I liked hearing the camera man make a contribution - if the person behind the camera has Judo knowledge, and they're there listening to the conversation, no reason not have to them provide some input if it comes to them. It only makes the conversation better, I'd like to see more of that.

I think sumi gaeshi is superior for ground work entry because you can smoothly transition to a pin.

At my gym we train tomoe nage as a throw. I never thought of using it as a set up for the de la Riva like that. We also drill ko Uchi gari and de ashi barai a lot. I love your videos because I learn all kinds of tricks.

Hey Shintaro, I wanted to thank you for your content. I've been trying to incorporate no-gi judo into my grappling game for a while and today I was able to hit a big standing Ippon Seoi Nage from collar tie and a Tai Otoshi thanks to your videos. I'm only a white belt, but I'm starting to get it. Anyways, I just wanted to say thanks for the great content, it's been a massive help!

This was excellent. Reminded me of back when I worked as an instructor for my sensei & we'd stay after hours just slowing techniques down, brainstorming what ifs/counters we experienced, working through potential solutions then attempting them under pressure. This is how our martial arts continue to evolve & grow.

Recently, I've been aiming for Tomoe Nage. There are times where I'm doing it with setups and speed/timing and others, it's a slow, foot on the hip, guard pull and if I'm in poaition, lift and throw. If I miss the throw, I have tripod sweeps or pull them into my triangle. That whole thing I just said is what I think sums up the video.

Maybe someone will find it interesting - Natsumi Tsunoda, possibly the best Tomoe Nage specialist on World Judo scene at the moment, uploaded a video on her new YT channel from the Tomoe seminar she had (only Japanese though). It's also very interesting to see watch fights, as she either uses Tomoe as her main throw or as a setup for transitioning into Juji. I don't remember her getting ever penalized for pulling guard either.

White belt Jiu-jitsu guy here, I recently tried Tomoe Nage in competition! You can see the video on my channel. There it ended up being half yoko tomoe nage/ half butterfly sweep because I hooked his leg instead of placing it on his hip but it worked out! I’ve loved tomoe nage for jiujitsu from the first time I saw it. I look to do it in any position I can.

Thank you for walking the line between Judo and Bjj as a 56 yr old four stripe white belt i really appreciate the exposure to the techniques you present. Yes sometimes confusing as to where to introduce into my roll.

My first encounter with a BJJ guard pull was when I was in college in the nineties. He just dropped straight into an arm bar. I pulled him up for a reset, and eventually won, but I now have bone spurs in the elbow. Worth it. Not really.

Jiu-Jitsu guy here, no Judo experience and taught all takedowns/throws learned from a Jiu-Jitsu guy. I learned Tomoe Nage from Shintaro on KZfaq- there's a video where he demonstrates 3 versions I think. In class I learned a Drop Seoi Nage, but i hate turning my back, therefore hesitate, therefore often get countered with my back taken in Jiu-Jitsu. My knowledge is extremely rudimentary, but I've pulled off Tomoe Nage multiple times having just learned it from Shintaro's video. If I'm getting any momentum from my opponent towards me at all, and I have a collar and arm, I'm turning sideways, dropping, pulling, and going for Tomoe. When I've failed I'm in guard, but no mistake I'm trying to send them over me and follow into a position of greater advantage. I've had good success, granted amongst other Jiu-Jitsu practitioners. I fried it once on a Judo black lol, oh well guard was a win in my book.

drop seoi nage is very powerful in BJJ, i hit it in my first tournament without every practicing it. it’s a very useful technique and if you are quick and efficient with your hip and feet placement it is very hard to counter. personally i feel like its a technique where you can have a small margin of error and still have a successful throw.

Bjj guys are very easy to throw with Tomoe Nage because most have bad posture.

The first time I've ever seen a Tomoe Nage used in real life was when a fight broke out in Korea's Congress something like 10 years ago. This 50 year old guy grabs this other guy's suit and of all the throws in Judo, uses Tomoe Nage to launch the other guy in the air lol Found the video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l86JaqRh36rPlYk.htmlsi=whcDoRgm6Zv0Jv2M

One thing o love about tomoe nage is that if you want and you are skilled enough, you can roll into top mount with it... Wich is a very useful position to be in... The other thing i love is that if you let go of them and they have no grip on you, you actually can create distance... So basically, you can bith be on top of them or send them away with the same technique with just mininal variations
