I think the lack of excitement can also be attributed to the lack of marketing from Disney. Honestly, I forgot this was even happening until this video reminded me of it. In some ways, not overhyping it could be a good thing, but at the same time it could also just pass by unnoticed.

The lack of views doesn’t concern me for this season but it does worry me about future seasons because I would love to watch all the way through Blood of Olympus

My issue isn’t so much the race swapping, my issue is that too many adaptations have USED race swapping as a lazy attempt at appearing diverse and then, once they fail because they didn’t actually put any effort into trying to make a GOOD adaptation, they just use the race swapping as a shield. Like, “the only reason you don’t like this is because you’re a racist”, like, no, I don’t like it because it’s objectively BAD, you could have gotten people who fit the characters to a tee and I’d STILL dislike the adaptation. Because of THAT though, every time I hear of a race swapped character, I immediately think the worst. However, a HUGE point in its favor (besides Rick Riordan running things) is the fact that they aren’t making a big deal about it, so if I still had Disney Plus, I would honestly give it a try.

The sad part is I think the show will be good. Rick's involved so the story will be accurate and I trust the actors will do a good job. They'll even be fleshing things out more than they do in the books. The only hope for this show is if the fans like it and word of mouth makes normal audiences want to check it out. I think the biggest problem is actually the oversaturation of Marvel and Star Wars causing Disney+ viewership to go down. Most people just aren't interested in Disney+

I've been reading the books to my kids and they've been enjoying them. My daughter has been looking forward to this show since she found out about it. I think it's in trouble though. Being on Disney+ doesnt help. The service has been bleeding subscribers for awhile and i dont think it's a big enough property to bring in many new ones. Disney as a company has been struggling and i think they'll have it on a short leash. Either way we'll be watching when it releases.

It would be amazing if the show is successful. Because if they're doing 1 season per book, there are so many scenes from the sequels that i want to see and many characters that deserve a time to shine. Like Tyson, Rachel, Nico and even Blackjack

I have worries about this show too, with Disney+ revenue just heading down in general. I think one reason it doesn’t have much hype right now is the marketing. As of now it’s basically just the fans of the books that would know a whole lot about it. We’re excited because we’ve been waiting, while the general Disney+ subscriber probably doesn’t have a clue what it is and isn’t receiving the trailer for it yet. Granted, it’s really a teaser trailer, which is kind of meant to grab attention, and I can’t say it really grabbed my attention as much as I’d hoped. It gave me great confidence seeing what I’d expect from the books, but if I didn’t know the books nothing really jumps out at me saying “Watch this now!!!”

In terms of the race swapping, since so many movies and tv shows have been doing this to pre-existing characters (and had some pretty nasty results in some scenarios), I think it is understandable that some take issue with this (although some of the reactions might be out of proportion, especially since the actors are quite young). Additionally, considering that the original adaptation race-swapped Grover and made Annabeth a brunette instead of a blonde, it completely makes sense that fans would beg for the characters they love and have grown so close to look like their original counterparts (especially since it seems like race swapping happens primarily with blondes and redheads).

They still cast the wrong character appearance for Annabeth? Because she is one of the characters that was supposed to be a blonde. It is like Disney directors aren't even bothering getting the right looks for the characters at all. They tried for the movies but it is like they gave up on trying to do that for the show. I’m more so frustrated with the fact that this show could be a start of a big franchise for Disney and yet we’re three months away from the premiere and there’s been so little advertisement. I mean we haven’t even had a full-length trailer yet.

I 100% want to see this project succeed. I want all 5 books to be turned into a season but the more stuff comes out, the more worried I am. I think race DOES matters but it’s not the main point. I think the script, the story, the acting is more important but to say race doesn’t matter is a big no. One of the main reasons the 1st movie of Harry Potter was so successful was because they stay truthful to the material. Chris Columbus did everything he could so the trio was as accurate to the source material but never pushed the kids to the point of them being discomfortable (Dan not getting contacts cus it hurt his eyes, Emma not getting buckteeth cus it was hard for her to speak) but staying as truthful is what made fans want to see the movie and it’s what made them stayed for all 8 films. Unlike the first set of Percy Jackson films where they got everything wrong and turned off fans completely. Also, Disney has been screwing up every single thing in all their latest projects. They don’t get characters right, their personality, the story always sucks and it ends up being boring. How is it that the CGI from 20 years ago looks better than the trailer? I am not one of the people boycotting the series, I really want it to be good and because Rick Riordan is behind it this time, I am holding up hope and I am excited to see the series. But I really wished Rick would’ve gone with a different production company.

This show is in the exact same position as ‘Vampire Academy’ was last year. Both had terrible movie adaptations from the 2010’s that both upset fans and majorly stunted the possibility of any future adaptations. I remember in the sub-reddit when the tv show was first announced and everyone was quite excited. There were hopes that ‘Vampire Academy’ would become a fully fledged series that would revitalise the vampire genre. I’m seeing the same thing now with ‘Percy Jackson,’ as few fans are theorising that this could become bigger than ‘Harry Potter’ (I doubt it). But then came the casting. Major race-swaps and appearance changes, accusations of racism against those that complained and a dip in interest for the show. I know both stories are set in the USA but many character appearances reflected the European Mythologies they drew inspiration from (Greece, Romania/Russia/Poland). I’m still of the opinion that this change really hurt the authenticity of ‘Vampire Academy.’ But like ‘Percy Jackson,’ the show runners and actors promised us that character personalities would be honoured and upheld. Quick Summary: They weren’t, barely at all even. The characters shared only name and gender with their book counterparts, it was incredibly disappointing. The streaming service also made very little effort to promote the show and many old book fans weren’t even aware of its existence until it’s release. Similar thing I’m seeing with ‘Percy Jackson’s’ marketing. And ‘Vampire Academy’ got cancelled very quickly after one season. Call me a pessimist, but I’m really worried for this show even if I want it to do well.

For me, I am ABSOLUTELY STOKED. But I didn’t know a trailer was released…so that’s my reason. But, I am SEVERELY worried about continuation of the series with the passing of Lance Riddick (RIP Commander Zavala).

Ok. I'll be real. I was one of the people who was disappointed by the fact that we have a blond Percy. Then I watched Walker in The Adam Project and I said, "Holy SHIT! That is 100% Persassy Jackson." I completely changed my mind thereafter. If the actors can embody the characters, they're fine by me.

With the casting, personally, I love all three actors- like Leah just seems to have an amazing personality + that voice- and Walker just IS Percy. The only problem I have is with how Rick described the main three (less so Grover) in the original series was perhaps not a great representation, is still important. Annabeth is clearly set up as defying the dumb blond stereotype (which I am NOT saying is worse than or even in the same league as racism and all that) but it's still part of her character. Rick wasn't great with representation but as the series went on it did become more and more inclusive- although I am a firm believer in if you're writing non-white characters just for the inclusivity purposes in fear of being cancelled or whatever (not saying this is rick btw) you're doing it for the wrong reasons. Fans would be outraged if Annabeth, or any black character was portrayed by an actor of any other race- not just white. And with Walker- I don't understand why they didn't dye his hair. Percy has "jet black hair" as quoted in the books several times. Not only that, but it's a huge identifying feature- it's nowhere near as complicated as the Annabeth/Leah casting- a bit of hair dye and he'd be perfect. This show had so much potential and I feel like because Rick is such a beloved author, especially with how progressive he is not just in his books but also on social media, he's let that influence the casting- just a bit. I hope this show succeeds, I just wished it stay more true to the books.

My worry definitely comes more from a lack of popularity/viewers at this current moment more than the quality. Riordan playing a huge role in this as well as people complementing what they've seen so far gives me high hopes. I'm also cautiously optimistic that it'll be good enough to get recognition from Disney.

I listened to a few of the audiobooks (slightly dyslexic, so I consider it reading). The books are really not my cup of tea (possibly due to the reader), but I want to give the series a try. Disney didn't truly start teasing Ahsoka until late May or early June. Some of the Star Wars creators were worried at the time, but the show is doing fine - and I would highly recommend it. I'd love your take on a Star Wars project😸

The teaser trailer last year had about as many views as the Star Wars trailers last year (only 900k views less than the Mandalorian trailer, more than The Bad Batch Season 2 and Tales of the Jedi) I think the sneak peak on 15 October will also be much more successful, the teaser came out of nowhere and as a distraction for certain strikes that are going on right now

They announced a teaser/trailer for NYCC, but I think we're all forgetting how much Disney likes to advertise in the weeks leading up to release with hardly a word beforehand. There's also a rumor going around that Disney is combing D+ and Hulu into one app like it is in other countries

race swapping annabeth puts me off, it feels just like black hermione. the amount of times it’s clearly mentioned annabeth has blonde hair is insane. i wasn’t interesting in watching this in the first place, so it’s not like i’m a boycotter and super upset by the race swapping, it just feels off. this probably sounds incredibly racist, but i promise that’s not my intention. if annabeth was originally black and then turned white for the show id feel the same exact way.

Good vid. First point I'd raise is about YT algo optimazation - this trailer is not good for that imo. The title is way too long and that is a pretty bad thumbnail too - its literally just 3 kids in normal clothes, a small Percy Jackson logo in top left (and not particularly easy to read in that font and color). Also I disagree on the point author knows best. Fantastic Beasts flopping as hard as it did pretty clearly showed that is a very flawed line of thinking. King hates the Shining movie, but its beloved too. Author's imput in adapting is important and usually will lead to better quality of said adaptation (HP, HG etc.). But the authors are by no means infallible people. especially when they try to retcon stuff they wrote X years earlier and some things stops adding up, which is what's happening with this casting imo.

I don't think the view count is a problem with the show itself, but the marketing by the Disney Plus youtube channel. If you look at all the other trailers you mentioned, like Artemis Fowl, every one of them had "[Show Name] | Official Trailer" as the title. But the Percy Jackson Trailer didn't even have the word Trailer in it. Also the fact that it's more of a teaser than a full trailer, like all those other ones with millions of views. I'm not worried about the show yet

I don't watch trailers much these days so I was just waiting for the release to watch it. I am excited for the show, however I think you have it right. Disney is too woke for some and for others are just burned out from too many shows to watch. It is getting lost in the noise. I am really hoping it will do well and I can get to see a proper TV adaptation, so let's wait and see.

The reason people are annoyed with the casting of annabeth is because the books explicitly state multiple times she has blond hair and grey eyes. This naturally goes with white skin and they might mention that. I have no problem with asian grover its only annabeth I have an annoyance with. But when the books themselves state her appearance and the show doesnt even try to follow it people believe its because they are trying to be diverse and get mad because they don't like when this happens. this being said I still might watch the show and the casting will have no impact on whether I watch it

I’m literally rereading the whole series for the first time in like 6 years just to get ready for this show. I hope it’s great and I trust Rick Riordan’s judgement of how his own creation should be adapted to television.

Where do I begin. When writing a book you have to describe the character in a line. Percy had black hair and green eyes. Annabeth was tan and had blonde hair grey eyes grover was Percy Jackson's guardian and had a scruffy beard and he was in he early 20s. This isn't Percy Jackson when did Percy Jackson have blonde hair and blue eyes like a Nazi German the man is about to hail Hitler. By all means this isn't about skin color but the details of the characters. For a multi billion dollar company you can't even get that right. What your doing is the equivalent to Harry Potter with out the lighting bolt. Darth Vader in a pink suit instead of black. Hell even riptide looks like a lightsaber instead of a sword. If you can't get the attention of detail right in the characters we all fell in love with then this show may or may not succeed. Because this is not the characters of Percy Jackson

If they can show snip bits or scenes that can emphasize the characters, maybe that would be enough to show why the actors were chosen to portray these parts.

This show suffers from one of the same problems that the movie "adaptations" did: many, if not most of the characters, look nothing like the way they were described in the books.

I read the whole series (PJO, Heroes of Olympus and Trials of Apollo) once a year, and the main problem with the show is basically: Disney is giving 0 fucks to the marketing. The backlash from the raceswapping have some reasoning behind. How many times raceswapping characters has been used as a bait for controversy and then shield from criticism? Is almost expected. Also, unless they make some script changes if the series goes beyond the PJO arc, kinda undermines Annabeth's character, on Mark of Athena, she explains why she works harder than anyone, because of the stereotypical dumb blonde trope, she feels that the need to prove that she's more than just a blonde girl. I want the show to be good, but Disney did nothing to make me want to see it.

I love that I am watching this after the full teaser came out and not before or I would have started worrying. But currently that new teaser has 4.7 million views in just 3 days. I think the show is gonna do great because PJO fans have been wanting a book accurate series for soooo long.

I was so happy about the movies existing that i liked them a long time and watched them a lot. It hurted to see how much they abandoned the book storylines and so far the series seems to stick to a lot from the first book

I think Percy Jackson currently has a lesser audience because of how much time has passed between the books and this series, but i think once the show airs it'll gain the traction for the second series as long it as they give themselves time for word of mouth to spread, because in the 1st PJO series every book gets better and better until the 5th one. Maybe this type of hero's journey films are dying, films themselves could be dying, but i think the PJO series at least the very first season is going to be underrated

I haven't read the Percy Jackson books yet mainly because i have other books im reading and plan to like finishing Harry Potter, then reading divergent and hunger games when i saw the title for this video I thought maybe I would be able to watch it in a movie(yes I know its a series) adaptation but considering what people have said and some of the coments im scared what I watch will effect how I see the characters like it did for Harry Potter dispite me knowing they look and act a bit different(Like Harry having green eyes not blue and Hermione not being a perfect person like she was shown in the movies)so im not sure if I will get into this right away or ever just because im scared it will effect my pov of the characters of I end up reading the books at all

A few very important things to note: 1) Artemis Fowl was hella marketed, specifically on KZfaq, and it was during Covid, so most people were at home anyways. 2) We have only gotten that single teaser. More marketing will mean more views. 3) You have to add up views on TikTok (6.5M), KZfaq (Disney Plus: 752K, ONE Media: 250K), the original teaser on KZfaq (Disney Plus: 6.5M), and the fact that all those numbers are simply the US accounts. That is a total of over 14M views. That is without an official trailer. 4) Disney is in hot waters rn with Snow White and other films. The PJO show will be just fine. Once Disney starts marketing (expect around end of October, mid November) the views will grow and it will be clear how many people are waiting for this show.

To me this whole thing mainly shows that Rick Riordan is a hypocrite. He was the one who (rightfully so) voiced his complaints about the movies doing drastic changes from the books. One glaring example of that was the age change that made the protagonists young adults instead of kids or young teenagers like in the books. But now with this TV series where Riordan is involved and has a lot of creative control he is doing the same thing. That's one of the reasons why I'm probably not gonna watch the show.

Annabeth being BLONDE and WHITE with GREY eyes is a characteristic shared by EVERY son and daughters of Athena. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT FACT. Imagine this survives until the Heroes of Olympus: Mark of Athena. Plus Annabeth, being a smart kid, BREAKS THE STEREOTYPE that BLONDES are stupid. Plus the fact that she is cousin to Magnus Chase (another demigod character of Rick Riordan from the novel of the same name, son of the Vanir God Freyr) connected thru her paternal side. If her father was black, this DOES NOT connect very well to Magnus. Magnus CANNOT BE BLACK as being Scandinavian means he has to be WHITE. There are NO EVIDENCE that were was ever a black dude among vikings. The closest one being a Half Mongolian and Half Icelandic. This does not play to any narrative in any angle. Percy Jackson as a book is already DIVERSE. No need for race swapping. Blackwashing should also be considered as a racist act!

I think the show just wasn't promoted enough, I am a big fan of the IP and was excited with the project but I found the trailer like a week later. Also yeah the cast can be an issue, I had no big problems with it at first but the kicker is that what annoyed me the most was percy staying blonde the race swapping even if I would have prefered not to be a thing I was okay with since those childs could surprise with ther talent but you can dye the hair or get a wig for percy? The kid looks more like young jason or will and the trio as a whole is irrecognizable, i don't know the percy bit just looked like lack of comitment for me. I probably will still give it a try but the trailer got my expectations down.

I’m hopeful with the casting and I am very happy with Mr. Riordan’s casting because even though the looks aren’t perfect, the personalities are perfect. My concern is the popularity and the delay due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Hopefully the Percy Jackson series will endure the hardships.

a big issue is also the strikes going on in hollywood right now. while usually people who worked on the show are actively promoting it on their social media (posting the trailer, bts content, etc) they can’t do that rn. and unless the strikes end we won’t even get a proper press tour which is how a lot of people come to know a show/movie is coming out. they are failing to build hype around most media right now because no one can promote it.

Honestly, I'm pretty sure that the people who complain about the casting choices are the "toxic" people in our fandom and it's really the author ( Rick Riordan ) choice. If he thinks that they're the best, THEY ARE THE BEST.

I was talking about this with a friend just yesterday. I'm very worried because Rick Riordan only has ONE chance to make this work unfortunately since the films were failures. Hardly any other studio will want to touch Percy Jackson if the series fails too. I was wondering if this lack of interest is due to the fact that the "original" Percy fans have grown up and the series seems to start with a slightly childish vibe, or perhaps it's our skepticism towards Disney speaking louder. But I think unfortunately the biggest problem for people who are boycotting is because of the color of the characters. This ideological war sucks!Their color shouldn't matter if it has no relevance to the story being told. But people are very ignorant. Anyway... I'm here hoping it works out 'cause it's my dream to have a decent adaptation of Percy. And honestly, Percy, Harry and Narnia getting remakes feels like I'm living a second childhood.

The race bending is getting old tbh. Feels like a poor attempt to be woke or whatever. They could have at least given Annabeth her gray eyes. That eye color would have looked cool with her dark skin because its unusual, and would be just another otherworldly part of being halfblood. Also they could have dyed Percy's hair. Feels like a lack of effort in that regard.

The problem is it’s a Disney show

I hope that the Percy Jackson show really does well, I started reading the pjo books in 2020 and finished the whole riordanverse series in 2022. I would love to see the percy jackson films grow into a beloved series for fans to remember for years. Something I did notice is that the teaser did well, (6.4 Million views,) and the trailer only did (as you said) barely a million. I in fact thought that the trailer came out of nowhere, i think it was bad marketing as well.
