The Kawasaki KLR 650 is one of the most reliable and longest-lasting motorcycles of all time. It's been around for decades nearly unchanged and many, many riders have owned, ridden, and loved them. As a smaller adventure bike (or bigger dual sport, depending on your perspective), the KLR 650 is a bike that many people consider for their first off road motorcycle or even their first bike overall, but is the Kawasaki KLR 650 a good first motorcycle? Is the KLR 650 good for beginners? Can a new rider handle the power and majesty of this stalwart of the off road motorcycle scene?
The answer is complicated, but overall, whether or not the Kawasaki KLR 650 is a good first bike comes down to whether or not a rider is comfortable with two things: the seat height and the weight of the bike. If you're a rider who is comfortable with a little bit taller bike or comfortable learning to be comfortable on a taller bike, then the Kawasaki KLR 650 is a potential good first bike for you.
The KLR is a bike that is easy to ride in terms of power delivery, is super capable, and will take you literally anywhere you want to go. It's a very versatile motorcycle that'll last you forever. So if you're looking for a good first motorcycle for beginners but want a bike that you won't outgrow quickly, the Kawasaki KLR 650 is an excellent first bike to choose.

I'm a really short rider (5'6). For years I avoided adv bikes because of bikes that are heavy and have a high seat. Finally I broke down and got myself a '89 Honda AT and never looked back. These days I wouldn't think twice about getting on a larger bike I would just hop on. But for a new rider you're right a larger and heavier bike can be intimidating, and being comfortable on your bike is key in my opinion. I think we as experienced riders often take for granted how riding is second nature to us. Many people will be coming into the hobby and may not even understand basics of bike riding such as shifting or counterturning let alone which seat height to consider, center of gravity, and weight. I think for any person their first bike (adv or otherwise) should be one that is forgiving, light, with a low center and easy to pick up, because you're going to drop it, everyone does.

I have a KLR 650 and I love it. I had modded road bikes and sport bikes that could tour @130 mph or more but were cammy and horrible to commute on back in the early to mid 80s. In 2015 I had an urge to buy another bike and looked at scooters, Honda CT90s, learner bikes, etc. and then had 2 beers. I remembered I liked riding, camping, fishing and photography and decided I needed a dual sport machine that I could put dual purpose tyres on. It had to be at least 500 cc and have a decent sized fuel tank and maybe a rack as standard. The only bike that ticked all those boxes was the KLR. I bought one. I had a trip of about 120km to ride home and I learned that the KLR had the tractor factor within 10 mins. I did not have to rev the hell out of the bike to ride home. It was easy on the fuel even though it was brand new. Before anyone goes off, I hit KZfaq videos, forums and other stuff before my purchase. In my younger days I was almost 6'2" but heavy work has compressed my spine so that at times I feel like I am 2'6". Never the less, I can flat foot the KLR when stopped. My current KLR is a 2018 model and there are tons of after market parts to customize your KLR to suit your needs. Yes, I have some on my KLR. As a first bike? Yes! Would I buy a 2022 model with ABS? Yes! Besides, here in Australia it is mandatory for ABS on both wheels for bikes. But I still want ABS anyway.

I'm on a '21 KLX230 that I got last month, it's at about 1,500 miles. It's the perfect lightweight learning tool, which is why I bought it. Low power (forgiving) but still zippy. Nice torquey lower gears. Lots of ground clearance, EFI, 6th gear for cruising, air cooled, ABS that doesn't suck off-road, at least for my skill level. The basic suspension is great since I don't weigh a lot. Getting the feel for slip even on gravel roads is such a blast. BTW I'm also in the valley if you want to go cruising. Can't wait for spring!

So true about intimidating height. Really great points. Bought my first bike, chose the KLR over the DR650 for the larger fuel tank. Phoned the dealer up, chose the orange 2011, they were like..."Um...ok. We usually don't order bikes for people over the phone, but you sound serious." Five days later I went and picked it up. Unloaded it, and was immediately...wtf, this is pretty tall😆 Hadn't even seen either bike in person before. I'm 5'8" 32 inseam, but stuck with it even after the dealership suggested they could install shorter dog bones. Just rode it for that first year, with some stopped or slow crashes, but learned to get up on the pegs as soon as I started moving. Slowly getting better on the enormous amount of old roads and trails here, it wasn't as intimidating, and with MX boots could touch reasonably. And installed longer links, larger pegs. Stiffer rear spring increased the height a bit more and replacing a bunch of stuff over the years to make it more trail friendly. The fuel range has come in very handy. Now Pebbles is awaiting a possible 685 kit. She's a bit thirsty now😄Has taken me to 8 states 4 of which I've done twice, and 8 provinces, and all kinds of memories. 9 years of joy, she doesn't owe me anything.✌😌 The only thing I would have done differently, is buy knee/shin guards with the boots.

I recently bought the 22’ KLR adventure. I was looking to get back into riding, and given my new surroundings this style of bike really drew me in. I now live out in the boonies so a dual-sport seems like a no brainer. Way different than my previous (and only other) bike, a CBR 929. My midlife crisis has abated, and now I just want to take things slow, and enjoy both the bike, and the world around me. Loving it so far, even if she did dump me in a wet clay tractor rut! Lol! Hi Dork, Your channel is awesome. I love the Nintendo and Wayne’s World intro and coda. You’re a natural on camera and your advice is honest and accurate. Your review of the XLX230 caused me to buy one after I had written the bike off as a toy. It’s not a toy and I’m really happy with it, so thank you. I’m not sure if anyone else has this feeling, but in your intro you say “I want to be your internet riding buddy,” and for some reason that sounds pervy to me. As a substitute maybe consider “I am your internet riding buddy.” It’s a small thing but it really stood out to me when I was new to your channel. Anyway, all the best to you and the growth of your channel. You’re awesome and I know yours will soon be one of the top ADV channels on KZfaq. Warm regards

Very well presented and a fair assessment. I owned my 2004 KLR 1 year, 7,200 miles exploring north of Seattle. Almost no gravel within an hour of home, I changed to a V-strom650. It's a better bike on road and 2up. 3 years on that led me to my Super Tenere, even better on road. The KLR was the perfect bike to discover where and how I ride. Thanks for welcoming folks to our community Ben, you're doing a great job! *still no gravel nearby, but I'm currently obsessed with the DRZ400.

I've got a 2008 KLR-650, it was my first dual-sport, first off-road experience, and I agree with just about everything said in the video. I absolutely love that bike! I've done the Smokey Mountain 500 on it, and about 75% of the MABDR. I'm really sad that I have to sell the KLR now, and the reason is also touched on: speed. The KLR just doesn't do well on the highway. 65mph is pushing it, 70 is really pushing it. If you already live nearby great trails, that's not an issue. But the rides I want to do require lots of highway time just to get there. The KLR is just not good for the US interstate. Otherwise, it's fantastic in just about every way. Thanks for the great video!

Had a KLR Tengai before kids, have ridden sports and touring bikes, getting back into bikes again, went to pick up my paid for 2022 Adventure and the dealer didn't want to give it to me. Tried to sell me a KTM 390. Yep I'm 5"6' and can get half a foot down but it is just physics, balance and as you say confidence. I think your impressions of the KLR are on point. It’s kind of a great forever bike. Not the first bike but it’s something you can keep forever and if you have multiple bikes, I said keep your KLR if your Africa twin brakes you’ve got a back up if you crash one you’ve got a back up I’ve got a commuter and I love bikes like the KTM 890 adventure but it’s a bike I would sell early without a lot of miles on it to keep its value so I would save that for a specific ride on to rain at suit of four but just cruising around on the weekend with nothing particular in mind can I put those miles on the Kelaart. I’ve been riding and fantasizing about bikes to buy for 30 years and whenever I get fired up about it and start looking at everything new out there, the killer is always in that mix and has been for decades. I think it’s just a bike that is a great all-around choice and some thing that you would keep forever even if you had other bikes. If somebody was going to buy me a new bike right now I would probably go for the Africa twin but if I was spending my own money I would probably just get the KLR as well, That durability is of ownership simplicity, that goes along way in my book, you have to really abuse a KLR2 have it broken or not ready to go. If somebody says hey let’s drive to the top of Alaska this summer if you have a kale are you just say yes and you change the oil make sure your tires are good and you go, if you’ve got a KTM or some of the more modern fancy bikes you have to worry about your service intervals end will probably have to do a lot of prep work to get it ready because they need so much attention and maintenance. You don’t really have to think about it with a KLR. If you’re tall enough for the seat height, it’s just a great easy bike that sort of does it all pretty well and any problems it does have have already been solved and are really easy to find and figure out. It’s still kind of a bike I want most even with its imperfections. Lol. There are definitely better performers and if I was going to go out for a couple days there are other bikes I would probably choose but just to own it and have it’s just too practical and reliable not to want it

@@sissydreams7494 yeah wanting a dual sport out of a midsized adventure bike is something you have to work to make happen. The 2022 KLR650 adventure is my first bike of this type. I just clocked 1000 k's on mine. I'm 5 foot 6 and had to get the lowering kit installed to feel comfortable on those dirt roads, mainly for those unexpected moments. I live in far north Australia and this bike doesn't mind the heat, but for the rider, this bike is HOT, I mean it really cooks your goods when riding it. This really is a down side as winter here doesn't exist. The other thing I don't like about this bike is the lack of power to get the front up when riding through Sandy creek crossings, it just seems to always want to bog the front down. All in all, it's a pretty good bike. It's allowed me to go where my cruiser can't and it's easy to ride.

The KLR650 is my 2nd bike (3 yrs experience). I would never recommend it for beginners, purely due to seat height. But my idiot dealer also adjusted the throttle to maximum freeplay (I had never needed to adjust throttle cables in my life and didn't know how). As I was pulling out of the lot into 45+ mph traffic, the damn thing stalled, and I barely tiptoed backwards off the street onto the lot before oncoming cars could wreck my new purchase. My 1st was an Indian Scout, 100 lb heavier, with >2x the horsepower, and its seat is 9 inches lower. Never had a problem controlling the power. I've also never dropped it, but I have dropped the KLR already -- getting off the bike, I failed to extend the kickstand fully before leaning, and due to the height, I couldn't save it from falling. All this is to say, IMO, you're overestimating throttle control & underestimating seat height as difficulties for beginners.

Agree 100% with everything. The KLR being tall and heavy ... for sure the biggest concerns for new riders. Can't do much about the weight but practice and patience! There are options for ride height, Corbin makes a step seat that lowers the seat height, and several companies make lowering links. Although other modifications are needed using the lowering links and you lose ground clearance, it is a viable option.

My 2012 KLR is my first and only bike so Yes it can be a first bike. It does look big but once seated not so much. Weight can be surprising, especially when you come to a stop and that full gas tank gets a chance to lean a bit. I'm 6' 2" so seat height not such an issue. I put on lower pegs and I just ordered a new Tall Seat kit because sitting I still need a bit more leg room. Back to weight, I practiced pick ups at the house because in the woods, as a new rider, you need to be able to do it. I'm ok with the power and you need to work with momentum in sand and deep water. My bike came with a 16t front sprocket, ok on the road but I went back to 15T for the woods. Like many have said, I have been able to get through and out of bad, new rider situations.

I don’t know why, really, because I probably won’t own any of them, but I think it would be interesting. If I had a 30” inseam instead of 28”, there’s probably not a bike I wouldn’t ride, but 28” makes some bikes pretty difficult.

Good video topic. I think it’s may be a good second bike but I think it’s a little big for a first bike. My favorite for a good beginners bike depends on the person size. I think something like a TW 200 is about perfect. But if you’re talking about a 4 foot 1189 pound female he probably wants something more like the trail 125 or a TW 200 but if you’re talking about a full grown 6 foot three man who is athletic, then a kale are 650 might not be a horrible option. Generally I would say it’s still a little big for a brand new rider if you’re coming off of dirt bikes or something like that it would be fine but I still think something smaller lighter that suits you lower to the ground is probably a better option, as a general suggestion I think the TW 200 is a pretty good option for most people. I will suggest people find something like that, especially with newer bikes if you’re talking about old are used bikes something like an old XL 200 or 250 or even the 185 might be good but are used TW 200 you can get for fairly cheap it’s tough you’re probably not gonna destroy it and you’ll outgrow it soon probably but you’re gonna be able to sell it for about what you paid for it usually. A kale are used is good for that reason but I do think it’s a bit big. Hi say a small dual sport something tough low to the ground. Optimally I would say something like a 1975 Honda XL 250 or even the 350. Nice and low very simple basic bikes to learn the fundamentals on and somethings still cool enough to keep around. Being that old they’re a little hard to find so that’s gonna be an issue. I always come back to the TW 200 it’s out there you can grab one you can get one at an OK price and it’s tough simple and when you outgrow it it will be easy to sell.

You need to revisit the KTM 390 Adventure. You made a very cursory review of that bike. There are foot pegs you can get (black dog cycle works) that are level and also drop 1/2 inch. Check out other peoples’ reviews of that bike where they do extreme off reading with it, especially in Australia. I don’t think you gave that bike a fair shake. KLR is great for some, but the 390 Adventure is a great competitor. It’s more manageable than the KLR for many, and just about as capable. A better choice as an entry level adv for many. Also check out the the 2022 Honda CB500X that has inverted forks and dual front discs. Both with a lower seat height than the klr. Versys-x is also a good entry level adv.

I think worrying about damaging the plastic and the weight would be the biggest obstacles for a beginning rider. I think the sub 300cc , CRF, KLR, and XT group of bikes is the right spot for adult beginners to start. Another place to start if you are not afraid to turn wrenches is to buy an older XL/Dr/Klr or Klx they can be had for 1/2 the price of current bikes and can be found with less than 5K miles.

The definitive answer to whether the KLR650 is a good beginner bike is: it depends. It's an excellent machine. There is a reason they've been around for over 30 years. If you are inseam challenged, or if you plan on spending a fair amount of time trail riding, then no, it's not a good beginner bike. With appropriate tires, it's capable off road, but it's heavy, with such a high center of gravity, and it is a real handful on any challenging bit of trail. But if you're looking to get into more road oriented adventure riding, then it is an excellent choice to learn on. Mainly because it's cheap, has a huge array of aftermarket products available, and mechanically, it's a bulletproof tank.

I have to disagree with it being an excellent beginner's bike. Dork made some excellent points in regards to power delivery, simplicity, and capability. But, it is a tough bike to learn to ride off-road, and even on the street. When I was a kid, my uncle owned a Honda motorcycle dealership, so I grew up on dirt bikes. I had tons of fun in the Idaho woods on dirt bikes. Then I grew up and was more into muscle cars than motorcycles. Still, I flirted with a few street bikes over the years such as an `82 Yamaha Eleven Special, a stripped `76 Gold Wing, and a `94 Harley Road King. All of them were a blast. I bought a `94 HD Road King a few months ago and love it, when it runs. I bought a new 2022 KLR 650 for commuting to work and exploring the woods. It is the first bike I have owned that truly scares me. I am 6'2" and can sit flat-footed on it no problem. It is fun to ride around town. But it is extremely top heavy and seems to want to tip over as much as possible. I admit that I have not ridden bikes for many years, but my Road King feels stable and comfortable while the KLR feels twitchy and buzzy and awful. I have laid it over twice in 200 miles. Never done that on any bike before. First time was going up a greasy, muddy farm road to an old homestead site. Bike barely made it. Parked and got off and shot a video, then tried to get back on while on a muddy incline and it flopped right over. The second time was on pavement. On a group ride and pulled over on the side of the road on a hill and went to pull out on the main drag and hit some loose gravel and the bike flopped over before I knew what was going on. Yesterday, I rode into town on a rural highway with some moderate wind gusts and I could barely keep it in my lane. I have learned to NEVER fill the 6-gallon tank. All that weight up high makes the KLR very unstable. Second, I have learned that tire pressure is critical in road manners. Keep it around 30 or so. Third, riding position also plays a critical role in how the bike feels. You cannot lean back and relax like on a cruiser. Too much weight on the rear wheel makes the handling twitchy. Squeeze your knees on the tank and lean forward and it handles fairly well in the twisties. In summary, the 2022 KLR is a very capable bike in the right hands. It is the proverbial Jack of all trades, but master of none. I have new 80/20 tires ready to install before I try going off-road again, and hoping they will make it somewhat capable in the dirt.

Hm, I don't know. Myself, I made the biggest mistake a beginner can make - I bought my first bike for its looks. Living in Germany, I took my license at the age of 25. Never ridden something motorized before, but always wanted to. Loving the looks of a Yamaha XT 600 E, I got it. Without even sitting on it. Everything was okay as long as I was driving. Manouvering around - not so much. Always was in fear of dropping it due to the high center of gravity and had to ask my husband to do it for me (same height as I, but started riding motorized two wheel vehicles from the age of 16. Also had an XT 600, and zero problems. Oh well.). I always found it intimidating. My shop tried as best as they could to lower it. It helped a bit. But as soon as I got a scrambler, I learnt that the XT and thus enduros are not for me. But that's okay. Now I am the happy owner of a Yamaha Tracer 700.

Lots of great points - some of taller stature might buy a KLR for their first & be quite comfortable & keep it forever. My opinion for those of smaller stature who are brand new, it is too tall & top heavy for a new rider. Buy something else to cut your teeth on and gain skills, something you feel comfortable on, that you can make mistakes that won't be (or less likely to be) catastrophic - then move up, might just be 1 season on the "learner" bike. I have seen many injure themselves & quit the sport, because they did not start out right. Just my 2 cents :)

I really disagree that a bike with the KLR’s seat height is a good beginner bike. A beginner need to keep it as simple as he or she can because there are a lot of serious issues they are trying to assimilate and trying to remember which way to slide your butt and put your leg down and hold up something that just got REALLY HEAVY when you just stopped just adds to their frustration. A motorcycle that lets them keep easy control of their balance, I.e. being able to flatfoot, is essential to building initial confidence. I learned to ride on a CB350 Honda, but I thought that was the fastest thing I had ever been on… for a few months. But I had balance and basic control of it. Then I moved up to a CB750 and I’m really lucky I didn’t kill myself on that one. It was too big, too heavy, too powerful for my ability. But I made it. My point is, though, if I had started on the 750, or a KLR, I might well have given up motorcycles after dumping them. Beginners should ride what they are comfortably able to handle, even if it’s going to be a brief part of their motorcycle life.
