Now tell me how to figure out if I'M actually hungry or just tired!

My issue is, I don’t know how much she’s actually getting in one feed, if it’s actually enough because then she actually gives real hunger cues not tired cues. And also, my baby isn’t gaining weight but she’s having plenty of wet and poopy diapers. She’s also showing that she is learning even earlier how to do certain skills, then what’s average, so she checks off all the boxes for babies her age at two months, old, minus the weight gain. It makes me think that she’s not eating enough. People say to let them sleep when they’re sleeping and not to disturb the child, but she’s basically sleeping through the night now, and hardly takes naps during the day. I just don’t know what to do. There’s just so much advice out there and I keep taking all of it in and I just feel like I have no idea what’s happening to her and I’m really worried about her weight. She’s two months old now, and weighs only just over a pound from what she weighed at birth. Her pediatrician may do bloodwork at her two month visit if things do not get better. She does feel a lot lighter in the last week and I started feeding her less on demand and before that I’m pretty sure she was gaining weight pretty quickly. I just don’t know.

I'm so sorry you're having a harder time than average. The only way to truly know how much milk she is transferring is by doing a weighted feed. Weighing her before and then after the feed. Sometimes hospitals have lactation programs where you can go in and weigh them there. I suggest you seek out some help from a lactation consultant for more feeding advice first.

Just food for thought, I had a very similar experience with my son not readily gaining weight in the beginning (poops and pees were fine), and I wish I would have seen a lactation consultant earlier! Latch was good, but weighted feeds showed my son had a transferring issue. The consultant mentioned something called laryngomalacia, which I brought it up to his pediatrician who referred to ENT and he indeed had it! Not saying that is what’s going on with your baby, but sometimes a professional who sees many cases has the insight we need. Also, by going in earlier it would have really helped my milk supply establish better. Just my two cents looking back on our experience. Good luck!

My baby is 1 month old. How long should she be sleeping once she starts to nap? I guess depends on how full she is? Also can she nap close to bedtime? (Ex. Waking up from last nap at 6pm when bedtime is 7pm). Thanks!

The nap length isn't so much about how full she is but more about the timing of your sleep, external distractions and internal distractions such as gas, burping, and hunger. A 1 month old really can only stay awake comfortably for about 1 hour, so yes, they'll have evening naps. A more detailed answer is in our best selling book on Amazon www.amzn.com/B08WQ2J8MZ

Every 3-4 hours applies to babies that eat formula, for breastfed babies they can eat every hour to 2 hours, they might be going thru a growth spurt, so this information isn't so helpful, especially if the only thing that soothes the infant is the breast or pacifier, It could be helpful for older infants, over 6 months old not new born

Is it normal for a 2 month old to wake up 2/3 times in the night for feeding? I’ve seen so many parents online saying their 4 week old baby sleeps through the night it makes me think we’re doing something wrong.
@HelpingBabiesSleep

Hi Angela! When someone posts something like that - ask them what their definition of sleeping through the night is. For some people that means 6 hours. So their 6 month old sleep 6 hours and they say they are sleeping through the night, even though they eat 2 more times and sleep 4 more hours in that range. I think it's very common for a 2 month old to eat 2-3 times over 10 hours at night. The best way to elongate night stretches of sleeps is to work on intentional and full feeding in the daytime. We go over how to do this in our book on Amazon. www.amzn.com/B08WQ2J8MZ

@@HelpingBabiesSleep My friend's baby is 4 months old and she said he sleeps from 7pm to 7am. My little girl spits up a lot, we think she has reflux so feedings are difficult and we have to keep her up 15-20 minutes after feeding so that she doesn't spit all her milk.

@@Angela-yg3bc We don't know if she's eating in those times. Some people say my baby sleeps through the night! 7 to 7 and when you ask more details they eat a few times. Also if she's formula fed that's different that EBF. And it's not common. In addition, 2 months is wayyyy different neurologically than 4 months. Don't compare yourself to her, it's the killer of joy. Focus on yourself and the things and actions that you can control.

My 2 month old does the same, wakes up 2-3times a night within 10 hours, and I think it’s pretty normal. Please don’t worry ❤
