There are so many slight variations in the 58 mm range. for most uses the blade, file and scissors are the most useful tools. By the time you get to the Mini-champ most question at least one of the tools added. Swapping out one of the slots for tweeters or toothpick you get the pen (Signature) or light (Swisslite) or both (Signature-Lite). Adding the Philips multi-tool we have the Rambler. Then swapping out one slot for tweeters or toothpick Manager (pen), Midnight Manager (pen and torch). Going to five sets of tools the Mini-champ has one slot for tweeters and the other side for the pen. The Midnight Mini-Champ with pen and flash-light but not tweeters or tooth pick. To retain the tweeters, toothpick and alternative fire-stick, you can make a simple sleeve case with a slot for one to three scale tools.

It's incredible when you think about the options that Victorinox offers and that most of the choices they make sell well enough to keep them in constant production. When it comes down to it, you're always a step up if you carry a SAK regardless of which model.

But now I continually catch myself saying stuff that seems ridiculous at the moment and I enjoy calling it out--kind of like teasing myself. I'm glad I'm not the only one laughing. Thanks a lot for the video. Honestly, every SAK will get hate and criticism online, but I see why this little guy shines. I carry a swiss champ but for some reason I'm drawn to this little guy, must be that's all I'd need around the house, and more. I love how you open the combo tool to enter "pen mode" that's clever! I guess the sheer amount of choice of SAKs make the conversation endless, but I would prefer this model to the mini champ any day.

The Manager "classic" is one of my favorites saks, and objectively one with the best combination of tools in the Victorinox catalog. It's a shame that the company has officially discontinued it in 2023, however, I suspect that due to popular demand, the company will reincorporate it into its catalog in the future, well, hopefully.

A lot of the premium bottle beers and original glass bottle colas require you to have a bottle opener which is one of the reasons some wallet makers have bottle openers on their wallets unless of course you use your neighbors coffee table to open the bottle

I don't think the Cadet and Manager are comparable knives for the outstanding difference in length. With the Cadet you can peel fruit, cut rope, cigars, and do other bigger jobs. With the Manager's knife blade, you'll be limited to cutting packages and other much smaller jobs. I think the Manager is comparable with all other 58mm SAKs only, such as the Classic, Minichamp, Rambler, and so on.
@CurlysCurated
@CurlysCurated Жыл бұрын
Agreed. The size different is a big factor. I think what sets the manager apart for me is the toolset. It’s what I find most useful. But that what’s great about SAKs, there’s almost a tool configuration for everyone. Also I don’t work about the blade size because I also carry a full sized pocket knife on my hip.

I wanted to get a manager but they were either sold out or ridiculously expensive where I live. Wanted to ask a friend to bring me one from Germany but they cannot be found there already, discontinued. So I opted for a Rambler which seems to be the same except for the pen which would be great to have...

1. I gotta have a toothpick. 2. Little blade for delicate work, fine, but the slip joint springs on these little gems are very light, so be extra careful. 3. Scissors are amazing but sometimes a slightly larger pair would be handy. My solution is to carry the Midnight Manager and a "Compact". Between these two, I have all the tools I'm most likely to need. If I could only carry one, it would be the little one, and I'd put some toothpicks in my pocket somewhere. Everybody has to figure out for themselves the stuff they can't live without, there are no wrong choices.

" The recommended standard EDC Swiss Army Knife is often the Cadet " By whom? I am a lifelong Swiss Army Knife Aficionado & collector with some 220 SAK's ( 200 plus Victorinox & 20 Wengers of which 120 plus are 58mm decorative scaled collectables ). The Cadet is far from being the recommended standard EDC Swiss Army Knife, it is a Gentleman's pocket carry knife being small & light enough to pocket carry even in shorts & fits also in the 5th pocket of a pair of jeans. I had in the past 5 Cadets, I currently have 2 - one black scaled one with the pre-2018 textured ( diamond dust like ) nail file & one aqua blue 2020 limited edition Cadet with the post 2018 cross cut nail file now found on the Cadet & new built 84mm Sportsman. Its hard to say what is the most recommended SAK but the 58mm size out sell all other sizes followed by the number one SAK with the most practical set of tools is a 91mm SAK - the Huntsman & then the number two - the Climber , these 2 outsell all other 91mm models , other popular 91mm best sellers are the Spartan, Compact, Tinker, Swiss Champ, Explorer & the Cyber-Tool series. When it comes to Alox SAK's its not the 84mm Cadet but the 93mm Pioneer series - the most popular being the Pioneer, Pioneer Solo ( AKA Swiss Army 1 ) the Pioneer X, the Farmer & increasingly the Farmer X . In the 84mm size the most popular are the Sportsman, Bantam, Waiter, Tourist & recruit & the Alox 84mm Bantam which far outsells the Cadet. Now back to the 58mm Manager - I own one but rarely pocket carry it or the Rambler as I have 2 of the Midnite Managers (one Sapphire blue & one SilverTech scaled), an original model Mini-Champ 1st version, a later & current model Mini-Champ, a red scaled Midnite Mini-Champ & a hybrid SilverTech scaled Midnite Mini-Champ as my default keyring SAK . I have carried over the last 2 decades either a Midnite Manager or a Midnite Mini-Champ on my key ring & currently I use the hybrid SilverTech scaled Midnite Mini-Champ. My EDC rotation is always 2 knives & the 2nd knife is a larger SAK from 84mm to 111mm size or from another brand such as Buck, Case XX, Rough Ryder, Civivi, Kershaw etc as despite being a lifelong SAK Aficionado I do have almost 100 other brand knives from the small to the large.

How’s that translucent side on the midnight manage? I wouldn’t doubt it’s as robust as the regular material but something about the translucence has always made me cautious of it thinking it might be more fragile. Have you ever owned an Electrician? I live the look of the small sheepsfoot blade and I’d love to see that on more of this knives.
@stevesinclair4159
@stevesinclair4159 Жыл бұрын
@@CurlysCurated I find no fragility on the scales of my SilverTech translucent scaled Midnite Manager. My one is a 2nd hand one bought on eBay & it was a promotional giveaway model for a Swiss logistics company called Thurmatik with its name etched in black on the pen side scale ( Victorinox only sells standard red & sapphire blue & rubi red translucent models to the public ), my other MM is the standard red scaled one. I don't own the Alox Electrician & I don't care for the sheepsfoot blade or the Spey blade. My favorite blade shapes on all knives not just SAK's are the Clip Point ( including the modified California / Skinner clip point blades ) the Wharncliffe & the Spearpoint ( and in particular the Wenger style Spearpoint with its slightly extended belly shape compared to the standard straight Victorinox Spearpoint blade )

You say "Cadet". Do you mean "Classic?" Cadet is an 84mm frame, no scissors, no scale tools. Classic is the cheapest Victorinox, 58mm, same as the one you are showing, with scale tools, and all the tools your featured knife has, minus the phillips/cap lifter.

Yup. You’re totally right. Not sure why Cadet got into my head. Not really a fan of the toolset on the cadet either tbh. You bring up a good point about the classic being the cheapest-maybe that’s why it gets recommended so often. Maybe a good question is whether the $20 difference between the two is worth the difference in tools. What do you think?

The function is definitely lacking but I think my point (which I probably didn’t make well) is that for that size (which makes easy to EDC for anyone) it cover a fair amount of basic uses. At the very least it much better than the classic (though for some reason I kept saying cadet 😂)

I carry a Manager on my keychain and I use it every day. The mini Philips is very handy and the small blade is great for opening packages, cutting straps etc. The scissors are handy for nail trimming as is the file. I don't think there is anything in this size range that is this robust and useful.
