I take a look at the S2000 through my Miata-tinted glasses. Is this car really worth the hype?

Its even more shocking when you realize that little Honda is technically a mid 90’s Car. Honda WAITED to release it in the new millennium as a gift to itself but it had already hatched in the 90’s. Its made its way to 2024 and STILL is the benchmark, and one of the most solid platforms in road racing. The s2000 never got the type r treatment because it would of cannibalized the NSX. Yeah the CR came later but, not close to what Honda would of done with a Type R.

It truly has aged like fine wine amongst all of these new drive-by-computer cars. It still feels refined and surprisingly modern. Considering it was designed in the 90’s (didn’t know that), it feels like a newer car. Insanely good.

I own an AP2 and I've driven many ND Miatas. Both are great cars, but the S2000 engine is MUCH more special, more raw, and more angry. It's a more visceral experience.
@VictorPitstop2 ай бұрын
Amen to that! It really is special. Funny how the ND1 2.0 was just an afterthought from Mazda then they did a few things for the ND2 and it’s still a ‘meh’ motor. lol

The S2000 is complete hype... when I drive my AP1, i get this hyper excitment. When I am having a hard time in my life and depressed. I get hyped to jump in my S2K. Ive owned Boosted honda/Mr2T/Awd DSMs ETC. It literally feels like a race car.

Looks like someone got bit by the s2k bug 🤣 I don’t think I could ever sell my CR after owning for just over a decade. Nothing modern feels like the s2k except maybe the new gr86. Hope you find yourself in one in the future.

I have been delaying driving one for a supremely long time just because I didn’t want this to happen. It’s hard lusting after really damn good cars like the S2K. Nothing but mad love for the car because it’s perfect.

I own an identical blue, stock S2000 and TBH I was ready to hear a ND owner trash it. I actually really respect and like Miatas too. Is there a rift between communities? I give a wave or thumbs up to any roadsters I see. Hopefully they're not taking it facetiously. I got my S2K a decade ago so it wasn't quite built up into the status it carries today. Just taking care of and enjoying it.
@VictorPitstop3 ай бұрын
Not so much a rift but everyone seems to be glued to there platform out of sheer loyalty and circumstance. At the end of the day, we are all winning driving these awesome JDM sports cars! Thanks for the comment and keep your S2000 forever if you can!

@@VictorPitstop Too true. I even try to get along with the British roadster guys, most of the time they don't seem to like Miatas, S2Ks and such. The club president explained to me it might be jealousy because they are dependable, but on the flip side of the coin, I respect those guys for doing what it takes to keep that history and character on the road. Like you described it, though, the "knife" feel of the S2K is what made it the roadster for me.

Love love my LBP (same color as this car) AP2 but from time to time I think I’d like to have a 911 Carrera T but then I go for a drive in my S and those thoughts just disappear! I’m pushing 70 and I’ve had a lot of cool cars over my life time but non of them make me feel like I feel when I drive my S2000. Thank for a great track review.

@@user-ev5zt9dy5x there’s a magical feeling about these cars. A Porsche is great but takes away from the purest driving experience of an S2K. Age is just a number, keep getting behind the wheel and get your serotonin fix. Thank you for watching!

I have never heard someone call the ap2 transmissions notchy. EVER.
@VictorPitstop3 ай бұрын
Interesting… it clicks into place very nicely, with great tactile feedback. Maybe that’s a better description for you? Notchy to me is good feedback but when it’s too notchy, that’s bad.
@sdlausen13 ай бұрын
@@VictorPitstop Ahh. That makes sense. "Notchy" to me is when it's not exactly smooth shifting into gear. The ap2 trans has carbon synchros and it's smooth as butter. The reverse of "notchy".
@VictorPitstop3 ай бұрын
@@sdlausen1 I feel that; it can totally be taken the wrong way too. You never want too vague of a shifter and never too notchy of a shifter. Of course the ND and S2K are juuuuust right!
@iMickel3 ай бұрын
Have you ever owned one? It is a extremely notchy trans until warmed up which takes more time than expected
@sdlausen13 ай бұрын
@@iMickel I own an s2k for 12 years and counting. My trans is smooth as butter. Perhaps you need to change you trans fluid. I've used Pennzoil synchromesh for 12 years without issue! Also, OP and I have different understandings of what "notchy" means. You and I both see notchy as a little grindy when you shift. OP sees notchy as smooth and clicks into gear perfectly.

🤔🤔🤔 My question is why does everyone compare a 20plus year old S2000 to your late model Mx5's... 86's and every late model vehicles produced. Why don't these reviews compare the car's from the same era as the S2000???
@VictorPitstop3 ай бұрын
Because they’re soooooooooooo ahead of their time. Nothing in that era really compares. My question to you is: What car from that era would you compare it to? My next question is have you driven an S2000? Have you driven any generation of Miata’s?
@mrjk08903 ай бұрын
@@VictorPitstop I own a S2000... R32 Gtr's... FD3S... Jza80 Supra... SW20 Mr2 REV 3 and 5... RPS13 Type X... S14's... S30 240Z. A Chassis i can say the S2000 compares with is a S30 240Z but they are decades apart. Only chassis/handling to compare in the same era is the FD3S but!!! The FD is a slug.
@VictorPitstop3 ай бұрын
@@mrjk0890 a man of TRUE JDM culture I see! I tip my proverbial hat to you! See, you answered your own question right there; the S30 compares to the experience of the S2K however they are decades apart. The ND Miata is decades apart from the S2000 and it’s the best comparison you can do at this time. The age of analog cars is all but gone with all of this digital nonsense but Toyobaru and Mazda are the remaining JDM companies keeping it as minimal as possible. New Honda is great but the tech is definitely keeping it digital. According to another S2000 fan, the car was designed in the 90’s but saved for the new millennium just to keep it a 00’s car. That blows my mind even more because 90’s cars are great but technically that puts the S2000 FAR ahead of its time. I won’t compare the S2000 to Miata/86 anymore because as I said, you literally just can’t do that. At the end of the day, JDM cars are fascinating in every era.
@mrjk08903 ай бұрын
@@VictorPitstopNow that you driven a S2000... You think I should drive a NC Mx5 or any of the Mx5 model's? I've driven and owned and still own plenty of JDM car's... But the S2000 is still always my favourite!!!
@VictorPitstop3 ай бұрын
@@mrjk0890 also, the FD being called a ‘slug’ is crazy to me but I have not driven one, so I wouldn’t know. I would love to some day. It’s a sports car but also a GT car so I suppose that has something to do with it?
