Could studying Ben’s superhuman microbiome unlock secrets about the dynamic connection between our environments, activities, and everyday health?

Gut Bacteria From Elite Athletes Could Soon Become a Probiotic Supplement
www.seeker.com/health/gut-bac...
"An ongoing research project at Harvard University is attempting to identify and isolate beneficial bacteria from the digestive tracts of elite athletes then convert the bacteria into commercial probiotic supplements. The microbiomes of elite players - the ecosystems in their guts - might generate elite kinds of bacteria, in other words, that aid in athletic performance."
Gut scrum - the rugby microbiome team
www.sfi.ie/research-news/news...
"In particular, the scientists found that the athlete’s microbiome is primed for tissue repair and to harness energy from the diet, reflecting the significant energy demands and high cell-turnover evident in elite sport. Thus, the state of physical fitness is not limited to the athlete alone; it appears to also include conditioning of the microbiota."
The High-Performance Secrets Inside Athletes' Guts
www.outsideonline.com/2274446...
"[Climber Alex] Honnold’s gut has way more Prevotella than the average American’s. Some research has connected high levels of this genus to intense exercise, but Hyde thinks the bug-which turns complex carbs into energy-likely thrives because of his vegetarian diet."

Ben Lecomte's historic swim across the Pacific Ocean is a feat that can’t be missed. Join us as we dive into the most extensive data set of the Pacific Ocean ever collected. Learn about the technology the Seeker crew is using to deter sharks away from Ben and measure the impact of the long-distance swim on his mind and body. Ben's core mission is to raise awareness for ocean health issues, so we’ll investigate key topics such as pollution and plastics as he swims closer to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, discover potential consequences from climate change, and examine how factors like ocean currents can impact his progress along the way.
Seeker explains every aspect of our world through a lens of science, inspiring a new generation of curious minds who want to know how today’s discoveries in science, math, engineering and technology are impacting our lives, and shaping our future. Considering I have so many gut issues, I am becoming well-versed in what the gut does to the human body, including sleep, appetite, skin breaking out, etc. The gut is at the core of a lot of things related to our health.

Hey Seekers! As @jlccarv aptly pointed out, there is some debate around the 10:1 bacterial:human cell ratio cited in the video - turns out those little buggers are hard to count! There are lots of ways to try to quantify them: number of cells, density of cells, and cell mass, for example, but the main point is that different concentrations of bacteria appear in different parts of the body. Some researchers have noted that the 10:1 number may apply more to the colon specifically than to all of our organs and systems combined, emphasizing that a revised estimate "does not take away from the biological importance of the microbiota." You can check out their math here if you're interested: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4991899/ Thanks for watching!

I recently read an article in Wall Street about the microbiome and how it can reveal more about your health than any other test and that the studies that they described within the article were so intriguing, i thought this would be so cool to study. Now my indecisive self wants to study micro biology so thanks a lot science. Also 6th comment.

I don't have any information to back up any of these claims, but I do know that my stomach is very highly regulated and influenced by the bso (evidence is increased flatulence, eg. poor digestion) to limit my capabilities. it definitely has a lot to do with stamina and mental/emotional health, as I believe the better the stomach is able to process things, the more "positive" someone's thoughts are, and therefore the more emotionally stable someone is, activating that superhuman performance. (tl;dr - stomach performance = increased emotional stability = increased stamina and performance)

like i said, don't eat processed foods, they're pretty much all bad for you no matter what the package says...although I've heard some people found a compromise in european gummy bears. thats where the moderation comes in. I was pretty much joking, since its almost impossible to give people good health advice, because their knowledge as well as their individual situations are all over the place. thats why most doctors don't bother and just tell you to exercise and eat right. sure, thx doc. thats like telling a person on fire to stay away from gas stations!

STOP GIVING HIM CARBS! No wonder he has to eat all throughout the day. Carbs are just keeping him hungry. Throw a steak & some eggs at him every morning, and he won't need to eat until he gets out of the water. You're not measuring the effect of the ocean or strain on his body, you're only measuring the effects of the unhealthy diet you're giving him and how THAT stresses the body. Do him a favor, throw away the carbs. I bet my right hand his performance and health will improve
