Another thing i think influences Lose/Win-streaks is reward oriented thinking. If you had autolosses but were doing fine you reactively might think these correct plays were wrong, so you end up changing them, losing even more. On the other hand if you did well, are mostlikely in a freeflow state and understand what u did was right, u are more likely to do these correct things more, making you win even more. Atleast thats something i feel a lot

Hey this is a pretty cool video, really interesting and does a good job of explaining the process of climbing. Low elo players sometimes talk to me for help and then they link their opgg and have 12 games played and think that's enough haha. I am sure your videos are helpful for most of the playerbase so nice work! The only thing I would say is that the 30/30/40 rule is way more of a scale than you made it out to be, and I think it could be misleading to Lower ranks. In challenger, you are 1 of 5 players, and you probably do only have 20% impact on the game most of the time (on average). But in silver - 2 duo smurfs are and can be 100% of the team. That's because the lower elo you are, the more control over the outcome you have, the lower you go, the less auto losses happen, because players aren't good enough to punish mistakes or win the game. Ekko gets 1 double kill level 3 and double buffs challenger ekko carries the game: 15 min FF ---- but in silver: 10-0 ekko still isn't gg I would just hope that low ranked players aren't going to start talking about their 30% auto loss, that number should be far lower for them.

@CoachCurtis
@CoachCurtis 4 жыл бұрын
Hey man really appreciate that ! Although I see where you are coming from, I respectfully disagree. In a game filled with solid match making in silver, where there are silver 2 level players in each role with no smurfs, this ratio in my mind still applies. This ratio only breaks if there are smurfs within the game. Yes games might end faster in high elo, but that doesn't necessarily mean the amount of games won or lost actually changes. We have to remember that the level of play at each elo is relative, so for a higher elo challenger player looking at a low elo silver game we may we able to see how they have 'more' control over a game, but that doesn't actually matter since they don't have the ability to do so. But regardless, like I say in the video, it's less about the ratio and more about the mentality knowing that the ability to climb is all in your control :)
@samoberg7157
@samoberg7157 4 жыл бұрын
@@CoachCurtis "This ratio only breaks if there are smurfs within the game". Well not quite. If you follow the argument made in your video to its end, then the logic says that the smurf is equally likely to be on either your team or their team. Their might be a slight adjustment since you yourself are not smurfing, but it doesn't negate the general point.

Hi exil, sure in low elo you as a single player yuo have more control over your games but at the same time a bronze/silver player has not the knowledge to carry by himself, he can learn sure but it requires PATIENCE. to me this is the main problem for elo player, patience, climbing requires a lot of time and effort. At least that's my personal experience in ranked games both in LoL and overwatch.

For me it’s not even the games that piss me off, it’s games that player behavior is the determining factor, much of which is controllable by good ban systems or player discipline setups. If my top lane gets absolutely crushed, I’ll grumble a bit but it doesn’t sit with me. The guy who loads into the game with the mindset he’s going to ruin 4 other people’s nights is what really gets me mad. It’s more of the collective culture of the game itself that I think a lot of people are frustrated with. I think even a 10% to 20% swing into the All on you category would do wonders for the community. If 50 to 60% of games are in your control, it feels a lot better on the user experience. That’s on the overall community and Riot to fix these sorts of issues with player behavior. Great video, I really like that 30/30/40 rule. That’s going to be my mindset from now on!

I haven't grinded ranked yet, but i have grinded aram to 2500(~top 1% of players). I found that in mid level mmrs you would get those people that would tilt easily and flame you(in aram it would be because they are dead all the time, so they watch you instead and have time to type). I would try to patiently say that this is silver mmr and that means we are both bad but that would just make them madder =). Also loser's queue is a real thing, I purposely kept queuing after losing and tried my best in every games I played but you could see in the lobby, before the game even starts it was already lost. At least 1 auto fill every single time and people with really bad losing streaks as well. My only advice is don't play solo, its not worth it. I've been struggling, kinda hardstuck going back and forth from silver 4 to silver 3, always complaining about my teammates (although I never flame) and so on, but your video made my mentality a lot stronger, I don't tilt nearly as much as before and when I do I can calm down again a lot easier. I can assure it works because yesterday I made it to gold 4 for the first time (I started playing in march/april btw) and I KNOW I'd still be in Silver 4 0PL if it wasn't because your vid helped me stay positive and concentrating in those "all on me" games. @ArcaneTricksterRS 4 жыл бұрын
This is the first video I watch from you and I gotta say I pretty much agreed with most of what you said. The only argument I have is that most people do not complain about the games they get, they complain about the system being the way it is. To me, having 60% of the games being auto-decided is just wrong. Having 60% of the games of me being basically a non-factor is wrong. Obviously, there will be games that are auto-wins and auto-losses, because the factors contributing to that will far outweigh your own impact, but having those games be 60% of the total is just bad. It's so sad to think that, on a day that I can play 10 games, I can only feel competitive in 4 of them, because the other 6 are so easily auto-decided. Riot needs to change this. Matchmaking balance is so stupid. Too many smurfs, too many boosted players, too many secondary accounts that troll and not care. And the problem is that it generally takes just one player from either of these categories to be in your game to make it an auto-win or an auto-loss, thus the 60% auto-decider. That's just sad, because, if that's the case, then how does someone who is "worthy" of diamond, climb through platinum? How many games do they have to play to reach that division? Based on your analysis and the 40% "on-you" games, it would probably have to be more than 500 games just to get through platinum. Since your skill difference is higher than your current competition, but not that much higher, you would probably win 23 out of those 40 and lose 17. Therefore, overall, over 100 games, you get a 53% winrate, which is enough to climb, but it will also takes HUNDREDS of games to do so, and for someone who cannot invest all that time, it means that it will probably never happen. And I think this is the real problem. In order to get to the elo you "deserve" to be, you need to play so many games. And that's a problem, because it seems like your division-rank does not show your actual skill and level of play in the game. To put it in other words, Riot's ranking system is completely wrong because, if you do not have 1000+ games on your account, you are never really in the elo bracket you deserve to be.
@Hexaile
@Hexaile 2 жыл бұрын
An easy way to make it at least somewhat better for these players would be to implement the same system as valorant (and other games), remove the promo matches. THe promo match system is a dated system that at the games inception was a good idea, but as the game has evolved, its just dated.

I believed this theory until I watched my friend get stuck in mid-gold for multiple seasons despite being at minimum a mid-diamond player. I previously coached several iterations of diamond teams and worked with coaches who coached at the professional level in other regions. This player made it to masters in a previous season but can not get out of gold now. I have watched them play in matches against all diamond teams (because I put them on the team knowing they weren't actually gold) and crush everyone. I have watched platinum players scoff at them and get absolutely decimated in repeated 1v1's where the plat player was allowed to choose the matchup. I've watched nearly 100 live games of this player and I know how good they are. Maybe they're not Faker, no, but they are 100% not a gold player. I've seen the patterns not work out to 30/30/40 because the number of variables in games is too high and too many of them are out of your control. I would gladly collect some VODs from their current play and show them to you if you're actually willing to watch them. I won't post OPGG because that's not a realistic method for analyzing someone's game play and it's nothing but blanket assumptions without proper context. I wanted to believe in the system you just explained, but after several years now of watching this guy I have lost all faith in Riot's rankings. The idea that "If Faker played that game he would have won" is really frustrating to hear. For you to say that a Plat or Diamond player should have to play like Faker to climb out of gold is kind of ridiculous. Being able to point out that someone didn't play flawlessly isn't the same as demonstrating that they deserved a loss. If you review ANY professional VOD from any region they ALL make multiple mistakes during every single game, so "flawless play" is not a legitimate argument. Like I said, I'm happy to send you VODs if you tell me where to send them.

there's invariability in gameplay but eventually with a large sample size of games played the number of losses and wins attributed to teammates and the enemy will even out like coach curtis said and your friend will become the only consistent factor throughout those games. if your friend is a performing at a mid-diamond level and is still stuck in gold then i'm assuming that's the problem doesn't lie in his teammates but in his approach to the game.

I feel like 90% of my games are unwinnable or unloseable. There’s been such an increase in afkers and inters, I think there’s a big problem with solo queue that I think is ruining the climbing experience. I think Riot needs to do a few things: Be better about punishing toxic behavior and stop dumping fresh level 30 accounts into mid silver. New players are probably at mid bronze to high iron skill level. There are also a lot of smurfs at that level too, so you can end up with huge skill differences within the same rank. Honestly, the whole thing is a mess and I don’t think I’m saying that out of butthurt. I feel like I’m always carrying dead weight teammates or the enemy team are a bunch of paste eaters. I’d say about one out of five of my games is competitive and one out of ten is a really closely matched fun game, win or lose.

25:07 A little addition: You see the 2 numbers relative to Jeff and Bright Beginner: μ - average σ - standard deviation Let's take for example Jeff, he has the average μ = 1182 and the standard deviation σ = 200 Why are these important? According to 3 sigma rule (also known as 68-95-99.7 rule) Jeff would play at level in a range from 982 (which is 1182 - 200 = μ - 1 * σ) to 1382 (which is 1182 + 200 = μ +1 * σ) 68% of the time, so in a 1 sigma range around his average. 95% of the time he will play at level in a range from 782 to 1582 (μ -/+ 2 * σ). This works because Jeff's performance has a normal (also known as Gaussian) distribution. Now, it's very likely that distribution of any given player's performance looks VERY close to normal distribution with some average level of play μ and some deviation σ. What can we deduce? Improving is actually shifting your distribution to the right, so the average μ shifts to the right, but the shape of the distribution is the same. Let's say Jeff improved a lot, now his μ is 1500, and distribution of his performance is still Gaussian (Bell's curve), so it "shifted" from 1282 to 1500. Also, if you work on your consistency, you reduce the σ. Let's say Jeff still plays averagely at 1182, but he worked on his consitency, so now his σ = 100 (it was σ = 200 before that). What does that mean? That means that 95% of the time he'll play at level in range from 982 to 1382 (before it was 782 to 1582) Hope this information helps. Sorry for any language mistakes, English isn't my native language. P. S. As always brilliant and very relevant video.

I think the biggest problem is that it takes a long time for your MMR/ELO to adjust to changes in skill level. So maybe you had some grand light bulb moment and your skill level is now on par with someone in gold 1, instead of your current rank, silver 1. But because of that 30/30/40 rule it might take hundreds of games in which you (rightfully) perceive yourself to be the better player to actually get to that new level. And that can be frustrating as hell :D

The opening slide and I'm already interested. My best season of climbing I had never been beyond gold but always told myself "You're really a plat or diamond player." You're just being held back. I only started to climb when I started telling myself "You're a gold player until you get out of gold." Then I pushed and made it all the way to diamond. Basically I told myself, I am the rank that I'm playing in and the only person holding me back is myself.

This is actually a really logical way to explain the current state of solo queue. About 4 years ago i was a silver player and i literally had 20 games in a row with 0/20 bot at least no joke (my whole match history was full of loses with 0/20 bot every time), I guess auto losses can be exaggerated sometimes, now I see solo queue from an other point of view and as my skills evolved as well now im a diamond player. Anyway, keep up the good work man you're really good at what you're doing and you are helping the community a lot!

A little tip for those people who sometimes go 0 and 12 themselves: STOP DYING! This sounds like blunt, kind of stupid advice, but this simple concept seems to be rarely understood. No Kled, you cant 1v1 the 3 and 0 Fiora at this point, stay away, build armor and farm under tower, look out for tower dives and waste Fioras time - She will greed to kill you again, and tilt you even more to make you a non factor - distracting her from winning the game as she and her jungler play for KDA No, Ashe and Sona, poking the 10 and 0 Draven, and his 2/0/12 Thresh Support wont be worth to stop them from getting another canon minion - Because he will farm you BOTH like a pair of canon minions. You shouldve stopped the moment you both hit 0/2 each and just waited for someone else on your team to get fed No, Lee Sin, 1v3ing the enemy Darius, Kha Zix and Talon over the scuttlecrab might NOT be a great idea - farm, counter jungle when your enemy jungler goes for plays on the other side of the map, secure objectives to trade atleast a little bit. No, you dont have to gank the Darius with your 0/3/1 score at 10 minutes, trust me, just taking your camps will give you alot more, and the enemy top a lot LESS gold. What im trying to say is After your first 2 or 3 deaths, play from behind, respect your enemies harass range, look out for tower dives, and just SURVIVE. You dont have to get kills, you can even miss alot of your minions and be 40 cs behind, aslong as you SURVIVE and dont become another minion the enemy Mordekaiser can farm, you're helping your team ALOT

@@DragonRuffian It is not that easy, when they start to dive you, but you can still aticipate it. As Top warding tribush and see the enemy jgl get into position helps a lot to get back to savety. with game knowledge you start to read the oponents movements. you will see when they want to dive and you can back out in time and again: defensive wards are your friends. yes they might get first turret, so what? they would get turret anyway after they kill you. ofc it also depends on the enemy and your champs. you would still think twice to dive a 0/4 Lux, Leona or Ryze, as they can still snare you under turret and trade kills but Talon is free real estate once he is behind

If your 0/12 that just shows you are consistently doing something wrong. The game maybe a loss, but more importantly it should be reviewed so it is understood where it all went wrong. The problem is sometimes giving a person 1 kill is enough to start the snowball. I have had games where the lane is lost on 1 bad trade. Sometimes that is hard to see in the moment. The last time I had a match that bad, I immediately went and watched a video of someone higher elo play the match out because I felt I didn't understand the matchup.

I love how easy it is to just justify bad games with math, rather than make the system more balanced by punishing people ruining the experience. I shouldn't have to play 3 bad games at all, ever, because of poor human psychology. The people playing ranked should be the people that deserve to be there at the level they deserve to be at all times. No smurfs, no trolls, no fucks. It's a disgusting experience to have to queue up and waste 25 minutes of the day waiting to move on from an obvious loss of a game. This is the game designer problem. They don't want to make a system where people only have one account, or can only play ranked with subscriptions. So the only way to climb is to suffer or to play all day every day, or to be Faker.

The thing about the system is that is does nothing to make itself less frustrating. As you said, 30% are auto wins. So, why not reserve one game of those 30% for a special case? For example, if a player loses 3 games in a row, give them an auto win just to give them some confidence back. In my opinion, the 10-games loss streaks simply *should NOT* exist. The thing that helped me is completely redefining the wins and losses, redirecting the focus of those terms to my laning phase and simply stopping to care about the outcome of a match itself.

I actually have an account that I tanked hard learning off roles (almost a 20 game lost streak at one point). I went back and started playing my main in my main role and I still have not gotten back to even LP gains consistently. I climbed back from a 46% WR up to a even 50% (412 games total) with a 70% WR on my main. I am playing a division higher than what I currently am and even when I win those games I am not getting 20 lp. Most games I get somewhere between 15 - 19 and lose 25+. this has been over around 50 games. I can confidently say it is much much easier to tank your mmr and have to win 2/3 games to climb. It something I am currently going through. The system that gives LP does not adjust back up to high lp as easy as it adjusts down to low lp. It isn't even one of the high up divisions either. While your concept around the 20lp gains for playing in the same average skill rating can be accurate. You can mess up your mmr to the point that the system will try to force you to a lower division and will not correct for an extremely long stretch of games even if your winrate drastically improves.

But Coach.. You're looking at the system as it is right now, trying to explain the optimal way of treating the game in its current state. That obviously is the right way to look at things, if youre up for the climb & it surley helps a lot of ppl once again BUT I don't think ppl should take everything at it is. I'm agreeing with everything you just said in your video and yet I 'm still not a fan of the elo system we currently have.

People usually afk on games that seem lost to them. You could still influence some of those games before they afk.
@SerialNightmare
@SerialNightmare 4 жыл бұрын
@@florin920 It's often REALLY hard to make that influence though. I've had games where the team kills were only like 5 apart in mid game, and we actually took more turrets than the enemy, and had some scaling champs (I play Tryndamere). I've been up 60+ cs and 4 or 5 kills against my laner, but because the princess in mid-lane fed a few kills, and bot lane is behind by like 500g, they think the game is lost and ff. For the last few months, 90% of my games are a coinflip of who gets the afk. When I say afk here, this also includes people who die like 2-3 times in lane and make the decision to ff@15 since they are mentally afk at that point. Some games, I crush lane and make my enemy laner ragequit. Other games, someone does that to my mid/jg. I've had people quit the game after dying 1 time. In these games where my team has the "afk" player.. I will be playing like a pro, split pushing and getting objectives, matching the enemy's push (sure, not EVERY time, but definitely majority). Yet still, the dude who got himself killed twice mid in the first 5 minutes of the game sits in fountain and bitches the whole time his lane is getting shoved in, or his laner roams and gets a couple more kills in a side lane. I generally have the right mentality to play solo queue.. but lately, I don't even want to waste my time, because so many people are playing this game that don't even want to play this game. How many times do you queue up and hit accept to find someone declined? How many times do you have someone afk in your game (your team or the enemies), or die a couple times and spend most of the game typing in chat? How many times do you get into champ select and have someone dodge? The last one has variables, I know. I just don't even want to bother trying to climb when this is how nearly every game goes lately. Then, the cherry on the sunday here.. When it's the enemy that ff@15, it doesn't even feel satisfying. Sometimes it does.. but lately, not at all. When 90% of your games are decided by someone afk'ing, it makes the team game less fun. Not to mention that maybe you were trying a new build, but the enemy ff before you finish 2nd or 3rd item. So many people playing this game are that annoying little kid that would turn the video game off if you were beating their ass at Street Fighter. THAT is MY problem with solo queue, and LoL in general these days.

Honestly, let's dispel part of the notion that just "getting better and focusing on yourself" will get you further in terms of climbing, in elo hell especially. From a personal stand point, yes, focusing on improving is good for you. But from a climbing standpoint, it's muuuuch much more RNG in elo-hell. If you're continuously stifled by bad team in elo hell than at some point you have to say where is all that work I'm putting into getting better going. At some point, you're going to hit a wall where you have a string of bad games that fucks up your MMR. Case in point. I won 11 games in a row as support the day before today. Today? 8 games today, all losses. First game, ADC yuumi - fed. Second, ADC 0/10 top lane fed a sion, 3rd, sup went afk because he was mad about dying once. Fourth, top lane intentionally fed because he didn't like the jungler. Fifth, same thing. Sixth, top lane said he was bored at 2:15 and said he was going to feed the enemy laner. Seventh, Jungle and adc were legit bots( i have the video). Eighth, top lane 0/13 into a sion. Sion ran the game. I was either Soraka or Leona all these games(except the game the sup left). I don't know how I could've played better, I don't know what else I could've done. I can reflect on my own plays but at the end of the day I had zero control on how these games were going to play out. Now, i only win 14-16 lp but LOSE 17 at B2( i was gold III last season). How the fuck do you honestly overcome these kind of games? because when they happen they fuck up your MMR completely.

@willnash7907
@willnash7907 4 жыл бұрын
Excellent analysis. This of course leads, taking the 50% on it's 25% win for the average player (by definition) into account, on a 65% lose and 35% win ratio for the average player. This difference of 30% points implies games where both team lose but paradoxically none of them has ever been recorded on video or any database and they remain only theoretical. This is called the Great Winrate Deficit and is one of the greatest mysteries of modern league of legends.

this mathematically doesn't make sense lol you should actually be getting a bit more free wins than losses, bc the only thing you can control in game is yourself. If you are playing well, your team has 4 other players that can royally fuck up, while the opposing team has 5 players that can royally fuck up

I thought about the rule and i feel like it should be the 20% rule. If you really play at your elo you should be the one that decides the game in 20% of games because there are 4 other people in your team that can either win or lose their lanes. In a perfect world they should all be evenly matched so every matchup has a 50% chance of winning or losing. You only play the deciding factor in 20% of those games (0 winning = auto lose, 1 winning = auto lose, 2 winning = YOU DECIDE, 3 winning = auto win, 4 winning = auto win). So in reality 80% of your games are coinflip of which you will lose 40%. The remaining 20% are decided by you and you will win 10% and lose 10%. Thats probably why it feels a lot more coinflippy than you described when you are at the elo you deserve. The difference in this model compared to yours is, that the amount of games you can influence increases with your skill. A Challenger player in Bronce can influence 95+% of games, in plat 90% in dia 85% etc. but will eventually decrease to 20% if the matches are even. The same goes vice versa. If you dont deserve your elo your influence becomes 0 or even negative. The negative part is intersting, because if you are on your plateau elo the amount of troll/feed/afk (if you behave yourself) will always be 5/4 in the enemy team (because they can get 5 trolls and your team only 4). If you are ranked too high your gameplay is equal to a troll, making every game an autolose or way harder than just a lost lane (basically an antismurf). But as always great video. It annoys me so much to hear my dudes complaining about coinflip all day.

On the topic of streaking: What got left out here is the high likelyhood of just random streaks of the same result. Even a perfectly random coin will most likely have a 6 to 7 turn tails streak as its longest streak when thrown 100 times. Randomly getting 5 bad games in a row is much more likely than people seem to assume.
