Were double bladed lightsabers better than regular lightsabers?
The double bladed lightsaber is one of the most iconic lightsaber designs. Not only does it look awesome, it is also shown to be highly effective, with Maul successfully defending against two Jedi for a prolonged period. But was the double bladed lightsaber actually any good? Well it really depends on what sort of double lightsaber you are talking about. Mauls saber possessed a long hilt, similar to a saber staff. But both in universe and out, the first double bladed lightsaber was first used by the infamously powerful sith lord, Exar Kun. The double bladed saber used by Exar differed to Mauls in both design and functionality; with Exar Kun's hilt being significantly shorter, just like a regular lightsaber.
Today we will take a look at whether the double bladed lightsaber was actually better than a regular saber. We will also be looking at the differences in double bladed lightsaber design, comparing Exar Kuns to Mauls in an attempt to try and find out which saber is the most effective.
The main advantage a wielder of a double bladed saber had over their opponents was the ability to overwhelm them with a barrage of fast paced attacks. This also held significant defensive advantages. The extra blade provided an extra barrier from opponents' undercuts or overhead swings, allowing it's wielder to parry and then attack in a very short space of time.
Wielders of double bladed lightsabers would be both better protected from attacks while also exerting far less energy blocking incoming lightsaber strikes. This is particularly true of the double bladed saber used by Maul. The wide grip of Maul's saber gave him the full power of both arms when defending against attackers, a significant advantage over both a regular saber and Exar kun's saber in a long and drawn out battle.
However, an advantage both Exar Kun and Maul's saber had over their Jedi opponents was the lack of familiarity with their double ended blade.
When Exar Kun first revealed his blade, few knew how to counter the quick pace of his attacks. Similarly, the double bladed saber was so rare by the time of Darth Maul's reveal that the Jedi were relatively unprepared to defend against it. The combined might of Qui-Gon and Obi Wan struggled to defeat Maul and some argue that it was only through Maul's arrogance and luck that Kenobi was able to defeat him.
However, Exar kun's shorter hilt was possibly more advantageous in this regard. The saber could be used as a single bladed saber before the second blade was then ignited, catching his opponents completely by surprise.
There were however, significant disadvantages to a double bladed lightsaber, particularly the longer hilted saber used by Maul. Unlike regular sabers, double bladed Lightsabers were extremely limited in their ability to thrust or swing; the core moves of many lightsaber forms. So while initially the double bladed saber may seem superior, upon a closer inspection it is clear that they had some pretty damning drawbacks.
However, that is not to say that double bladed sabers were inferior. In the hands of a form 7 master such as Darth Maul, the inability to thrust, Stab and swing could be made up for by a barrage of flips and power strikes.
In reality the double bladed saber was only advantageous in the hands of an aggressive dueller, in most cases a sith. However, the blade used by Exar Kun provided many of the advantages of a double bladed lightsaber while also allowing the user to benefit from the regular sabre setting.
The same is true of sabers such as Asajj Ventresses which allowed her to use it either as two blades or as a double bladed saber, making her a very versatile duellist.
Overall, the double bladed saber was limited, especially in the hands of an untrained user. However, in my opinion, with the right training or modifications, the double bladed saber could become a far more dangerous weapon than your standard lightsaber.

Only reason I would use a double bladed lightsaber is if I could turn it into a split saber, that way I could choose between single, double or dual wielding. 3 forms one weapon.

This is the fact with most double bladed lightsabers for example with mauls in his first engagement with Qui Gon Jin he attacked with only the single blade making it so the when he pulled out the double blade they were more shocked

For the younglings out there, you can’t imagine how mind-blowing it was to first see a double-bladed lightsaber back in ‘98. Outside of the EU, we’d only ever seen four lightsabers before: Obi-Wan’s, Vader’s, Luke’s RotJ, and the Youngling Slayer 9000. Maul’s saber was so simple, but so innovative!

Trying to think of other pre-Prequels stuff… we assumed the clones in the Clone Wars had been the villains, ‘cus cloning was considered freakish and unnatural in the days before Dolly the sheep. There was no Qui-Gon, since Obi-Wan called Yoda his master. We thought Anakin had fallen _in_ a pool of lava during the final duel with Kenobi, not just slipped near the edge and caught on fire, and of course we believed that after Luke was hidden on Tatooine, the not-yet-named Padme had lived a few years before Leia was adopted, since she talked about remembering her mother. Oh, and I was recently reminded that Owen Lars was theorized to the Obi-Wan’s brother!

I would want a double-bladed lightsaber specifically one that splits into two blades so i can dual wield and use the single blade as well. In fallen order i changed between the three different dueling stlyes.

Fun Fact: Maul's lightsaber was double-bladed because, while Maul's stuntman studied many weapons (actually training Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson to use their prop swords IIRC), he was a true master of the bo-staff. I am also a bo-staff user, so the "dueling lightsaber" (as in, toy that can actually sustain damage) that I ordered was a split-bladed saberstaff. Not just for the benefits of dual wielding, but also so that I could give one-half of the blade to my best friend who is also a Star Wars fanboy who lives in my neighborhood. And he was totally down, but then... COVID. And now he's engaged, so he's probably busy with wedding planning...

As a kid I always wanted fist mounted sabers, as in the same place Jango kept his flame thrower or like Baraka's blades from Mortal Kombat, has there ever been anything like that in the Star Wars Universe? I know Maris Brood used the tanja-esc lightsabers under her forearms.

If we’re talking about realistic lightsaber dueling then the double blade is better cus you can actually spin it effectively without opening up a huge weak spot, also you can throw it better plus if you don’t need the 2nd blade just turn it off, it’s always better to have the option.

Yes but where I think the double-bladed lightsaber really shines is in blaster bolt deflection. By spinning it like a windmill the wielder can a impenetrable fan of defence that will deflect any laser coming in it's direction. The nature of the the weapon is very well suited for blaster laser deflection

I wonder if it's theoretically possible to create a varient of the Duelsaber where you have one long staff like blade instead of two at each end, meaning that it can block anyone attempting to cut the hilt in half.

Double-bladed lightsabers are a battlefield polearm weapon. Polearms are by far the most effective melee weapons on the battlefield, yet in duels swords still reigned supreme historically. Claiming one is better than the other is like saying a Tank is better than a Fighter Jet. In most situations a saber staff has little use but in situations where battlefields are likely you would be glad you have one.

I own a Exar Kun-inspired staff saber from Saberforge. Been practicing with it for a couple of months now, and I can honestly say, I would never ever want to be on the business end of double-bladed saber in a duel. I feel like a nightmare just spinning the thing.

Most of the greatest duelist used a single saber. If you were truly skilled the amount of blades didn’t matter. That Starkiller SOB doesn’t count.

I duel myself with few of my friends and cause of my big heavy body i struggled with the acrobatics of lightsaber dueling but i taught myself a new ish type of dueling ,double bladed one handed lightsaber on my right hand and a single bladed lightsaber on my left to account for the lack of acrobatic abilities needed. and it is extremely difficult to even wield proficiently but its extremely overwhelming to my sparing partners so you can say im double wielding a double one handed saber and a one bladed lightsaber and i can say is that duelist in the real world know very well double bladed dueling and defending against it but my style is very new so i can see how jedi felt while fighting maul as for them its a new thing not even mentioned anywhere and in my opinion this is the best way not necessarily the fighting style but more of the lack of knowledge that make them lose . So my advice to anyone interested in dueling master all styles as much as you can but then make you own personal style that is tailored to your abilities and believe me once you make your own you can feel how much flaud other styles are and can use them against thier users

I wouldn’t object to using one, although I would probably mainly fight with a single blade anyway. I like the leverage and power that comes with a longer hilt like Maul’s but I don’t like it’s vulnerability. I think I’d prefer a smaller hilt like Exar Kun’s or even Darth Zannah’s (who’s hilt was only slightly longer than a standard lightsaber hilt). Keeping the secondary blade in reserve could provide a useful surprise tactic in combat.

I would carry one shoto lightsaber and one standard light saber, much like Ahsoka in Clone Wars. Her off-hand saber was slightly shorter than her main.

Using both form 2 and 5 seems to be the way to get the most out of the saber. The combination's mechanical simplicity and workman-like nature isnt that flashy, but treating the saber as a poleaxe/svardstaff can give you both fine control and power blows to draw out counters.

To me, I think Fallen Order had the right idea, as Cal initially wields his late Master's damaged double blade as a single bladed lightsaber before acquiring components to fix it (it is possible to get it early on Dathomir which I think is a nod to Maul & Ventress' connection to the planet, as well as a reward for players willing to go to Dathomir! Otherwise, it can be obtained in Cordova's workshop, during which Cal finds Cordova's old lightsaber using its emitter to restore as the second blade emitter was damaged during Order 66! As a result, Cal had the best of both worlds & could switch between them! I personally think Cal himself was able to adapt to the style due to his Force Echo ability, allowing him to tap into the Force Echo of his late mentor's lightsaber, as he initially trained with a single blade! Cal's split Saber is also a good idea as it allows three styles in one, single wield, double-bladed, & dual wield (though unfortunately the game treats dual blades as more of a special attack rather than a separate style, though hopefully they will rectify it in the sequel)!

Fun fact, if you watch Pong Krell's fight scenes. He only uses his main arms to fight with his saberstaffs. So while it may seem to use all four, he's actually just using the main two. This guy is a madlad

I would go for a double Bladed lightsabers that can split into 2 separate sabers, this decrease the risk of me being disarmed if the hilt was slices down the middle or one of the hilts was damaged.

In one of the books Maul said one of the reasons he chose a double blade is because very few Jedi knew how to deal with one.

i would argue the longer hilt of the double sided saber is better even when only using one blade, you have better leverage with a longer hilt which means more control and more power from strikes, it also gives you more reach since you have more options for hand placement choking up or down on the hilt and you have more reach when wielding it with two hands as apposed to a standard saber hilt which is much shorter. all in all it can do everything a single bladed saber can do and more plus its the perfect weapon for the infamous Tràkata saber form.

I take the double bladed design of Cal Ketsus after he got his new cyber crystal. At least you could combine and unattach two normal lightsabers into one double bladed saber.

Part of me wants two double bladed lightsabers Exar Kun sabers for each hand. I can turn one blade on for each to dual wield a single blade, then i can activate the second blades for both when surrounded. Completely unrealistic but it’d be cool as hell.

Double bladed lightsabers as depicted in most Star Wars content are effectively useless - the hilt is too short, meaning your hands are too close together and your range of motion and leverage is incredibly limited. Anyone who has trained with a bo in Japanese martial arts or a quartstaff in HEMA will tell you that for a strong grip you need to keep your hands 2-3 feet apart (depending on the length of the weapon, your wing span, etc). To my knowledge we’ve never seen a double bladed lightsaber in canon or the EU with a long enough hilt to achieve that. Now if you made a much longer hilt out of something like cortosis or beskar, say 4 feet long, that could convert between having a full size blade on one end or two 2 ft long blades coming from both ends what you’d essentially have is a lightsaber that can convert between a naginata and staff, which would be incredibly versatile and awesome as hell

Taking into consideration real life sword tactics, it becomes a very good stabbing weapon. Using an over the shoulder grip you can stab and parry.

A double bladed lightsaber is too limited in range of motion and type of attacks. It is far more niche than a single bladed saber. A sniper rifle rifle won't help you indoors, and a pistol isn't going to help you beyond 50 yards. Unless you always attack and never defend, a double blade is just too impractical.

Wonder, how good the weapon would be, if it would be wealded like a actually spear. And not like a limited 2 sides sword. It would have more reach and would be better for trusting attacks. By having a short light blade at the end of the staff is it possible, to cut with both ends. Like, with this sword. But, the weakness would probally be the long staff of the spear itself. Because it is so long would it be at high risk to be cutted by a other blade (ok, the reach advangte should balance it). The spear would need cortosis metal (or how it is spelled) for beeing harder to be cutted. A other disadvangte would probally be the ability to blockade blaster shoots. It is wealded by a other way and is in that regard probally to long, where the shorter sword would be better wealded. And, all fighting stil are based on sword fights. The spear user would need to adjiust the fighting stil than

I feel like as one of the few main black characters in stars it always gave me someone I could see myself in when I was younger look up to. he is portrayed as powerful, intelligent and has a dark side that that he controls with discipline. #giveaway #myfirstsaber #macewindu.

i see double bladed lightsaber as being akin to playing bass. High skill floor, high skill ceiling. Easy to pick up, very difficult to master and use effectively.

Personally I’d have a Doublebladed lightsaber that could be used as a single and split much like Ventress so I’d always have options, I’d be using Form 3 and focus on tiring my opponent out. Imo that’s one of the more underrated strategies with the doublebladed lightsaber

There is nothing better than classic lightsaber. Double bladed are bad in thin spaces, big handle are more vulnerable, to use second blade you should rotate yourself or saber which mean, that you will be tired sooner. In fact, probably one plus they need to be mentioned - lesser time for new strike, because when first blade strike, second in ready position. But still, you need to be able to use second blade. Kaz’eem said, that one of the biggest advantages of DB sword is that there are not so many people who used them, so you feel confused against it. Two blades in each hand - need to practice more, because you should spend time to be able to use both hand simultaneously or at least in very equal mastery, so you better to be ambidextrous. Second thing - muscle. Remember how Anakin wins over Assage in that old Clone Wars movies? Right, just push her away with powerful strikes, so, as two sword practitioner each of your arm must be bulky enough too handle a strike from an opponent with two hands on grip. In some situation, probably be good to have a shoto-saber, or short lightsaber to defensive purpose in unusual situations like fighting against a whip. But still - classic on bladed lightsaber are the most universal solution.
