Will the DC Universe always be darker than the Marvel Universe? Hector Navarro dives into the comics to find out. Go to 1shotenergy.com/newrockstars for 10% off
As the DCU gets ready to officially launch next year, will they lean into a lighter, more comedic tone often associated with the MCU? Or will they continue their journey of exploring a darker story when it comes to comic book-based movies and series? With recent films such as the The Flash and Blue Beetle exploring the lighter side of the DC Universe, it could be a sign of things to come. Or maybe there’s a better comparison to be made directly from the comics. Hector Navarro is here to break down the epic 2003 Avengers/JLA comic crossover that included input from both Marvel and DC and explored some of the deeper and long-running themes of each universe. Is the DC Universe always doomed to be darker than the Marvel Universe?

The hugely successful DC animated universe was able to do all different types of stories. It was able to be dark and brooding, fun and comedic, dramatic and emotional, etc. Even their darkest shows like Batman had great comedic episodes.

DC does not have to be dark, It just does not have to be crap. Same applies for Marvel and any other movie. We have seen 50+ comic book movies and series in the last 20 years. We have seen almost anything. You want people to watch it, make it interesting and original. The time where people went to anything because it had superheroes in it is gone. It is time to acknowledge that MCU phases 1-3 was a ligtning in a bottle and will not happen again.

I think what actually set the tone was the Christopher Nolan Batman movies. These films, especially TDK, were incredibly successful critically and financially. I think Warner wanted to continue the dark gritty superhero tradition with the DCEU and simply hired a creative leader (Zach Snyder) that was aligned with that vision. But it was a mistake to think that the tone that worked for Batman would automatically translate to Superman, a character who is fundamentally a symbol of hope.

Just before clicking the play button, here is my answer to the question "DC must be dark ?" : NO, absolutely not. Some people tend to mistake "dark" for "serious" or "adult". If the CGI wasn't crappy AF and the film overcharged with totally useless fan service, The Flash would have been a very ok movie (but it's not, and if they had gone the Thomas Wayne route it would have been so much better... And don't need to go dark with this idea, just say in this universe Thomas is Batman, he is a different character, is has different methods, and voilà). Now, I'm clicking play ;-)

Great video and thank you for pointing out that each movie franchise mindlessly followed the template of its initial offering, instead of letting each hero have their own unique tone. I think that's a big part of why superhero fatigue has hit so many of us so hard ... it's not that we're tired of heroes in general, we're just tired of the predictability.

Unfortunately it seems that after Endgame Marvel has been employing writers and directors that aren't fans of the source material or comics books to make their films and shows so you get these bazaar artistic swings that aren't the least bit coherent or entertaining. Eternals being androids like beings merely muddied up Thanos' origin since he's an Eternal with a deviant gene. As for DC, it's always been too cheezy and too far from reality to ever be taken seriously. Except for Peacemaker and the Nolan and Reaves Batman films.

I think 3 major problems are: 1. the fanboys obsessed with grim and gritty BS which factored into the 1990s Dark Age, which then spawned more creators stuck in that mindset and who keep feeding into dark-obsessed fanboy hype, 2. Warner Bros and DC Comics editors and publishers relying on that hype to base their decisions on (including hack creators who get into editorial positions), and 3. WB hiring Zack Snyder who, while he may have his own distinct vision for film directing, regardless of whether you like his non-DC work or not (I admit I am not a fan but I can't deny his devotion to the craft), was the WORST choice of a visionary lens to project DC movies through. We needed Greg Berlanti or someone of that upbeat nature to begin with, not 300/Sucker Punch-making, Ayn Rand-loving Snyder.

I think both dark and lighthearted stories are needed for the success of storytelling. It balances everything out. But I think we don't understand what a dark story really is. Every good story explores thematically dark ideas and philosophies. The tone of a film should be appropriate. Whatever serves the story best for me!

Live action DC will have a film not do what the studio hoped at the box office and instead of digging down to the real issues it becomes well it must not have done well because it was not grim, dark, and gritty like a Batman movie. But comics and cartoons have been great when it's something like the dark knight teaming up with the big blue boy scout.

Because Batman sells well DC can't shake the whole "everything must be dark" mindset, which is really hurting them. If they bothered to flesh out more stuff they'd be in better standing but Marvel's MCU is going to be the end of them as a contender moviewise

I guess the main issue is due to over generalization, sometimes the one holds bigger success can overshadow other things that it takes time to realize. Like John Carpenter’s The Thing; more faithful to the source material and love letter to the previous adaptation yet nearly erased it. Or how when we hear Frankenstein, most would think of the monster rather the scientist.
