Thank you for this video! You did an awesome job with it! I My horse gets really tired after an attack, but maybe not all do? He paws at the ground, gets sweaty, head bobbing, twitches and rubs his nose on stuff, likes to be alone, doesn’t want to eat. Also when i did my test on him i used his registration number so if anyone else had him they would see it on his papers. I’m going to have my horse sitter watch this! You did such a great job! Thank you!

You did well, but a straight bar bit or any non broken bit is not a snaffle. The break is part of the definition. A snaffle is a broken bit with no poll action. A bar bit can be straight or curved, and is an unbroken bit with no poll action. Because the bar bit works differently on the bars of the horses mouth it is not considered a snaffle. You are also incorrect about curb chains. There is no need for one except to put pressure on the sensitive areas of the chin through leverage. There is no way the curb strap provides any other purpose than to provide leverage to pinch both against the chin, and to pull the bit against the tongue and bars. You also have to remember that names can change over time, so that is not important. Physics don't change. Leverage doesn't change. ANY bit can be misused. I have seen people slice the bars with a snaffle, and I saw one guy break the jaw of a horse with a spade bit. I have seen mouths cut by ports, and cuts caused by chin straps. And last, there is no way a Tom thumb is worse than a spade bit. But again, except for those small details, you did a good job.
@OliveDeuce

All of what you said is completely false, and a simple google search will tell you this, or talking to any qualified horse person. I would suggest you look into this a lot deeper, because this misinformation can be dangerous. Many people have been misled to think they are using a “soft bit” because they think it is a snaffle just because it’s broken (single jointed), when in reality it isn’t. The simple definition of a snaffle is a 1:1 direct ratio of pressure… no leverage what so ever. You pull one pound of pressure, and the horse feels one pound of pressure. You can have snaffles with a Mullen mouth (straight bar), as I showed one in the video. Many happy mouth snaffles are Mullen mouths aswell, they are very popular in English riding. A Mullen mouth tends to be a kind option because you can distribute the pressure evenly. A single joint has a direct effect on the horse’s bars, and that is often where you see the bruising from misuse. You can have shanked bits that are single jointed, which I also showed. A shanked bit having a single joint does not make it a snaffle. The mouthpiece does not define whether a bit is a snaffle or a curb bit, the cheek pieces do, because a mouthpiece has no effect on leverage, or poll pressure for that matter. Where are you getting all of this information from, genuinely? 🤣 If you use a leverage bit, a curb chain is a necessity for proper functionality. Without it, the bit will over rotate and cause unnecessary and unwanted pressure to the horse. That is the sole purpose for a curb chain/curb strap, to prevent over rotation. & anyone who is not aware of this should not be using a leverage bit. A Tom Thumb is 1000% worse than a spade bit, and they are complete opposite sides of the spectrum. A Tom Thumb is a cheap, poorly made bit, that had no thought behind the mechanics or the anatomy of a horse’s mouth. They are pinchy and rely on pain compliance and are extremely unbalanced bits. A spade bit however, can go for over 1k. This is because they are hand made, have high regard for the horse’s mouth anatomy, and are extremely balanced bits. They rely on signal alone, simply from the spoon leaving the horse’s tongue with a tiny lift of the rein. A spade bit horse is able pack the bit themselves and carry it without a headstall. These horses are so well established that they will noticed a slight off balance in the bit. A lot of them are custom made for that specific horse. A Tom Thumb should never be used in the training process of any horse. On the other hand, a Spade Bit exemplifies a horse that has gone through 6-10 years of delicate and precise training to be able to respond to complex aids. Of course, I’ve seen it myself, many uneducated people get ahold of spade bits and use them incorrectly, but that’s not apart of this discussion.

If your vet tells you to give your horse Tylenol daily, find a new vet.
@OliveDeuce
@OliveDeuce 3 ай бұрын
🤣🤣🤣 why is that? It was recommended by two vets, who I know are highly qualified. He has DSLD. It is often prescribed alongside equioxx, because it’s a mild NSAID. I would NEVER administer it without vet permission. Additionally, I would also never give my horse something I was personally uncomfortable with. He just recently had blood taken and all of his kidney and liver values were healthy. I would not condone anyone to give it to their horse without a qualified veterinarian’s discretion. However in Deuce’s case, this is just a part of managing his disease, and it has helped him a lot. A lot of horses with DSLD/DJD rely on NSAIDs for comfort and maintaining quality of life.

Questions. 1. Is he on acetazolomide? 2. What changed when he was 9 to make him symptomatic? 3 why are you feeding grass hay and a sweet feed? I’ve always fed my NH horses oats and alfalfa and supplement when I’m fitting them. The three most common causes of an attack are stress, diet and a barometric pressure change.
@OliveDeuce
@OliveDeuce 4 ай бұрын
Clearly, you did not watch the video completely if you are asking these questions, as ALL of your answers are within the video, in great detail actually. But I shall explain it in greater detail to you. 1. Yes he is. I explained that I started him on it 2 weeks ago. 2. A lot of HYPP horses are “asymptomatic” for a long period in their life, and suddenly become symptomatic around 10 years of age. This is actually very common. Or, if a horse has shown symptoms since a young age, a lot of times those symptoms worsen as they age. However, when he was 9 he was sent into training by his old owner to be started under saddle. That very well may have triggered symptoms, but either way I personally believe he would have ended up showing them eventually. He has had several health issues including ulcers, cellulitis, pastern dermatitis, rain rot?, skin scalding, cribbing, severe thrush, and now diagnosed with DSLD so those may all have been stress factors and that was all followed with many different medications and stall rest. But he now lives a very stress free life out in the pasture with friends. He is simply a high maintenance, expensive, pasture pet at this point, living out his retirement. (Even though his riding career didn’t last for a year 🤣) 3. Alfalfa hay is on the DO NOT feed list for HYPP horses and is highly advised against, due to it typically having the highest potassium content as compared to grass hays (although the best thing to do is to test your hay). That is why I feed Timothy grass hay, as that is considered the best option for HYPP horses in terms of potassium %. Additionally, I also soak for 1 hour so it is almost completely potassium free. Purina Omelene is a textured feed that was recommended by my vet. (Textured feeds are also highly recommended over pelleted feeds for HYPP horses). He was getting Purina Strategy Healthy Edge, but she recommended to change to this due to a lower potassium content and high starch content. There is detailed information about this on Purina’s website on HYPP, but Purina uses an oil based molasses which is safe for HYPP. The high starch content can act as karo syrup would. So, during feed time, the high sugar can create an insulin spike and help put potassium back into the cells. This grain as worked well for him so far especially considering he is a moderate keeper. Oats are a good option, which he is also getting. There is also oats in Purina Omelene. 4. It is still unknown today why some horses are more symptomatic than others. Meaning, we still don’t 100% know what is exactly causing these attacks. I have linked sources in the description with the latest research. Explain to me the reason why when my horse has an attack, it seems to affect his respiratory, and he has never tied up or collapsed. But when my friend’s horse Phoneix has an attack, he ties completely until he collapses, and has never been affected in the respiratory aspect. He has also shown symptoms his whole life, while Deuce has not. They both have been fed HYPP safe diets, just not treated with medication. Explain to me why some horses are fed completely incorrect diets for this disease, yet they aren’t as symptomatic (YET). Explain to me why most people do not soak their HYPP horse’s hay (which is the most reliable method for decreasing daily potassium) yet some horses continue to show symptoms and others don’t. Or, explain the horses that are seemingly asymptomatic, but the owners wake up one morning to the horse dead in its stall…That story has repeated itself so many times, and it’s a tragic one that many share. It could have been me also, had I never done my due diligence. The night where I came to the barn and Deuce was having loud respiratory noises, no barametric change had happened, and he did not seem stressed with me. He was just in his stall causally eating his hay, like nothing was happening. You can see as I pull him out of the stall, he was still trying to eat hay off of the floor. The truth is, as I said, the disease is full of uncertainty. You could go to every absolute measure of preventing an attack, and still not be able to manage the disease.

Forgive my possible ignorance here, but I believe gabapentin is use for pain relief for nerves, which would not apply to HYPP horses. Acetazolamide has many different uses within people and animals, and one of them is actually to treat epileptic seizures.

I can't imagine what you are going through, both you and your horse are in incredible! You are incredible to get this information out there! I remember back in the 1970/s when this was first found, not much was known about it but I also remember it was downplayed as not being a big thing. Quarter Horses were big business and much of it was downplayed even when it was found how serious it actually was. Too much money was, and still is involved, and we all know how that works! Of course people still breed these horses and that is a crime. Any horse that has Impressive should not be bred but that will never happen, money will always rule. After all these years nothing has changed and it never will, buyer beware! So sad!

Not too long ago Terry Bradshaw (former quarterback and now sports announcer) had a dispersal sale of most, if not all, of his breeding stock quarter horses. I was shocked to see that all of the brood mares that I saw being sold were HYPP NH. I couldn’t believe my eyes! All of them!! HYPP is absolutely still out there. Have QH & paints you are considering buying tested (I use UC Davis) before purchase! I also know of a horse that died from HYPP (12 yo QH mare). She collapsed, seized and had to be put down on the spot. It was horrific.

I'm really glad you posted this, and I hope your video gains more traction. HYPP truly has not been taken seriously enough. I was given a QH about 15 years ago as a kid when owner went off to college. Sure enough, Impressive-bred, N/H. He had mild episodes at the time, and even through strict diet management, each attack did get worse. He passed away of cardiac arrest in the midst of an HYPP attack and the vet had strong suspicions that it was directly related to HYPP (heart is a muscle, and muscle is required for respiratory function). I used to be passionate about being anti-breeding N/H horses, but at that point, those in the industry would just shrug it off or tell me that I didn't know what I was talking about. The amount of nonchalance surrounding the issue was frustrating. Thanks for continuing the education. Hopefully this genetic disease will be a thing of the past during our lifetime.

HYPP is not going away anytime soon, so I hope you keep advocating. I have many friends with NH horses going through the same thing. It is always tragic because these horses end up having the best personalities and usually become out heart horses. I am also sorry to hear about your friend.
