Is This the Best Driver's Road in the UK? BMW M2 Competition to Kinlochleven

4 жыл бұрынNestled in the Scottish Highlands, just off the A82 near Glencoe lies one of my all-time favourite driver's roads in the UK. The B863 twists & turns, rises & falls along the shore of Lock Leven to the village of Kinlochleven and then back to the A82 again at Ballachulish.
It isn't particularly wide, you don't reach very high speeds & the corners require a careful approach.
It does, however, keep you busy all the time, is relatively traffic free for this part of the Highlands, and is, in my opinion, one of the most enjoyable roads to drive quickly & safely anywhere in the UK.

I've watched this video several times now and in my opinion it is a breathtaking example of driving with speed, finesse and an obvious skill set that makes it safe and enjoyable. Some people may scoff at that but anyone can point and shoot but not everyone does it with all the driving elements and skills that make you a safe driver.👍

I had the pleasure of driving this road last year in a fully loaded LDV minibus. It was a very different experience!

Myself & Family are from the Ballachulish and Fort William area; it's quite obvious when you're behind a visitor or local resident by how they drive. I have to say - Reg drives like a local resident (no pun intended with the use of his surname!). Always nice to watch these vids, keep up the good work Reg.

Awesome looking road, i need to visit Scotland, we have some good roads in the Peak District but they are extremely busy and nothing compared to this!

I drive it any time I pop up to Scotland it’s like a fairground ride with all the dips and cambers amazing road and you don’t even have to be going fast to enjoy it

The A4120, on the opposite side of the Rheidol valley to the A44 to Aberystwyth, is one of my favourites. It avoids the jams in Aber and the HGV train on the trunk route. Many parts remind me of the mountain sections on the Isle of Man. The western end has a chain of villages so the stretch from it's junction with the A44 (Signpost for Rheidol Valley Railway) to Capel Seion is the best.

Breathtaking drive but always safe! Although I can feel when you are accelerating and decelerating/braking, I would have loved to see the speedometer and tachometer to get a better feel

At 5:57 could you stop in the distance you could see to be clear? Should you be able to, or is it more a case of stop within the distance you could reasonably expect to be clear?

I think at the point you are questioning in the video (5:57), Reg would of already of formed a plan of what to do if a hazard was on the other side of the drop in the road. I dare say it would of involved braking and steering to avoid the hazard. If he had been so unfortunate that a hazard had been on his side of the road and also had a on coming vehicle too, then I dare say he would of had to hit the brakes full on and hope for the best.

@@jordanb97 I think you had better redirect that question to Reg, he was driving after all. My response above was based on what I could see in the video, my own experience and from what I have learned watching Regs videos and carrying the techniques on the road myself.

Hi Reg. Great road btw. Just a little question regarding your overtake at 10:08. This is something I picked up from a Police Driver many years ago and when I've highlighted it on some of my videos people turn their nose up at it. Would you consider a flash of your lights prior to overtaking to let the motorhome known you are coming? Nice to see your M2 being driven properly :) Ashley. Edit for typo.

Yes, I sometimes use a headlight flash in these situations, in much the same way as I used a horn warning earlier in the video. I usually reserve these signals fir situations where I’m uncertain that the vehicle in front is aware of my presence.

Decades ago when I rode motorbikes, the lettering for the main beam on one bike said "Passing".

@@RegLocal Driving protocols (probably wrong word ) seem a bit different in the Highlands. I think you have said it's not needed by the overtakee, but a tap on nearside indicator is quite nice

Thanks for sharing. For me, a favourite road would need to be a lot twistier again and with even more elevation changes, and with better visibility to the sides. But the scenery is stunning.

Looks like the car took off at 5:57! The camera position makes for fantastic viewing. Do you have any experience of defensive driving from your time in the police? In my part of the world it's not uncommon for people to be driven off the road or stopped etc, and hoped you might have some tips to stay safe.

Yeah I had an audible expletive at that one 😂 I’ll remember that jump for when I eventually do this wee road. Heading up to Glencoe with a bunch of super cars and hot hatches early tomorrow but, sadly we’ll not be on this stretch.

Fantastic video ... great to see where you push on and where you hold back and compare to what I might have done. I need to remember that crests need as much respect as blind bends! More like this please :) I’d be nervous of overtaking when the lanes are so narrow and there’s no where to go if the van wobbles. Do you have any tips for figuring out if they’ve seen you?

I always include it whenever I go to the Highlands (12 times and counting). 16 miles of driving heaven aka the 'Scotsburgring'. Another cracking drive is the A93/B976/A939 (Perth to Inverness the proper way). Others are available west and north of the Great Glen (A82). The further you go the less traffic you'll encounter and the sight lines are far better.

The thing that worries me on roads like that ^^^ is animals! No, not the slow motorhomes and tourists, but the furry animals that love to wait and leap out in front of you at every opportunity......

Driving home from work the other day a sheep just standing there as I’m putting together a nice section of corners so yes I agree!

And kangaroos, wombats, possums, koalas, brush turkeys, emus and eagles eating road kill (always just around a bend!)......................

And you never know if you hammer round a bend what if there's a few cyclists strung out across the road

@Max Torque Generally only an issue at night. Sometimes you get sheep in the daytime but they tend to just be standing around and that's covered by ensuring your stopping distance is visible.

One critical observational error .... you drove past one of the best seafood gaffs in the Highlands without stopping for a bowl of Langoustine 😂😂. Cracking road, funny done it loads of times but never in that direction !!!

Simon Hourihan you’re right - the langoustines are brilliant. It used to be a supplier of seafood long before they had a cafe, we stopped there to buy some langoustines on our way home. The guy disappeared into the back and came back with a huge polystyrene box which he put down on the counter, where it started jumping around. We hadn’t bargained for them still being alive. He assured us that they would be fine on the five hour journey back to Leeds, but we should boil and eat them straight away. We had the box in the back of the car were it was very noisy with them clattering around inside all the way home. They were still the best langoustines we’ve ever eaten.

Nice one Reg. I did do that road in snow in an Opel Mantra GT/E in 1985 (winter tyres? what were they?). I hope that you intend to to this part of the world about the same time next year - hopefully I will be allowed out of Oz by then and I can get my 'fix' of good roads after a two and a half year gap - be great to meet up with you at some time.

Awesome road, how would you compare it with the Ribbleshead to Hawes road (one of my favourites). Sounded like the jump knocked the wind out of you, lol. Where is that road by the way?

Like others I noticed the speed over one crest... Lower point of driver vision than the camera would make visibility even worse. No1 lesson is perhaps, we all make mistakes... But I'm also sure that for any random enthusiast drivers, the list of remarks would be a lot longer, and that crest would basically catch most drivers driving their steady 53mph out too with probably a lot worse preparation in case something was behind that crest. Risk free, driving isn't. Stay safe all.

Perhaps, Paul, you learned that this channel is one of my hobbies & I enjoy making & posting a variety of different types of videos depending on the area I'm visiting & the mood I'm in at the time. I mostly post instructional stuff, but I also make travel videos, review cars & motorbikes & occasionally I just like to share a video of an enjoyable drive on a nice road. Sorry if this disappoints...

I’m learning sooo much for re-watching this video, and seeing Reg put the ‘system’ into practice. So many things to spot: are your observations as good as reg? Would you estimate the corner speed correctly? Would you leave yourself enough space for the cheeky little down shift … etc. Could we have a foot-cam next time.. I’m interested to see how much you use the brakes… brilliant video :)

Extremely dangerous driving at a few points here especially 5:57 who knows what could have been there broken down vehicle?, a cyclist?, large animal? Only a matter of time before you go down for manslaughter or murder.
