All of what you said is completely false, and a simple google search will tell you this, or talking to any qualified horse person. I would suggest you look into this a lot deeper, because this misinformation can be dangerous. Many people have been misled to think they are using a “soft bit” because they think it is a snaffle just because it’s broken (single jointed), when in reality it isn’t. The simple definition of a snaffle is a 1:1 direct ratio of pressure… no leverage what so ever. You pull one pound of pressure, and the horse feels one pound of pressure. You can have snaffles with a Mullen mouth (straight bar), as I showed one in the video. Many happy mouth snaffles are Mullen mouths aswell, they are very popular in English riding. A Mullen mouth tends to be a kind option because you can distribute the pressure evenly. A single joint has a direct effect on the horse’s bars, and that is often where you see the bruising from misuse. You can have shanked bits that are single jointed, which I also showed. A shanked bit having a single joint does not make it a snaffle. The mouthpiece does not define whether a bit is a snaffle or a curb bit, the cheek pieces do, because a mouthpiece has no effect on leverage, or poll pressure for that matter. Where are you getting all of this information from, genuinely? 🤣 If you use a leverage bit, a curb chain is a necessity for proper functionality. Without it, the bit will over rotate and cause unnecessary and unwanted pressure to the horse. That is the sole purpose for a curb chain/curb strap, to prevent over rotation. & anyone who is not aware of this should not be using a leverage bit. A Tom Thumb is 1000% worse than a spade bit, and they are complete opposite sides of the spectrum. A Tom Thumb is a cheap, poorly made bit, that had no thought behind the mechanics or the anatomy of a horse’s mouth. They are pinchy and rely on pain compliance and are extremely unbalanced bits. A spade bit however, can go for over 1k. This is because they are hand made, have high regard for the horse’s mouth anatomy, and are extremely balanced bits. They rely on signal alone, simply from the spoon leaving the horse’s tongue with a tiny lift of the rein. A spade bit horse is able pack the bit themselves and carry it without a headstall. These horses are so well established that they will noticed a slight off balance in the bit. A lot of them are custom made for that specific horse. A Tom Thumb should never be used in the training process of any horse. On the other hand, a Spade Bit exemplifies a horse that has gone through 6-10 years of delicate and precise training to be able to respond to complex aids. Of course, I’ve seen it myself, many uneducated people get ahold of spade bits and use them incorrectly, but that’s not apart of this discussion.
