The fact you didn't destroy the engine after ingesting so much water is probably the most impressive part of this whole video.

This guy isn't even aware that the ural has reverse. as for it being unreliable they pumped water out of the cylinders and it ran...pretty good in my eyes!

Worth noting: The Ural in the video is a 2013 model, if not older. As of the 2014 model year, all Urals have electronic fuel injection and disc brakes on all three wheels. There have been a lot of other, less visible changes in recent years as well. The technology in newer models is starting to resemble that of (early) 21st century bikes.

so floding an engine with water is it's inherented fault? i thought that happens to any vehicle. put water in the engine and it dies.

I bought a Ural last year. After about 6 months I got rid of my Harley, don't miss it even a little. The Ural has become my primary daily transport. I've never had to use the two wheel drive on the road, it handles snow and ice with ease. I haul everything from the grandkids to lumber, 8 foot sticks is the max length I'll cary but it could do 12s. I live in the country and anywhere I go is a minimun of 40 or 50 miles. It's not for everyone, but sidecars in general are not for everyone. Build quality isn't great, they are still built by hand. As far as reliability, do your maintenance and you'll most likely not have any problems, if you do have a problem you can most likely fix it along the road, no dealer needed. As for your dirt bike doing what the Ural can do, sure, but can you carry two other people or you dog (I prefer dogs to people) and enough camping gear for extended cross country travel? I suspect not.

Back in 2008, I took my 2007 GearUp all over Alaska, into the Yukon and Northwest Territories. Across the Arctic Circle - twice, and all the way up to Prudhoe Bay in Alaska and Inuvik in the NWT. I had ZERO problems. Miss that moto more than any other bike I've ever owned.

I own a Ural gear up and it is amazing off road. Never got it stuck to the point I couldn't get it out on its own power. Knowing that it has a reverse is a huge plus that would have helped you from getting stuck as much. And as far as having weight in the sidecar it's only helpful when at moderate to higher speeds when cornering to prevent flying the chair.

I have a 2007 Ural Gear-Up that I bought brand new. The very first thing that happened at the dealer was that he took me out in a parking lot and taught the basics on how to ride a “rig”…..that’s what you call a motorcycle with a sidecar……learning the controls was easy. It was learning the geometry (moving your body to help steer the machine) that took some getting used to. He had me “ flying the chair” in short order. After a couple of hours he took me out in a large field where I learned that the 2WD feature is best utilized on loose or slippery surfaces but is not needed all the time….. only when you need it. Only then did a take it home. Whenever someone (who has no experience ride a rig) asks to ride my rig, I ask them “can you forget EVERYTHING that you know about riding a motorcycle in the next ten seconds?” When they answer “no” I then tell them “DO NOT come out of first gear and DO NOT try to backup.

There is a difference in opinion between what reliability is in Russia and in the west. The West's opinion of reliable is things don't often fail. In Russia reliability is when things fail they are easy to fix. This is very well shown in Russian vehicles, firearms, and watches.

I had one in Cuba, did u know they have reverse gear? It is on your right foot between the brake and the rear axel... ;)

In these videos where "the water did go over the tank" they acually used rised air intake block (which had the actual intake around the steering bar), and you were using stock one. No wonder it stalled.

I've had one of these for 9 years and it's the best money I've ever wasted, and yes, the Ural is better than the quad you bought off Amazon because it's street legal and can cruise all day long at 80 or 90 km with no issues.

I owned a 2011 gear up for years. I was stationed in Hawaii and it was my daily driver. For me it was nothing short of dependable. I adjusted the valves once and synced the carbs, other than that no problems(had to change the jets on the trail when taking it up past 9000ft). I loaded the sidecar up with lumber. Rode through monsoons, took it through snow, rode with two additional passengers(had the second seat), rode highways at 65mph. Great bike. My wife and I miss it.

A guy got featured on the news a few years ago for driving his Ural during a blizzard to work around Indianapolis. They're pretty neat motorcycles!

Okay guys i have to say it, this is by FAR my most favorite video of yours, and I watched a lot of them!!! Love this specific content!!! Love love love! I ride a 59 Panhead and believe it or not, some of this stuff that you do, minus the deep muddy waters, I do with my pan as well, and I just love watching other people doing all terrain fun with their different bikes.

Personally I love the Urals, i've had two so far and the one I own now is the gear up, its full injected and has some other upgrades that the one on the video dosen't have. its never broken down on me and runs like a champ... the only problem with it though is that its slow, like to slow.

It is just the Russian way of thinking. When you live in a very remote area, your vehicle has to be capable to overcome almost every difficulty or obstacle you could come across in any environment. Like Siberia, where people say that 'there are no roads, just general directions'. So the vehicle must have outstanding terrain capabilities, easy to maintain and be durable. I drive the UAZ 452 'Bukhanka', which is a Russian 4x4 van built by those same principles. Goes anywhere, and is hold togegether by large nuts and bolts of 2 or 3 sizes. Maintenance and repairs require only a simple toolbox and can be done by anyone. I like this approach, and if I were into driving motorcycles I certainly would own a Ural. I love this video, and the Ural.

I live in canada and bought a ural to ride in the winter while my harley was hibernating. It was a hoot to drive in the snow and i used it as my daily driver for 3 winters and never had an issue with it other than i had to re-jet it to ride in the cold temps. If you can fix your lawn mower you can work on one of these

I have an 04 tourist. I bought it in Dallas and drove it 400 miles to Corpus Christ. 4 days later I drove it to New Mexico , 1500 mi round trip. Only problem was two tire failures, fixed them on the side of the road. The Japanese motorcycles and made to not break down. The Russian philosophy is, they make the motorcycle so it can be fixed on the road if it breaks down. It's had minor problems but never left me stranded.....so far.

I'v had 2 of these bikes, 2000 patrole and a 2005 Gear-Up . The Patrol was a 650 cc and it was only $9000 I had to work on it and that was fun for me. The 2005 is a 750 cc and still is a great runner, I have had to do anything to it, I ride it in the winter which is taxing some times but it get's me where I need to go and back home, I'm only 73 and will be riding till I leave this world

The reason why Ural bikes get such poor reputation is probably because people, such as this, uses it as a quad, rather than a sidecar bike. It isn't meant for plowing mudholes. Do the same with one of your beloved Harleys and see how it fares. :) Got a -86 Dnepr Mt16 myself. Runs great in the conditions it was designed for: poor roads. They just need more lovin' than modern bikes.

When I was in Russia with my first wife, we were in St Peters burg and her mother new husband needed to get a new engine for his Lada beck to the village which was 1100km away, they called a friend who arrived on a ural, they basically put the engine block in the trunk behind the seat, the cylinder head below his legs, and he went to sleep on the journey back because he had just rode 1100km and her mothers husband rode back 1100km without a break. Those guys were super human, Valodia my wife's mums husband had a photo receiving a medal from General Kalasnikov, I had to admire him. I realised something travelling there, Russians are really lovely people , its politics that get in the way.

About time you bought a real bike. Haven't had any major troubles with the previous 2 or our current 2 rigs. My only real complaint is they need a lower 1st gear and 5 speeds forward. Both myself and wife ride and go places "Urals can't go" like road trips. Our longest single trip is about 3500 miles. We've put almost 40,000 miles down riding Urals in the past 4 years. Those videos in the river were specially prepared bikes with snorkels piped into the sidecar which was sealed. I've only ever had one sort of major on road problem and much like you, it was my own fault, I forgot to torque the rear axle nut, but I caught it and swapped to the spare, kept on going. Always buy the newest Ural you can afford, they get better and better as the years go on. We have 2017 Urals now, the 2020 Ural has major improvements even over ours. I liken a Ural to a big woman, when you dance with her, let her lead or she'll kill you. Ride on, be safe!

Fantastic video my man! Had me riveted. My Mum used to tell me stories of when she and my Father would ride from London to Wales with her in the sidecar. They were dirt poor but she loved the journeys they took together. Shame that my Father turned out to be a bell-end!!

My Ural has never broken down or stranded me in nearly tens years of riding on-road and off-road with it.

I have a 2020 gear up Sahara. Many upgrades and tweaks have been made in the last decade to sort of bring the Ural into the 21st century sort of speak. Brembo disc brakes at all 3 points of contact, fuel injection over carbs, redesigned air box, universal hubs for all 4 tires (spare), LED lighting, oversized cylinder fins for additional cooling efficiency... the list goes on. It is the jeep of motorcycles. It takes time to "learn" the Ural but once you do, I would deem it unstoppable especially when a winch is mounted.

Here in finland Ural guys have a saying: there isn't such deep hole where ural hasn't rose up, it's good to have one in grave when the time comes 😎🤘 rocknroll and peace to everyone😄😂

The quality of a particular Ural depends on the WOV level on the factory that day. WOV = Workers On Vodka.

You need to take it on an actual road trip. Long distance, back roads, dirt roads, class 6 roads and trails. Like you said it did all the same things a cheap atv did. The ATV is not road legal, the whole point of them is to cross variable conditions and surfaces both on and off road. It will never beat a machine when it is going up against one purpose made for the single terrain at hand. It won't beat an off road bike off road, nor an on road bike on road. It is made to do so so across all surfaces. Take it across all surfaces.

I live in Lancaster, PA and I bought a Ural a few weeks ago. It’s AWESOME. I keep describing it as a “smile machine.” I’m not saying it’s the best bike out there from a performance perspective, and I’m suggesting it will be as reliable as the Harley I sold to pay for the Ural, but I’m certain I’m going to enjoy every second with this thing! Had a Ural for a couple of years. Alway liked riding it in the snow. They looks I would get while riding in traffic during a snow storm was classic.

I had the Ural's Father a Dnepr 650 and absolutely loved it ... Urals are pretty fun and you can tune the unreliable out of them "unless" you get the very unlucky flywheel.

I think you miss half the point of the Ural. Yes it's a rough and ready off roader. But you can also load up the side car with camping gear and go to a campground 100 miles away and camp for the weekend while getting in some mild offroading. Plus you can do your weekly grocery shopping in a Ural. It's good offroad, it works in most weather, and it's relatively practical to live with as long as you have access to roads with speed limits of 55mph and under. It's one option for the man who loves bikes, and doesnt want to buy a car. Plus, it's cheaper than other options such as the CanAm Spyder RT Limited. But after checking Urals prices I dont know if I'd recommend it, a Gear Up 2wd used to be like 11 to 13K, I would never pay 17K+

I need one of these, my gf has arthrogryposis and is in a wheelchair, don't think she could ride on the back of a bike, but a side car would be perfect.

Bought a used Ural last year and have had a blast. Had one problem with it, but it wasn't bad enough to get stranded. Just had to fix something. Fun to ride. Great for errands. And the UDF (Ural delay factor) is definitely a real thing!

I had fun just watching you guys. Were it not for my advanced age and the bike's hefty price tag, I'd be all in on owning one - with the sidecar, of course.

Fondly nicknamed "The Urinal", by bikers in Britain. We also had the "Dnieper" sold in Britain, which was nicknamed "The Diaper" by UK bikers. From the 1960's to 1980's, the following Soviet bikes were sold in Britain: Voskhod 175 IZH 350 Jupiter (twin) IZH 350 Saturn (Single) Ural 650 Dnieper 750

The "Indiana Jones" Sidecar Motorcycle used in the Last Crusade was a KMZ Dnepr MT-11, not an IMZ Ural. The Ural was made for Civilian sales while the Dnepr was made for Military service. The Dnepr motorcycles are built heavier and are slower than the Urals. Also the engines are different. Dnepr engines have a centrifugal military type oil filter connected to the crankshaft inside the engine front cover. It purifies the oil as the engine crankshaft spins. It's serviced every 10,000 Km. The Dnepr transmission also has reverse but also is a semi-automatic design. When pressing down on the shifter with the toe or heel pads the clutch is automatically disengaged so you can keep your left hand firmly on the left hand grip so you don't need to pull in the hand clutch lever to shift up or down. The two wheel drive Dnepr is full time two wheel drive unlike the Ural that requires engaging a locking lever to engage the sidecar wheel. The two wheel drive system on Dnepr's is not a simple differential type system. It's like a Rokon 2 wheel drive 2 wheel motorcycle. There is a gear box on the motorcycle rear wheel and another on the sidecar wheel with a freewheel. The sidecar wheel reduction has a lower gear ratio than the gear box on the motorcycle wheel. The sidecar wheel "freewheels" when the motorcycle wheel is not losing traction. When the motorcycle wheel loses traction the sidecar wheel "catches up" and starts providing traction at a lower gear ratio. Not only has the two wheel drive automatically activated it's also like shifting to a lower gear automatically as well. In 1992 after the collapse of the Soviet Union (Christmas day 1991) Ukraine exported Dnepr Motorcycles worldwide with many finding their way into the USA. I have one myself. KMZ no longer produces Dnepr Motorcycles but parts are still being made for them and you can even buy a "restored" Dnepr Motorcycle today. Arbalet Motorcycles keeps a few Dniepr Motorcycles available for sale in their Nebraska warehouse which have a modern 800cc engine with a spin on type oil filter with reverse and 5 forward speeds and electric start. I have a 2002 harley road king and a 2021 URAL CT....one wheel drive.....I love it.....really fun to drive around town.....just ordered some black turn out pipes for it to get rid of the big pontoons.....and hopefully get a better sound......

I've owned one of these! An '89 Dnepr 650-but it was a solo! No sidecar, but still the reverse gear. Brakes weren't great and it was slow to change direction. But despite bad carburettors it ran faultlessly in all sorts of weather. What I'd like is a 2WW Zündapp 750 combination. Now those really are the business!

Hi. Ural owner here. Glad you finally figured out it had a reverse, even if it was too late. I was curious about this since seeing the Ural in the back of a few videos and Sean has mentioned on more than one occasion that he didn’t like Urals. I think his overall experience and takeaway was fair. While it may have been designed for off road use in the 40s, as Sean mentioned, today that is not really it’s major role. It’s major role is to have fun and look kinda weird doing it, not unlike a Grom. There is something Ural pilots (I believe the preferred silly term for Ural riders) call the UDF - Ural Delay Factor. Every stop will take 10-15 more minutes because people are always asking to take pictures or talk about it. That’s kinda the whole point of it all- it’s just fun. Also, I was sad to not see Sean try to fly the chair- drive it with the chair in the air. It is an inevitability- take a right turn hard enough and you’ll be on two wheels with a several hundred pound weight on your side. It is important to train purposefully flying the chair so when it happens it’s not a cause for a panic attack. I’d love to see Sean do another video on this.

My grandmother used to ride a ic 350 before she had a car. It was my grandfather's, he used to ride it to work. Then it broke down and he dissasembled it and sold parts of it, still have some stuff left of it

I don’t recall the scene where Indy needed a rain shelter for his conversation. He may have attempted to start an obviously inundated engine- but he was, after all, an archaeologist… not a motorhead (who should know better).

I’d love to see that Ural side by side with a standard adv on that course. (Like a perhaps aKawasaki Versys or Honda cb500x?)

I have 2 . A 2000 tourist And a 2012 gear up. These make my 5th and 6th Ural . I absolutely love them. Crude. Archaic. Not the MOST reliable. But absolutely worth it.

My daily ride is a 2008 Ural Patrol. Love the thing. U can pack it to the hilt. Keep up on your maintenance and you will never walk.

I rode a 75/5 BMW for 10 years. So easy to work on even I could do it. Head on collision at 45 mph. The bike still got me home. One cylinder and tire rubbing on forks and casing. ural is the same.

I may not be a mechanic by trade, but I did get an A in high school Auto Tech. You pull water into the cylinder of a running engine, you're lucky if you don't crack the head/block. Unlike air, water doesn't compress. Those bikes you saw in the videos would have had snorkels on them.

About 3 years ago I traded an old Honda 350 twin for a 2000 Patrol, last year for 650cc and drum brake, first year for electric start, Keihin CV carbs. I spent $500 to replace the old Russian alternator ("the hand grenade") with a Nippon Denso. I've been using it ever since to run errands around town. It is a total blast and dead reliable, although it always sounds like it's about to explode. I've done nothing to it in that time except change the oil once and adjust the front brake to get slightly less terrible stopping power. I plan a half block ahead for stops, no problem so far. I've never put a battery charger on it even though most trips are short. It starts first kick most of the time, even in cold weather when it hasn't been run in a month or more. I use the electric start now and then and it works fine too. It lives outside, as my garage is full of motorcycles. It has knobbies on all three wheels and is brilliant on snowy, icy roads. I live in the foothills of the Rockies in Colorado so it gets used all year round. I've put it in two-wheel drive maybe twice. It goes very well with the single drive unless the snow is pretty deep, say, more than about 8 inches. I'm 71 so this doesn't matter much to me anymore, but a Ural sidecar is the greatest chick magnet ever invented. Strange women are always coming up in the parking lot and admiring it and I'm sure at least half of them would hop in if invited. In this contest, the Ural leaves your crotch rocket power cruiser street tracker bobber wang-extender in the dust. I wish I'd known that when I was 22.
