As long as a layover may feel to some, at least most of us won't have to endure living in an airport for months on end. Certainly doesn't mean we can't learn a little about people who do, though!

After injuring my foot while backpacking and having very little money, I lived in an airport in Italy for nearly 3 weeks. There was actually a small community of "hidden homeless" also living there. A couple of Turks took me under their wing and showed me the ropes. Eventually I began working for tips. Made lots of friends. Washed clothes and cleaned myself in an "out of the way" bathroom. Even watched movies, including The Terminal, on free airport WiFi. One of the funniest things is that Burger King was my primary FREE food source. On the receipts, you could take an online survey and get a free Whopper. I'd just pick up the receipts customers left on the tables, create a fake e-mail (1 whopper per account), and bam, Whopper Heaven.

Countries who adopted the 1954 UN Convention on the Status of Stateless Persons are obliged to issue travel documents to stateless persons who are in their country legally, so saying stateless = no passport = no visa is a bit of a simplification and not true.

I actually wound up living in the Phoenix Airport for a couple months. I was a flight attendant, but couldn't afford to get an apartment, had been kicked out of my crash pad for needing to stay too much, and commuting from Portland, near where my family lives wasn't doable on a regular basis. As a result, between trips and while I was on reserve, I lived in the airline's crew room. Eventually I found someone on Craigslist that was looking for a roommate and at a rate i could afford, so I grabbed my two suitcases holding all my belongings and moved into their apartment.

5:29 For no apparent reason? Didn't you mention his passport was expired? Most airlines outside US know the visa requirements of other countries and the staff checks for discrepancies during the check in process. Otherwise the destination country not only kick them out but bills the airline for bringing an undocumented person into their country.

All my experiences in Belgium, as of yet, have been in Brussels, so perhaps I should give the country a bit more of a chance.
