Our listener asks, "Scriptures say that we are saved by “Faith,” (Rom. 3:28), by “Grace” (Ephesians 2:8) and by “Baptism” ( 1 Peter 3:21) . . . how does all of that work together?" - biblelineministries.org/q-049/

Makes sense in the context of other verses making it clear that salvation is by faith alone in the Savior. This is the best response I’ve heard to this question.

Salvation in Christ starts when one hears the gospel of Christ. A brief summary of this gospel is that it consists of things we must believe, commands that we must obey to be saved, and promises of God that we will receive after salvation. This gospel of Christ tells us about what Jesus did for all humans on the cross as our Lord, God, and Savior. Once a person hears and believes in what Jesus has offered by way of salvation, they must realize their sin, repent of their sins, confess Him as Lord, get water baptized for the forgiveness of their sins, and live obediently to His commands. Here are a few verses that summarize the gospel of Christ. • The gospel must be preached for it is the power of God unto salvation (Mark 16 15; Romans 1 16). • Saving Faith is the direct result of instruction in God's word (John 6 44 and 45; Romans 10 17). • Saving Faith leads to repentance (Acts 2:36-38). • Repentance leads to salvation (2 Corinthians 7:9-10). • When one has repented, turned and confessed his faith in Jesus (Acts 8:37, Romans 10 10), he is then water baptized into Christ (Romans 6:1-6). • This makes one a child of God (Galatians 3:26-27). • 1 John 2:3-4 obey is commandments if you actually KNOW Him.

Many make reference to 1 Peter 3:21 but ignore verse 18, which refers to the Holy Spirit. Old Covenant Baptism vs. New Covenant Baptism (water vs. Spirit) Water baptism was a part of the Old Covenant system of ritual washing. The Old Covenant priests had to wash before beginning their service in the temple. (Ex. 30:17-30) When Christ was water baptized by His cousin John in the Jordan River, He was under the Old Covenant system. He also only ate certain foods, and wore certain clothes, as prescribed by the 613 Old Covenant laws. Christ was water baptized by John and then the Holy Spirit came from heaven. The order is reversed in the New Covenant. A person receives the Holy Spirit upon conversion, and then believers often declare their conversion to their friends and family through a water baptism ceremony. Which baptism makes you a member of Christ’s Church? The New Covenant conversion process is described below. (Born-again) Eph 1:12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. Eph 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, (A person must “hear” the Gospel, and “believe” the Gospel, and will then be “sealed” with the Holy Spirit.) Joh 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. (See Jer. 31:34 for the New Covenant promise, and 1 John 2:27 for the fulfillment) ============ Which baptism is a part of the salvation process, based on what the Bible says? What did Peter say below? Acts 11:15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning. Acts 11:16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. Based on Luke 3:16, and John 1:33, and Acts 11:15-16, the most important thing about the word "baptize" in the New Testament has nothing to do with water. The Holy Spirit is the master teacher promised to New Covenant believers in Jeremiah 31:34, and John 14:26, and is found fulfilled in Ephesians 1:13, and 1 John 2:27. Unfortunately, many modern Christians see water when they read the word "baptize" in the text. Based on the above, what is the one baptism of our faith found in the passage below? How many times is the word "Spirit" found in the passage, and how many times is the word "water" found in the passage? Eph 4:1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, Eph 4:2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Eph 4:3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Eph 4:4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; Eph 4:5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, (See 1 Cor. 12:13) “baptize” KJV Mat_3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: Mar_1:8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost. Mar 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. (Water or Holy Spirit?, See Eph. 1-13.) Luk_3:16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire: Joh_1:26 John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; Joh_1:33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. 1Co_1:17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. 1Co 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. (See Eph. 4:1-5) Heb 9:10 Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation. (Old Covenant ----> New Covenant) How many people have been saved by the Old Covenant water baptism of John the Baptist? Who did John the Baptist say is the greatest Baptist that ever lived in Luke 3:16? What kind of New Covenant baptism comes from Christ? Hebrews 9:10 Old Covenant vs. New Covenant (ESV) but deal only with food and drink and various washings, regulations for the body imposed until the time of reformation. (Geneva) Which only stood in meates and drinkes, and diuers washings, and carnal rites, which were inioyned, vntill the time of reformation. (GW) These gifts and sacrifices were meant to be food, drink, and items used in various purification ceremonies. These ceremonies were required for the body until God would establish a new way of doing things. (KJV) Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation. (KJV+) Which stood onlyG3440 inG1909 meatsG1033 andG2532 drinks,G4188 andG2532 diversG1313 washings,G909 andG2532 carnalG4561 ordinances,G1345 imposedG1945 on them untilG3360 the timeG2540 of reformation.G1357 (NKJV) concerned only with foods and drinks, various washings, and fleshly ordinances imposed until the time of reformation. (NLT) For that old system deals only with food and drink and various cleansing ceremonies-physical regulations that were in effect only until a better system could be established. (YLT) only in victuals, and drinks, and different baptisms, and fleshly ordinances-till the time of reformation imposed upon them . ============================================================================================================= What the modern Church needs is a New Covenant Revival (Heb. 9:10) in which members of various denominations are willing to re-examine everything they believe and see if it agrees with the Bible, instead of the traditions of men. We need to be like the Bereans. It will be a battle between our flesh and the Holy Spirit. It will not be easy. Nobody can completely understand the Bible unless they understand the relationship between the Old Covenant given to Moses at Mount Sinai and the New Covenant fulfilled in blood at Calvary. What brings all local churches together into one Body under the blood of Christ? The answer is found below. New Covenant Whole Gospel: Let us now share the Old Testament Gospel found below with the whole world. On the road to Emmaus He said the Old Testament is about Him. He is the very Word of God in John 1:1, 14. Awaken Church to this truth. Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Jer 31:32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by husband unto them, saith the LORD: Jer 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. Jer 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. Is the most important genealogy in the Bible found in Matthew 1:1 (Gal. 3:16)? Is God's Son the ultimate fulfillment of Israel (John 1:49)? Why has the modern Church done a pitiful job of sharing the Gospel with modern Orthodox Jews? Why would someone tell them they are God's chosen people and then fail to share the Gospel with them? Who is the seed of the woman promised in Genesis 3:15? What did Paul say about Genesis 12:3 in Galatians 3:8? Who is the "son" in Psalm 2? Who is the "suffering servant" of Isaiah 53? Who would fulfill the New Covenant promised in Jeremiah 31:31-34? Who would fulfill the timeline of Daniel chapter 9 before the second temple was destroyed? Why have we not heard this simple Old Testament Gospel preached on Christian television in the United States on a regular basis? Once a person comes to understand the New Covenant promised to Israel and Judah in Jeremiah 31:31-34, which is found fulfilled by Christ during the first century in Hebrews 8:6-13, and Hebrews 10:16-18, and specifically applied to the Church in 2 Corinthians 3:6-8, and Hebrews 12:22-24, man-made Bible doctrines fall apart. Let us now learn to preach the whole Gospel until He comes back. The King of Israel is risen from the dead! (John 1:49, Acts 2:36) We are not come to Mount Sinai in Hebrews 12:18. We are come instead to the New Covenant church of Mount Zion and the blood in Hebrews 12:22-24. Watch the KZfaq videos “The New Covenant” by David Wilkerson, or Bob George, and David H.J. Gay.

So this is what happens when you read into the text your preconceived ideas. For This must mean your interpretation of 1pe3:20 is the souls were saved from ‘being identified with the world and into identity with God’ and NOT literally saved from death and judgement. For Your assertion is that Baptism is just a way of telling the world your identity. Broadcast function alone. Not actually transferring identity (done in faith) but communication. In telling the world, this also gives the baptized a good conscience toward God because he’s professing Christ. Therefore I wonder if Noah and his family felt the same ☺️ I think they might be offended if you say to them, wow praise God, he saved you…primarily from God and everyone thinking you were with them and now they know you’re with God. Thank God you communicated that, God must be pleased. Noah’s response: yeah that was really weighing on my conscience, I’m so glad God used the flood to drown every living thing to proclaim that I’m his. that really saved me! 😄 It is objective that God definitely saved them from death. It was an actual And literal saving, not *just* communicating or a sign they were saved. Anyone thinking 8 souls were ‘saved’ through water knows their lives were literally saved and that’s what it means. This is one of the worst takes I have heard. 🫤

Many believe that water baptism saves, but water baptism is like being circumcised in the flesh it is a physical sign of obedience, the scripture is clear we are to be circumcised in the heart. We are baptized in the holy Spirit of God when he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost. I believe it is at this time he washed us from our sins in his own blood Revelation 1:5. Ephesians 1:13 In whom you also trusted, after that you heard the word of the truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that you believed, you were sealed by that holy Spirit of promise. Ephesians 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.

Good question! First, I’m sorry this is happening to you. The first thing is to pray for your family (Phil. 4:6-7). Bring your request to the Lord. He understands. His own people rejected him. Remember that God is with you every step of the way by His Spirit. I would also encourage you to be steadfast, and don’t give up (1 Cor. 15:58). Water baptism is the new covenants' antitype of the old covenants' type of the cleansing of the temple with blood and water. The author of Hebrews stated, though, that under the old covenant that the blood of bulls and goats was ineffective in dealing with " consciousness of sins"( Heb.10:2) which is guilt. Thus, the purification rites had to be repeated each year because the blood of animals only covered the peoples' sin guilt, but didn't remove it. Under the new covenant, because of the Lords' sacrifice at Calvary, the Holy Spirit, during water baptism, circumcises our conscience, removing the guilt from past sins, and restoring it to its' original childlike freedom from sins' guilt. This makes what transpires during water baptism the " washing of regeneration" of Titus 3:5. The word " regeneration" in the original Greek means to return something to its' original state. The original state of our conscience is as a childs' free frim sin guilt. Now ,the Holy Spirit can enter the " temple" of our body and remain. This is " the anointing that abideth",(1John 2:27) and being " born of water" an important part of the new birth.

1 Peter 3:21. In the broader context of scripture this baptism is always connected to salvation, the forgiveness of sins. In baptism, there is made "an appeal to God for a good conscience-through the resurrection of Jesus Christ" (1 Pet. 3:21). That makes it refer to spiritual salvation and ultimately, if faithful, a resurrection to life rather than condemnation (John 5:28-29).

Jesus said that when He was being baptized He did so to fulfill all righteousness. This means that baptism is a work of righteousness and we are simply not saved by works according to Titus chapter 3, Ephesians chapter 2 and Roman's chapter 4. Please take time to thoroughly review these passages.

Amen, well said! What came into my mind regarding this was Matthew 3 and it says this: Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. Matthew 3:13‭-‬15 KJV See how Jesus said that via water baptism Jesus was fulfilling all righteousness? Grace is unmeritef favor. We are saved by faith in Christ Jesus because He fulfilled the law with His perfect works, no sin, and He died for our sins. Romans 3-5 is so clear on this. Water baptism is a work of obedience. Those who say faith in Christ Jesus and water baptism are either confused A LOT in legalism or then have a false gospel. That is what happened in Galatians 5 for those believers. They added a work of the law, namely circumcision, and Paul in love rebuked them for it. We ain' righteous positionally before God by Jesus and our works of the flesh. Only Jesus, our works are never in the equation

Hey there! That’s a great question. Yes, Hebrews 12 talks about all God’s children receiving chastening from the Lord. Chastening can come in all different forms, and we may not necessarily realize it’s from God. I would not look to your chastening or lack thereof as any form of proof of your salvation. The Bible is very clear that if you have believed that Jesus died for your sin then you are saved. You trusted in him (apart from any works of your own), and you are saved! This is your assurance. Notice these scriptures that are very clear: John 5:24, John 3:15-18, Eph 1:12-14, 1 Peter 1:4-5, Hebrews (the book that refers to the chastening!) chapter 10:10-14 - notice Heb says “perfected forever them that are sanctified.” You’re sanctified (set apart in Christ) by believing; therefore you are perfected forever! Do expect chastening, but know that the amount of chastening is not an indicator of your salvation. Your faith alone in Jesus Christ for the payment of your sin is what saved you. - Trent

If water baptism was required, why in the world would Paul say: 1 Corinthians 1:14-17 KJV I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius; Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name. And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other. For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. Paul was sent to preach the Gospel. If water baptism was required for salvation, he would not have said "I thank GOD I baptized none of you." Apostle Paul wanted to see everybody get saved so he made it clear that he wanted people to believe after hearing the word of truth. Ephesians 4:4-6 KJV There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. Born of water is physical birth, born again is spiritual baptism. Baptized into the body of Christ and sealed with the Holy Spirit of Promise the moment one believes. The Thief on the Cross was a perfect example of someone who just believed on our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ trusting who he was and was saved. In Acts, we see the Gentiles simply heard the word of truth being preached by Peter, and believed the Gospel saved right there receiving the Holy Ghost after child-like faith. Here are verses: Acts 10:43-45 KJV To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. And Peter confirmed this with the other apostles in Acts 15 that both Jew and Gentile were saved by grace through faith: Acts 15:7-11 KJV And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe. And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, we shall be saved, even as they. Salvation is by grace through faith alone in the Gospel, the Blood Atonement of Jesus Christ. Verse after verse shows its by faith alone showing the simplicity in Christ Jesus. 2 Peter 3:9 KJV The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 2 Corinthians 11:3 KJV 3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. Galatians 1:6-7 KJV I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.

Where in the Bible does it say that baptism is a picture of what has been done?
@LookinUp_

Baptism was practiced before the founding of the church. The Jews of ancient times would baptize proselytes to signify the converts’ “cleansed” nature. Very simply, baptism is an outward testimony of the inward change in a believer’s life. Christian baptism is an act of obedience to the Lord after salvation; although baptism is closely associated with salvation, it is not a requirement to be saved. The Bible shows in many places that the order of events is 1) a person believes in the Lord Jesus and 2) he is baptized. This sequence is seen in Acts 2:41, “Those who accepted [Peter’s] message were baptized” (see also Acts 16:14-15).

@@LookinUp_ “Baptism is an outward testimony of an inward change…” Sacred Scripture nowhere describes baptism in this way. It does, however, say that baptism saves us, forgives our sins, regenerates us, makes us sons of God, and that without it we cannot enter the Kingdom of God. That baptism forgives sins is also included in the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed. And that the water in John 3:5 is a reference to baptism, is universally attested in the fathers, as well as the fathers unanimous testimony that baptism is salvific.

Rom 6 and Col 2:12 say that baptism "immerses" you into Jesus' resurrection which is the concept Peter is referring to here in 1 Peter 3:21. And to be "resurrected with Christ" is another way of saying "regenerated" or “born again” - and this is caused by baptism. A regenerated person is going to live a righteous life which is attended by a good conscience as Peter mentions here and which will "testify" to God in the final judgement (Rom 2:13-16). Further, baptism washes away past sins (Acts 2:38, 22:16) which also provides for a clean conscience. So, we have complete provision for our conscience - both past sins committed as well as for the future by making the living an obedient life going forward possible through a new birth patterned after God’s righteous character. Paul's emphasis is on how baptism saves a person from the power of sin while Peter here is focused on how baptism "births" a righteous person (Eph 4:24) which God will deliver into His eternal kingdom just like Jesus was admitted to God's presence, after His resurrection, because He was righteous (John 16:10). The Flood literally saved Noah from the sinful world around him just like God's final judgement of this world will save us, for eternity, from sin. This is how the Flood symbolizes baptism.

@jesuschristisyhwh The thief died under a different covenant - it was not possible or him to be "baptized into Christ" (Rom 6:3) because Jesus had not been raised from the dead. Furthermore, God has the prerogative to save people who cannot be baptized such as dying ICU patients. But we should not take the exceptions as a rule to follow. Also keep in mind that baptism is for the removal of the sin nature. A dying person who has repented has done the main thing God has required. Baptism is given to protect you from sin's power to re-take you - Rom 6 says baptism saves from slavery to sin - something that is not going to happen to those who are dying.

@@Eman-vp5wk Yes, but Christ forgave the thief and promised him paradise before He died. Also, the command for baptism under the Great Commission wasn't given yet. That was after His resurrection and before He ascended back into heaven. The thief on the cross is a poor example to rely on!

1 Peter 3:21 is saying baptism that now saves you. How do we get baptized? New covenant by the spirit by fire. Yes, it is a new baptism by fire. Not the old baptism, by water. You got that twisted. You're reading it wrong

Saved from being identified with the world? That doesn't make sense. Galatians 3:26-27-You are all sons of God through faith, because as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Paul certainly didn't contrast faith with baptism. The two go hand in hand in his mind. Colossians 2:11-12; Romans 6:1-6.
