I use an in-line diffuser from C02Art -- although honestly I suspect that all the in-liner diffusers probably come from the same manufacturer are just rebranded for the shop selling them -- but I'm also using a spray bar as outlet and I left some extra length of tubing from the filter to the tank. This set up has given me good C02 dissolution, at least judging by the drop checker and the plant growth. There's still mist in the tank, but the plants pearl so much that I can't distinguish between O2 bubbles and C02 bubbles anyway. Still, it's good to know all the options and to have them presented so elegantly. Your videos are the best, Mark. I noticed your channel is growing; it's well-deserved.

You captured correctly all the pros and cons. I'm using the co2 reactors for a couple of years. Some i built myself, some i bought. Flow reduction is my main concern. But, after testing some diffusers, noise, additional equipment in the tank, ruined photos because of bubbles...i cam back to reactors. It is a thing of taste, after all.

I like the idea of having less equipment in the tank as well. So I went for a sera flore 500 reactor with bio master 350. I noticed that when the co2 is off, there is water back flow into the co2 tube even I have the check valve between the bubble counter and reactor. The water is actually able to pass the check cable and very close to the bubble counter sometimes. Do you have a check valve in your system? I am wondering if my check valve is faulty or biomaster 350 is able to push water through all check valves? Thank you!

I custom built a CO2 reactor in 1998, for all the reasons outlined. Mine was transparent as I wanted to understand what was going on inside. It worked great. Main reason I did it was you couldn’t buy proper in-tank diffusers bock then (where I lived) so there was a lot of CO2 wastage. I didn’t show many people so it was an unintended secret, I suppose. Is it really such an odd device? To me it’s an obviously superior method.

Was it for information only (ie a way of monitoring for issues) or are you using to control the pH (ie switching on and off the CO2 to keep pH at a set value). Nice video! I have been using CO2 reactors for a long time. My experience is to remove all the media that is inside these reactors, they only reduce the flow tremendously and do not help to dissolve CO2 any faster, CO2 dissolution in water is actually very fast and easy in these reactors, the turbulence created from the inflow on the top of the reactor is actually more then enough to do the job. Misschien iets om uit te proberen voor een volgende update ;)

I used a 2 L pop bottle yeast reactor for a while, and the co2 was fed directly into my sump pump which was connected to an undergravel filter covered with a thin fine filter floss before the gravel (wouldn't really recommend it). I had no co2 bubbles, but the plants improved greatly, though the water became very acidic. I ended up discontinuing it. For some reason, I'm always struggling with ph.

@@marvinnguyen-colorado2018 I have hard alkaline water, which is why I was surprised the co2 had such an effect. I'm still running a co2 yeast reactor, but a much smaller one. Also, the reason why I struggle with ph beyond that is for the opposite reason; the hardness rises over time and so too does the ph. I wanted to create no-water-change tank (or at least limited-water-change), but I have to change water every month or so to keep the hardness down. I'm using water softening pillows from API, but I'm still about ready to just say fuck it and what will be, will be.

Stick the cup upside down and inject co2 manually inside cup and leave it to diffuse slowly until cup gets filled with water again. I'm thinking of doing this when I have more tanks and a small co2 cylinder. Mine now is 6l welding co2 cylinder shared BTW 3 tanks. And a regular top filter and inside pump.

It drove me mad for most of the night tbh lol until I'd had enough at aprox 5am I eventually got up (my aquarium is in my bedroom and the unit is completely open design) i took everything out of the filter and then replaced it all ensuring that each tray was sitting correctly in the one underneath, now my Oase Biomaster is back to being almost silent.

Maybe when you do ur next clean pull out the trays give everything a little shake and then reassemble making sure there's no media sitting under the pre filter tube, or that any of the trays them selves are not sitting right, possibly causing the impellers natural vibration to be resonating off of anything it shouldn't.. I'm sure you'll probably find a vast improvement, These filters are almost silent, or at least should be and with yours being inside a cabinet you shouldn't be hearing anything at all, i sleep 3 feet away from mine and i can't even tell it's on Mj.

Happy to hear my videos are helping you! Regarding feeding fish and shrimp, just a tiny amount once a day is fine. If you forget a day no worries, they can easily go without food for a few days.
@Beregar79
@Beregar79 3 жыл бұрын
It also depends on how many fish you have and what size. As a general rule I feed my fish once a day and let the shrimps eat scraps left by the fish. This includes my betta tank where I just feed the betta. It's going to miss a few morsels which are enough for the shrimp. However I do offer shrimps, plecos, otos and the like zucchini slices and also give shrimps carrots or carrot pellets a few times a month. You can also give them other veggies as long as they have relatively hard texture (i.e. if you give broccoli remove the flower head). I don't buy flakes anymore because of various issues they have (i.e. bloat). Instead of that I've a mix of sinking pellets and sinking granules. Some of the pellets are hard pleco type pellets which last for a longer time while others turn into powder which is foraged by shrimps and fish. Most fish actually forage throughout the tank so they don't eat from surface or bottom alone though there are of course exceptions. Anyhow as for numbers: 1 medium pellet per day (think Sera O-nip or similar) is enough for around a dozen cory sized fish. I usually drop around three pellets into my 180 and 240 liter tanks but they also include some bigger fish like half a dozen farlowella. Add a pinch of granulate mix for other fish which means around 40 glowlight danios in one tank and the same amount of espei and kubotai rasboras in the other. If you are tempted to feed more do a "luxury feeding" once per week (i.e. on sunday) where you feed for example twice a day rather than increasing the daily dose. Anyhow that's how I do it. :) Edit2: Ended up editing out the bad example since I found a better reference image which can be found here: www.indohobby.com/media/wysiwyg/Sera_Bottom_Feeders_Tablets_Fish_Food.jpg If you feed for example omega one shrimp pellets it takes about three of them to match one o-nip. Similarly if you feed for example Sera Viformo Nature type pellet two should cover around a dozen cories and since they are powdery other fishies will get fed on the side too. Vivachips on the other hand are really thin so I'd drop two of them to match one o-nip. Also this is not exact science use roughly "two to three smaller pellets to one medium sized one depending on size of the smaller pellet"

For me, the diffusers never worked in my large 150cm planted tank, no matter how much i inject co2, my co2 checker always remained blue… Then started to use a co2 reactor, on my 1st day the co2 checker turned light green with only a fraction of co2 injection rate.

I made one from a 110 mm grey sewer pipe with 1 screwable cap with 2 hose connectors from the 22 mm in and out hoses. 60 cm long. Costet about 10 euroos. Filled it with pvc balls and water going in from above and out at the bottom. Co2 is getting in through a jbl diffusor mounted at the inlet hose. THE PH PROBE IS IN THE AQUARIUM.... NOT IN THE DIFFUSOR. Thats were you want to measure!!!!!! It works for over a year now with no problems an no bubbles.

In my experience the reduced flow is the biggest con. Not only is the flow reduced but also it's inconsistent. The flow is decreased and it keeps decreasing as the filter media (especially sponges) collect detritus. It technically reduces the flow and, consequently, the amount of dissolved CO2 daily. Perhaps 2 reactors on 2 oversized filters will allow you to avoid this problem, but I was running into problems. After monthly filter maintenance and plant trimming everything looked fine, but then as the filter flow (and CO2) was decreasing and plant mass and greater need for CO2 was increasing, I was running into algae problems. Inconsistent levels of CO2 is worse than low but steady CO2 levels. I finally went for dedicated external pump-CO2 reactor and reconnected my filter for straight filter-tank circulation. Yeah it's an additional pair of hoses but far better results in plant health and overall cleanness of my tank.

Question: can you accomplish a similar result by putting an inline diffuser on the intake side of your filter? The bubbles are then still trying to rise against a descending flow and also will get broken up by your filter media. Downside being you would have to clean it more often.

Unfortunately that would leave gas pockets in your canister filter which in turn will create a noisy filter. Some people have tried putting a In tank co2 diffuser under their outlet in old aquarium forums but that only made a noisy filter. Maybe it’s worth trying it now, now that it is a decade later 🤷‍♂️
