no idea why this sentence became a meme. was anyone ever hungry in kcd? there's a cooking pot every 5 meters and food is lying around everywhere. i was constantly overeaten because henry is a glutton and always has to eat entire pot at once.

The most eye opening thing about your videos was how useful swords were and how little maces and hammers did to plate armour. This went against a lot of games I played as a kid. It's good you are willing to show us the real deal of armoured fighting and how different it is from unarmoured combat.

Sadly medieval combat went through gamification before it became part of pop culture. Early DnD, sword and sorcery novels, etc. put weapons in categories and gave them statlines that make sense in the combat systems of games. (dagger is fast, longsword slow and heavy, armor protects from cuts but not blunt force, etc.)

It was also widely accepted and still is that swords are a pretty poor choice with fully armored combat. This channel changed my mind for sure

They said that they wanted to do much much more but were to inexperienced, only 25(?) people and had a lack of time and resources for more features. They plan to implement everything they wanted in the first game into the second. So half-swording may be in there!

Not currently, Theyve already said in ign interview that the blunt weapons would still do extra damage to armour than sword in KCD2. I cant blame them tho, it's a common stereotype still among even some sword experts like Matt before, and I still respect them.

What second game? It's been half a century since that game released and it was way to steeped in hyper-religous storyline. I would've been alot happier with it if it were a low magic fantasy game set in a fictional world.

The whole point of Kingdom come deliverance was the historical accuracy, making it a fantasy game would go against the point of the whole thing, and the main story has nothing to do with religion. Even with the mistakes it makes, I legitimately respect their desire to depict combat with a realism that most medieval games lack to a degree. Of course, it’ll never be totally accurate because even the most accurate illustrations of medieval combat, like Dequitem, cannot be totally accurate. The weapons are blunted and I don’t believe Dequitem and his opponents are *actually* trying to kill each other. I imagine there’d be a noticeable difference in combat if you knew that your fate if you lost is *death* and is why I think historical medieval fighters would wash the vast majority of HEMA practitioners. But nevertheless, the attempt to do so is extremely admirable and is a definite step up in terms of depictions of medieval combat.

I think a halfswording button would be a fantastic addition . Like you said, it could transition your balde to half-sworded stance where your thrusts do higher damage and a higher chance of scoring critical hits but have much reduced range and then your slashes/cuts can become strikes with the pommel/guard. Also, I don’t think we should underestimate how useful attacks to the face are at this time even in armoured combat in the battlefield. Most of Henri’s fights are not duels, but skirmishes in the wild, often against lightly armoured bandits. If we look at medieval manuscripts from Germany at this time, they almost always show battlefield foot combat done wearing either bascinets with no visors or with the visors lifted up. Very rarely do you see depictions of men fighting on foot with their visors closed in German sources. Now of course we can’t always take manuscripts at face value. This might be an artistic choice so that the writer can still depict human faces on the characters. However, when depicting cavalry charges or knights on horseback, then they are almost always depicted with lowered visors. Moreover, the characyers in medieval manuscripts rarely have distinctive facial features but are rather usually identified by their heraldry, armour or crests. Clearly, the implication seems to be here that visors were most useful on the horse or when threatened by archers. So in conclusion, this makes a lot more sense of how many slash and cut attacks there are to the opponent’s face. A well armoured opponent will be immune to many of Henry’s attacks, certainly, but most of Henry’s opponents are wearing thick gambeson and open-faced kettle helms or visorless bascinets, just like on a real battlefield.

I really gotta agree with you there, having buttons for several weapon wielding stances for different weapons would be a great addition. It would surely give variety to the each opponent using different stances and switching through stances as well.

A lot of these moves do deal very little damage to armored opponents, that's a thing in this game. A lot of these attacks will kill an unarmored opponent immediately or make them yield, but armored opponents just shrug them off. It'd be cool to see different attacks for people in plate armor, but they had some serious engine and manpower limitations when making this game, and I'm happy with what we got

Yeah that's its saving grace, hacking at fully plated bandits rarely kills them, when you beat them they're usually still alive in the floor, just exhausted, letting you finish them off with a well placed stab

True but from what I've seen with kcd 2's combat from the trailer/gameplay reveals it seems like it'll be improved. Far more halfswording, looks like there are attacks using the pommel and blunt parts of the sword more, and the clinching system looks more advanced from the looks of it. We'll have to wait and see though.

Best channel on YT. There’s a real beauty to a channel that’s dedicated to two ppl donning plate armor, trying to kill each other. Even with the commentary videos, this guy has receipts for days. Keep up the good work!

The team was small when they made the first Kingdom Come, they did not had included the crossbows either, maybe this is why we could not use all these techniques, hopefully in the second game we will be able to fight like you are describing. Awesome video as always!

Ultimately the issue as discussed in this video is that in Kingdom Come, you're fighting a WHOLE LOT of people who DONT wear plate armor, and if the combat system was already complex, try to imagine adding in combat moves JUST for fighting plate armor. So, yea everything makes sense when you remember that many opponents you face will be those where all the shown combat methods are fully effective. In truth, a realistic plate armor fighting system wouldn't be very much fun not easy to do becasue plate armor combat is far closer to a brawl than actual martial form. It ultimately comes down to who can be tired out and then beaten/stabbed to death first.

@@wingedhussar1453 this isn't a weapon issue, it's a technique issue. The entire point is that the very manner in which you fight against a plate armored person is different from someone not wearing plate armor. Further, that manner is close, brutal, intimate...something that is very hard to present from a first person perspective in a game.

Warhorse unfortunately didn't chose the best swordfigters for the first game. I know some of them personally and one of them is doing choreography for theatre plays and movies so he's more like a stuntman and I would even say that he does disservice to historical accuracy with his armory of movie props. One of the other guys is okay and knows HEMA pretty well but the important thing is that none of them are reenactors who would actually attend battles or actual fights in proper armor. I know one swordfighter group that worked with Warhorse on the second KCD and they're a bit better at least. @@lukewithann7256 Yeah, I like Adorea as well. Daniel Vávra actually knows them and they did some fight scenes for the Fechtbuch documentary but I don't think they worked on the game itself. I'm a member of a team that creates short fan films from the world of The Witcher ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hN2RnLd-v7bZe3U.htmlsi=asbGZIzm7oMpdDym ) and Adorea should do a fight choreography for one of our episodes this year so I'm looking forward to working with them. It's not easy to find swordfighters who can do a good fight choreography because it's often done by people who do something we call scenic swordfighting in our country. You can usually see swordfighter groups like that doing shows at castles on stage during summer season and they usually wear awful costumes and don't care about historical accuracy at all and they often do the same bullshit you can see in Hollywood movies in terms of swordfighting. They also often work as stuntmen in film industry so that's why the fighting and costumes often look so bad. We worked with some of them with our team and while I don't want to just shit on everyone I don't like their attitude. But they're not all bad. I'm definitely not an expert on this but it seems to me that it's improving hopefully. I know that at least two new groups worked with Warhorse on KCD 2 and they both look pretty good. One is called Invictum and the other Servus Bellum and I've met guys from the second group at battles so I know that they're not doing it just for show and do actual fighting and from what I've seen from their videos their style seems similar to Adorea.

Thank you for this! I'm a huge fan of KCD, and have since been looking into medieval sword plays from the Ledall roll and others. While there is huge room for the game to improve, I believe they're doing great work in replicating some of the mechanisms of longsword and arming sword techniques that the modern community has revived. Hopefully the next game, as well as other developers, put greater efforts into all the excellent feedback you have given. Awesome channel! You gained a subscriber!

One redeeming thing about swords in kcd, is that with properly high skills and stats, sword stabs on some lategame swords are probably still the most effective weapons in game in my testing 😊 even tho it's not supported by animations/moves, they just work

I totally agree with you, but i think the issue comes in the game having so much variety in how much armour the enemies are wearing so it would be kinda hard for them to make a combat system that works for all the different variations

The game already tracks damaged done to body parts and how armored the area is. The high damaging attacks just need to be more believable for swords.

Great video! I am sure there limitations in choosing between a fun video game, and an accurate simulation. Maybe more of the combos could include half swording? Nevertheless, videos like these give me a new appreciation for the game, and the real history behind it. :)

Thank you for another great video. I have a question about your SIGI King. Did you torn off the cord wrap and replaced it with a leather? Or is it only a leather cover over the cord wrap? I am planning something similar, since the epoxy cord is too slippery and also thin.

At first I was going to dispute that I feel like the lack of variety in thrusts is for gameplay purposes, but honestly thinking about my experience when I started playing thrust centric in the game I started getting very bored, even if it was insanely effective against anyone in anything but a full visored helmet(and even against visored helmets it still worked, just with more persistence). I think there are some inherent balance issues in the combat system that unfortunately are hard to work around if you want things to remain as realistic as possible(in terms of thrusts being lethal) but also if you are going to have a system that makes them so essential to gameplay they should be more varied as well. Yes you can get by perfectly fine without doing them, it's just harder and I'd argue that thrusting in the game is one of those things that has a learning curve. When you first start out they take a long time and seem to get deflected easily so it's hard to figure out where to fit them in. Once you know what scenarios you can exploit, the game becomes trivial.

I doubt there will be ground fighting and dagger combat in the sequel, in the first game I fought armored enemies with a “stinger” sword and bouché shield and the stabs with that sword pierced their armor even if I poked their helmet or chest plate. I wouldn’t call it realistic and accurate knight fights but it gets closer than any other game. There is a physics based game called half sword that is the closest I’ve seen to fights like yours, despite the characters being pretty floppy and awkward. But I’ve seen people pull off half swording and grappling that ends with a dagger to the gaps in the armor. Fun games but nothing beats finding people willing to spar and train in armor. No game compares to a real opponent and no restrictions

The problem of ground combat in games is that it's hard to implement. I don't think that the sequel will have a ground combat system and I don't blame them. Of course it's a big part of armored combat, but I am happy when they implemt a bigger punish for enemies on the ground. That's enough for me to make me happy!

@@dequitem I was really impressed with the game half sword, when your opponent falls over you can keep them from getting up with one hand and poke and prod with a dagger until you slip between the gaps. One time I was stabbed in the leg and I toppled over, but I stuck my short sword in his gut as he closed the distance to finish me off. I was stunned when I got up, very visceral gameplay.

The immediate thing I noted in Kingdom Come was that the rondel was not a thing 😄 The immediate thing I noted in Dequitem videos is that when the rondel comes out the fight is over 😁 Basically, with a little refinement, Kingdom Come's system would be truly superb. We shall see with Deliverance II. That said, the armor system in KCD was perfection.

I also feel Kindomcome lacks the half-swording to make it feel realistic. Maybe the devs can implement a half-swording mode when player is wielding a longsword.

I understand its flaws with the combat mechanic when judging realism but i actually used real combat strategy for armored melee combat to improve my combat skill in the game. I was amazed that it carried over. One hugely beneficial combat technique i implemented was the mcbane technique which was a detailed account of a 7vs1 brawl with swords. It even turned into a challenge practiced to be an ultimate test of the swordsman that was done for entertainment.

There are actually 2 types of stab attack (outside combos). First is the regular stab, and the second is when you hold down the stab button and aim upwards and then release, this will stab higher up at the face level. But i dont think it changes anything in regards to your excellent analysis. Also the link for the channel in the decription isnt working, its missing a "." at the end.

I mean, we can't expect everything to be perfect. We already have a game with the most accurate sword fighting ever put into a game with KCD 1, that's a lot already. For a video game, there's a lot of tutorials in it because it's so complex. They want to appeal to a large audience too, and the game is about more than just combat.

Very interesting video! I would like to have an armour, but the biggest challenges are not even another fighters, but my future wife. Sadly she does not support the armour thing :-((( Anyway, very well done criticism. I am not a sword master, but I noticed this issues concerning heavy armoured enemies.

Would be nice if they had an advanced knight skill tree with techniques specialised against full plated armoured enemies. And maybe they could implement just multiple fight modes/ stands. One for non armoured people and one for armoured people. Something like that. Half swording was a thing in one of the trailers, but they unfortunately never implemented

Do let us know how you feel about the armor system of Kingdom Come Deliverence! Especially how you layer them. For example, gambeson under chainmails and chainmail under the breastplate. Because in your video where you show us how you wear your armors, your pauldrons were connected to the gambeson and i was wondering if that’s something medieval knights used instead of the layering system that KCD uses. By the way, i was actually looking forward to you talk about kcd’s swordfighting! Thanks for the video :)

There is a major resurgance of HEMA and medieval combat interest in Czechia, which the game benefits from. I feel the game tried its best at both gamifying and portraying a relistic presentation of combat, but the need to gamify I feel did reduce the realism of general armored combat and it treated armored vs unarmored combat as the same, except that armor is treated as simply a larger healthbar in armored body areas.

You talk about the game as if it was Minecraft. The game has 3 types of damage, 4 layers and 20 spots for armor and it's not a "larger healthbar". That's not how it works.

I would recommend reading if you can find a translated version of a song called "Marko Kraljevic i Musa Kesedzija" (Marko Kraljevic and Musa Kesedzija" it is honestly so far the most realistic depiction of a fight between two armored opponents , they start by throwing spears at each other , then grabbing a mace and duking it out with that , then flanged mace then sabers then they start wrestling and barely bringing one and the other to the ground until one drives a dagger into another at the end, the song even describes how bloodied and sweaty they are at the end and how tired they got . It's honestly a masterpiece and I'm surprised that no one even knows about it

I would say that one of the biggest inaccuracies in this is the over-usage of the longsword in general. The one-handed sword was always the most popular sword throughout the entire Medieval period. Even during the late 15th century when the longsword was at its height of popularity, the one-handed arming sword was still the most commonly used type of sword. I would expect to see much more sword & buckler in this, but I'm not sure that they depict any at all.

Just curious. Would a strike from a sharp sword have any chance on severing the straps used to wear your armour? Or something else like a thrust and pull back towards yourself?

I think it's theoreticaly possible, but of course it never happend to me with blunt swords. Most armor parts use more than one strap to fix something and the straps are not exposed to cuts.

It would be nice if they added a button, such as pressing the analogue stick in combat to switch between a half-sword and regular grip of the longsword, and you'd have different combos/techniques available to you depending on which mode. More pommel, blunt, crossguard and thrusting strikes but less general defense due to having less of a reach to counteract weapons?

The helms look better in the new game, thought it was a shame how many helmets had sights that were far too big, also the lack of proper aventails on many of them. The knight Henry is squaring up against with the klappvisor (maybe based on the one in the Met museum, minus the onion top which I hope also features) and houppelande under his armour looks really cool. The cuirasses look to be higher and tighter too. I hope the jupons are also a better fit this time around too, need to be much tighter than the first game.

My thoughts on this subject is that if it was 100% realistic a single fight would last way too long for it to be enjoyable lol. The lack of half sword techniques I put down to Henry being unskilled with a sword, and therefore doesn't know how to do it effectively. I'm pretty sure we see half swording in the trailer for KCD2, so maybe that is now not an issue as Henry is more skilled. Great video as always

The armoured combat system is built around armour durability and a persons stamina, where damaged armour provides much less protection and anyone with good armour will not take any real damage from attacks, which I find very realistic, at least until their stamina is low, at which point their armour effectively disappears and you hit them for full damage. The player, when wearing full plate armour, can literally take 20 or 30 hits from enemies and only lose 10% of your health, so long as you space the hits out over enough time, but as soon as you get hit a few times in a row you'll get tired and die in the next 2 or 3 hits regardless of what armour your wearing. It's a flawed system, no doubt about it, but it obviously has a lot of very fun and realistic aspects to it, if they can somehow make better use of the fact that good armour makes people nearly unkillable and that tired enemies are a lot more vulnerable, without one undermining the other, they would have the basis for a realistic, skill based combat system.

Does the “blade part” of the sword actually play any role? What if we only make the tip of the sword sharpened, while the rest of the blade unsharpened, but thicker(harder to break plus potential blunt damage), will it be better for armored fight?

There is historical evidence for your idea, but yes it really helps in grappling to have a sharp blade and of course in battle against lower armored opponents.

I believe that treating all combat as unarmored wasn't an oversight but a deliberate game design decision. Quite a few arming sword perfect blocks and combos end with half swording aswell but yeah It is the best we get in video games yet it still lacks a lot. Wich by the looks of the secuel it apears to include a lot more halfswording, have you watched it yet? They even feature the morterstroke

@@dequitem it's in the in depth reveal, when they go into the combat changes, around min 08:05 happens pretty fast but you can see up close halfswording grapling, pushing the blade aside, going back in with a stab into the neck, and finishing with a murderstroke. Sick ass combination for sure!

it may be realistic but from the gameplay perspective it pisses me off when my opponent is SOMEHOW FUCKING BLOCKING AND OVER HEAD when i feint correctly and he just snaps his sword to block

Is it possible, that the game techniques would work better, if you presume that the armour is not hardened? I think that many of the sets vould even be just iron. Concidering this, could you bend the plates on limbs enough to imobilise joints? Aside from that, I was able to consistently target enemy hands with cuts and faces with points. Also I dont think it is just one thrust, but the first one would come from the opening you had the sword at, but thrusting into body the difference is not that big.

How you feel about physics based vr games like Blade and Sorcery? Watching this made me think about it, but short of experimental projects like exit suit, wouldn't give you the physical feedback. Still probably the most fun without a sparring partner.

I don’t have armor but a HEMA mate of mine does, so we did a match as if we both had armor, as far as video games go from the real thing….one is entertainment and the other is a martial art.

In reality, fighting a fully armoured knight with a sword demands completely different techniques then fighting a drunk peasant. In KCD, the same animations have to work for every opponents, no matter what they are wearing. The combat system would get way too complex if they would differenciate in that. However, they made blunt force weapons and stabs a lot more effective against plate armor, so I think in the scope of a video game, they did a pretty awesome job.

There is some different ways to approach to how you make some combat system "realistic" for example, I don't like the whole match your stance to block an attack since I feel that "blocking" is something far more instinctual. when staving of an attack you don't have time to think about where it's coming from, that stuff happens automatically in an instant. So do you match the realism of mechanics, or do you go for how accurately the "feel" is of your actions?

More of the feeling but I don't like the blocking system too. It has to be much easyer to block strikes. There should always be automatically blocks for the glowing star spike and the two around, so that you block 3 out of 5 automatically!

I think in number 2 we will see henry learn more about fighting plate armor. IF you think about it, most of the entire game you really only fight unarmored/ very lightly armored enemies like poor bandits. Which helps lend the struggle that Henry has been successful with these base moves and they just simply dont work against these big bad armored knights. I bet there is some time skip and hes learned a lot about fighting in plate armor at this point. I hope!

I love KCD, but always thought armour was far too prevalent for the combat system they implemented, playing the game it feels like only 1 in 100 enemies should have full plate and everyone else has a hauberk or its like, with lightly armoured opponents stuck using a gambeson, instead everyone and their mother has full plate or at least a brigandine, its so bad that any experienced player can get nearly full plate armour in the first hour of gameplay, turning the game into a one sided massacre until enemies get good enough stats and skills to fight back. The most fun I had in the game was when I was new to it and fought 1 or 2 enemies at a time where everyone, myself included has limited armour and attacks were lethal.

The quantity of armors is realistic/historical correct. Most soldiers and brigands du use armor, there are normaly no peasants without any protection in a war, but I was disappointed to how easy you get access to good armor and how boring armored fighting can be in the game.

@@dequitem Yes thank you, this is valuable context which furthers your point that the developers should have focused more on armoured fighting techniques, I was too focused on how the combat is impacted by the abundance of armour and forgot about how the reverse should also be true, I hope they overcome some of the issues you pointed out in their second game.

If you've played enough of this game you'll be able to take on armoured knights while "naked" with your bare fist in hardcore mode with all disabilities on. There comes a point where the simulation breaks down and the game becomes just like any other breakable game
