This could possibly be the cheapest shortwave radio!
The Prunus J-116 is a 9-band radio receiver covering AM, FM and 7 shortwave bands and comes complete with a backlit LCD display.
It's a compact little radio that in my opinion, is well worth a look.
If you enjoy these types of reviews then I invite you to visit my channel and explore.
Thanks for watching.

Hi John. thanks for getting in touch & hope it proved useful. It was a little difficult to demonstrate its full shortwave capability due to the limit storage available and to try and manually tune through all 7 bands would have taken forever. However, I have found it to be very good on SW, more than I was able to demonstrate.

Well done, as always. The one thing that would keep me from purchasing this (it's a personal preference) is the push-button tuning. I just prefer a tuning wheel. Still, seems like a nice little budget radio!

Hi, always good to hear from you and thank you for your kind words. TBH, either a thumbwheel or pushbuttons increment in the same frequency steps, (it's not analogue tuning, unfortunately) so as you say it's just down to personal preference. Its performance on the shortwaves was better than I was initially expecting, so it actually turned out to be a decent little receiver for very not much money. Thanks again TWCG.

They also used 10 kHz steps for AM on UK overseas islands in North and South America and the Caribbean. But 9 kHz steps on AM in the UK, located in Europe.

I just subbed to your KZfaq channel!! I really like 👍 all these little radios 📻. I usually like 👍 analog, but I gained more sentimentality with digital radios 📻. I don’t know 🤷‍♀️ about Prunus’s reputation, but I’m sure it’s a pretty 😍 good 😊 little radio 📻. Your friend, Jeff.

Hi Jeff, thanks for your feedback and for subscribing to my channel, you have made my day! New true analogue radios seem to be quite a rare beast these days, the majority being the DSP variety. However, they are good fun and if you shop around, there are some bargains to be had out there. Prunus have their own website (www.prunustech.com/) and is worth a look to see what is available. Thanks again TWCG

10 kHz version for AM (520 - 1710 kHz), they got 87 - 108 MHz for FM but if FM has Japanese bands (76 - 108 MHz), the AM is 9 kHz steps (522 - 1620 kHz).

Wow, I am surprised you picked up so many stations on the shortwave or High Frequency bands from 3 to 21 mhz. You are in the UK and I am in the States but my expensive amature transceivers with a resonate antenna can't pull in the stations like the radio with just a whip antenna managed to do. I am not sure if location was the cause or not but darn that was impressive especially considering one station seemed to originate from Alanta Georgia.

Hi, many thanks for your feedback and greetings from the UK. I live smack in the middle of the England, so it did well on its little 400mm aerial. It only stored the stations it picked up from around 9 to 11Mhz, (including a few very fringy ones) as it ran out of memory to store any more stations from outside those frequencies, (3 to just under 22Mhz). If you can find one at the low price point I mention in the video, the I would recommend purchasing as they are fun just to play around with 🙂

@@TheWobblyCameraGuy I will look for one. It would be nice to have a shortwave radio with good selectivity & sensitivity that you don't have to treat like its a 1937 Martin D28 once owned by Hank Wiiliams Sr. I became interested in shortwave bands again after the Russian Invassion of Ukraine as a means to get news out of western European countries that otherwise might not be available esspecially since KZfaq is very skitish regarding what is revealed. I find the Google translator that is a pre-installed App on my Samsung smart phone does a fairly good job of turning the foreign languages I pick up into my natiive American English and to know what to set the secondary language to in the App I just type the question "who is on 'frequency' now". Should that fail there is always the free shortwave schedule app that does a bang up job of letting you know too. Thanks for the info regarding the rsdio and good luck with your ongoing video production experiment. Mike B..

Hi, many thanks for getting in touch and your feedback. There are some little gems hidden in the many compact budget receivers that are out there. This I think is one of them and is a real bargain for the money. My other ‘go to’ good performing receiver is the Kchibo KK-9803. It has an analogue dial but as one KZfaqr commented ‘it’s a little beast’ and really pulls the stations in. Thanks for highlighting the other compatibles, XH data seems to be a popular receiver judging by the positive reviews given on KZfaq.

Sometimes these stations are aimed directly towards Europe. This is why they are sometimes harder to receive in other regions. WLC for example is aiming towards Europe and can still only be heard in south Africa if you are lucky and the receiving conditions are excellent.

Hi, I suspect that this is 'badge engineered' by several different manufactures as do most of these little sets from AliExpress. I agree with you about the sound. Whilst it doesn't have the advantage of a passive radiator that some other similar sized sets have, it's absolutely fine for every day listening.

@@TheWobblyCameraGuy So let me get this straight, you use the slider to jump the meter bands and the up and down tuning buttons to tune around. Does that mean a single press of the tuning buttons will tune +5kHz or -5kHz up or down, and when holding the buttons will search to the next strongest station?
@TheWobblyCameraGuy
@TheWobblyCameraGuy Жыл бұрын
@@radioweebdx7680 Hi, you are spot on with your assessment. On shortwave you can tune manually in 5Khz steps or as you correctly said, you hold the manual up or down buttons for slightly longer and they will find the next available station 👍

Hi, thanks for the feedback. Well Wobbly, it isn't a real shortwave radio unless it is SSB capable. Many shortwave stations are now using USB or LSB transmissions because it is cheaper and uses less bandwidth. So, future receivers MUST be SSB capable or they are useless.

Rubbish, I prefer an SSB radio too, but you normally don't get SSB in budget radios. If you do, they can't sync or don't do it well. SW is broadcast radio, SSB is amateur radio. Usually a totally different audience to target, especially in a radio so cheap. 73
