Some people believe the driving test in Great Britain is rigged and that driving examiners can only pass a certain number of people. In this video I give my opinion on whether or not this is true and I explain why driving examiners are going on strike in 2022 and 2023.

To anyone who is feeling down and desperately trying to pass. It’s not your fault, we are in unprecedented, messed up times. My test was cancelled on and off for 2 years. I took out a CBT and rode around on a moped for a bit (to keep my road sense during lockdowns etc.) Finally I got a chance to take my test. That day my instructor struggled to get fuel (huge queues stretching across all the roads) examiners only really had one route they could give a candidate so they didn’t get stuck! My examiner was a total dragon screamed at me and failed me 😢 no witnesses either due to Covid regulations. Then my instructor started messing me around because the test centres were writing down the instructors numbers and triggering re-examinations for them of a candidate failed. He didn’t want to risk it. I bought a banger, begged my friends to sit with me to practice, had to book a test in Scotland and transfer it over to south England using various apps to even get back on the system. I passed! The examiner was reasonable this time around. Please keep trying. Don’t dwell on it just keep going and scramble your way towards your goal. You are not alone and you can do this!

I failed a test recently during the sat nav portion of driving. I was told to turn right in 500m on a 30mph dual carriageway. I did my checks and moved to the right hand land ready to turn right at the lights ahead. At the end of the test I was told I failed for moving to the right lane too early and having a car in the left lane over (under) take me. I was doing the speed limit but seemingly failed because someone else was doing 40mph. When I asked the examiner if I'd have still failed if someone didn't overtake me he left the car. So some definitely find really harsh reasons to give out those serious driving error marks.

It really annoys me when examiners fail a pupil for getting in the right lane too early to turn right. When I'm driving I'll often do it 0.5 miles back if possible because I think it's safer to be prepared. It's not your responsibility if someone wants to break the speed limit. Examiners should not be blaming pupils for other people's illegal driving. However as I was not there I can't really comment on your fail, but I know it's happened to my pupils.

I had the most amazing examiner on my first test, a really great guy. Sadly I failed due to an error on my half from nervousness and I fully acknowledged and accepted it. Only had 2 minors and 1 major, technically had 2 majors, but he didn't mark the second one, as I was talking to him and he admitted he distracted me by accident and it happened rather suddenly (it wasn't dangerous). I have my next test this month ( thankfully not on a strike day) and I will be honest, your videos have been a great asset to my continued learning. The simple fact is this entire system is breaking apart. One has to wait for minimum months just to appear in a test and if he fails, it takes minimum 1 year or even more just to get a driving license. What on earth they have made the entire thing so complex and they have no solution to that? And now their very employees are going to strike? What else?

On my second attempt I received one serious fault, being central when turning right out of a one way road. However on my first attempt at the same centre and the same turning I did the same thing and did not recieve a serious fault for it, hence why I repeated it thinking it fine on my second attempt. This infuriated me for weeks until my third attempt when I finally pass. But I do believe it is mostly down to the examiners moods on the day. I drove horribly in my 3rd but passed, and the examiner was a really nice guy, was chatting and made me feel at ease. The first two... Well, those words aren't to be typed here.

Even though I like these videos I passed my test more than 10 years ago and even though it's nice to pass it's better to try and remember to be safe and responsible on the road when you are driving on your own with a full licence as this in my opinion is more dangerous as inexperienced drivers who never drove fast during their learning (for obvious reasons) may be tempted to drive more dangerously especially younger drivers. So my advice is take the milestone of passing into your driving life and continue to be cautious as you build your experience on the road and well done.

Here in Hungary the overall corruption rate is so high that a lot of driving tests are purposely rigged only for the sole purpose so they can rip you off to take extra hours and / or tests. Most of them are only looking for the opportunity to turn minors into majors. And it's a well-known case here, just no one does anything about it.....

Good video thanks for posting. I'm an instructor of 6 years, and I've sat through dozens of dozens of tests. If it's true that tests are rigged, then I would have witnessed plenty of fails which should have been a pass. I tell you that not once have I disagreed with a test fail. Yes there are occasions where some picky examiners might award a few more minor driver faults than other examiners, but when it comes to the stuff of serious or dangerous faults they have been spot on every time. I agree about test fees. Should have been raised a long time ago. In fact I think the current £62 driving test fee is too affordable to fail so too many insufficiently prepared people repeatedly go into it just winging it.... not investing that money in training for a first time pass, instead rolling the dice for a pass until they think they can roll a 6. It doesn't work like that and never will. Get yourself properly trained into what is expected of you come the test and make sure you understand 100% how it's scored.

£62 is still expensive especially for most people that hire their instructors car for an hour on top of that to nearly a £100. £100 to pass a driving test. Let alone the people that fail.

Had my first test today, failed with 3 minors and one major. The major was because i was driving through a residential road which had a bend coming up to the right, i moved into the middle of the road as there was a parked car in the left lane and the road was clear, apparently i was somehow on the right side of the road and the examiner grabbed my steering wheel (which i don’t believe he needed to there wasn’t any danger) this was the reason as to why i failed. Personally i think i should’ve passed

I failed my test today with 2 minors and 1 major. My "major fault" was by staying in the right hand lane on a 700 meter dual carriageway. There was nobody else on the road, I didn't cause and issue for anyone and I was turning right at the end of the carriageway. I think it was extremely harsh for them to give me a major but I guess it's whatever. The instructor clearly wasn't willing to let me pass.

It’s a myth that examiners have a pass rate. They don’t need to. If you think about it the uk driving test is difficult to pass because it’s strict. The pass rate around the uk on average around 42%. It’s easy to fail the test because Learners get nervous. Learners make mistakes at junctions. getting a major fault is easy. Learners want to pass as quickly as possible without having enough lessons. There is so much traffic on the roads and everyone is in a rush. So you can see why the pass rate is low.

When I had my first driving test I was way more ready, then my second attempt, but the examiner gave me confusing instructions and I got confused and panicked, stopped at the side of the road, he yelled at me for impeding traffic and asked me to switch seats, after that I booked my next exam (3months later), drove a couple of times with my mom before the test and the examiner was nice, made jokes and gave very clear instructions, I was much worse of a driver for example:couple of very rough gear changes, a roundabout which I manouvered at almost 30mph and I didn't see one speed zone end, but I lied that I saw the school and was worried about safety driving the speed limit 😉, I passed though so who cares

Although it’s “safe” and people do it for allowing cars to go through very narrow roads, it’s not “DVLA safe”. It’s its own standard of driving, once you know it, you follow it. But, it all depends on what happens during your surroundings that be make or break the test and here is where examiners’ judgment comes into play.

@Tomogochi the Highway Code tells you not to park on the pavement unless explicitly allowed by signage or markings. The driving test is (at its purest) a test of your ability to drive to and apply the Highway Code, so you failed for a flagrant rule violation. It sucks, but it goes to show how important it is to actually study the rules and get plenty of practise in (at least partly with an instructor) to avoid silly fails like that.

I think, dvla is more interested in help as many learners to pass their driving test. Mostly, because, more new drivers go, more vehicles is selling on the market and more road tax in a year is being paid. Helps the economy of the country. Also, for a new driver who did pass the driving licence, is only a matter of time for this driver can get more experience with driving.

I were always told before my test that i needed to not worry. If my instructor thinks i'm test ready then the examiner will use that and help me pass. Examiners know the stress and nerves their learners will be going through, they just aren't there to fail people when it isn't needed. It's just not ethical. So if you fail, it's probably because you yourself did. For the majority of examiners, they are good people.

Failed my driving test today and pretty frustrated ⁷as been waiting since June last year for this test I booked my test May last year but had to wait till September because that was the only availability but after that I found out I had cancer and then had to cancel that test cause it was too soon after surgery. So rescheduled the next available appointment which was today. I was extremely nervous and was falling apart but finally was just starting to relax after following the satnav for 10 minutes. The driving examiner suddenly asked me to park on the left in a particular space and it completely threw me off cause I didn't think he gave me enough time for that particular spot and thought if I did it I would block someone's drive. I said I can park behind the vehicle and started indicating and he completely lost his cool and said he needed me to park in that particular space and had to take a deep breath to compose himself and said never mind just keep driving when he realised he had crossed a line. I was then thinking I must of really anoid this guy like what the hell was that and was thinking I've definitely failed this test. Well because of this distraction I left the indicator on and failed the test. No other available tests and my theory certificate runs out in May. I've been driving for 2 years ffs. If I fail again that's another 6 months.... I hope I don't get him on my next test as I have no Idea why he got so angry and I still can't get my head around it.

Learning how to drive is extremely expensive already. Increasing the cost of the test will make it even more inaccessible to low income people like myself where the cost is already a massive hurdle. This is a government organisation and the government has plenty money to increase the pay of workers, the fault is in tory govt cuts to budgets costing millions across the board not learner drivers. Union strikes benefit the working class and should show solidarity with all of them, not increasing the wealth of some to the detriment of others.

I knew it was safe and I was checking and it was harsh to fail me lol. I even bantered this girl I know. The DVSA publish pass rates for each centre; and they're all over the place. Some are really high and some are really low. It seems the most significant factor is demographics. Generally people in wealthier areas fare better. That's down to being able to afford lessons, and having access to a family car they can take additional practice in. That's much more significant than the actual test routes. So probably not worth booking a test on the Scillies just to avoid roundabouts.

best comment on here, taking driving test and goign to driving school cost money and time and effort, familys/people who have a car they can practice in increases their chance to pass dramatically, most of it is muscle memory and insticts. I have noticed tests are often cancelled due to strike or bad weather(which is understandable)despite long wait caused by backlog. However it should be compromised by giving alternative slots. Why don't they run tests on sunday? Examiners take a day off in a week day due to cancellation so they should work on sunday if weather is permitted to run tests. This is how it works in other fields. They can't have a day off due to bad weather and still weekend off? ha ha very nice job? I think it's only possible because they are civil servants, otherwise it's not acceptable in private sectors...

the exams in the uk are dirt cheap compared to the netherlands. A practical driving test is about 250-300 euros (200+ pounds). theory test is comparable, which makes sense because it is litterally a digital test (wich you take at a dedicated centre, not at home btw).

Probably, you don't have to have professional lessons with an instructor? Not very difficult to pass? A driving lesson in UK costs £30-40/hour. DVLA advises to have at least 45 hours (this is average, might need more lessons for a manual car). A driving practical test in UK is not easy, so some people have lots of practice with a family car then have around 10 hours lessons with an instructor just prior to the test. This is the cheapest way to learn to drive but takes a long time to get a license...

How are people even getting tests? I've been trying for over a year to get one.

They do become available, you have to keep checking though. People cancel and then their slot appears.

I wish they would put the examiners on overtime to get through the massive backlog. Especially during the summer when it’s light so late in the day.

They have been doing a lot of over time for a while now. The queue is long and it will take a long time to reduce it.

@@ConquerDriving I’m surprised they only do tests later than 15:00-ish once a week at my centre. Doesn’t seem like much overtime but maybe there isn’t many ppl

If anything, there's more people on the road who have somehow passed their test. As somebody who worked through the pandemic; I'm seeing a lot of new drivers on the road; I was new once, but the thing I hate the most about people who are driving a 1.5 tonnes of mass at up to 100mph is the arrogance/hubris some of them have. When I passed in 05, a small car seems to be almost twice as heavy, but now for whatever reason it's normal to drive down a country road at 60 when it's -3 outside. This is something new drivers haven't had to experience the last couple of years, they don't know what they're dealing with; the worst is experienced drivers who have lost all pride in their driving. The BMW driver running out of indicator oil is no longer just for BMWs. I guess our simple government doesn't care about the fact that people who passed their test just before covid as well as all non essential workers drove for a dozen of times in a year. In Coventry, where I live I see a legit drop in driving care and attention. I could go on but nothing will change, I'll have to get used to it and I'm not perfect either.
