour later. Everyone was like a beast, because resources were limited, so everyone could only take care of themselves. Although it is much better now, as long as everyone pays, they will be guaranteed a seat, but the fear of "limited resources" still leaves a mark in people's hearts. There are 1.4 billion people in China. When life is difficult, there is really no quality or politeness to speak of.

less developed areas tend to be more hussel and bussel but it’s usually pretty safe in China.

here is another suggestion: If you want to experience the latest Chinese high-speed train speed, remember to buy a high-speed train starting with G when buying tickets. The high-speed train starting with G has a speed of 350km/h. Your high-speed train is an ordinary CRH EMU, and the speed is generally 310km/h ish

Sorry about that. If you showed a 'gap' in the line, i mean maybe you just dont want to stay too close to the person in front of you, people in China will think that you were not lining up so they might cut your line without asking. I know its bad, hope we can get improved in the future.

lower tier cities will usually have drivers trying to get your business. if you know roughly the price(ie checking with didi first), it's fine just to use one of the locals. once you agree on a price you are fine, you won't get scammed. if it's a taxi just make sure the meter is on if you haven't agreed on a price. with didi, all of this really isn't necessary but there are still local chinese who use these services. also it's likely you did not get scammed in shanghai. first it's more expensive in general and if you got a lift during the night when normal public transport options are closed, it will be more. I don't remember how much you paid but say $40-50 in the middle of the night is not uncommon. didi prices also adjust depending on hour due to availability. if you feel like you are getting scammed and 'forced' to pay, take out your camera and start recording. find a local police which shouldn't be too hard. when xi took office a decade ago, one of his primary missions was to clean up corruption at all levels so a lot of things that might have occurred 20 years ago just doesn't happen now like scams, petty thief, to government level 'bureaucracy' that required cash under the table to get anything done fast.

Try to order food as soon as you board, especially Macca. The train is so fast and it may take some delivery time from store to train platform when train arrives, the time window is only a couple of minutes. I leanrt this lesson after a few times missing Macca on these high speed trains.

Guys, the seat class of the Chinese high speed train is different from the airplane, the ‘first class’ seat on the train is not the most luxurious, in fact it’s the ‘business class’ where you will have the controllable lay down chair, however on an airplane, the first class is the best, then comes the business, so there’s the difference and easy to make mistakes

You are not riding a high-speed train, but a Harmony train, which is relatively old and has a speed limit of 250-300km/h. You should buy a Fuxing train ticket , which is a real normally high-speed train.

For any tourists who are going to China for the first time, try not to pay attention to those black car drivers who pick up passengers to avoid being ripped off. If you don’t understand Chinese, just raise your hand to refuse. Try to choose Didi Chuxing, the price is relatively transparent.

I grew up in China in the 70s, 80s, as I remember back then, it was common that there was only one bus for every 100 people that were waiting, I had to fight like a warrior just to get on a bus. In Western countries, people are much better at queuing except on highways when the lane merges, people also like to cut the line and back up the traffic.

I took HSR from Hong Kong to Beijing (8 hrs), then from Beijing to Hohhot (Inner Mongolia) 2 hrs... very scenic routes, cost as much as flying. Interestingly during the Beijing to Hohhot route the train (the latest Fuxing) didn't travel up to the full (safe) speed of 340 km/hr, which happened quite frequently from HK to BJ. Looking out the window heading to Hohhot you can sort of guess why...we passed by several nuclear power plants.

The coldness in temperature may due to the altitude rise geologically from Guangzhou (the delta area) to Kunming (the plateau).

Sorry about that. As regards lining-up culture in China, it's generally much better in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan than in the Mainland of China. Yet the Mainland has improved quite a bit and I 'm confident it'll improve further over time.
