I had a guy tell me "do better" when he saw me living in my van. I said: "by do better, u mean be some 400k in debt like u are? My van is paid off, I have no rent, property tax, utilities, car payments. Can u walk away from your job today? Cuz I can. Who's doing better?"

Don't ever let anyone shame you. Do what you know is best for you.

Some of these comments just destroy my faith in humanity. Tory you'll be back on top once the build is done, trust me!

I live in my van, not built out. I love it being raw with a hammock, folding furniture, and a camping kitchen. All my clothes, tools, and toys. Lots of options. Great video. My van is in Virginia, but I’m in Greece. When my plane lands, I’ll be home. No taxi ride, just walk home. Wow, what a thumbnail!

Hello Tory I'm a carpenter and five years ago I stripped out my camper to remodel it. Then I was in a road rage car accident and the guy king hit me and now I'm recovering from a brain injury .I live full time in my camper here in NZ and love life. I don't say, "I live in a van." I say, "I'm traveling the country in my camper van." People love it! Of course, I'm also in my 50's so maybe that gives a different impression. 🤷🏼‍♀

We're all "homeless" in a way. Centuries ago, someone could just find a piece of land, build a house on it, and stay there forever. Now, if you can't pay your rent, you're evicted. If something happens and you can't pay your property taxes, the city could seize your house and sell it. We're all struggling to survive. Your lifestyle might be less precarious than a lot of people living in houses or apartments who are surviving month to month. I've felt homeless in my house that I own. I inherited it from my dad 2 years ago and I tried real hard to make it my own, but.. it's just not it. It's good that you're reflecting on what you want and try to figure it out.

I lived in my split-window VW Bus over 53 years ago and never felt homeless. I loved it! Today. I have a nice 4 BR near the beach and I love it. Be grateful for all things in your life wherever you are. Peace!

I found your channel looking for YT videos about small scale camper and van builds, but from a very different perspective. I'm a licensed amateur radio operator and I'm an old guy researching different ways to do remote communications. I have no want or desire to live in the thing if i build it. It's just an extension of my hobby. However, I find your channel and your story fascinating. So many YT personalities present a two dimensional view of whatever genre or niche or schtick they've built for their little corner of the internet. Sometimes they're entertaining. Sometimes not. You don't come across the same. You remind me of my own kids in that the world you have to navigate is far removed from the one i did at your age just thirty years ago. IMHO, you've adapted to the world as you've found it. You're clearly articulate and intelligent. You seem to have kindness and compassion and you work to build yourself and your life into something positive. When you look at your life and momentarily question your situation and your choices, don't get too distressed. Those are very common thoughts that most of us have from time to time regardless our living situation or income or relationships. It's all very human. If i had a piece of advice, i would offer you this: try not to make comparative statements in your life. Your life is what you choose and what you work for. It is not my life or your friends lives and it's not the life of the homeless people you've occasionally observed similarities in. They're different things, your life from all of ours, and the only comparison you need to make is, "Am I content or do i need to do something different?" That's a constant evaluation we each have to make for ourselves and the opinions of others, however well meaning, are just that; opinions. Mine included. The difference between living a "nomadic life" and being truely "homeless" is hope or the lack there of. If your situation was forced and terrible and you lived in a tent or a tarp instead of a pretty nice van and had no job, no food and no resources to clean your clothes or your body, brush your hair and teeth on a regular basis, you still aren't necessarily homeless so long as you have hope. With hope, any obstacle is surmountable and any situation can be changed. When you lose hope, then things are different. I don't see that being your situation at all. You have a home. You're on an adventure. You're growing and learning and sometimes struggling, but the only thing that gains experience are experiences, so you're far more aware of how things are instead of isolated from the realities of this world you are choosing to navigate in a wholly novel manner. You're doing just fine. I wish you all kindness and hope as you continue your journey in life. Glad I found the channel.

It is a sign of strength and intelligence when you know you need help and aren't afraid to ask for it. Going back home to regroup and get you "stuff" together is a smart move. You need to be able to be comfortable when you are doing your build. And being in the desert heat is not the way to try and do work. You need to just relax and know that you got this and you will turn this van into an even better one than you red one was. This one will mean so much more to you, that you built it yourself and your blood, sweat, and tears were what made this one so great. So just keep on being the badass that you are and find the strength wherever you can to keep on building your dream.

Tory, don't let other people make you quit van life, you are obviousely not homeless...you are doing a build by choice....don't quit!

Libraries are for everyone, not just homeless. When I had no AC while I was living in sticks and bricks, we'd regularly flee for the library, the mall, or anywhere else with AC during heat waves. The worst was probably when my poor aquarium got so hot I had to put ice in it to keep my fish from dying. It was getting up close to 90F. But the difference between us and 'homeless' folks is the fact that we choose this lifestyle, they didn't (generally). And yes. That's van life. I lived for 2 years in a low top econoline sleeping on a mattress sitting on 3 storage bins, and a wardrobe trunk for clothes, dishes, and odds and ends.

Girl, you’re killing me. I’ve been watching your channel for a few months now, but this video really speaks to me. I got into vanlife 2 years ago by choice. I actually owned a house in Georgia, but moved to Nashville, TN. I rented my house and moved into a ProMaster. My van is still not complete yet. I have had some of the exact feelings that you have had. I did get hurt and had to have a surgery that comes with six months of rehab. That hurt my build time. Now I have to have the surgery redone, with another six months of rehab. Nothing major, just a bad knee replacement done by the VA. Funny you mention Martin Guitars. I own a Martin, and here in Nashville, I am in a Luthier school learning to make guitars. Anyway, a long comment and don’t even know if you’ll read it. I just left Las Vegas too. The heat was too much for me, even with AC. Hanging out in Flagstaff now and it's amazing up here. High 70s and low 80s during the day. 50's at night. And no more overheating phones! :)

I'm living in my Promaster while building it out, and you are not kidding about the difficulties. I tried to start and finish my floor in 4 days and I got about halfway. But, it’s a step up from where I was before. Did almost 3 years in a Ford Escape. I had to take control of my narrative with friends and family. Staying positive and not talking about the downside can be very isolating.

Life is about experiences and that’s exactly what you are filling your life with. I’d look at the “embarrassment factor” (I put that in quotes because I think you see it as more of an annoyance) as the impetus to get a build schedule on paper and get to it. Yea I'm building out my Ford Transit right now. It's A LOT of work. And I am a carpenter. My dad does plumbing and electrical. And we have a garage/workshop. Still, been working on it nonstop for weeks. I feel for u Tory

@Tory Delury. Your videos are great, and you've shown what it's like to do Van life. You're very up front about what you want to do during your videos. I think letting people know that van life is what you make of it. So your van isn't completely built, but getting all of the van built does take time, and like you said, you need to get your back door fixed, but the dealership wanted you to leave it for 24 hours and that's your home. But the dealership was wrong, and you had appointments they should have taken the van back and started to work on it. That's why you're making the appointment so they can fix the issue, not we'll get to it tomorrow. These people who are doing van life aren't homeless they just want to travel and live in the van and have fun exploring different places and life styles. You keep up what you're doing and be safe and take care. You remind me of my daughter, and now my son in law taking a very long road trip across the United States just living in the Honda Element and enjoying the places they saw and the people they meet. There are many Vanlife You-tubers, but I love your channel the most. Your channel is the closest to the reality and you're pure. No standard scenery's with the backdoors opened to the sea etc. I'm also a Vanlifer and recognize a lot of what you're experiencing and that reflects also my life. Like one about social anxiety. It amazes me how viewers think that they can change but you cannot. Live your truth, Tory. You'll get there. For the record, 'Ame in a van' has often felt this way (she's also a young single women but is in the south of France) and I also follow a lesbian couple on KZfaq who felt exactly the same way so bought a house in Ireland. You're not taking away resources. There may be a ven diagram somewhere in this but you are two different groups for different reasons. EDIT: If you find someone who wants to date you and help with the van or sees the part-baked, all-loved van as part if the adventure then they're a keeper. Anyway, I'm a brand new subscribers and I'm keen to join in on this journey with you (albeit from a transatlantic distance) so live your life and be happy xx

You had compound stoppers to your build in the vegas area...travel to town and back..the heat...shaded work area...and it really stinks when you have to empty all of your belongings out of the van to be able to work on it. I did that with a packed cargo trailer for a short time and decided that's sucked too much to continue. Being able to have an open work area is huge and a productive environment in a build of any kind. I'm thinkin you worry too much about what other people think of what you are doing! If this makes you happy...why care about any of what others think. Nothing to be embarrassed about. The native American Indian tribes and the Eskimo tribes and early American settlers took their homes everywhere they went and were forced to hunt or followed herds for food to survive. You are blessed in having the passion and vision to create the life you want in more modern times that doesn't have the hardships others before you in time have had to endure because of lack of options. *Houseless not homeless. A loft bed build is real easy in a ProMaster. I have a thick full-sized bed in a LOW roof 2018 1500 with plenty of room and storage below the loft. I just can't sit up completely in bed lol.

Trucker in the same boat here. I tend to run up north in the summer and then work my way south in the fall and winter. Doesn't always work out like that but its generally the ideal way i would choose to run

Your channel is one of my favorites: Van build-out how-to, tours of cool locations, stealth camping tips, van-life advice/philosophy. I've been building out a 2021 Promaster 2500 since March to be as stealthy as possible. When I was selling my house and traveling between cities, my build was going really slow. Now that I am in one location and dedicated to my build, its progressing much faster.

there are billionaires who wouldnt own homes if they didnt have a family. its an over priced money pit for most single people. houses are for families. they're not just for flipping and renovating and making money $. sure thats all cool and stuff but ultimately, we dont all need a big house realistically youve created a home on wheels. i see a home. just because it doesnt stay in the same place doesnt mean its not a home. some people are just too silly (stupid) to understand. dont worry about them

Girl, you're so dame right. Having family's or friends that can have your back is important. and that feeling of doubt and more is something that most people don't talk about. And the complications of maintenance, convenience & safety of living in it is not easy, but at the same time there are those moments that makes you say thank God I did this and like you said no need to label what you're going through . So yeah at the end of the day it's an experience of a life time ( and taking your home where ever you go is a feeling like no other for me). I lived in an suv for a few months. It had no frills, no bells or whistles, no solar panels, jackery, nada. It was just an suv, I slept in the front seat with a lot of blankets. My 3 cats hung out with me, they had a litter box that got changed 4 times a day, so no odors, and I made every space usable, used my cooler for my fridge, etc. I didn't feel homeless until people started to look at me funny. I kind of felt like a rogue. I didn't have a choice to live elsewhere. I spent my days in the library looking for jobs online, went back to my truckstop, and it worked while I needed it. I would do it again if I had to though now with a few more bells and whistles. People like to judge others, I ignore it.

Geezuss, you really are beautiful, your hair is amazing! And you're not homeless, you're houseless. You have a home to go back to. And you really need to start building the van into a home.

Tory, I was thinking about you the other day and your lifestyle. I suffer from chemical reactivity and I was thinking about all the items you have in that van and how everything off-gasses in heavy heat. For me, the chemicals really mess with my emotions, energy and cognitive ability. I get so much motivation from you, so I am constantly looking for a van to start a simple conversion. I so appreciate your transparency and your wisdom. Just wanted to share my experience with toxins and how it destroyed my life. I'm 48 and selling everything I own, my house and property. Sick of working myself to death! I will be a van lifer soon. Thank you for your perspective. Thankfully I don't care what others think. The dating aspect is interesting, I've been single for 6 years so I'm used to be alone. Thank you for sharing your story with us. I started van life in Vegas in March where temperature dropped to 30 degrees at night and stayed until June where temperatures climbed to over 110 degrees. I gave up and migrated to California where I can still work and live more comfortably and the culture is much more accepting. It’s accepting in Vegas too but even more in Cali. I’m from the east coast originally where I agree we don’t have a good understanding of the choice in lifestyle. I’m a GenX that grew up as a 4Her which adds to my unique perspective to the Vanlife culture. The classism that you referred too and counter-culture nature of the life has us living in a parallel world…a different timeline if you will. You will be forced to find yourself and a connection to others in this lifestyle in a way that is unforgiving and risky. For ppl representing marginalized groups, like myself, living in survival mode is what we do best. Being vulnerable, unsupported, and determined will take you a lot farther than being pampered, supported and mediocre. Stay blessed ❤

I never cease to find you so relatable. Thanks for addressing this. Interesting enough, you can also feel "trapped" within a fixed home -- I've lived in my cheap studio apartment for 10 years as of this last May. Because I've been here so long, if I gave up my apartment today, I wouldn't be able to move back again. Rents have more than doubled in the time I've lived here -- I'm fortunate to have "affordable" housing in a *blistering hot* rental market. Move out? Sure, just as long as you know you can't afford to return. Many older people and retirees will find themselves in a similar situation, and many could end up homeless. A tragic fire could put others out of the only homes they can afford as well -- it happens all the time here. I'm reasonably well off, but if I had to pay today's rents I'd be on the streets before long. I'm all but ready to slow-travel the world, yet uneasy about not being able to come back. I'll start with a few long-ish trips to get comfortable before I pull the trigger on full-time. Still, it provokes much anxiety. Sorry dating has been disappointing for you -- I'd date you in a heartbeat and ask you to run away and travel the world with me. I am *literally* twice your age, though, so, yeah....that's not probably ideal, Lol. Cheers!...from North Vancouver

I’ve been living in my minivan in Phoenix for 2 yrs. I can totally relate to mornings being way too hot and having to find somewhere to be during the day. I ended up renting a band rehearsal space that has 24 hr access but you aren’t allowed to live here. I’m fortunate enough that my job lets me park and plug in at their spot overnight. Thank you for having this conversation because every now and then the am I homeless question comes up. Love the life but some days it is a little close haha

We sold our home and photography studio and started Van Life 2 yrs ago. Our friends who are also on the road, like to say we are "Home Free". It feels better than "homeless". Our van is our home and treat it as such. We've owned several homes over the years and now have transitioned into our van. We will probably fine another "home" eventually, but at this moment, we love traveling and will make a decision another day. We are currently sidetracked as our van needs a new transmission, so we are lucky enough to have friends all over the country and they are very welcoming and let us stay with them in times like this. We are very fortunate to have these people in our lives. I hope you can create your national friends and family connections like we have just in case of times of need. Also, the side benefit is we get to really reconnect and bond with them and their children. This has meant a lot to us over these last couple of years. I can't wait to see your final build out! You’re ahead of the game. I’m working up to retiring into van life and the freedom it allows. Good for you for taking the leap. As to the dealer telling you they need to keep it overnight, I call BS. Unless they’re going something major most work can be completed within a few hours. A couple of summers ago during a van trip the oil change warning light came on and the week before I had received an email notification of a factory recall. I called a couple of dealerships within an hour of the route I was traveling and found one that could take me in the same day. Dumb luck, on the way to the dealer a rock got kicked up and chipped my windshield. When I got to the dealer they took the van in and said it would be a couple of hours. When I mentioned the chip in the windshield they said they could take care of it. So it basically took two hours in their waiting area to get three services completed. The recall was no charge, and the oil change and windshield repair cost was competitive with non-dealer shops. Call around and be patient in case the town you’re visiting doesn’t work out.

You do feel that way, I think once you get your van the way you want, it’ll make it much more hospitable for you to stay in regardless the heat from the sun or whatever else. It’s 👉🏻definitely👈🏻 a good experience. It’s just how you’re living in your van now. I’m saving up to have my van built for me. The reason I do it, is because I travel for work, I was paying $2500 a month for my apartment, but I was gone for 6 months out of the year so it doesn’t make sense to pay that when I’m not even there. Right now it’s kind of challenging but once my vehicle is finished, I know I’ll be happier.

I started watching and following vanlife channels because I've been wanting to go on solo road tripping and car(van) camping and get ideas, etc... I've since learned a lot about those who do it for leisure, and those who do it out of necessity. I never understood why people go out of their way to treat others badly or disrespectfully, for no reason.

The biggest thing I have noticed by doing van life full time is how negative our minds are. We are all on a self journey to learn, grow and explore. But the voice in our head that makes us think are you doing the right thing is so hard to control. When you are out of your comfort zone it makes that voice louder. All we can do is just exist day to today. Van life to me is freedom and if you are free then nothing else matters. Good luck and wonderful travels!

Hi Tory. I appreciate your honesty. Also glad you moved away from the excessive heat. I think that location was bringing you down (just my opinion). If you know what your van build will look like when completed couldn't you build your elevated bed box/garage and stash a bunch of your stuff in the garage part to help you feel tidier and more organized and like you're moving forward in your build. The trials and tribulations of life never go away, it just changes as times pass. You're smart, you're beautiful you'll figure this out. Keep moving forward and you'll be fine. I’m a van lifer now and also an army reservist. I just spent 2 weeks without my van in the woods in a one man tent jus T now in in June for training and yea it’s a whole different ballgame without a van. Very insightful video.

I can say I had the same experience with doing van life and having a full time job where people are questioning my life's decision to do this lifestyle or the rumors of living at the office and had a coworker (my lead) tell the managers that I'm doing vanlife and am happy doing it. I love this lifestyle, on the eastcoast right now but would love to venture to the westcoast someday.

Thank you for your honesty that is beautiful. I don't see you as homeless at all when I watch your videos. I used to watch a van life girl in Europe. It didn't last more than a couple years during the pandemic. She had all the problems you just spoke about. She tried to build a cozy van,but she didn't have the skills to make it something that compared to the professionally made ones. She gradually stopped making videos and found a different passion in life. I will link her youtube page if you want it. Just leave a reply to me indicating you want it.

Home is where your heart is, I live out of the back of my truck which isn't the easiest. I will upgrade to a van soon, but I love take weekend trip somewhere beautiful with no worry of where I'll sleep. I love the videos and I'm looking forward to watching the rest of the build. Stop worrying about what others think, it's not healthy. P.S. I'd totally date you. I think you're amazing and I got a thing for nerds.

BOTH, and you are living very close to absolute freedom. Homeless street people are the most free, but obviously a price is paid.
