On June 8th of this year my 48 year old daughter was killed by her fiance in a domestic violence incident. She lived in a city 1200 miles from me. I cannot travel there to deal with things nor could I afford a prolonged stay. The DA has not yet evaluated the case for prosecution and it could be many more months before that happens. None of that is what is particularly troubling me. My daughter was with this man for 12 years and I have come to realize that they were having problems she never discussed with me. She always wanted me to think he was a terrific guy. I was handling life pretty well for awhile. I did plenty of crying and grieving, but I was functioning. Then her birthday came on September 23rd, the first one since she died. My birthday was one week later on the 30th. I had a complete meltdown that day. My husband had planned to take me out to dinner, but I was so anguished that I couldn't even get dressed. Today is October 4th and I've done practically nothing for over 10 days. I can't seem to snap out of this. I'm going to a peer-to-peer group therapy once a month and private therapy as well. I had an appointment today, but I canceled it. I don't really like my therapist or find her suggestions very helpful. It's a chore to explain things to her and she wastes my time talking about herself. She has never lost a child and she doesn't seem to get that it is a very specific grief distinct from other types of grief. I'm 75 now and I feel like there's nothing to look forward to. I'm a Christian and I'm trusting God about everything, but I still have to push myself to do the simplest tasks like bathing or making the bed. I don't know how to accept my grief but continue to live. I know my daughter would want me to take care of myself and try to be happy. I will see her again someday. But for now, I have NO energy. 😥

I am so thankful that I found your channel. We just lost our 4th son, age 42 suddenly on November 25, 2020. He had depression and health issues but he was feeling a bit better and went on a camping trip. On the way back he pulled over at a service station, reclined his seat back and passed away. The waiting on the autopsy results is so difficult as it could be mid March before we know. My husband and I are in a very bad state of mind. What you explained in the video was helpful though. I subscribed! Thank you !

I've had clinical depression my whole life, as well as other serious health issues too. Then my partner & caregiver (he'd only just turned 30) died suddenly, alone on my bed - and my mum found him the next day like that. It's been 20 months now since his death, and I'm still finding it extremely difficult to motivate myself to do anything at all really. I'm on medication, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything. Before he died, at least we/I could listen to music, now I find myself not even able to do that. He was a music producer and music was 'our thing', now I don't even enjoy that, and if I hear one of our favourite songs, it triggers me and I become very angry. I'm yet to be able to find a very good counsellor over here in Australia - one that absolutely understands grief. It's useless talking to somebody that doesn't get it. Thank you so much for this ❤

I'm sorry for your losses . Most communities have grief support groups, especially through hospice assuming that one of your losses involves a death. But with the symptoms you describe, at the very least, you should talk to your doctor about them to see what kind of support he might be able to provide for you or find for you. I wish you the best.

HI, Shawna. I am sorry for the loss of your friend. The intensity of grieving is after related to how central the person was in your life. What do you consider "prolonged" grief or depression?
@Serenityonlinetherapy
@Serenityonlinetherapy 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Abby. Well, this video should help you differentiate the grief of depression from clinical depression. As far as what a "prolonged" period of time is that might indicate one needs help in grieving, there is no set time frame. However, if you've viewed my videos on the stages of grief and you still feel stuck or frustrated with the pace of your grieving, then you should talk with a grief counselor to help you figure out what is going on. It could be that you are stuck, or that maybe you have unrealistic expectations as to how grieving should progress. I hope this helps.

@@Serenityonlinetherapy I'm actually more curious for a friend of mine. She lost her husband and many already told her to "get over it" by 3 months...and I encouraged her to take as long as she needed. She has been in a grief group, but I'm not sure what it's like. Because now we are going on to 3 years and she is still miserable, still has not removed any of his things and still plays the "no one helps the poor widow" card. Even I am getting tired of it now and am not sure how to help her?
@Serenityonlinetherapy
@Serenityonlinetherapy 5 жыл бұрын
@@abbykoop5363 Hi, Abby. It is important that you accept that you can not fix your friend. It is her journey through grief. You can listen and you can offer support, but you can't do it for her. And you should not take responsibility (in your own mind) for healing her. I am glad she is getting support from a grief group. I know from working with many clients grieving traumatic losses (unexpected, tragic, or going against the natural way of things such as the loss of a child) that it can take 3 years or longer to completely find one's way back to life in the here and now. If you friends says she feels stuck, then maybe you could suggest that she see an individual grief counselor.
