Is water dangerous on the Carnivore Diet? What to drink instead
In this video I discuss the importance of consuming fluids while following a carnivore way of eating. Of course water is an essential part of our well being, but drinking it on its own can potentially be harmful on a zero carb diet. This is because when we start to lower our intake of carbohydrate, we lose our water weight and our body no longer retains sodium - meaning that we'll become dehydrated faster. Drinking an excess of plain water can deplete our minerals and electrolytes, so we need to be careful and consume more hydrating components. Some of the products I mention in this video are: Unrefined Pink Himalayan Salt, Lemon Juice, Beef Stock, Grass-fed Butter, Green Tea and Fruit Tea. It may also be worth looking into supplementing with certain minerals, like Potassium and Magnesium.

i found that when i stopped drinking water with meals everything balanced out. i drink 1 hr after a meal to not dilute my stomach acid so more nutrients are absorbed. at first it was tough waiting a hour because i was so use to drinking while eating, but when i became use to it i feel more hydrated. i usually drink about 20 oz of water when the hour is up, and i'm full, and hydrated for hours. food, and drinks don't even cross my mind.

I live in the desert in central Australia. The heat is overwhelming and before going carnivore would easily drink 4 litres of water daily. Even then my body would feel over heated internally. Since going carnivore I’ve found that I naturally drink much less and at the same time am coping with heat better. I drink snake juice, salty bone broth, and juice from pickles. I have a glass of sparkling mineral water 🚿 n the evening. I’m not a tea or coffee drinker. As for fresh water I’m only drinking maybe 1 liter/day now. Which keeps those precious minerals in my body where I need them.

Laszlos Boros, a deuterium depleted water researcher, advises eating some fat to see if thirst goes away. Only if the thirst persists does he sip at water. I'm not sure he is on a carnivore diet, but at least some kind of high-fat animal-based diet.

So true my thirst dramatically changed, i am not thirsty except around bedtime and it’s a natural instinct of the body because the body knows it’s going to be 7 hours without water… so it ignites a slight thirst sensation. I drink a bit of dark cocoa powder with lukewarm water and sometimes a little bit of fat cream, but often without cream; also herbal tea, but total fluids for me it’s 700 mL per day, i don’t need more and don’t feel dehydrated. I don’t drink black green white tea and i don’t drink milk (too heavy to digest!) and no coffee. The body knows exactly what it needs, pay close attention to its signals and follow along. Btw, i am more thirsty in winter because my apartment becomes very dry and i spend a lot of time indoors - my body automatically craves mineral supplements; i don’t even need to think about it because my subconscious mind takes me to the exact shelf in the store and i just pick the supplements. The body is an intelligent organism, it’s actually quite amazing! ❤️

Hi, ive had all the same issues as you and corrected them. You have made a good start with what you are saying but missing some key points. Water 'doesnt' hydrate you it dehydrates you. This is the cause of all your symptoms. People are dehydrated with water. This dehydration causes every physical and mental symptom you can think of. It can't hydrate cells as it doesn't trigger insulin to be carried into the cells. For every gram of carbohydrate you store it will store 3 - 4 grams of water. On carnivore with no carbs without this storage you will feel dehydration at full force. This is also known as the keto flu. People doing 80 10 10 and carnivore can become symptom free as they are massively removing salt intake which means less thirst. The reason some people say you need salt is because they are always drinking liquids. Carnivore should be done with absolutely minimum water otherwise you will just feel worse and worse. However, it isnt necessary to do a carnivore diet to heal all you need to do is lower salt, refined sugars , alcohol and caffeine and so you will need to drink less and less. Even too many vegetables can cause issues with too much water (The Petersons have learnt this) Our bodies will extract the water it needs naturally from our foods, it just isn't necessary to keep drinking liquids. This is why people who drink water are always thirsty. When you are truly thirsty just take a few sips until you are no longer thirsty. Water causes dehydration, dehydration thickens the blood which then means sugar gets trapped in the blood and then say hello to diabetes, arthritis, fibromyalgia etc etc

I've found that these diets, usually low carb, dehydrated the hell out of me, but makes the body more efficient at using food and water. You will find you can gain weight, but barely lose it. You can gain a lot of fat but not much water. But if you drink lots of water again, and go on a normalised diet, you return back to normal. By the way, I've been on vegetarian/vegan as well. They do the opposite. Hydrate you really well but no fat.

I started a much higher fat and moderate protein carnivor diet, I've noticed I'm not as thirsty, and this has been the only thing I've ever done that has solved the constipation problem for me, the fat is immediate fuel for the body and fat does makes you feel full. It also helps with depression because it reduces the stress hormone Cortisol, they call it carnivor fat fasting, check it out, and it may help.

I have been carnivore since the beginning of October. I was very thirsty in the beginning and I had so dry lips. Then I was only using pink himalayan salt. Now I use a salt that has 30% sodium and 70% potassium. I know that it is processed but it has really helped me and I'm not that thirsty anymore. Crohn's Colitis Vitality hey, I bought a counter top stainless steel gravity filter a few months ago. I believe there are far better filters and purifiers but they attach to the tap and I don't have the right kind for it to work with. I use that water for broths, boiling eggs and increasingly less for drinking water. it filters but also is impregnated with silver which naturally kills pathogens. the mineral water is gerolsteiner brand and I buy it in their glass bottles, it lists the mineral count and I appreciate that I avoid flouride, pesticides (i think lol), pharmaceutical toxins, etc. it's a bit expensive though and undeniably enjoyable. I can't get to a fresh stream but I did look into it. thanks for asking!!

I'm not sure if this is allowed on a carnivore diet. But I am just leaving a raw vegan diet, and looking into some of these things. Especially the carnivore diet. I will say a raw vegan diet is quite hydrating (tho I'm leaving it for other reasons.) So I'm not enjoying being less hydrated now. However, even on that diet I still needed a drink every day. And water alone just wouldn't cut it. I would juice fruits and veggies as well, but what became my staple drink...literally nothing would feel hydrating so well as this. Or taste as absolutely fantastic, either. And that is watermelon juice. I always love to make it with a few mint leaves, and a handful of spinach. Juiced in with the watermelon. It does make it an ugly color, but the spinach adds the perfect balance so it's not just a plain sweet juice. I drink a quart of it like my body CRAVES it. And I could drink water all day long, it wouldn't hydrate me like this would. So...like I said, I'm not sure if that's allowed on a carnivore diet. But I am sort of wanting to try the carnivore diet, and I'm not sure I can give up my juices. Besides the fact. I like I can still get some vitamins from them as well. But I tell you...not even coconut water is a match for watermelon juice 😁 Try it, and you'll feel satisfied immediately. P.s. Juices also make your skin glow. I like to call them my natural makeup, from the inside 😄 One juice is enough to set you glowing for the day. Altho. ...a green juice seems to "glow" you the most.

So far the carnivore diet has been good for me, not the panacea that they make it out to be online (I'm generally a healthy man thank God) but I am noticing a reduction in my sweat/heat intolerance which is what made me try the diet in the first place as a process of elimination since no doctor or medical exam found anything wrong with me that might be causing what to me felt like abnormal levels of sweating after very little activity and/or heat. Interestingly *water* and hydration has been the most puzzling aspect of the diet. At first I felt thirsty ALL THE TIME and water only seemed to quench my thirst for like half an hour if at all and I number #1'd way too fast after drinking it. Something wasn't right. Online I found out that this was actually something to keep in mind in this diet and they recommended adding salt but preferably electrolytes to water. In the water purification community it is said that adding Himalayan salt to RO water adds trace minerals back to the water so I already had some (I don't usually put it in because in my country we are used to drinking RO water without it being mineralized) so I tried that and it worked more or less, I still feel relatively thirsty often. Interestingly, once I got electrolytes (hi-lyte) and used them exclusively on the water the unquenchable thirst returned after a day or so and I had to go back to adding Himalayan salt. I felt it in my kidneys that they were working overtime too. Who knows what they're selling as electrolytes these days but they didn't seem to help me. My body lacking water might be why my sweat levels have been reduced too. I feel generally ok besides this, I don't feel low energy levels, I don't feel like I'm missing bowel movements etc. but the hydration aspect of the diet might be the reason why I'll end up dropping it since who knows what long-term effects it might have on me or my kidneys. We definitely need more studies regarding this and since I'm generally healthy I don't _need_ this diet. It's unfortunate, I liked some of the effects I've noticed. I liked not having to number #2 (or f art) often. Also, despite eating only animal products I'm spending like 2/3rds of what I use to spend on food monthly since the diet forces you to avoid most fast food/takeout. Hopefully they figure the hydration aspect in the future because the diet seems right. It's mindblowing to me that animal based food is evidently easier for us to digest than plant-based ones.

This is what I recommend; table salt is bad for you because it has been stripped of it's mineral content, a good himilayan pink salt will have up to 91 minerals and trace minerals. I would make snake juice; 1 litre of water with a tspn of him salt, a tspn of no salt (potassium), and a tspn of magnesium. We do need to keep our electrolytes up on this diet. You can find the recipe online on KZfaq

Like you I have to watch these things very carefully. I was told right at the beginning that i had to drink a lot or my kidneys would eventually become affected because it is so hard to be fully hydrated without a colon. Add the keto or carnivore way of eating into the mix and hydration is really hard. Not sure I've got it right yet but I drink two litres of water a day, as water, mineral water, decaff tea and decaff coffee. In each pint I add 1/2 tsp potassium citrate and 1/8 tsp sodium (celtic sea salt) and I take magnesium tablets three times a day. I do not do well with sodium, it gives me migraines, so I am careful with it. One source recommends 4:1 potassium:sodium ratio as being what we would have evolved with originally. I also take extra multi B vits because they get washed out so easily even though they are high in a carnivore diet. But I only eat meat once a day, I eat eggs for one meal and fish for the third if i am eating three meals a day: on the days when I only eat once or twice it is usually fish and meat, or eggs and meat. Trying not to get sensitised to eggs!! As it is, blood tests show my kidneys not doing well now, after 50 years with no colon: but my GP thinks this may be a false reading because I may just never be fully hydrated when the blood tests are done. Either way, it suggests that I haven't cracked it yet. We lose one litre of water each night just through sweating and respiration, which needs to be replaced early after waking: I am thinking of trying to drink that before breakfast as I do not think it is good to drink a large amount with meals. I'd be interested to learn how you go with this! Thank you so much for raising the subject. Oh yes, one more thing, sorry! When we are fat adapted and have body fat to burn, we do not need so much water because water is a byproduct of fat metabolism: but if we have very little body fat, then of course we will need more water as muscle does not store water as well as fat.
@ChrisGascoigne1
@ChrisGascoigne1 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much as always for your helpful and thoughtful comment Sweffling - in particular bringing up the fat adapted part at the end - that's a really interesting thought! By the sounds of things the foods you're consuming in a day are keeping you going and providing you with good nutrition. I'm a little confused when you said you don't do well and get migraines from the sodium - I was under the impression that not enough sodium causes you to become lightheaded/ nauseous/ have migraines. I definitely tend to do more sodium than potassium personally, but I'm definitely not consuming anywhere near the recommended daily amount. As you said, the having no colon part makes things extremely difficult for anyone else to understand how challenging it is for us to follow this diet. I personally prioritise bringing markers of inflammation down above all else, so I know I've got to stick at this for at least a little longer.
@1sweffling
@1sweffling 5 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisGascoigne1 The sodium puzzles me too I have no idea why I react 'against' prevailing wisdom, but I do. I am a migrainey person: wheat, dairy and sugar all give me migraines. But they are eliminated now and If I have too much sodium, that, and/or lack of magnesium are the only things left that definitely give me migraines. I am not metabolically 'good' at eliminating toxins, perhaps that has something to do with it? Perhap it is because there is a lot of sodium in meat products and some fish, but the potassium is usually to be found in plants and fruit, of which I eat very little. I just don't know, but I do know how precarious the balance can be for us 'no-coloners'!!

There is a settling period to go through with the carnivore diet, just as there is with any significant change to your normal eating pattern, but all is good after 3-4 weeks. I'd recommend getting plenty of potassium and magnesium, and fresh red meat is a good choice for that.
