Tolkien did write 2 versions of an epilogue that takes place 15 years after Frodo leaves and sails into the West, on the anniversary of the destruction of the One Ring. In both versions, Tolkien concludes the epilogue with a conversation between Sam and Rosie after their children go to sleep. “The stars were shining in a clear dark sky. It was the second day of the bright and cloudless spell that came every year to the Shire towards the end of March, and was every year welcomed and praised as something surprising for the season. All the children were now in bed. It was late, but here and there lights were still glimmering in Hobbiton, and in houses dotted about the night-folded countryside. Master Samwise stood at the door and looked away eastward. He drew Mistress Rose to him, and set his arm about her. ‘March the twenty-fifth!’ he said. ‘This day seventeen years ago, Rose wife, I didn’t think I should ever see thee again. But I kept on hoping.’ ‘I never hoped at all, Sam,’ she said, ‘not until that very day; and then suddenly I did. About noon it was, and I felt so glad that I began singing. And mother said: “Quiet, lass! There’s ruffians about.” And I said: “Let them come! Their time will soon be over. Sam’s coming back.” And you came.’ ‘I did,’ said Sam. ‘To the most belovedest place in all the world. To my Rose and my garden.’ They went in, and Sam shut the door. But even as he did so, he heard suddenly, deep and unstilled, the sigh and murmur of the Sea upon the shores of Middle-earth.” Sam and Rosie end up having 13 children in total: Elanor, Frodo, Rose, Merry, Pippin, Goldilocks, Hamfast, Daisy, Primrose, Bilbo, Ruby, Robin and Tolman. After Rosie passes from old age and Sam's youngest child (Tolman) comes of age, Sam passes the Red Book to his oldest (Elanor) and also sails into the West - as Sam, though briefly, also held the One Ring.

The reason the brother of Eyoen “over reacted” was because she appeared dead with the black breath affecting her. It took a few men to convince him in the books that she was alive. Only the king can heal that type of wound. As shown with her breathing easing up.

Idk if someone has said it in the comments already, but the song which Aragorn sings after being coronated is the same words his ancestor Elendil spoke when he first got to Middle-Earth after the fall of Numenor, consequently establishing the kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor.

Arwen is of the Half-Elven. They may choose the life of an Elf or a mortal. As Elrond and his twin Elros have done. Elrond chose the life of an Elf and Elros chose the life of a mortal and became the first King of Numenor. Elros reigns for 410 years, living 500. Elros is also an ancestor of Aragorn, which explains him being in his late 80s during the events of LOTR.

At 40:12 the director elected to omit a small but important scene here. In the book, after Gollum has been defeated and Frodo is trudging up the road to the Sammath Naur, the Chambers of Fire in Mount Doom, to destroy the Ring, Sam is left behind to kill Gollum. But Sam, having borne the Ring himself for a little while, finally takes pity on Gollum and sends him off with a kick in the rear, then follows Frodo. He doesn't see Gollum turn, and with a look of madness in his eyes, follow Sam. Later, when all is over and the Ring has been destroyed, and Frodo and Sam are lying on a crag surrounded by lava, waiting to die, Frodo says, "But do you remember Gandalf's words: 'Even Gollum may have something yet to do?' But for him, Sam, I could not have destroyed the Ring. The Quest would have been in vain, even at the bitter end. So let us forgive him! For the Quest is achieved, and now all is over. I am glad you are here with me. Here at the end of all things, Sam."

Some interesting bits of trivia: the actor who played Haldir, the blond elf who gets his head split at the battle of Helm's Deep also played the ugly, crippled Orc general in the final film. And the scene where everyone bows to the four Hobbits was the very last scene shot before they wrapped. The first scene ever shot was when Frodo shouts at the other 3 Hobbits to get off the road when they hide from the black rider in the first movie.

At 46:04 you ask, "So was there ever a story where Sam fills those things in?" Tolkien wrote an Epilogue chapter where Sam reads out of the Red Book to his children, but he decided that all the existing endings were enough for one story. There are extensive Appendices following ROTK that fill in some of the story: Sam and Rose are married for 62 years and have 13 children, and Sam becomes Mayor of the Shire for seven 7-year terms. After MIstress Rose's death, he leaves the Red Book with his eldest daughter Elanor and departs over Sea to the Undying Lands, last of the Ring-bearers.

28:59 The film has a little bit of a plot hole here. Shelob jabs Frodo with her stinger in a location that should have been protected by the mithril vest, meaning Frodo would have felt it but the venom should not have been able to enter his body. In the book it's not a plot hole because Shelob stings him in the neck.

From a visual and symbolic perspective, I actually think Saruman's movie death is amazing. He really thought himself so high and mighty and invincible and above others, so it's kinda poetic that he's killed by someone he thought next to nothing of and that he falls from the top of the Tower to the bottom and is killed by something as undignified and unmagical as a wheel spoke.

At 5:03 you ask, "That's how he goes out?" Saruman's death is rather different in the book, and happens somewhat later in the story, but its aftermath is worth quoting: "To the dismay of those that stood by, about the body of Saruman a grey mist gathered, and rising slowly to a great height like smoke from a fire, as a pale shrouded figure it loomed over the Hill. For a moment it wavered, looking to the West; but out of the West came a cold wind, and it bent away, and with a sigh dissolved into nothing." At 9:00, Arwen and her father are "Half-elven." Elrond and his twin brother Elros had a human father and an Elven mother. At the end of the First Age, they were given a choice by the Valar, the Guardians of the World, of which kindred they wanted to be. Elros chose to be human and became the first King of Numenor, while Elrond chose to be of Elf-kind. The choice was also given to Elrond's offspring (Arwen also had twin elder brothers, who don't appear in the movie). At the time of the story, Arwen is nearly 2800 years old, so her choice wasn't lightly made. Her union with Aragorn reunited the two branches of the Half-elven line.

At 20:30, in the book Merry is given a ride to Minas Tirith by one "Dernhelm," whom he had noticed before, while riding with Theoden while he was reviewing his troops: "But when they had come almost to the end of the line one looked up glancing keenly at the hobbit. A young man, Merry thought as he returned the glance, less in height and girth than most. He caught the glint of clear grey eyes, and then he shivered, for it came suddenly to him that it was the face of one without hope who goes in search of death." Merry doesn't learn the true identity of "Dernhelm" until the climax of the battle. I'm OK with the movie's version of events; it seems hard to believe that Merry could ride for days on the same horse without figuring out who "Dernhelm" was.

*Return of the King* film is my absolute favorite. Because it has a lot of great scenes and my favorite quotes in it too! 1. Gandalf whacks the villain giving out the speech on the nose 👃 with his staff. 2. When those nasty nazgul creatures swarmed in I got all, "Aw, man! 😒 Where are the eagles when I need them?!" And then all of a sudden, an eagle swoops down and attacks the nazgul and when Pippin shouts, _"THE EAGLES ARE COMING!!!!"_ I then got all, "Oh, wow! Wish granted!" 😅🧞‍♂️ & 3. When Sam entered into the dungeon and was fighting off the orcs to save Frodo, he shouts, "That's for Frodo! That's for the Shire! And that's for my old gaffer!"

"... But i can carry you!" I still cry. We all need a Samwise the brave in our lives. Also fun fact: the orc general is named Gothmog, after the king of the balrogs (there were a LOT of them back in the times of Morgoth). Second fun fact: the battering ram Grond is named after the warhammer Morgoth wielded during the War of Wrath. The ram is shaped like a wolf because Sauron invented werewolves and could turn into a wicked wolf himself. Third fun fact: the "no man can kill me" line refers to a prophecy (which Rowling copied for hers)

Bro "Somebody needs to do something about this now" when Gollum has the ring and dancing around is so funny to me for some reason. So matter-of-factly like it's just a nuisance that needs to be removed.

At 36:25 you say, "Shes doesn't even look injured." Eowyn's left arm should be in a sling, since the Witch-King broke her shield arm with his mace. A small detail the director overlooked.

I find Gollum fascinating, too. Aaww! I was hoping you’d speak about two of my favourite parts; Gandalf and Pippin galloping through Minas Tirith and the lightning of the beacons, but you can’t fit in everything. I’ve really enjoyed your commentary on all three films. You’re all very funny.

4:48 You may know this already, but in the book, Saruman is only kicked out of the Order of Wizards, and loses his staff, but he and Grima remain alive in Orthanc until Saruman convinces Treebeard to let him and Grima go free. Later, he takes over the Shire, and Frodo and co. rally the Hobbits, and defeat Saruman, then he is killed by Grima at Bag End, and then Grima is killed by angry Hobbits.

9:01 And that person will be me (or one of anyway, I'm sure others will fill you in as well.). Arwen is a half-elf, or Peredhil, (people of Middle-Earth who's blood has both that of elves and men) and half-elves are given the choice between immortality and mortality. Arwen chose a mortal life because Aragorn can't live forever with her, and as she herself states "I would rather spend one lifetime with you than face all the ages of this world alone." Hope this helps.

People need to understand that the eagles are not just a taxi service that the heroes can call anytime they want. The eagles are just another race of free folk just like men, elves, dwarves, hobbits, etc. They come to help on their own accord.

Arwen and Elrond are part of a special bloodline of Half Elves. One of their ancestors was one of the long-lived humans, and his wife was a renowned Elf Maiden. They did many great deeds and helped Elves re-open the doorway to Elf Heaven, centuries ago. Because of their great deeds, their bloodline of Half-Elves was given a special gift. They could choose to follow their Human ancestry and live a (long but) natural human lifespan, or they could choose to follow their Elven heritage, and remain Immortal as an Elf forever. Elrond chose Elf way back when. Arwen had not yet chosen. In the movie, she makes up her mind finally, and chooses her Mortal Heritage, as is her birthright. She now will eventually die of old age (but slower than most men). There you go. There's a lot more to it, of course, but that's the Summary.

When you finish reading the books, you'll learn there's a reason why Eowyn could defeat the Witch King, (hint: it was actually Merry removing his protections by stabbing his leg, his dagger is a special dagger) and you'll also learn why she collapsed afterwards. (Hint no. 2: she got the same sickness that Frodo got when he was stabbed in the first movie/book by simply coming face to face with the Witch King. There's also a whole romance arc between her and Faramir in the book while she's recovering from her sickness.)
