The song may be overplayed but it's still a fantastic piece of songwriting by Noel, and Liam's vocal is absolutely incredible. It's not an Oasis song I listen to a lot but when I do, I'm still awed by how great it sounds.

The drummer was Tony McCarol and I think it's awesome of you to mention his contribution to Definitely Maybe again. Great video and the lure of your patreon grows stronger, especially after the darts comment.

This song is a straight up classic. It was absolutely everywhere when it came out. You couldn't walk sideways without running into "Wonderwall" playing somewhere. For me though, I am a bigger fan of their first record. I absolutely love "Live Forever" and "Supersonic" (absolute belters). "Definitely Maybe" was released when I was living in the UK and that record and Blur's "Parklife" were the soundtrack of my time there. On the Blur/Oasis feud, I was always team Blur through and through. I, like you, since then have come to appreciate Oasis (the other team) and the Gallaghers solo work so much more. The only hassle is now, is who is the 'nicer Gallagher'? Choose your sides! Or don't.... Excellent video again, Justin, I love it when you cover the old people stuff. Thank you from an old lady....

Found your channel through the Rick Beato interview. Hilarious stuff but at the same really insightful. I'm also a fan of the "guitar plugged into amp turned up" sound of your Les Paul playing. Apropos 90's UK music, I wonder if you'd ever consider talking about one of my favorite bands of that era and ever, Suede. Admittedly their quality took a dive after Bernard Butler's departure, but the first two albums are masterpieces (and aren't done justice by the term I never liked, "brit-pop"). Bernard Butler is arguably the best guitar player that too many guitar players have never heard of. He's had a quirky, very non rock-star career post-Suede. Both band and guitarist are undeservedly obscure, in the US at least. Anyway It would be cool to hear your take. If they're not your cup of tea, that's cool as well. I like that your musical appreciation for bands is not separate from your personal interaction with them as people. Perhaps you ran across Brett Anderson at some point and he was a c*nt? Who knows. Another 90's brit band that I'd love to see getting the golden JHRA touch is Pulp. Isn't Jarvis Cocker just a cool geezer? And he cosplayed as Brian May in one of their videos - there's must be some kinship there!

Hi Justin, a great video thank you, the drummer is not using brushes but wooden things that are called broomsticks in the trade! Brushes usually have a handle and metallic fibres (or nylon) that you actually flick or brush at the snare with.

Hi Justin. Firstly, your regular videos have re-awoken the songwriter in this 50 year old, disillusioned muso, here in the vanquished West of Ireland, where men are men, and sheep are nervous!. So, thank you, good Sir. Secondly, I am a slide player, hugely influenced by Derek Trucks and Landrerh. Slide guitarists seem to be non-existant here in Ireland and I find it baffling, as the technique is arguably easier to learn compared to the standard guitar technique. My question is, have you ever played slide guitar, and what are your thoughts on the style? I'm trying to convince new guitarists to master it, as I believe it's the perfect way to introduce people with limited use of their fingers or wrists ( due to injury or old age), to the joys of guitar playing. I always preferred Definitely Maybe as an album and Rock 'n' Roll Star to what came afterwards. It had a harder edge to it and as a debut album was like a slap across your face or a swift kick in the bollocks. An amazing album.

I got sick of hearing this version of the song, but always love listening to Noel sing it. It was one of the first songs I learned on guitar. I always play it with a d and g held down all the way through. That was also one of the first things I learned about playing guitar: Never lift a finger unless you have to. Now, when I play it, I can never resist making it into a medley of this, D'you Know What I Mean and Writing to Reach You by Travis.

I've seen a video of Noel singing the song on the Howard Stern show in 1997 (I think) and it's so beautiful, there's so much more sensitivity and nuance in his voice.

Live Forever is my favorite Oasis song and one of my favorite songs ever. Love Wonderwall and I love Ryan Adams’ cover too.

I was 7 in 1995, but remember this song being EVERYWHERE! Everyone knew the lyrics and you either couldn’t get enough of it or complained endlessly that it was overplayed whilst tapping your foot along to the beat. Though not a huge Oasis fan, I’ve always liked Wonderwall but would argue that Lyla and Don’t Look Back In Anger are better songs. Maybe it’s because they’re more up-beat and Wanderwall can come across as a bit whiny when I’m in the wrong mood for it. 😅🥰

I love that phrase a “shed builder”..lol..sheds rot and don’t last unless you’re an extension to the house like ringo star.. but people like John bonham are unique like a personality =how he tunes the drums =how hard he hit and how softly he hit=to me he thumped funky beats,bionic drums solos..and just had that gift..I can do shed drumming with just one lesson..but with John bonham I’d describe a drum solo like playing an whole orchestra on the instrument..god i wanna be able to play a drum kit at home..it’s in the blood,my grandad played the drums in a pub..but a drum solo to me is like you have a tune in your head and you play it through the drums..with a guitar solo it’s waiting for the que or nod from who’s on bass or vice versa..then when drumming to a guitar solo type thing it’s like chi energy flowing,the fills spills and bellyache back into the rhythm..with moby dick I think it’s like you are playing a song through the drum kit =very hard to copy +but if you’re a drummer ,it’s easy to do your own drum solo,,=it’s like playing a tune/song in the drums and easy to remember =but the room for improvisation is always there it’s all in how hard you hit the drums every hit is a note..funky beats like in Kashmir are fat as fuck..best drummer ever r.I.p..John

This song takes me back to distinct memories of being in the car with my mom, who loved alternative music. I must have been in second grade. It's beautiful and mystical that music has the power to transport us in time like that. I saw Liam Gallagher in 2018 with my brother and was totally disappointed he did not play Wonderwall. I really wanted to relive those memories as he sang live. Maybe someday...

A lot of people are dismissive of Oasis and yeah some of their hits are "overplayed" but there's a good reason for it and they were brilliant. Had finger on the pulse and wrote some really great, as Noel would put it, "tunes". Proper good band. Great hairs too

Wonderwall was originally called Wishing stone, and it was written for Melissa Lim, the girl that Talk Tonight was written for as well. There are several good videos on youtube talking about that whole period. So that whole thing Noel says about the song being about yourself... bullsh*t bullsh*t is, well, bullsh*t. Noel wrote Wonderwall for Melissa, but by the time it was released he was with someone else so he had to make up some fake story about the song. In any case, great song, great album

He’s actually playing with his pinky on the g on the last string too. That’s the interesting thing about that shape, those two fingers never move. I think that’s what gives the song such an interesting rhythm to the guitar

Also I'd encourage anyone who hasn't heard it and enjoys more experiemental music to check out the "wonderwall music" album by george harrison, its on spotify and it's a super interesting listen , even if it doesn't become something you play all the time, but personally I really enjoy it. I'd especially recommend it if you enjoy the indian classical music george was into, it has tons of that, but also a really unique mix of influences on there from early electronic to country

There is an aspect grounded in everyday human emotions, and I think they've build their songs around that quite well. The lyrics can be abstract, but there is a story that may speak to you. One of Britain's finest bands.

Top tune for me and unique in many ways. Great because of the chord shapes (which hold the pinky on the bottom too!). I've taught this tune to god knows how many people and it 's one of those you keep saying "how come nobody did this before"?. It sounds so 'common' but actually nobody has put those chords together, in that way, ever before Gallagher did. On top of that an absolute stonking vocal and brilliant drumming really makes it. Top top tune. (Oh and btw the production on it with cellos etc is a nice touch too)

What a classic, and so well produced, all the instruments really sing (no pun intended) on this. It's power (in my opinion) was expanded even further when it was covered so well by Ryan Adams. If you haven't heard it, look it up, he makes it his own. Brilliant.

Wasn’t huge fan of Oasis in those days , and probably think more of them now tbh , but liked a few of their songs and especially Wonderwall. Had the opportunity to have a few beers with Liam late 90s - I was a gaffer on a tv shoot doing an interview with him in what was then the Atlantic bar in the west end, and he hung around after we’d wrapped . A friend of the director came down with her daughter to meet him..we were all sitting around on sofas and he sung wonderwall for her , she was about 10 or so I guess , very sweet of him and Pretty fucking cool. Got a bit messy after that though later on in the evening🤪

I recommend checking out their bassist Andy Bell and his solo stuff from recent years (the guy from Ride, not Erasure). It's good.

Back in '96 my English uncle made me a cassette with Morning Glory on one side and a Blur album on the other, which my young mind was blissfully unaware was tantamount to a Crips vs Bloods street war. Passed the tape around, wore it out, got every Oasis album, single, and bootleg I could find on CD, and fast forward a couple decades now have them on vinyl and am up to my ears in Gorillaz. And this album started it all.

With the George Harrison stuff - the solo from Supersonic is also heavily inspired by a George Harrison song.
